I disagree, I hate what they did with Rhys.
I know right! At the end of the first tales game, regardless if you choose to be a dick or kid, Rhys says he wanna be different. He says he has learned money isn't everything in this world and that he does not wanna be like Handsome Jack. He wanna do something different. Sure he isn't like Handsome Jack (yet atleast) but he for sure is just like Vasquas now. And he legit hasn't done anythinh different form Handsome Jack or any other CEO. He cares so much about money he made the slogan of his company "The Mighty Dollar" and even fires people for having bad ideas that won't sell well? (And also for letting the monkeys loose on a space ship which makes 0 sense lol) It just feels so out of character compared to where the first Tales game ended. And also his character model, espechally i Borderlands 3?!?! It looks like in 6 years he aged 20 years and is 45 instead of 33! And then you look at Moxxi whom from BL1 to BL3 (13 years) looks younger/just as young xD Man aging in these game haha xD
They really butchered his character, plus not having troy baker return to play him is just wrong
Yeah they turned him into discount Vasquez and stripped him from all the friends and aquaintances he made throughout tales. Not even Zer0 stayed in the New Tales
They gave Rhys the Vaughn treatment, completely stripped him of all the depth and growth he had as a character just to turn him into a generic cliché whose entire role in the story was to be a joke. Not only that but he barely featured in the game at all! At least he had an actual character model unlike Fiona, even if it was just recycled from BL3.
@@Bonuur not so fun fact, he was more than willing to return. They just....didn't rehire him. Perhaps because his pay was too big or whatever the case may be. But Troy didn't find out that Rhys was even in the game or that he was recast until BL3 was released. they did my boy so. frickin. dirty.
I still can't get over how borderlands 3s main complaint universally was its story and writing was shithouse, and then the released new tales from the borderlands with even worse writing... If they fucked tales then goddamn I don't have any hope for bl4 writing

@@awesomesource12 3's awful writing/characters actually discourage me from playing more 💀did maybe 3 & a half playthroughs (very first playthrough got showered in 60+ legendaries), in 2 I did probably a couple dozen playthroughs + plenty grinding
@@awesomesource12Borderlands 3 wasn't that great at launch. It suffered the same problem TPS did with bosses and mini bosses that didn't respawn. Although unlike TPS' grinder that was a workaround, 3 pretty much forced you to farm one of 2 story bosses hoping to get one specific drop from a legendary loot pool of 120+
to this day i do not believe that the deleted maya funeral cutscene was actually scrapped and was instead halfway created after the fact to try to appease people who were upset, im not willing to believe they had written and storyboarded a scene like that and decided not to go with it in favor of ava being indignant and blaming lilith for what happened and not properly respecting the lost character

That's what actually happened. The "pre-release" cutscene is based on an early, early script. It is NOT the original script, so basically anything that happened during the cutscene was vaguely based on the original script and everything, including its own script, the storyboard was done post-release. Its why it addresses everything that players complained about (vault hunters not being addressed in cutscenes, vault hunters not being physically present in cutscenes, Ava acknowleging she is somewhat to blame for Maya's death and growing from it, Maya receiving a funeral etc) issues that, even if this cutscene was actually done pre release and had been added to the game-- would had been present on every other cutscene.
Like, when they saw the backlash about Maya's treatment and the hate on Ava the writers just said that players were haters because they hadn't done all of Ava's quests, in plural. When in reality Ava only had a single quest explaining her backstory. The "pre-release" cutscene was done only so the director's cut dlc had content to sell and a way for the developers to go "See? We can do good cutscenes and have good writing if we wanted to" so there isnt anything about that cutscene that was "pre-release" only that it was based on an early idea.

Same thoughts when i first knew about the " deleted scene". I think it was created after the backlash because no sane writer would reject the better funeral version over what they approved in the game. I guess i don't easily believe in everything these companies propagate.
They ruined Rhys in New Tales, they regressed him even more than BL3 did. Why did you think they him right?

@@ItzTermx don’t try to excuse new tales’ retarded writing, they just saw Rhys was the CEO of Atlas in BL3 and decided that meant he was an evil CEO with no character development from the original tales. The original story was about him learning about the monster that someone he once idolised truly was and denouncing him, learning to become a better person in the process. Besides, even if Jack was somehow in Rhys’ body still, he would be HANDSOME JACK, not the most generic asshole businessman ever. The entirety of new tales is garbage and it deserves 0 defence

I am so pissed that they ruined the new Tales. The first one, when I played it years ago, is what got me really into Borderlands and made me want to play all the games. I guess I should've known not to be so optimistic after all these years. The older you get, the more things you love get destroyed, like Star Wars, LOTR, etc...

There were signs as early as the Commander Lilith DLC that Gearbox was moving in a bad direction.
Its called Greed. There was zero reason to release any DLC for BL2 after the handsome collection and ultimate edition came out.

2k Have proved that they can still make a good (mini) story. I mean with the commander lilith dlc they still had a compelling and good story with new cool loot and awesome bosses.

Wonderlands had the beginnings of a good story but the lack of endgame variety and one skill tree per class made it feel very rushed and it felt like it was just content to tide us over till the next content injection. Also add that the DLCs are really just map packs. They had one DLC character which is a plus but honestly I wasn't very impressed.
BL3 had some issues at launch but they responded to the community's feedback. They issued numerous patches multiple times based on feedback. That was completely missing with wonderlands.
Ikr I am so sick of people using Covid to excuse why developers have been slacking or making bad games. Like if you really cared about the game you would have delayed it till conditions got better instead of just releasing it half assed & hoping those that like it will make a lot of excuses on your behalf for why the game feels buggy, rushed, etc.
If COVID was really the issue, why didn't they fix the problems AFTER launch? Why didn't they add more to the game???

Bad writing is a plague in all games as companies like Embracer dump billions into the industry and demand return on investment over quality. What’s the last AAA title from an established gaming series that had an amazing story? Those games still exist, but they’re smaller titles from independent software companies that haven’t been bought up yet, and still treat the creation of the games as a labor of love, not a function of capitalism.
GOW Ragnarok is a AAA game & that story is amazing.
Rdr2 is a masterpiece of story telling
I can’t even call it a function of capitalism, as capitalism would entail you make a good product people actually want to buy. This is hot garbage propped up by investors with no intention of making something customers want, because we the players aren’t the customer anymore. The investors are, and they want something totally different.

I understand that prespective of wanting it to be online, but as I said to various Borderlands Content Creators, Borderlands isnt an MMO, its a singleplayer game with Co-op elements. The End-game elements are primarily geared towards hardcore Borderlands players (Im a casual who doesnt like endgame, so I am biased) I play Borderlands to be alone. And "Gaming has evolved" No it hasnt chief. Sorry but I honestly dont agree there. Really good video and nice voice though :)

I’d rather let the series die then make it live service just doesn’t sit right with me.
At this point I'm losing confidence by the day that BL4 is going to be the game that we all know it could & should be & what's more disheartening is that I don't think GB even cares. As long as they hit their sales goals, they're perfectly fine with the franchise careening into a ditch. It's just the fact that the players are imploring GB to make simple changes or adjustments to the game, some of which they have shown the capability of addressing with past titles and yet they'll release games with some of those exact same issues. I don't know if it's obliviousness or hubris but I hope that GB realizes that they need to make changes or people will inevitably walk away from the franchise which would be a shame.
I don't want BL4 to happen unless they go back to the dark mad max aesthetic and make the game's story simple and about shooting people in the face again.
And never ever mention any of the characters from 3 or NTFTB again.
Also get rid of Ellie.

I think there is too many live service looter shooters. Not that i hate the concept but just as both awareness of the marlet but also for fans. I don't mind indie devs making their own borderlands like games but there should be more incentive of people still playing after the servers shutdown
You know what really hurts about BL3 writing? The dlc each get progressively better in terms of quality. Bounty of Blood is still my favorite, it’s one of those rare times someone wanted to tell a serious tale of revenge and redemption. Gearbox knows how to make a compelling story with Borderlands…they just don’t. It’s baffling.
To be fair, Bounty of Blood's ending was almost identical to BL2's

Bad story, sexist, messy is what the games have felt from BL3 and forward. I miss that great feeling of BL1 and BL2.

@@ItzTermx I personally enjoyed pre-sequel because of its uniqueness in that we were in more refined areas like the Hyperion station more often. Yes endgame was pretty meh but the gameplay and dialogue wasn’t so shit I wanted to tear my ears off

If borderlands was live service it would ruin the series even worse. This isnt destiny. Besides live service wouldnt fix bad writing. Borderlands 2 worked without live service. "Get with the times" most video games these days are trash, so tbh i would prefer to "get away from the times"
I knew from the fight for sanctuary dlc that the writing for 3 was going to be shite . It was never serious stuff in 1 or 2 but the writing in 3 was abysmal I reckon they looked at the gaming scene and saw the younger fortnite crowd as the biggest market share and aimed the writing in that direction . Is a real shame I got about 3200 hrs in 2 and about 40 in 3 I just can't cope with the car crash writing i finished it once then every time I boot it up I quit out after a hour and play something else
gearbox first and biggest "fuck you" to the players was when they announced they wont be making DLC characters for bl3. that decision alone shows you how much they care about their hardcore players.

I think thee hwolee issue is the impact of the story has jsut been boiled down so much over the years. We went from "Pan galactic threat being housed in an alien box." to "There are SEVERAL of these boxes that are EQUALLY dangerous." to "Oh yeah there's literally a hilarious amount of these things just kinda all over the placee and the aliens inside can be killed by three civilan's off the street and a cyro laser."
One issue i have is how they focus so much on trying to be childish but forget they are a rated r game
They went wrong when they leaned into temporary gags as the overall theme and away from the gritty and sardonic tones of the earlier games
Im hopeing beyond all hope they can somehow pull this around and bring the franchise back to its glory days. I know those hopes are likely in vain by i cant help but want it so badly. Borderlands 1, 2 hell even the pre-sequal are all games i enjoy full heartedly, borderlands 3's main story was fucked, dlcs were ok, the orginal tales from the borderlands was amazing, but the new one is just so goddamn horrible i cant even find a legitamate play through of it

@@HudMan4U I had a communication online with someone and they said “eventually, an Indy will do Borderlands but they’ll do it right.” I think about that a lot. Good gear system, good endgame, that’s something GBX will never do. They have no necessity to figure everything out, but someday it will happen. Probably in another game. Things really could be way more interesting, armor that gives you skill points, weapons that work with gear to give special status effects or whatever, but instead we get every game as a slightly better evolved version of Borderlands 1’s endgame.
It blows me away how little grenades have evolved outside of the spells from wonderlands. Even with all the gear pieces in wonderlands the whole thing is so simple it’s pointless.
Its crazy how bad the series fell from grace. I dont think ill be able to play another one

Claptastic voyage is hands down the best borderland dlc and I'm so bad that pre sequel never got any story dlcs after it
i always view TPS as just more BL2. and that's fantastic, BL2 is amazing and ive put like 1k hrs into it, it's nice to get a change sometimes and have new characters, settings, enemies, loot, mechanics and elements.
i have nothing but positive things to say about TPS, the hate has always confused me. it clearly isnt called BL3, idk why people expected it to be that.

Pre-sequel is just so unfortunate because if they add d more dedicated drops and kept getting funding it would have been so good because claptastic voyage is a top 3 dlc but sadly 2k cut the funding and put bl3 and tales into development
So many people talk about TPS as a failure because lack of content. But the studio literally went bankrupt and shut down. How can they out out more content for the gane if they don't exist anymore? I agree it'd be nice to have more IN the pre sequel but it's not like they just abandoned it, yuh know?

and you can pick the gun up around any lvl
lets say 30 and play until lvl 50 with this 1 gun
and it will still do great dmg
i dont even have to start with the INSANE degree of other problems that are to this day not only fixed
but SOMEHOW made their way from bl3 to wonderlands and STAYED unfixed
also the dlcs after bl3 dlc 2 started to get worse and worse, shorter and shorter
until we hit dlc 6 which was unfinished cut content and a few missions we should have had in base game + a cut boss we know was cut and functioned perfectly fine
dlc 5 was a mode that wwas primed for future bonus maps n shit but got abandoned
and THEN we hit wonderlands 10$ for about 8 minutes of content
How to fix Borderlands:
>bring back the mad max aesthetic from the 1st and 2nd games
> get rid of Ellie and Ava and resurrect Scooter
>hire Claptrap's original VA
>make NTFTB non canon and never mention its characters again
>just make the game and story about shooting people in the face.
I think you have some pretty good points in this video, but I would not like to see an online only Borderlands series at least not for the mainline series. That is due to the fact that I love the local split screen aspect of the Borderlands games and by making them online only and in a MMO format then the split screen aspect will likely go away and I know that probably won't affect any PC players but for console players and people who enjoy playing couch co-op that is a terrible idea. Unless they can keep the two to four player split screen then that is a no-go for me. If I want to play an online only loader shooter I'll just play Destiny. Which I think if they did make a split series like Wonderlands but for Borderlands MMO, maybe to test the waters, but I would be afraid that it would lead to them only doing MMO style games. I personally do not grind for hours and hours and hours on the same thing I think it's repetitive and boring, As long as they keep the loot to where people can play the game and you're not fixed into certain gun builds like in the second game then I'll be happy.
Man I now want Gearbox to just stop making games and hold off from making BL4 for a while because BL3 and NTFTB were terrible in the writing aspect. They have no moments where I care about what's going on; it's just them trying really hard to be funny, but it's so painful that when you get to the more "serious" moments in the games, you can't really feel anything from them because the characters don't have you hooked because all you will be thinking about is, "God, can you guys knock it off with the cringe jokes for 5 minutes?".
At this point, I am sure Gearbox isn't even trying with Borderlands anymore; they are just trying to reach their sales quota, and that's it. Why should they bother even trying when gamers will be their PR team and defend them from criticism about the writing and bugs from people? Throwing statements like "Be grateful we even got the game at all," "Just wait for the patch and stop being so entitled," "That's your fault that you bought the game on launch, dumbass," etc.

You hit it with Octavio, what happened to the unique characters this series was known for? Now we get a Gucci teen stuck in an adult body. Borderlands needs to look at it's world from the first 2 games, remember when people thought borderlands 1 was a fallout rip off (lol). Yeah that's because it was an alternative post apocalyptic mad Max styled light RPG influenced by Diablo... It was alot of things, but it was still it's own.

The problem with new borderlands isnt rlly wokeness as much as it is an attempt to appeal to younger audiences, borderlands is actually one of the best examples of progressive media lol, most the characters are lgbt without them having their sexuality be their main personality trait, but now the gaming audience is made up of dumb fortnite kids so borderlands has to try everything to appeal to them, starting with the epic exclusivity, having the main villan of bl3 being a twitch streamer, trying to appeal to the twitch culture, rlly bad skins and emotes, sliding, mantling, basically call of duty/apex movement, a pseudo battle royale mode, theres so much i could list, borderlands is a series that has lost its identity and is trying to appeal to the fortnite kids rather than its own fans
The younger generations are the target audience now. Wokeness will be a component in game development for major studios.
This is why I mostly play indies, and Japanese games.

Honestly feels like Gearbox is petty that other companies did something better with their characters and built a more interesting narrative. Yeah Maya death sucks but also shes a Jedi, so force ghost and no one is ever really gone. But Aurelias character turn after the TPS is just bad and her death is just a waste.

What pains me to say is, I honestly dont care about Borderlands past The Pre-Sequel/2.
I live in a household where everyone plays Borderlands quite a lot, I started playing Pre-Sequel in 2022 and im on my 11th playthrough now.
I have yet to finish Bl3 where it was left in 2019... That just breaks my heart.
And I know the game has seen some significant improvements, but first impressions matter and none of us even think about BL3, and all we know about future installments is that...its bad. Just bad, thats all.
Borderlands was a mashup between halo and gta. B2 added Portal 2. B3 is fortnite.
I think one of the biggest mistakes BL makes with their games is bowing to the snowflake community. One of the major things we love about Borderlands is it's dark humour, and you can already feel in BL3, that they are softening up, just because they are afraid of the backlash of a few easily offended, but too loud people, who won't even play the game. BL3-s jokes were meh, and New Tales jokes are, yes, cringe. Massive cringe. Yeah making borderlands online makes it dead man. I'm looking for fun not destiny 2. The only reason me and my 20 friends keep buying this game is because it's not an MMO and it's a looters shooter. It's not about evolution at all. Do you know how goofy it feels as an adult to buy two Xboxs to play borderlands with your girlfriend? Screaming from room to room or having a headset to hear your own echo. Then when your friends come over for fun it's like welp that's off the table it's only MMO so next time bring over more Xbox and TVs guys we are doing this shit like Halo in 2006. Don't get me started on the MMO aspects that they might wanna add. Like I don't want to buy skins in the game. I want to be able to farm everything and play on my own too. Once it's an MMO I can't play alone either. If you take away the only thing that keeps it from being compared to other games that would end it why would you remove those aspects?
The problem is they hire these writers that are very opinionated politically and socially. They just can't help but base their stories around these views that MOST people don't agree with or don't want to be involved with. New Tales for example all the women are bosses and badass and all the men are stupid useless goofballs. Yeah there is a VERY loud minority of gamers that want these narratives but most people just want good even stories. Both men and women can be competent at the same time. But no, everyone needs to be represented and if a straight white male is in it he must be dumb and worthless. I'll be honest. Borderlands was pretty slow at getting into this level of writing but its starting to ramp up. These are extremist views to begin with. So it is never a good idea to put them into stories for mass consumption. (unless you're the extremist)
At this point, I can't comprehend what they could do to save this franchise. The writing ever since Borderlands 3 has been unanimously crowned awful, and the new Tales from the Borderlands is just a huge financial flop. All this deviation from the source material and pandering to audiences (that don't even acknowledge their franchise, btw) destroyed this game and it's world. This was the only franchise keeping gearbox afloat, and they chose to kill it. One of the few instances in games where writing and story plot can be so bad that it pushes the audience away from the otherwise fun gameplay.
I really hope that sometime in the future, there is a better spiritual successor to the Borderlands formula. The only thing that would earn the good graces of gearbox's previous audience back, is to retcon everything over the last 4 years and start again.

They should do a borderlands games where you fight all of the enemy types from the main 3 games, and farm all the bosses from the main 3 games, and have all of the gun manufacturers be present as well as all the shield manufacturers and bring back pearlescent weapons and the seraph items too.
I think when it comes to story they need to keep the main story much more serious. Like in BL2 the story is mostly serious its just funny because of the character jack is but even then he still comes off as a serious threat. Then with the online service I completely agree ever since bl2 I have hoped for a diablo/poe online service. Where we have seasonal characters, trading is important, and a leaderboard to show off whos gotten the most loot or killed the most bosses. I mean imagine if you wanted to play bl3 from start again but when you get on it pops up "a new season has start" and the theme of that season is pearl hunting and introduces new pearl rarity along with a new takedown. Now you're hyped for new content and you have a reason to start a fresh character or after seeing that and you dont care about the seasonal leaderboards you can hop on a non seasonal character and just check out the new content. I think borderlands could take over gaming with that concept. I mean they should just look at the popularity spikes every season brings to poe and diablo. I mean shit look at the community during the loot hunt event that the community puts together people love that so imagine if something similar was put into the game. I swear its as easy to see as 2+2=4
I should also add for anyone reading this and screaming at the idea of having to playthrough bl3 story a bunch I'd also love an adventure mode like in diablo 3 where you start off in whatever the main city is in that game and the whole game is scaled to your level and you get to chose different bounties/quests to do to level up.
That system should be done with Wonderlands since the end game of chaos chambers is just doing rifts bypassing the season in Diablo 3.

But The Glitch Rarity, Boosting(And Oz Kits In General), Grinder, Fun Skill Trees, Laser Weapons, Cryo Introduction, And The Fact That We Only Had 1 And A Half Dlcs For This Game But Claptastic Voyage Is One Of The Best Dlcs From The 2010s Makes Me Personally Think It's Still One Of The Borderlands Games

Been playing Borderlands since the original release and yeah there's some cool moments I guess but I cared more about the guns than any of the plot
The writing for Borderlands 2 is almost entirely carried by the ad-libs of Handsome Jack's voice actor and all the DLC content writing is incredibly mediocre.
I also didn't even know that Scooter was dead going into Fight for Sanctuary and it felt like he kinda just died off-screen because I never played Tales from the Borderlands because once again, I play borderlands for the buildcrafting and guns instead of the plot.

ngl, I actually enjoyed bl3, gameplay and most dlc over main story. I even enjoyed the new feel of wonderlands but the constant nerfs kept mucking up my character build and gear gathering and the dlc 1 disappointed me but dlc 2 and more nerfs made me uninstall the game.
i feel like the writers *do* like the series, but just dont know what to do with characters and how to make things work well. also, the gunplay in bl3 is some of the best in my opinion, i wish they would've added dlc characters, not even like, legacy characters but new ones would've been great
In long term story telling, there is a concept called flanderization. It's when a character devolves over time to become a single attribute or trope that use to be one part of their larger character. Peter Griffin and SpongeBob are popular examples of this.
Borderlands to me, became this on a franchise level. The unexpected depth and weight of the series, what was mastered in Borderlands 2, has devolved into a small pocket of cookie cutter tropes and character styles copy and pasted over and over again. The franchise became flanderized.
The new tales honestly made me laugh a lot of times. It was enjoyable at some parts but i also felt the humor has gone too far. And i knew at that moment this game will be roasted. Especially when you compare it to TTG's version, this was just full non stop jokes and it diluted the essence of the characters.
It seems to me that what happened to Borderlands was that Borderlands 2 was lightning in a bottle and they have suffered from chronic "lightning does not strike twice" ever since. BL1 had basically nothing for the story. The characters were interesting, but barely present. The most neat thing was the world itself and the loot. The only real character was Tannis, and the only things worth knowing about was what happened to the planet that caused all the companies to pull out, what the hell was up with Sirens, and what the hell was up with Eridians.
Then they hired that one guy who took the bare skeleton of BL1 and brought it to life.
Characters were fleshed out. Worldbuilding was had. An interesting, funny, awful villian hounded us throughout.
They handed the IP to Telltale, and Telltale as a company was lightning in a bottle. So people loved the first Tales from the Borderlands.
Then they made the presequel and it feels like... I dunno, it feels like the Below Zero to Subnautica. It's like, half a game worth of content at full game price, and the story isn't as engaging...
And then Telltale died and they got rid of the guy that bottled the lightning at Gearbox.
And that's when BL3 and Tales 2 happened.
So, you had one good mainline game, one good spinoff, and one decent spinoff, and that's all effectively the buildup, story, and fallout for BL2. So, there's BL1, standing there awkwardly on its own with its weird DLCs.
There is Borderlands 2 with presequel on one arm, and Tales on the other.
Then there is the ugly pair of BL3 and Tales 2, off muttering enviously in a corner over BL2 and its connected spinoffs and conspiring to murder them.
I don't like what they have done to Rhys, and I do not want Borderlands being live service that sounds horrid with the way the industry is currently, I think they should allow mod support and offer tools for people to make things, the writing team needs a rework, bl3 was awful story wise but great in the mechanics department. The only points I wanted to leave a comment and touch up on.
The main problem with the franchise's writing recently is the people behind it. Just like modern writers in other media, they have no interest in building an established world and prefer to run with their "superior" ideas.
Also Gearbox itself seems to hold disdain for TPS and Tales. Whether that's because they were made by other studios, i dont know, but they've either torn down or ignored characters and plot points established in those games.

Asking for the next game to be Live as Service, is asking to kill the franchise...Gaming has not evolved this way and be assured that in the matter of "Live as Service", only a few lucky games have managed to endure over time, Borderlands is not an MMO.
