The problem about making a game about topical things is that game development takes a long time. This is especially true when you base your entire main plot around it.
I agree but I wouldn't argue that the entire main plot is based around anything topical. If you're talking about streaming being the topical thing then I'd even argue that it's more topical today. But I don't think streaming had any effect on the plot at all, it was basically just a reason for the calypso twins to have such a huge following
I really like the new map and have no trouble with it, especially helps figuring out when you have to go underground because you can easily find the spot where it leads down.
I disagree, and find it to be one of the worst features of the game, that and the fact you cant track more then 1 mission at a time, I missed a lot of side missions due to this and when i realized they were on a different planet i was already to high a level to care and go back.
The map in Borderlands 3 absolutely sucks...it is like the map in Control, and that one sucks as well...especially given that Control wasn't even supposed to have a map in the first place.

Seriously my biggest gripe is how they continue to use the same terrible UI design. It's slow, it's ugly, it's not all that functional. Developers need to prioritize fast usable UI.
Yup, and death animations. I die alot in this game, death should have no animation, just respawn me! I feel like inventory and the rest of the options should be in a separate button.

Randy is a certified dickhole, and those tweets aren't by far the worst he's done. Not wanting to buy the game, or at least from the Epic Store or until it's on sale for his consistently shitty behavior is justified IMO.
I never laughed when the twins talked, but that handsome jack clip from bl2 (which i already knew about) made me burst out laughing. Now thats the kind of dark humor that i like.
The part about PVP is so true! I’n getting really tired of everyone obsessing over numbers and competitive pvp when we could all just be having some goddamn fun
Indeed! Everything now is just based on competitive and ESPORTS! it's all so toxic, and everyone acts like they got something to prove or that they're better than someone else! It's crazy, man! I just love to chill and have fun with games!
That's a good way of putting it, true for the gameplay too When I went back and played that free dlc they just brought out for bl2 a couple months ago it didn't feel good to play at all, because the gunplay sucked compared to more modern games and it didn't feel like I was actually firing anything. I like the new 3d map, I don't understand why some people don't like it.I like the small visual updates to the UI in general. It still feels like borderlands to me. Borderlands 3 is what I wanted and more. It's still the classic looter shooter that started the fps loot shoot genre, and gearbox didn't try to completely re-invent borderlands. Great review. I just have an issue with you bringing up open worlds changing like destiny and war frame (Public Events etc). You fail to mention that BL3 can actual be played offline unlike those games that have changing worlds. I personally would sacrifice a lame public event and have the ability to play game when I want where I want.
you don't really need to forfeit a changing world to have offline though - the world can still be doing things around you, you just need to simulate what might happen if there were other people in the world then change the events accordingly.
CyanPhoenix it actually does in this game. Rare world spawns occur and im sure there is a secret raid boss tucked in. I think some maps are just too big and that is the real issue.
I knew the word 'legendary' had lost all meaning in games when I saw some footage of a legendary enemy in Fallout 4 that was just a regular crab thing that went down in seconds. Got to wonder who was telling all the epic stories about that thing and its accomplishments.
One thing I can say about the story, I have never hated and wanted to kill the villians as much as I did in this game. The twins are basically the Paul brothers and god are they annoying.
It doesn’t look “fantastic” because it’s “animated comic” graphics but it’s done to the best of its ability for what you can do with this type of graphical choice
Borderlands 3 is a harsh reminder of what the looter shooter genre moved away from. It started the genre, but no one followed suit. A diverse RPG skill system, a plethora of loot that you can't help but pick and choose, a villain that is ever present (regardless of how poorly done they are), and most of all an experience that feels whole. Games in the genre release and they then promise a "whole" at a later date. Regardless if I got my money's worth, I almost never feel like I got a full game. Borderlands 3 felt complete from start to finish, and engaged me from start to finish. If they add more to the game in the future, I won't feel like they're adding it because they had something left over to give. Borderlands 3 gave everything, and anything else after this point is *more*
@Grym Can you really blame anyone for think that Borderlands invented the genre? Most people never even heard of Hellgate:London. And 2 years is not that long of time before.
Agree that 3 is a big step up visually but it looks like you're on the non remastered version of 2 with all the settings turned down in the comparison.
compulsive jaywalker apples to apples though. It’s what both games look like on release. I get what you mean, I play BL2 with the remastered graphics on and it looks passable but BL3 is still far better.
I noticed that as well. I played Borderlands 2 back when it was released and with the texture pack this year again. In both terms it looked way better than the footage shown in this review. The comparison shines a bad light on this review.
Yeah tho 2 is really cheap and you'll understand a lot more of the characters and references to the story if you start with that one, but the story has never been the focus of these games even tho they have more of it in 2 and 3 i still think it would be fine to start with the third game in the franchise on top of that the humor and writing people are complaining about will still be fresh and probably land a little better if you start with 3

I feel like you should seperate the Online Loot Shooters like Destiny, Division and Warframe from a offline or coop focused Loot Shooter Borderlands. The online ones have gotten the term MMO lites because what drives them are the same reasons why MMO RPG like WoW, FFXIV, GW2, BDO are driven by. These games requires world bosses, events, recurring enemies and whatnot because they are built on the idea that they can always be played. Borderlands isn't. You choose when to play it. I agree with your video but the comparisons between the other loot shooters and Borderlands feel like comparing Skyrim to ESO.

Amazing review. I only really disagreed with the subjective stuff like the story and characters, but as you mentioned its subjective in nature and I have a pro borderlands bias. That being said, if there was one thing I think should be mentioned, is that bl3 does have "event" like quests, in the form of map based challenges that reward players for exploring the new ginormous maps, and rare spawn enemies. These rare spawns are probably the closest to world bosses that bl3 has, and they can be encountered rarely in certain places in certain maps, and if you kill them they can drop good loot and they even unlock a kill quest for people on ur friends list. An example of this is in the moon map, you can come across "Dinklebot" in a certain spot, who drops a legendary Loot-o-gram that you can farm and turn into crazy earl for white rarity gear as a joke. Or Borman Nates on promethea who drops a pistol that shoots knives. They are pretty fun and a good addition in my book Either way, another great review from Skillup. Im glad you reviewed this as ive seen a lot of people who brushed the game off entirely because of the epic and 2k stuff, and im happy you gave this gem of a game the gameplay recognition it deserves
snark567 well yeah but comedy and story telling are much more subjective then most. MOST people will agree that floaty weapons that feel like nerf guns are bad but there are surly some people out there that prefer it.
@@Postpar A lot of people liking something doesn't make it objectively good, you can still have people who dislike that thing, it's all based on personal preference regardless of how popular or unpopular it is. Saying the game has good gameplay is subjective because it depends on what the person values, saying the game has performance issues is objective because those issues exist regardless of what your opinions are.
Unrelated question, I finished borderlands 2 but never played any dlcs which I own. Is B2 DLC good? (I would have to play from the start since I switched to ps4) Asking for a friend.
The last Borderlands thing I played was Tales, and that was def a shock when I went into the BL3 and found that the writing felt so “blegh” compared to that (plus no Fiona 😭). Gunplay and updates to optimization, UI, etc. might keep me around, but we’ll see.
And yet I've had a nearly flawless experience outside of 1 crash, running between 80-120 FPS @ 1440p depending on the area with just a few settings turned down/off (volumetric fog off, reflections medium). The game has a fuckton of content out of the box compared to most modern games. Some unfortunate performance issues (which seem a bit random and hardware driven) doesn't equal "not ready to ship".
@@JWiLL0255 Its just a redicilous circlejerk at this point. I agree with you man. Performance is pretty much acceptable (flawed, but acceptable) and the game is crazy fun.
@Bill Gates Lmfao what a ridiculous reply. I'm supporting the devs of Borderlands 3 because it's a fantastic game. The Epic Launcher might suck but I couldn't care less once I'm in game. Newsflash: People hated Steam back in the day too. None of these corporations are your friend. Support devs who make great games - that's literally it.
The mission structure is what's killing it for me. If it was as simple as go here, kill some dudes, pick up the McGuffin and come back like it was in the first Borderlands it wouldn't be so bad. What's killing it is the extra steps thrown into that simple formula. It's not so bad for the main story missions, but then they use that expanded formula for ALL of the side quests too. It just drags out the experience and makes the poor writing feel even worse.
borderlands takes stupid jokes, cringe or not, and still makes it funny. it could be the dumbest shit, i’ll still laugh. that’s what makes the game unique and enjoyable.
I could laugh at many of the side missions and some cringe-laughter was in there as well. I find that there are just some (or many) misplaced jokes, like one in a story mission that literally destroyed the tension of the whole scene.
I was disappointed that this game didn't have neither the secret vault symbols achievements nor the cryptic clue achievements that made for fun engaging exploring of the maps. Instead you have predictable achievements that are already marked on the map. At least to me that was a regression form Bordelands 2.
Are you on PC or console? Because there is great HUB video that went through all the settings for best of both worlds set up. I have a 1080ti and 8086k and get 111 fps at 1440p with them.
Haven't finished this game yet, but so far I LOVE the gameplay. They didn't go down the Destiny route with MMO nonsense, no dailys or weeklies. The gameplay is a fantastic improvement over Borderlands 2. The sidequests are just as loveable as ever. It's just what I wanted.
The main issue with BL3 is many people outgrew the writing. Many people started playing the series in middle school and the humor didn't evolve with the growing audience. Although, tales from the borderlands did a good job with improving on the writing but that's a different team.
I chuckled just as much playing this as 2, why Skill Up praises 'Shooty McShootface' and trashes the writing in 3 is beyond me. It's hit and miss, just like 2, and imo 3 has nothing as abominably cringe as Tiny Tina, and shes actually still in the game! haha.
Don't forget, a new generation is in middle/high-school who likely still can relate to the humour that the older players may have grown out of... I imagine the target audience remained the same and that is why the writing did not mature at the same rate of the original player base.

Honestly, people keep saying that there are other looter-shooters, but Borderlands is the only series that gets it for me.
Same
I don't know. I feel other Looter Shooters outdo Borderlands in many more aspects. Destiny gets social elements, Exotic Quests and far more interesting worlds and events. Division Gets more tactical gameplay. Warframe gets sheer depth from so many systems. Borderlands feels like is playing same tricks and hoping they still work.
Some people like it simple and same. While also prefering things to stay the same.
@@FraserSouris I mean you point out what the others do better but miss the things that all the others do work which make borderlands superior. Destiny is held back by its overeliance on pure engrams and trying to force people to pay real money, its pvp element that hurts its pve, its story and characters which are worse than all 3 borderlands games, and it's worse mission design and enemy variety.
@@FraserSouris also as he says himself in this video, destiny and other games in this genre feel like work. Destiny has gotten ridiculous with its grind.

I noticed that as well. I played Borderlands 2 back when it was released and with the texture pack this year again. In both terms it looked way better than the footage shown in this review. The comparison shines a bad light on this review.
@@LeSangDuTigre The BL2 footage was from either the xbox or ps3. I played the hell out of Borderlands 2 on PS3 so you can trust me on the claim.
Why the fuck would you compare it to the remaster...
Any particular reason why you're showing ps vita gameplay of borderlands 2 for comparison?
I would like to know which are all those shooters that eclipsed the borderlands mechanics that are mentioned at 1:50. anthem?, dlcstiny?
Does it make sense to play this if I haven't played 1 and 2???
Yeah tho 2 is really cheap and you'll understand a lot more of the characters and references to the story if you start with that one, but the story has never been the focus of these games even tho they have more of it in 2 and 3 i still think it would be fine to start with the third game in the franchise on top of that the humor and writing people are complaining about will still be fresh and probably land a little better if you start with 3
Refuse to support 2k or epic so I'll be waiting on this one. Looks like more Borderlands though which is pretty cool with me.
Sawyer have fun with that. I’ll enjoy the hell out of this in your place 😁
Steam relaese all the way.
It will be patched up by then.lol.

Tripl3M but comparing Skyrim to eso is also a fair comparison because there are a lot of similarities, or you want to compare eso with destiny?
RonixEnclave no he didn’t, he was just explaining how restricting it is, because it is
@@fatbroccoli8 having a strong online pvp element in these types of games is super restrictive in other ways too. They dont have to worry about guns being unfair for pvp or abilities being too crazy. That's what I dislike about destiny nothing is ever super cool because everything has to be fair in pvp.
Sectric exactly, that’s what Shill up was saying
@@TheSectric Striker Titans with One-Eyed Mask is fair? Bruh... Mountaintop/Recluse is fair? Bruh... Short examples of things that ARENT fair and extremely powerful/broken. So, it leaves me to believe you haven't played it recent times.
Great Review...Whats the name of music at the end of the video ?
On PS4, I have major lag in the UI. Solo. Like, a solid 10 seconds to load from game and moment to moment load between tabs. Any console users notice that?
you can switch between quests without entering the menus. you can even see the currently assigned keys next to the quest name
This was a life-saver for me once I realized it.
I would've liked that option on the map itself, so I don't have to scroll left, change mission, go back onto the map, check location, repeat.
They are pretty fun and a good addition in my book
Either way, another great review from Skillup. Im glad you reviewed this as ive seen a lot of people who brushed the game off entirely because of the epic and 2k stuff, and im happy you gave this gem of a game the gameplay recognition it deserves
Everything is subjective, except performance issues.
snark567 well yeah but comedy and story telling are much more subjective then most.
@@snark567 Which can be fixed with patches and usually don't leave a lasting impression on those who wait.

Unrelated question, I finished borderlands 2 but never played any dlcs which I own. Is B2 DLC good? (I would have to play from the start since I switched to ps4)
Asking for a friend.
Daek _ BL2 dlc is fantastic especially “Tiny Tina’s assault on dragons keep” one of the greatest dlc’s of all time
@@colin5376 I'll check it out bud, thanks!
The last Borderlands thing I played was Tales, and that was def a shock when I went into the BL3 and found that the writing felt so “blegh” compared to that (plus no Fiona 😭). Gunplay and updates to optimization, UI, etc. might keep me around, but we’ll see.
Of course it wasn't ready to ship. That's why we got the Beta on Epic Store
The ''boycotters'' want to play this game so bad, so they try to feel better about themselves by saying ''lol its still in beta enjoy testing it xD!'' in the mean time, here we are, enjoying the hell out of this game.
I agree with you man. Performance is pretty much acceptable (flawed, but acceptable) and the game is crazy fun.
@Bill Gates TIL buying games on epic games makes you a worthless piece of shit. Thank you Bill Gates Very Cool!!!
Support devs who make great games - that's literally it.
ive started borderlands 2 and i dont even bother listenung to the dialogue, i just listen to my music or a stream in the background lol
You didn't mention auto-loot from chests, which is a game changer
Unpopular opinion here, but borderlands 3 made me chuckle a few times. I think the humour is pretty much the same as the BD2 and the pre sequel
I loved out loud a bunch of times. It fully embraces the stupidety and cringe and is fully aware that it's dumb af, which is rather rare these days.
thats good
borderlands takes stupid jokes, cringe or not, and still makes it funny. it could be the dumbest shit, i’ll still laugh. that’s what makes the game unique and enjoyable.
I could laugh at many of the side missions and some cringe-laughter was in there as well. I find that there are just some (or many) misplaced jokes, like one in a story mission that literally destroyed the tension of the whole scene.
Yeah I guess you're right, but I miss Jack's dark humor.
I was disappointed that this game didn't have neither the secret vault symbols achievements nor the cryptic clue achievements that made for fun engaging exploring of the maps. Instead you have predictable achievements that are already marked on the map. At least to me that was a regression form Bordelands 2.
Bob Ross streams are relaxing. Just listening to Mr.Ross talk is wonderful
6:47-7:54 and that is why Borderlands is THE looter shooter. Everything else is just a shitty-paying part-time job disguised as a game.

How’s the performance in 2020? just got a 4K and it looks beautiful...but still full msrp.
I imagine the target audience remained the same and that is why the writing did not mature at the same rate of the original player base.
.Rid of Denuvo and DRM and game should run 2x better. but it 2k probably 0 chance
