This an excellent video, I am glad you made it because it can only benefit the community. Seeing the downfall of borderlands is tragic, and this BS goes a lot deeper than I had initially thought. When I stopped playing warframe it was also a dying game, until devs listened to their community and now it’s extremely popular and has tons of returning players such as myself. So Borderlands can be saved, but they really have to take the time to listen.

199% agree that gun proficiency was much better than badass rank and guardian rank.
I prefer BL1 gun parts system. I found a godroll blue lvl 19 Torgue shotgun that lasted until I was level 40. It had rolled bonus damage AND bonus pellets. ON A BLUE. I think crazy rare stuff like that should be in all Borderlands games.
I also LOVE that the enemies use the guns they drop. So if they drop a legendary, they're using it to try kill you.

    • @jamesh.metaphor5131

@@robertmajors1737 You farm by killing bosses with lootsplosions of random loot (BL1), or raid bosses (BL2) or running through maps and getting world drops to feed the grinders (TPS) or rotating through all the bosses instead of just the one on repeat (BL3) or running through challenge maps and trading currency for limited loot pool drops (WL).
There's a ton of other options, instead of "kill this one boss a thousand times, and save-quit-reload in between", which has always been the most boring way to play. Sure, having a target that makes it easy to find a given item is easier, but I'd rather kill 10 different bosses on repeat, instead of just one, or run through maps killing mobs instead of just one enemy.
I'm one of the many players who have been pointing out that save-quit farming one boss sucks, ever since BL2, and we always get shouted down by those who prefer it over playing the game (running through whole maps and killing bosses and badass named enemies every so often) because they like grinding. It's not the best method, but it gets used over and over because gearbox suck at implementing better ones and give in to player backlash instead of focusing on perfecting whatever new system they bring in. If they stuck to another system and got it right, it'd take over as a better way to farm stuff.

    Hey Boderlands Casualplayer here,
i highy disagree with you. Borderlands in my eyes can be compared to Destiny 2 and Warfarme in its CORE gameplay. BUT.
D2 and WF are designed around Multiplayer and Long (like LONG LONG) term playing. Where every Borderlands game is Story driven and actually made to be a Storygame. Yes you do have Some Endgame and thats okay. But Since (as you said) there is not that much Endgame scaling etc. Its very clear that the devs aim for Story over 10k hours grind games.
And thats why i love the series. I played BO3 and Tiny Tinas Wonderland onec with all Vault hunters and invested like another 200+ hours into the Endgame in Bo3 to get M10 etc. Thats (imo) fine 100%. When im (and i guess im talking for 99% of the Borderlands players) buying a Borderlands game, i buy it for the Story. Humble and chaotic characters combined with a little bit of Grind at the end is where Borderlands is and should remain.
If they invest too much in the RPG stuff im 100% sure the game will fall flat.....

IF YOU WANT A FUCKING GAME THAT HAS NO STORY GO PLAY TITANFALL OR DESTINY OR THE DIVISION OR WHATEVER LEAVE BORDERLANDS THE FUK ALONE. You want online Co-op fine, idc... But I want more story, more narrative... I AM NOT HAPPY WITH JUST ANOTHER RAIDBOSS. What makes Borderlands special is the fact that it is different... They didn't go for the hyper-realistic or the Call of Duty or future military, they went cell shaded and the story/characters/vibe of the game is so unique, there is nothing like it. • @jamesh.metaphor5131
      @jamesh.metaphor5131 4 месяца назад +2

I think there's a balance between being ABLE to play three or more times with a character vs HAVING to play that much. I think the ideal balance is having the first playthrough be normal and having an endgame mode like mayhem that just scales enemies to your level, then have a second playthrough that adds more variation in enemies and stuff, while being a little tougher. But, crucially, let us reset the second playthrough, and ideally let us reset to given main quest points we've already played to. So, if we want to replay a specific side quest or main quest, we can reset our playthrough to that point and do the quest we want.
That way we can replay the game as many times as we want, and replay the bits we like best even more, but we don't feel like we have to endlessly repeat quests we dislike or bits we found less fun.

I disagree. BL2 had many different biomes on Pandora. Most of the biomes were very similar to BL3, the difference being the biomes were locked away on a different planet.
Take Eden 6 for example. It's my least favourite planet in BL3 tbh. It's a similar biome to the Hammerlock DLC in BL2.
They could just have every biome available in BL3 but still have it all on Pandora.
I found it annoying to have to go to the bridge in Sanctuary 3, input what planet you want to go to, watch the ship fly to the planet, walk to the drop pod... That was incredibly tedious and pointless imo. Nearly as tedious as all the walking/following NPC's that plagues BL3.
If they can remove those tedious aspects in the next game, that would be amazing.

The borderlands 4 story should be: Lilith is trapped in a vault after bl3. Through the vault she gets siren powers that lets her communicate through time and thus with herself or the crew at the start of the bl3 story. With this we can soft retcon bl3 while still having it exist and correct all the bad writing and how the story went down. Maybe the great war could come as a result of a siren changing the timeline and the Eridians not liking that.

The rarity issue depends on the game. In 2 and TPS I would often have half or more of my loadout be green for normal and TVHM. In those games green absolutely had a place. In 3 and Wonderlands I only used greens a bit past the tutorial sections (or challenge runs), because higher tier loot was so common. Let me say one thing about this whole ordeal with all the Borderlands games. Be prepared this is a loooong story. Sorry.
I came into this wonderful series with the first game of the series back in 2015. I got that for free being an Xbox Live Gold member. I really didn’t know what I was doing and couldn’t get past Sledge.
Then my wife asked if she could play co-op with me since we were playing all the Gears of War games together and the rest is history. We also played through Borderlands 2 (also base game for free thanks to Gold) which we loved even more that we bought the season pass, the 2 DLC vault hunters and even the headhunter packs. It wasn’t until we bought the handsome collection that we never played the DLCs for the first game until then even though we were going to buy them at some point.
Now for Borderlands 3, which my wife gave me the Super Deluxe Edition along with a brand new Xbox One S for my birthday which was 1 month after the game’s launch. We had a blast going through the game and even going through all the DLC that came with it and yes we did buy season 2 pass as well. Unfortunately the game is in a state where it crashes a lot when we are both playing and crashing about half the time in single player mode. From what I gather it appears to be a problem with the Xbox version which I’ve heard it also happens on the current gen Xbox systems. I could be wrong, but I’m just stating how I feel the state of that game as it stands now. I have gotten more enjoyment just playing Arms Race (not mayhem levels) more than I did playing the story over and over again with other characters.
I will say one thing about Borderlands 4. If this war that was hinted back in TPS doesn’t happen which is a loose end that I would like to be tied, then I may have to reevaluate continuing with this series and just play the old ones like an old man who cannot let go. Pretty much the same story as you. We started playing when bl1 came out and we found it by chance just because it was a co-op game. BL3 on Xbox series S still crashes about every hour playtime for us when we open inventory or we hit a cut scene. They released the game and bailed on us, it took well over a year to sort the split screen issues out. My advice is don't give them any money for a pre order because if your system or how you play has an issue, the game will probably be $10 by the time it's fixed, if it ever gets fixed at all.

Gearbox knows how to make a great game. The community knows how to balance that game. Gearbox refuses to listen to them, and ruins the game with terrible balance. The more they interfere, the worse it gets and the quicker players leave. BL3 was a great example of this.

Great video, great points, you're pretty much saying everything that me and my Borderlands friends have been thinking for a LONG time now.
Though, one thing i will personally disagree on is that I actually do... usually enjoy doing multiple playthroughs on the same character. I like to feel how different things are the second and third time after being really leveled up. BUT I do not like it for BL3. I genuinely dread the idea of doing further playthroughs, partially due to the story but also due to how much time you spend in cutscenes or just standing around listening to characters talk.
But I do also agree that there should be more to do in the endgame beyond that, especially since some people don't enjoy replaying it. And if they do have repeatable playthroughs, let us skip over the cutscenes and dialogue that we've already heard. It's insane that it took them so long to add skippable cutscenes.
Also, I love what you said about weapon proficiencies. I never played the first game, but I played games with similar mechanics that I i love. I also REALLY wish they'd bring back characters being good work specific weapon types.
They absolutely can do better. But will they? I'm not holding my breath

The problems the game had was lack of farmable bosses making the grinder the endgame content and dropping service before the season pass was up.

And then I’d want Borderlands 4 to be the conclusion of the original characters and honestly give about 8 to 9 years to do a Borderlands 5, to put time between Borderlands 4 and Borderlands 5 but adding brand new characters to follow along with, and I think they should be given more dialogue, and more screentime in cutscenes and honestly the other vault hunters u didn’t pick should be Npcs that help along with the story while also developing their characters as well. Borderlands is my favorite game. Has been since 2009, and I gotta say the only things I complain about in Borderlands is how they havent added a flying vehicle yet, most of the bosses drop the same loot, and legendaries stopped being special. In bl3, you’d find one LITERALLY every 3 minutes of playing in high levels and it gets annoying. Borderlands 2 was definitely the best one for two main reasons. 1, the sheer amount of content they added was awesome, 10 dlc’s… cmon. And 2, I loved seeking out and farming specific bosses and enemies for a specific gun. In the new games everyone drops everything and it don’t feel the same.

I agree with a lot of your takes I personally think the best endgame scaling we’ve had is between either borderlands 1 or pre sequel. I much prefer the gun scaling and proficiency system from borderlands 1. I also believe they NEED to bring back pearls but not generally shitty ones like bl2 had but truly awesome ones like borderlands 1 had. If you got a Serpens to drop it was a godly weapon for an assault rifle only build on Roland. And the raid boss thing I even brought that up with k6 himself in the video he made about the “proving grounds raid bosses” that there are truly only about 3-4 raid bosses in the game and he told me I was wrong? I just don’t understand why you would call them something they aren’t

What is your view on drop rates?
You mention that gearbox should respect the players time, but i've seen many people complain that the drop rates in BL3 are too high. Personally i like the higher drop rates, i do not feel rewarded from killing a boss over and over just to get a gun, i instead feel relieved that the grind is over and that i can move on. When it comes to bosses i enjoy fighting them, not spending hours insta-killing them for loot. It feels a bit like hitting a slot machine. I want to be rewarded for skill, not time investment and luck. I enjoyed BL3 far more because of the amount of weapons and the lack of needing to farm them, i'd get most weapons from world drops. It meant i could focus on the gunplay instead and i got 1100 hours in BL3 vs my 250 hours in BL2 because of it. Do you think most people enjoy farming?
I absolutely respect people for enjoying farming (i do too in rare cases and its sort of the point of the game), but maybe borderlands just isnt for me.
Otherwise, great video! I just hope that gearbox learns from their mistakes, since they clearly havent and it seems they dont care which worries me.

i got into the series recently, and the myriad of technical issues is utterly baffling. There's constant memory leaks, the in-game voice chat in the first game lags out multiplayer so much you have to edit files to even half-way fix it (alongside enemy stats not scaling well at all in multiplayer), there's random broken collision all over the maps, the UI is weirdly broken and barely-function in everything past the first game (mine randomly became ultra-bright in BL2 and i still haven't found a fix for it), etc.
i don't do multiplayer (just did it once in the first game cuz some people wanted to try it out), but i'm kinda floored at how poorly it was handled in the first game (and possibly second, but idk for sure).
there's a ton of other things i think could be improved (like the inventory being bad, but that would require an entire overhaul), but the random technical issues are the main ones for me. It's just annoying to have to constantly fight with a game because some programmer didn't code it right or whatever the hell.
i know no game can ever be 100% free of technical issues, but i've never once played anything with *this* many of them.
i have no idea how it even happened or why it wasn't fixed, either. Surely they'd have fixed at least some stuff over the years, but nope. They're all still present after a decade or more.
i don't care for "endgame content" so i can't speak on it (or looter stuff in general - played the games for the writing and gameplay), but i do agree that the looter in general has always felt kind of off to me. Gear you find is either way better than what you've got or barely worth selling, and it's not very often that you find something between the two extremes.

I’m my opinion there is something they can still do after borderlands 4 that might be worth it. Simply a remaster of BL2. Improved graphics, more mechanics like sliding and grappling in BL3, could even do a new skill tree for each character like they did in BL3 but that might be pushing it

  • @ORLY911

Another thing they need to do is allow more combinations of weapon parts again, despite Borderlands 2's claims of a "bazillion" guns over its predecessor, it had less possible permutations than the first game. Not only that, Legendary parts weren't restricted to only the barrel in BL1, allowing you to have hybrid legendaries or a legendary with the benefit of a purple rarity barrel because whatever legendary you haves part is a grip or scope or something. As such Legendary's could vary a lot more in BL1 than they did in 2. So you could get really whacky versions of legendaries or the very saught after hybrids like nemesis invader or Ajax's Ogre.

I started Borderlands after all its DLC already came out so I don't know what it was like before, but I can imagine it was very stale and boring because after you complete every quest all you had was maxing out your weapon proficiency (which I wouldn't mind coming back) and hunting legendary weapons. I like the DLC's for Borderlands, but they suffer from what I just said other than the Knoxx DLC. Zombie DLC had nothing after the main story, Underdome did give you an extra action skill point, but it was so tedious and draining especially the big 25 round version (the special effects you can get, and the unique rounds were the best thing about it). Knoxx really helped the game out because we got another rarity that being pearlescents the most rare and powerful weapons in the game, the armory which could be farmed over and over even if it is using a glitch which was probably unintentional, and our first raid boss Crawmerax. Then we downgraded a little bit because Knoxx had a lot, but the Robolution DLC gave us a smaller easier to get loot room. Then we get to Borderlands 2 which I remember being so much fun. The skill trees were better, the characters had more depth, we got the Badass Rank, customizable skins and heads, and the story was just better than the first game. Then we got new DLC's and new playable characters which meant another 2 playthroughs for the game. In the DLC's we got another rarity being Seraphs and then we got new raid bosses and new currency that they dropped. At that point in time they had a limit for the raid bosses which made no sense so I'm glad they got rid of that. However, we then got more levels which meant more leveling and farming new gear which is fine because I loved that but it felt like going from 50 to 61 then from 61 to 72 and then 72 to 80 became more and more of a grind with all the characters. Then the OP levels meant you had to get new gear every two to three levels just to do it all over again. Then there are certain raid bosses that just become torture to fight aka Voracidous and Dexiduous but that is just a waiting game really. Then like you said the Grog became such a crutch that almost every build had it because enemies were just able to kill you so fast and then the scaling was bad at the higher levels. The Pre-sequel at launch was probably my least favorite because I used to hate on it so hard but changed my mind after playing through it again for the channel. The DLC really helped it out, but I still feel like there isn't much to do outside of killing the Sentinel or EOS at end game. The we get to BL3 which really improved in the gameplay dynamics but downgraded in terms of story, we went from GigaChad Jack to Tyreen the talker and Troy the Annoying. Then I also remember that every build needed perfect anoints otherwise it wouldn't work and we didn't have the board that switched anoints at the time so if you went on PC you had to farm and you could be farming for hours and still not get it even though it felt like all that ever dropped was legendaries. Then I can't say too much about Wonderlands because I did an initial playthrough for it and never picked it back up. I'm sure I'm missing a lot of things in this post especially for BL3 but If I did do that I would have to write a novel so I think I'll leave it here for now. All in all, Borderlands does need a serious change whether that be in the devs or just a new company but BL4 really really needs to be solid and responsive to its community because if it isn't....well I think we all know where that road leads.

Awesome video and great points, totally agree with you.
I got into Borderlands last year starting with 2, then going into 3, Pre-Sequel, and then Tales.
I’m in the camp of people that absolutely adore Pre-Sequel and really wish it got more time to shine when it did. That being said, as someone who also has a hundreds of hours in 3, I really cannot stand the disregard Gearbox seems to have towards the overarching lore of these games. Borderlands 3 and New Tales are games that just completely spit in the face of lore set up in previous entries to the point where I genuinely don’t even have good feelings in terms of a potential Borderlands 4. If a 4th game was made they definitely would need to address the “war” mentioned in Pre-Sequel, as well as expand upon the stuff pertaining to sirens in Nyriad’s logs.
Unfortunately, the fact that Gearbox seems to have given up on 3 entirely-given the date of the last hotfix being 2021, if I recall correctly-and the fact that I hardly hear any good things about Wonderlands makes me very uneasy for the future of this franchise in general. I wish I didn’t have such a negative opinion on all this because I truly adore this series, but I just do not trust Gearbox.

I didn’t grind the same thing for 30 hours to fit a build, so playing however I wanted felt viable, and legendary guns generally felt like a game changer and unique. a few things aside my rant
    1. as said, remove op, mayhem, chaos lvls... its not worth it, and bulletsponge enemies arent fun either. just give enemies with higher difficulty more abilities and behaviors ( give them actual shields artifacts classmods and guns that can then drop), this instantly makes them so much harder to fight without actually making them ULTRA tanky
    2. game must start with 7 rarities
pearls are 0.01% ultra rare world drops
seraphs are the best guns of the franchise ( also promote uber tier weapons to this category intsead of nerfing them to death) and maybe even have deleted elements like slag here
    3. rework skilltrees, they havent ever worked nor did they function well with the level increases, they literally said in the borderlands show this is why we get op lvls n shit
    4. on disc day 1 the game needs
    1 classic raidboss
    1 takedown
1-2 stackable raidbosses aka vermi and idk something else like a stacking bot or mothrakk or skagzilla
3 proving grounds with focused enemy themes
2 circles of slaughter with everything random endgame focused
    5. functioning eridium economy
every raidboss costs 100 eridium to farm exept ( after completing the takedown 1 time you can pay 100 to skip to the bosses)
25 eridium per stage on a stackable boss to effectivly spawn it, for vermi every time the varkid evolves you inject eridium into the sack as an example guaranteeing it will evolve again
rerolls or anything else 25 eridium FLAT no increase, and nothing more
this will permanently stabelize eridium and you can always use it for something
which will avoid the bl3/wonderlands problem where everything is too expensive cuz ppl had a bit too much after not having anything for ages, and then suddenly nobody can afford it anymore
    6. lvl cap is fixed to the account, not the character... larger inventory space / bankspace is either unlimited or 2000 or something
these fixes will instantly make the game better
    INSANTLY

All that is looter shooter features not RPG single player. Reason the chapter is titled "genre identity crisis" they don't even know what they are.

@@ItzTermxborderlands is a story game. It's the mix between the two genres. Everything they have been doing is them trying to push towards destiny. Every single mistake.

I think that loot rarity also fixates the amount of part attachments any part of the weapon can roll with so white is 0-1, green is 1-2, blue is 2-3 or something like that. IMO once you go to TVHM white should not drop and in UVHM green also is gone. Those colors should become a visual indicator of craftable materials or temporary buffs

For me, I’m hoping whatever story they do is streamlined and paced better than 3. Would be great if it’s a good story, but even if it’s bad, that could smoothed over with it being paced better.
In 3 I feel there’s too many times you just have to wait for whoever you’re interacting with to stop talking so you can play again. It really keeps me off from making new characters, which is my favorite thing to do in these games. I love leveling up new people.

OP levels were and always have been optional. The complaints about them were completely overblown. 72 OP8 was the place that the game was at.
Also seriously, RIP Gearbox Forums. I know most of the discourse around the franchise switched to other forms of social media, but it was a great place to learn about the game going all the way back to BL1. I'll never forgive Gearbox for shutting it down.

    Borderlands ? as a Live Service ?
    Like Warframe, Destiny_2, Genshin Impact, Warzone/Fortnite ?
    Dammm, that would be great
...That's why it's not gonna happen,
that would take work and effort from the Dev team. This is still Gearbox we are talking about.

MY personal Borderlands ideas (not in any specific order or such)
-Dont make an entire party disband after you save quit, instead have them stay in the party, and make it so there's a button that will disband the party automatically if you want
    -New raid bosses, like he said in the video, make each raid boss unique, and make them each have a good and cool set of abilities, and different weaknesses, quirks, and different approaches to each boss, but I also have another idea for raid bosses;
    Sub-Raid bosses (Sub-Bosses for short)
Where they could either be like weaker raid bosses, or a weaker variation of already existing raid bosses for lower level player that could help unlock certain gear and items and help prapare for actual raid bosses or help prepare for a new OP system that i'll cover shortly, anyways, they could give you gear specifically designed for countering raid bosses like making the gear have elements that a raid boss is weaker to, or could do something else, I don't know.
-New OP levels, there would be 12-15, and would be rebalanced to not be as punishing just trying to progress through end game.

Mayhem 4 was shit we went from a spot where no action skills and a handful of guns worked to every action skip op as f and buffing ridiculous guns like lob 1000%. In preperation for 2.0. People only liked it in comparison to before. But in hindsight the game had never been balanced

Borderlands has a content bloat problem. Borderlands 2 felt like a perfect sequel to 1, and had many quality of life updates. Better skill trees, story, etc.
Borderlands 3 has the best gunplay and leveling of the entire series. Other than that, it feels overstuffed. A lot of quantity over quality with map size, and design sense in general. It feels like they couldn't stop adding to the game and it only made the optimization worse.

Glad you brought up the anointments are just luneshine again; I think they could work, if we could choose which one to put on the legendary gear. Hell I was expecting b3 to let us build our own guns since they were boasting how many new combinations were possible, that's be interesting to collect parts and make our own weapons instead of constantly hocking unwanted items. Between guardian rank & badass rank I much preferred badass simply because it wasn't arbitrarily capped, but yeah I would love them to bring back the proficiencies ontop of that. It's like they keep balancing for competitive pvp when the series has always been cooperative pve.

Tbh all I need is a game with a decent story, interesting raidbosses, and a borderlands 2-like loot system. I think rarities were done the best in 2. Even though pearls were pretty bad and some weapons were much better than others, you see people using multiple different rarities in many different builds. From blue’s uniques and class mods, purple’s really good weapons(ex: ravager, quad) and utility grenades, legendaries in general, seraphs that are hard to get but can be very effective, some even use white and green weapons for stacking skills.

Its kinda funny about the memory thing, cause Borderlands the Pre-Sequel actually does have new dialog exchanges between character, between the Normal, TVHM, and UVHM playthroughs. Its not a lot, but for TVHM and UVHM, its basically just Athena retelling the story again, with new dialog exchanges cause something happened, and they got time for another retelling of the story, probably to both Athena's annoyance and begrudging acceptance, cause well...her head is on the chopping block, and anything to prolong the length of time it takes for a bullet to finally reach her skull is good yeah?

    1. Make a new loot rarity each playthrough. Have orange actually be rare in the first playthrough, but have it only kid of rare in the second. Second playthrough introduces cyan, but that is really rare. You can repeat with playthrough 3 and a new type.
    2. Make the characters feel unique, but be sure to balance them.
    3. Reduce ‘multipliers’, have them be adders. This can reduce the amount of ‘you must use this build because it has the most modifiers.
    4. Either allow every skill tree, every branch of that tree, to apply slag, or remove slag multiplications.
    5. Take the time and balance weapons correctly. Balance snipers vs pistols, balance oranges to be equivalent to other oranges, and balance the soldier using a combat rifle to the hunter using snipers. BL usually does this pretty well. Just want to make sure it’s a focus.
    6. Let there be a different tab to track repeatable missions vs story/onetime missions.
    7. At no point should it take me 15 min to kill anything at badass level or lower. (Unless I’m like using purple gear on playthrough 3, where it is my own fault)
    8. Make it so that every character has a way to kill an ‘invincible’. Make a storyline about getting the right gear and skills to fight that invincible. Giving hints along the way of what shields to avoid, what attacks are dodge able, what elements are best, what weak points exist

10:00 the main reason bl3 died, in my opinion, was cause they got nerf happy after the first few months. A lot of my friends for example quit playing cause their mains at the time got nerfed to high hell aswell as their weapons. And they never touched it again because of that. They need to reverse a lot of the nerfs they did. But that probably won’t happen
