I love it, others don’t. Believe it or not I don’t play BL3 because I think it’s writing/jokes are incredibly bad and are worse than BL2. My point being, I find it interesting that while we disagree on the overall writing quality of the main borderlands games. We still both agree handsome jack is fucking incredible. I think it just goes to show how good he is that most people, borderlands fans or not like handsome jack.

Don't get me wrong, it had flaws, big ones, but It had some of my favorite gameplay, it had some surprisingly decent characters in the cast, and (don't kill me for this) I actually did like the story.
Could've been done better, but I had fun. It did its job. It's still a fun game, but I think it just didn't measure up to what everyone came to expect.
At least we can all agree the movie was worse.

This game had the best direction and music usage out if all the telltale games. The cinematography during the intro sequence of the second episode is so fucking good. Didnt care for the ending that much but its definitely criminally underrated. The dialogue is pretty good and doesn’t feel clunky since the cast are comedically skilled actors. If you havent played it, definitely give it a try.

Good video, although it's a shame you didn't mention that the final conversation between Rhys and Fiona is mostly the player asking questions, and then answering them. You're in control of most of the questions/answers and are therefore conversing with yourself, but it is done in such a natural way that you wouldn't really notice. Brilliant game, I'm so glad it's back on Steam, hopefully we'll see a season 2 one day, one that's neither bigger nor better, but just as good.

I think a way to solve the awkward reason for why Fiona's mad at Rhys in the framing device while at the same time keeping it intact would be for Rhys to have options to tell Fiona and co about Jack... but Jack keeps thwarting his attempts. It would be a nice parallel to him thinking Fiona left him behind on Helios when she didn't really, Rhys keeps trying to tell them he has Jack in his head but he literally can't. Maybe even put some manipulation on Rhys for good measure. It would also rob the player of choice in a way that makes more sense, Jack is NOT a player character. It wouldn't make sense for him to compromise himself for the player's choice, so his intervention would just make more sense for why Fiona's reason to be mad continued to exist.

I couldn't agree more. As someone who has played through almost all of Telltale's games, I can honestly say this is one of their best work. I'm sad to hear it didn't do well financially. This could also be in part to the saturation of Telltale games after TWD. Pumping out so many games a year with very little gameplay changes between them led to player fatigue, I think. I'm glad to see they're coming back and I hope they will do much better this time around. Perhaps they could also ditch the episodic plan and release the games as a whole similar to Life is Strange 3.

What a brilliant video, can't believe it's took me 6 months to find this since I've be raving about this game since I played it in 2017. Even though I don't agree with you on a lot of your views on the other borderlands games I get where your'e coming from, and you might be glad to hear Anthony Burch will not be returning to write BL3 so there's hope that you may enjoy the writing in this one more.

Its mostly the Borderlands humor that I have an issue with. I actually think Burch is extremely talented at writing dramatic meaningful scenes (He wrote Handsome Jack's final scene in TftB) but his humor isn't my personal cup of tea. I understood that it would be a contentious opinion to slag off Borderlands as much as I did in this video and I actually kind of regret that. I don't hate Borderlands, I just wanted to make the point to those who don't enjoy Borderlands comedic style that TftB is something they could still enjoy.

I did play the Torque DLC and thought it was pretty funny though. There is some good humor sprinkled throughout.

Just found out they’re making a fucking sequel two minutes ago. I played The Wolf Among Us and Tales From The Borderlands last year. TWAU and TFTB are both getting sequels. One this year, the other next year.
    Edit:
Wait in Dying Light that WASNT Troy Baker?? I spent that whole time thinking it was.

Imagine those who waited years for season 2 of The wolf among us and tales of the borderlands. I just finished Tales from the borderlands today and also immediately searched for a season 2 because of how good and humerous it was. Glad to have seen that season 2 was confirmed for both wolf among us and tales from boardlands! Hopefully season 2 of tales will not change as due to telltale not leading development.

Just saw the gameplay and I wouldn't put it near Walking Dead or Wolf Among Us, but I really enjoyed it. It would be great if a season 2 came along, I want to see if Sasha or Fiona actually become a thing with Rhys (lots of flirting especially with the first, and very little pay off), although the main storyline does have a fulfilling closure.
Btw, the intros and OST are probably the best of all Telltale Games.

So I had played a few of telltales games, walking dead and wolf Among us, back when they were still making games, and thought they were awesome. Wasn't until recently I went and bought every one of their games, except Minecraft, and started my playthrough of each game, I've enjoyed them all immensely, but just finished Tales from the Borderlands and while playing episode two I said to myself, this has to be Telltales best game and just like you, when I heard it was being made, I thought it was the dumbest idea id ever heard, so happy I was wrong and gave it a chance.
And just like Fiona says at the end of the game " I'm sad it's over". Obviously Telltale had learned quite a bit as time went on, it really shows from the first episode of the walking dead to Tales from the Borderlands. I could only imagine what their next game would look like if they were still going. I hope they come back, even if it's a small team and take their time making a single game at a time.

Great video (And greeting from 2021)!
Seeing this and remembering this game after all this time makes me even sadder about what became of Rhys and the writing. Kinda wish the main games never touched these characters honestly, it's just...not the same, the shlooty game doesn't gel with this, and seeing the writing take a predictable nosedive because Borderlands the shloot will always rely on dumb memes instead of actual writing (And actively make the choice to CUT an important scene relating to an important character) do nothing with characters from this, and only flanderize them is...sad.
Some things are better left alone. This was the best story ever told In Borderlands history (Saying this as a dumb Borderland lore diver) and one of the best if not the best Telltale ever made.

Picked up tales from the borderla ds a few days ago as I never played it cuz i thought it was ridiculous the concept of a borderlands game that was strictly role playing and not a looter shooter really, an i have to say that im ultimately upset for never giving it a chance originaly, but im also happy that in a sense i saved the experience for later cuz ive only played to ep4 but I love it. Its got great story and its hilarious, it made me laugh more than any of the main games and i consider the bl franchise one of my favorites specifically cuz of the humour, an this amplifies it 10×. its like a borderlands movie or interactive series on netflix and its amazing I hate that there wont be any more borderlands from tale tell now tho 😢

I will actively disagree that Borderlands is incapable/hasn't told good stories/jokes.
Despite the "funny haha" memes and the "LOUD = XD" humor that it sometimes has with characters like Tiny Tina, it also has a fair amount of complex, conflicting characters. Tiny Tina (in spite of her humor which is very hit or miss) Lady Aurelia, Handsome Jack/John (2 and TPS) hell, even Claptrap, who is basically a funny haha masoct, in The Pre-Sequel is expanded and written very well. He is still goofy (though it's toned down a bit) but that forced aspect actively takes a toll on him, yet he's still forced to be optimistic, since y'know, he's a robot and so programmed to be that way.
If your only impression of Borderlands is "psycho man yells poop xD doge" or Joss Whendon writing, you probably didn't put in much effort into looking at the series (Or just played 3 or New Tales from the Borderlands) and I'd dare say the humor in Tales isn't too far at all from a lot of the humor in the old 3 games.

So a few things. This video was really enjoyable, and I do enjoy this video however I want to ask some unrelated questions. First off could you ever foresee making a discord if you ever get a large audience? Finally what sort of game reviewers and critics do you listen to and have you ever heard of MisterCaption?

    • @EldritchAugur
      @EldritchAugur  6 лет назад +1

      - I've never used Discord but I do love to talk about games so I would not be opposed to the idea if there's a demand for it.
      - Ever since I've started making videos I've actually found it harder to watch other critics with a similar style of my own because of how much I deal with it on a daily basis and I don't want to subconsciously plagiarize. Sometimes I end up writing direct lines from other videos without even realizing it. But to answer your question, I do watch Noah Caldwell-Gervais, Superbunnyhop, Joseph Anderson, Raycevick, MrBtongue when I get the chance.
-I have heard of Misercaption, I saw a few of his videos. It seems he quit because all that exists of his videos anymore is fan reuploads. I did enjoy his Fallout 4 critique, it would have been very similar to the kind of video I would have made on the game. I never saw much else of his content though.

I can't completely argue against what you said about the main series Borderlands games writing. It is very hit and miss, but there is a genuinely intriguing story that is largely in the background that you learn yourself through side quests and audio logs.
Tales From the Borderlands and The Pre-Sequel did so much heavy lifting in the narrative and they're the two games that are sadly ignored. But there is a decent story to be found across the BL1, TPS, BL2 and Tales with so much potential to be taken in future games.
Or, at least, there was until Borderlands 3's writers decided to crank the awful writing up to 11.

If you can tolerate some of the cringier family guy level jokes and the surface level noise that makes up the main borderland games, you’d be surprised to find some pretty compelling characters and story moments, especially in the 1st and 2nd borderlands (pre-sequel’s kinda weird and the less said about BL3’s writing, the better).
Tales from the borderlands basically scraps as much of those gold narrative nuggets from the main series as it could and melts/reforges it into something more pure that isn’t hidden away by shitty jokes and constant gun battles or the limitations of having playable characters being more about their kits and less about them being actual characters.

Borderlands has always been good at ludonarrative.
You're an absolute demon that grubs for new guns, new grenades, cash, and blood. You like killing people, you are not a good person, and you are above all things shallow. You like death. You like loot. You like prying things out of still tensed hands, you like hurting people.
Tales, on the other hand, is a group of manipulative losers all trying to swindle their way to victory. Lying and convincing and worming their way through conversations that they don't have the skill in combat to solve. When you see Zer0 he's fucking terrifying, a whirling dervish cutting through hordes of people as you scrounge and scamper, desperate to survive. People are bigger, larger. Even the low level bandits and psychos are nigh unsurpassable obstacles. Killing takes effort, advantage, and skullduggery. You're not heroes, you're not even combatants. You have no right to even be sat at the table with the forces that are after what you are after. To that extent, you have a *Jack* weighting your hand.
