I want to witness something like this live before I die.

What a stunning cathedral
is it only me or does anyone else think it looks like the holy figure next to the octavists is joining the ranks of the choir? what a magnificent performance and location!
It just never ceases to amaze me how two oktavists can be heard so clearly over 30-40 people. But then again Zlatopolsky could be heard solo over 50-60 so I presume the ultimate depth just helps distinguish their notes from the others.
Its really these orthodox church acoustics. I'm a regular bass who had a chance to be in one of these once. The notes that were never ever audible suddenly become the loudest note in the acoustic
I assume you meant “it never ceases to amaze you,” - but I am amazed at how I can be seized by the sound of of a perfect 5th interval sung in the bass.

I have spent at least 2hrs today watching and listening to the most Glorious Exquisite Russian Music in the Orthodox Tradition...mamny tears shed...a thank you to all...dgp concerned
Thank you.
Miller has no score, he just seems to look at the one of the guy in front of him !! What a voice though. A gift from heaven.
Its very difficult to find music that better uses all types of voices then in Russian orthodox music.
Absolutely
Literally one of the most beautiful piece’s of choral music I’ve ever heard!
"We praise Thee, we bless Thee. We give thanks unto Thee, O Lord, and we pray unto Thee, O our God." +
Merci.
Zo intens mooi....
I've sung this as a bass, and even with a normal range, it's an absolute treat.
The Bass is everything!!!
Yuri Wichniakov and Vladimir Miller in the same concert! Vladimir filled the dome of Uppsala alone!...
I wished I'd been here!
Just them two could fill the hall with their voices!...
Chesnokov, what a sad ending to a great man, at least we still have his masterpieces to soothe our souls.
The basses... just wow!
Gives you goosebumps
Lanky YEP!!! Had them almost immediately. These low notes are a super turn on lol.

Thank you God that music exists. No words for how beautiful this is to hear and the parts of our souls it can stir. 🕊
I sang in a choire in a church once. It was pure magic
These basses are just beasts.
I did not know that this meant, "we praise Thee," a section of the liturgy following the consecration. Before I knew this, I sensed it was of high significance. The beauty is magnificent!
if the catholic church had music like this, i might never leave church...
If you go to a traditional Latin mass you'll discover something just as beautiful as orthodox chant
it is indication that you leave to join orthodox church church instead (:
@@reigenlucilfer6154 not sure about that, i was born catholic and would like to leave earth as one... thanks for the suggestion anyways...

Look up this peace with Vladimir Pasyukov. It’s breathtaking
Look veraion of willow consort, masterpiece also
Vlad and Yuri are not reading music. Everyone else has manuscript.
supply troubles
Don't think so, these 2 are so at home in this music they can easily sing it from memory...
It's very common to have soloists sing from memory while the choir sings using music. Vlad and Yuri aren't really soloing but it is a piece that showcases their voices.
They are not manuscripts, they are scores.
Because they've done this piece so many times that it comes naturally to them.
thanks and God bless you for amazing singing. Holding the notes for long time is a very big challenge.
1:25 ... Wow. That's an F#1, isn't it?
Amazing performance.
yes, Oktavists do
I don't know about this note. But in general, very low notes sung by oktavists are often not written in the score. If you have such a singer you try to use it asking him to lower the notes. And often, they improvise such decisions .
That's why it can be very beautiful and impressive, as it can sometimes spoil a song that's written to be sung in tight chords, in tight voicings.
Vladimir Miller... and Glen Miller for USA ;) can do. And I do but less full-powering (-_-); A1 is my true lower note I can sing.
The composer Chesnokov distinguished 5 types of bass, and wrote down to the G1 (the G of the first full octave of your piano). These singers can sing lower (without microphone ! ).
its A1 :)
Most beautiful!
Superb. What a fantastic performance.
I got chills

Absolutely marvelous. Thank you for the upload! I do wish there were a studio quality version with this group!
As it is, I can be satisfied with Vladimir Pasyukov's recording for now. :)
i like, great
The oktavists are about 50% bigger than the other men around them which probably explains the amazing resonant sound - a beautiful piece
increíble.

On the one hand, it's sad that this church venue is only a dozen+ across, with so much white hair; on the other hand, at least in Russia one can still hear such stunning music. Where are the American choirs even offering such songs from Chesnokov? Thanks for the video.
Innefable
Ohhhh, siviliesed reaction for a mistake of mine.

what's the note Wichniakov sang at the penultimate chord?? Something like a G1 or A1??
What an amazing version!! Thank you for uploading that!!
+Gabriel Tricot Both Miller and Wichniakov are on A1 at that point.

I thought you might be interested to hear that the St. Petersburg Chamber Choir's rendition of this song was used at the start of a song by Bones, an American rapper: ruclips.net/video/Iz8-HRglVUo/видео.html
A friend of mine sent it to me just recently and I could scarcely believe that I was hearing "Tebe Poem" in the context of a rap song...
+EpsilonDEA Wow. I don't know what to say. Thanks for letting me know! It is a nice little tune for that genre. :)
I've also heard Pasyukov's exclamation from Chesnokov used in this way by Death Metal bands.

What church are they singing in? It was beautiful as the music.
Wichniakov means cherrishmade
HI K Barber, do you have an idea how to find out when Miller is performing in Russia? Ive been scouring the web, but cant seem to find which choir he currently sings with... The St.Petersburg capella seems to be the one, but they dont mention him, or show pictures. His own website unfortunately shows no tour dates. any help would be appreciated!
+Mike Stamm I'd keep a close eye on the Capella of St Petersburg and Basso Profundo Trio tour dates. I don't see any dates for the trio, but the Capella has a few here: vk.com/idcapella_spb
Unfortunately, they don't always perform repertoire that highlights him, but they often do.
+k barber
Thank you for the tip on vk.com, much appreciated. Im in St.P on business at least once a year, so ill try to coordinate accordingly :)
Pasyukov still the best
Is the date of the performance correct? 04/30/2015? I didn't realize Wichniakov was still performing
+Penny Mcwilliams Yes, he's still performing, mostly in Moscow. You can see him in many performances with moscow-based ensemble "The Grand Choir." Unfortunately, they perform mostly with an orchestra, and rarely sing anything that utilizes low bass.
I must search for him more thouroughly
Penny Mcwilliams It's difficult, since most of the time he's one face in a crowd and they generally don't credit oktavists separately!
The Octaviats don’t need the music
the one person to push RECORD at the start of the performance... like you couldn't record a few minutes before lol. DING...

Long live Holy Russia.
The woman in 1:36. Captain?
so beautiful
What are the lyrics to this?
Anyone that can hit an A1 , G1 is considered as an oktavist and a basso profundo ???
No, many people can produce these notes. The question is the quality of the notes--how much volume? How much resonance? Etc.
The Oktavism Channel how can one tell if they qualify as an oktavist?
Holy Russia the light of the world
It's hard to tell, but has Wichniakov lost some of his power, or is it just the recording? It seems in other videos I've seen of him, the A1 would be much more prominent, especially with a 2nd oktavist performing alongside him.
+Ben I doubt he's lost power, though that's possible. There are several differences.
1. The most important variable is how loud he is supposed to sing. This portion is marked pianissimo in the score, so it is supposed to be quiet. Although we fans would like oktavists to always blast the lows as loudly as possible, the composer and director are more concerned with the overall effect of the music.
2. The Orthodox Singers was a smaller choir--only 14 people in many videos I've seen. Here we have around 60 singers. On the Orthodox Singers disc, "Basso Profundo from Old Russia," we like to give Yuri all the credit, but he had 2 more profundi backing him up, Viktor Krutchenkov, and Boris Tchepikov, even on tracks for soloist like "Do Not Reject." So 3 profundi in a 14 person choir is a huge difference than only 2 in a 60 person choir.
+k barber that makes sense, but the last D in the piece is louder than the low A, which usually doesn't make sense at the end of a piece like this. Is that written in the score? Or, better yet, is there a link I could use? ☺
Ben It's not written in the score, but of course a contra A is a difficult note. Very few oktavists are capable of singing it at all. I've never heard a performance of this piece where the volume didn't go up on the last D. St. Petersburg Chamber Choir, and other performances all do the same, so it's a common interpretation. The score can be seen here:
ruclips.net/video/g8CpbSxBC_Q/видео.html
+k barber Aside from the St Petersburg rendition, could you point me to any others? Thanks!
Ben There are a few live ones on my channel. It is almost never performed because it is so demanding for the basses.
