    There are things you want to have just because you love them. You may not even play the Rhodes piano very often, but the fact that you have it at home makes you happier. Well, it's all about me.

      Technically this would play like a keyboard, which is not as difficult to learn as a full on piano.
      If you bought one (or any other electric keyboard) you could be playing familiar songs withing a few days. With that being said, the real beauty of this instrument is the ability for improvisation and that takes a lot more practice and playing to become proficient with the technique.

    Terrific hour+ of video.. thanks... but you've given me a very big problem... I bought my Stage 73 Mk1 new in 1977... there was no discussion in those days, it was either the Wurli of the FR and I took my Rhodes everywhere.... now I'm in my mid 70s, and over the years I've accumulated many keyboards with 'Rhodes' sounds... sorry, I should say 'with what I thought were Rhodes sounds' My instrument has been packed away for years, I just can't transport it to sessions when my Roland or Yamaha weighs about 10kg against the 60 or so kilos of the FR, but there is a BIG difference... just listening to your demos has brought back so many memories of sounds and nuances which just can't be emulated electronically or sampled... so my problem is that I am recording now and have one song which has to have EP sounds.... and I was going to use my trusty Yamaha.... but I think I'll get a couple of friends in to help me get the FR to the studio... Thank you for reminding me of the treasure that will get resurrected soon!!!!

      +Free Breeze ...hey Free Breeze, an update, I did use the FR for 2 tracks on our new album, with great success... tuned it all up beforehand... it's a delight... all I want now to complete the studio is a B3... I don't think my dear wife would go for that!

    The great thing about the Rhodes was that - possibly for the first time - it allowed a piano player to 'join the band' with an instrument that at the very least replicated the touch, dynamic and sustain features of a real piano. As a bonus, that instrument happened to have a 'voice' all its own which - depending on how you used it - was capable of covering everything from explosive jazz (Tom Scott) to smooth balladry (10cc) and so much in between.

    The sound of a chorus-effect Rhodes is one of the most beautiful piano sounds, to me. It was used a lot in ballads in the 1980's and late 70's, and I think it fits very well in those. It make ballads even more expressive and poignant, if that makes any sense. Some good examples that come to mind are "Think of Laura" by Christopher Cross, "Crazy" and "What About Me" by Kenny Rogers, and there are several others I know of but can't think of right now!

    • @rsdigiomoney
      @rsdigiomoney 8 месяцев назад

      In the 70’s, yes. But in the 80’s ballads it was more likely to be a Yamaha dx7 with the “e. Piano 1” preset. Very common at that time. Also sounds very similar to a real Rhodes

    • @EphemeralProductions
      @EphemeralProductions 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@rsdigiomoney 1980-1985 used a real chorus effect Rhodes quite often in many songs. I somehow can tell the difference between the DX7 and the Rhodes, the difference is very distinctive.

    Thank you very much for such a comprehensive introduction to this beautiful instrument. Last year I could watch show of James Leg (in Hannover) and as the drummer of a rock-/blues oriented band my eyes grew big not only becauase of his drummer. Never had I thought about producing such a sound with an "electric piano"!! When he took off the cover during a song two times to fix something with the tonebars the drummer just pulled through (two times!). I'd like to share some footage (from my cloud drive) but may not here in the comments?
    Right now the non-keyboarding members of our band are looking at the Roland FA06 of our (sic!) keyboarder and we're constantly dreaming of that vintage sound with the smell of the 70ies (in all it's variations, as you showed in an impressive way). Your intro will be a good starting point for our slightly delicate discussion about sounds and how to produce them. Thanks for that and thanks for using a whiteboard instead of fancy-blinking whoo-dosh-effects. And for providing profound information instead of show.
    Rock on, all the best! Jörn from 'Odd Men Out', Celle/Germany
