TBO there are some dynamics subtleties that even the best computer samples may never be able to fully recreate, so for the sake of nitpicking 1st prize has to go to the actual Rhodes piano. But if you listen without looking at the video you realize all three examples sound killer in their own way. Its also a credit to the skill of the person playing the instrument...much respect to you sir.
It is amazing how different sounds will change the player's attitude. Neo Soul for software but nothing replaces the tines, tone bars and pickups. The lower end could have the pickups a little closer but what a beautiful sound. Mark ii is probably my favorite Rhodes. Can't beat the real thing.
Wow! What a breath of fresh air when you dragged out that Rhodes Mk II. It's like a veil had been lifted off the sound. It had life and depth of a real instrument rather than a controller triggering the playback of samples. Some were better than others, some had more character or grit but none came close to the real deal!
The original is the outlier. It just has such a soft, rounded sound! It's also more quiet (especially in those lows) with less bite, which I like. I like a soothing Rhodes. Good video!
I agree. Maybe (and I kind of doubt this as well) a dedicated musician might detect some tiny difference between the real thing and the patches but there's no way that a consumer listening even on high end equipment is going to notice any difference especially in the mix.
Perfect Pitch person here. I can tell that Nord lacks the dirt and some of the buttery legato that the original has but that is also due to the key bed and other factors such as his playing
The Rhodes had more dynamics, but that also depends on the player. Ultimately, I don't think either one would disappoint or matter given the fact that the guy playing is awesome. And because the Nord is easier to maintain, lighter and more versatile, I would personally stick with the Nord. Now, I have to ask myself, why am I still holding on to my Stage 73?
ihr habt eine wirklich geschmeidige Stimmung. Hervorragendes Video. Keep on keepin on. Thx 4 posting
wow, awesome comparison and lovely tune. I'm impressed that software has come such a long way. I used to own a Rhodes 73 Mark 1, but sadly had to sell it when I moved overseas and even though that thing came in a flight case, it wasn't flying anywhere anytime soon. Imho the Rhodes in your test overall has the most interesting sound (nobody else achieves the layered sounds including the bells and the attack variations), but the differences are almost negligible. One glaring difference however is the weak bass notes on the rhodes and totally remember that from mine. For the bass to cut through you'd have to crank the volume up so high that the rest of the notes ring way too loud. I'm sure there is a compressor equalizer jingamagic for that out there, but then you might as well go digital.
First of all, great playing by the whole band! In general I found the sound of the plug-in to be nice and quite close to each-other, with only the Nord seeming to be a bit different sounding (a bit thinner, brighter, and the least "real" sounding) From this demo (apart from the real one, obviously), I liked the Neo Soul keys the best. To me it had the most character. Like in the intro bass-notes, where you could hear the "mechanism" of the Rhodes piano at key release (like on the real one). This I didn't hear in the other ones. Also it had a little more "bell sound" like the real one has. It was however a bit compressed sounding compared to the real Rhodes. The RSP I felt sounded a little dull, particularly in the upper regions. All though it did seem a bit more dynamic than the Neo Soul. Second best I liked the Scarbee Rhodes. Seemed like the most dynamic from the plug-ins. All together the real Rhodes was obviously the best sounding.
And so..7 years later. For sure we love Fender Rhodes and it's the original sound., Basically it has less bass. But, first we love the groove, of course
Thanks for all the nice comments! There will be another comparison with a lot of other plugins soon. It's planed to add the following samples: Software: GSI - Mr. Ray (Freeware) XLN - Addictive Keys AAS - Lounge Lizard UVI - Tines Anthology Premier Sound Factory - MK-1 RedTape - Eighty Eight Precision Sound - Dusty Electric Sampletekk - Tubed Keys Purgatory Creek - Mark V Hardware: Korg Kronos Yamaha CP series Korg SV 1 If you have something else in mind, please let me know! Thanks, Chris
This is by far the best comparison videos series ever. Plus the music is so good ! How about testing the kurzweil series ? Like Forte or pc3k. The rhodes sound are killers to...
It's not surprising that none of the samples produced the bell-like tones of the original. The bark was there but that alone doesn't make the Rhodes sound. Commend Rhodes Service Berlin for this fantastic video shootout

Thank you for the english subtitles. In a scale from 1 to 10 if whether i understand german or not my score i nein
The Rhodes seemed to lack a little bass crunch although the classic tinkling sound was there in the mid range but the vintage keys and the neo soul keys won it for me although they were all superb really and really great playing by all musicians 👍
Around 1:05 time stamp, he states that the EQ cuts the Rhodes Bass. From what I hear too much bass is a problem in most mixes. However the deeper the bass the deeper the feeling. It adds warms to the the sound. Best to turn up the hassle during solos or lone playing.
Original is original. The lower and mid register was far superior at 73's, richer and deeper, harmony was recognisable... Good test and playing....Bravo
Chris and everybody else-- I've recently added the Soniccouture EP73 to my list of Rhodes pluggins- It is now pretty much my favorite, for a couple of reasons. But mostly because not only does it give you the extremely well sampled and detailed tines sound, but to this they added a contact mic samples and ALSO an overhead mic set of samples. Frankly, nothing else comes close to this Soniccouture offering in terms of flexibility, creativity, and realism. It can be tweaked in any way that one would ever imagine. This should absolutely be used in the next series of comparisions, and I would predict it will be the runaway favorite. Soniccouture makes an equally impressive Wurlitzer sample set with the same flexibility. EP73 is 11 stars, just spectacular. No, I haven't been paid for this review. I also like to stack the EP73 with something like the Native Instruments Scarbee Rhodes, which is my second favorite. I use the EP 73 for the hard to get realism of a real Rhodes, and the Scarbee rounds out the sound nicely. Between these two, I just can't imagine you would get a better sound with any real instrument in a recording situation. Thanks Neil www.Neilslade.com
+Neil Slade Thanks for your comment! We just listened to the rhodes of Soniccouture... the demos sound great. We will have a closer look at this. Thanks!
Hello, Well done guys, that's so groovy that I listen it again and again not to compare keyboards but just to listen and reproduce the piece ! Specialy the bassline. Is that an original song if not who is the composer ?
The real one is alive. With the first wide chord stab the verb lights up like a sprak and fades as someone blowing a candle. Every tone hits the spot and the expression is all there. All the fakes sound like they have the a sauce over it. Also slow attack, slow damping, weird distortion and the overal sound is kind of dead. But he's playing with more expression on the real one because the feedback is great. And without an amp. Riders on the storm is done the same. Good verb and loads of space in the music is what it really needs.
Another couple of observations- The "R.S.P." plugin was simply the name give to the SCARBEE plugin many years ago. It is no longer available under that name. They changed the name to "C.E.P." (classic electric piano), which I bought and own. These days, Scarbee makes this plugin available via Native Instruments under the Vintage Keyboards package, thus now "Scarbee Vintage Keys". AND when you load up the Scarbee MK 1 (Rhodes) sounds, guess what? The wav file names are called "RSP". Now, that having been said, I listened carefully to the isolated files- and I think these fellows hiccuped badly (and goofed) when they said, "We like RSP best", because five seconds listening to the isolated Sound Cloud files immediately make it clear that the "RSP" plugin (what they call it) is quite awful- it has a bad click to it, and is completely missing the bell-tones inherent to the Rhodes original and the later Scarbee Vintage Keys. Not sure what happened there, but it is clearly not a good sound, and quite obvious listening to the isolated tracks. This evening I also tried the Purgatory Creek plugin, and alas, some funny ringing on the low end but by god, it's FREE. Maybe you can tweak that out- but I couldn't figure out how. When you listen to the real Rhodes, lots of extra noise there that I don't care for, TOO much of that high end chimy stuff particularly noticeable on the low end section (right after the chords at the beginning)- extra-curricular noise that comes AFTER the actual note. On the Scarbee MK 1, you can adjust the chimyness by rolling off a little 5k, and get it exactly how you like, sometimes more sometimes less depending on where you're using it. I would agree that the Neo Soul to also be quite good as well, it's a good toss up there. Finally, I'm not surprised the last comment was "Nothing beats the original", because this test was by the BERLIN RHODES SERVICE. Well, duh. For my money, I"m sticking to my Yamaha S08 with Scarbee Vintage Keys- using the built-in S08 Natural Rhodes/or Scarbee when I feel like making all the connections. But, it's a wide world out there, to each his own. :-)
I would say the Neo Soul MKI is the cloest thing we've had to the R.S.P in a long time. I have been using R.S.P for a decade, but I'm tempted to get Neo Soul after watching this and some other reviews. Can never have too many options! I used to use a Nord Electro 2 so I wouldn't have to take my '73 Mark I to gigs, but I ended up taking both every time because the Nord just can't compete with proper sampled versions, although the modeling is still very good for what it is. I think it would be hard for a consumer to pick the differences here in a blindfolded study, EXCEPT for the Nord. I think it stands out by a long margain as a different sound - not so much a bad one; it sits really well in mixes, trust me - but not true to the original.
The others are good, great for those gigging. The actual Rhodes is unmistakable every time. All the slight nuances, hammer/damper sounds will be ever so slightly different every time you play. Gorgeous peice :-)
All the softwares and Nord sounds pretty good. I would use any of them for any kind of show/recording as a semi-professional musician. But real Rhodes Mark II really stood out.
Great recording! I like the RSP the least, the Rhodes the best (save for the tone bar artifacts in the bottom octave, and the Nord 2nd best. You did a nice job voicing the Rhodes.
You've got to listen to the Sound Cloud w/o backing to really tell what is the difference. Then you can hear the Scarbee harmonics, and how different it is.
In truth, the most real feature of the Mk II (the mechanical sounds of the hammers moving in the low end) is the same thing which (shamefully or not) makes me glad to only be using samples today. The sound of the tines played back from the sample memory is more than satisfying for me. There could come a time when I change my mind, and may I have the funds to purchase and maintain anoyRhodes piano.
Guys, it's great video, tnx a lot! In deal, it is the popular kind of discution (or even battle!): which synth "does" Rhodes piano better? You've answered! The Rhodes piano itself do it best!
Would like to hear/see/read the creators opinion on the market today, nine years later. Didn't happend much. Rhodes itself brought out the V8 as real instrument and as a plugin but both do not sound as special as the original Mark One in my opinion. Then there is Keyscape (too clean and polished IMHO) and some others came too. I still have to admit that the real thing is missing and I AM SURE it is possible to make. Even if it is hard to capture the bark and the resonating of a MARK ONE I know, but IT IS possible with complex layering and a smart engine reacting on the the narrow and wide chord effects a real Rhodes has. Funny enough: the complexity of a real Rhodes sound we try to reproduce nowadays wasn't intentional 🙂it was just the limited result in the time of the making.
Wow! The groove ... :-P Your brilliant playing would probably sound good on any instrument. I forgot to listen to the actual tone of the keyboards. Ha, ha ...
hey chris, I'm pretty sure it was you. I remember seeing a test video that you (i think it was you) were going through the features and sounds of a rhodes (or something similar to it) and i was looking for that video. at one point you dropped into this SUPER funky little bit, so i wanted to find it and please my ears. Do you have your own channel where you have uploaded videos?
I went to the comparison Sound Cloud page, and I have to say I like the Scarbee best. It seems to have all of the harmonics- especially high up, the bell tones- missing from the other samples. I am surprised you like the RSP better.
If you’ve got the Rhodes in the studio and a tech to keep it dialed in that’s the ticket. If you play live and don’t have a tech to dial it in and keep it tuned up than there are many alternatives to choose from. Currently from a hardware perspective the Rhodes on the latest Korg Kronos is excellent. The motif Rhodes sounds also are stellar. Keyscape, neo soul keys and scarbee all sound great as software alternatives. Hey chic corea, George duke, Jeff Lorber, stevie wonder all play the Yamaha motif Rhodes sounds. The keyboard is reliable has a great sound engine and the action is responsive. Get on a gig and break a tine or have it be out of tune from moving it. Like I said a Rhodes dialed in in the studio is the one but live... no so much.
Hi! Your video is really amazing. Congratulation!! The best for me is the real one (mark2) but the Mark V emulation is very nice too. Could you please give us the Chords/Changes of your little musical sample?
Great job, I noticed your bass player is using Grado Headphones nice! I have the SR225 great cans for the price. Do you like Scarbee Stuff better than Lounge Lizard? I need a Clavinet but I will go for the whole package if the EPs are better than Lounge Lizard. Thank you, Dave
Danke vorab.
Nice sound ! great playing Can you please suggest any lesson books (or DVDs or youtube videos) for someone who wants to learn to play this style groove on Rhodes and e piano
I could listen to a fender rhodes for the rest of my life and be content.
Crossroads Reviews *happy
The beginning its exactly the same chord progression as Canned Heat from Jamiroquai. Great track by the way!

You guys are awesome! All of you! My preference is the real Fender Rhodes.
The original is the outlier. It just has such a soft, rounded sound! It's also more quiet (especially in those lows) with less bite, which I like. I like a soothing Rhodes. Good video!
I came here to hear the Rhodes, but those drums are mic'ed so very good for recording. Everything sounds excellent and incredibly clean. Right On!
If you closed your eyes I guarantee you wouldnt be able to tell the difference, but because you see that beautiful 73 you say...thats the one
I agree. Maybe (and I kind of doubt this as well) a dedicated musician might detect some tiny difference between the real thing and the patches but there's no way that a consumer listening even on high end equipment is going to notice any difference especially in the mix.
Brad James no it's the only one that really stood out

the 3 blackest german dudes on the face of the earth

Yes ! but they are 4 not 3...i know all white look alike XD

Nothing sounds like that Rhodes Mark II… ☮🔥
Rhodes Mark I does
You're right... Rhodes is better even if other keyboards have good sounds !
Thanks for all the nice comments!

Premier Sound Factory - MK-1
RedTape - Eighty Eight
Precision Sound - Dusty Electric

the rhodes is unbeatable. the very first, great, beautiful. impressive, sensitive, round sound.
I came for the comparison and stayed for the music (Groovy). The production is spot on too (Nice). Welcome to Jazz club.
1:24 the intro « canned heat » from Jamiroquai ;)
The Rhodes seemed to lack a little bass crunch although the classic tinkling sound was there in the mid range but the vintage keys and the neo soul keys won it for me although they were all superb really and really great playing by all musicians 👍
Around 1:05 time stamp, he states that the EQ cuts the Rhodes Bass. From what I hear too much bass is a problem in most mixes. However the deeper the bass the deeper the feeling. It adds warms to the the sound. Best to turn up the hassle during solos or lone playing.
What kind of master keyboard is that? A custom piece? Very beautiful indeed...
This has become one of my favorite soul pieces. Thank you!
Dang! Great Feel!!! I could listen to you all play forever.
Great video, and thanks so much for making the backing track available!
Super! Thanks for video. Very helpful.
Original is original. The lower and mid register was far superior at 73's, richer and deeper, harmony was recognisable... Good test and playing....Bravo
What camera is that?
all mixed tracks sound's amazing mates! thanks for great piece of music!
wonderful music!
Cooler Sound!!!
Chris and everybody else-- I've recently added the Soniccouture EP73 to my list of Rhodes pluggins- It is now pretty much my favorite, for a couple of reasons. Hallo Christian! Super Video zum Vergleich der verschiedenen E-Piano-Sounds. Chapeau!
Great musicians. Excellent recording. Well done
Awesome video! Sound music and video! ! Qualité allemande! Very good job I subscribe
Back to '83 baby! Cool.
boah wie geil....bitte mehr
Of all the plugins the RSP was my choice, too. Great job with the comparison! ;)
excelent video man! I really liked vintage keys! and that's a very sweet song as well.
The others are good, great for those gigging. The actual Rhodes is unmistakable every time. All the slight nuances, hammer/damper sounds will be ever so slightly different every time you play. Gorgeous peice :-)
The Rhodes is Buttery Smooth.
Sounds to me more bright the Fender Rhodes...This is a classic !
Such a nice groove!
Now that is instrumental science :D
Wow. Fantastic playing all around and what. a great mix. What kind of drums are those, and specifically what is that snare drum? Beautiful drum tone!!
You've got to listen to the Sound Cloud w/o backing to really tell what is the difference. Then you can hear the Scarbee harmonics, and how different it is.
What are the chords and the scales you use ? Thanks
Absolutuely wonderful job,my men!!
Super Vergleich.
Please answer who or how did you make that vintage case? Is there a special designer?
hi Cristian,
what model of master keyboard is that?
thanks
Federico
I WANNA KNOW TWO!!! With the case it gives a vintage feel. Help us plz.
He tells it at the start of the video.
Yamaha P-80 inside a case, as he mentioned
Guys, it's great video, tnx a lot! In deal, it is the popular kind of discution (or even battle!): which synth "does" Rhodes piano better? You've answered! The Rhodes piano itself do it best!

Hi Crille, sehr cooles Video und echt gute Sounds 👍
Wow! The groove ... :-P
Your brilliant playing would probably sound good on any instrument.
I forgot to listen to the actual tone of the keyboards. Ha, ha ...
hey chris,

thanks for great acoustic guitar backing track!
Very good work and my congratulations !!!
Yeah,the real thing kicks hard!
Really Nice job!
Congrats!
Rhodes Service Berlin has the action!
Lieber Christian,
Man! This is so sweet. Great playing
Why did you use the mark V sample on the nord to compare it to a mark. II? Why didn't you use the mark II sample?
Hi Joseph!
Because we thought, that the Mark V Sample fits more into the mix.
BEAUTIFUL ! can I use one of the segment in a video for my Kickstarter presentation video, it would fit perfectly. Thanks
Any comparison should be done with a fully restored Rhodes by an experienced tech. This mk2 sounds pretty good.
nice sounds!!
greetings from Uruguay
Herrlich!!! Keep it up man!
5:23 nice solo!
Nice sound ! great playing
Can you please suggest any lesson books (or DVDs or youtube videos) for someone who wants to learn to play this style groove on Rhodes and e piano
Bravo Christian !!! 👏👏👏
The real Rhodes is singing ! That's all
Really great video
Great sounds!
solid work! klasse!
Your brilliant playing would probably sound good on any instrument.
there's nothing like the real thing. Not even close...
