I'd like to say, you did a great review. This has been a great tool in leering how to use this. I just recently grabbed one, and this has been extremely helpful. Well thought out and executed in such a way it has driven me to use this in so many different ways I probably would not have, if I had not seen this video. Bravo... 8 years later, and it's still helping people!
Extremely well thought out and executed video- thank you for taking the and effort to provide the (often disrespectful, ungrateful smarmy) viewer. Especially appreciate the time stamped table of contents. As a long time RE20 owner/user, I definitely learned there's A LOT more under the hood than I had patience to harness. I've used your great reference resource quite often, like today for example, as I finally brought home s proper expression pedal. ONE COMPLAINT: I'm greedy for MORE VIDEO DEMOS!!! Like say, an identical treatment for the DD-20. Great job thank you again, and please put up some more content... SOON!
Everybody gets this wrong: The Treble and Bass knob do NOT affect the Reverb, but the Delay only! That’s what can be heard easily and that’s what the manual says!
Nice for Reggae. I use this with my keyboard set up to mash up the dancehall in a dub style. I've also used it with melodica to recreate the Augustus Pablo sound, & to spice up the drums.
Wow! Thank you for actually crafting some cogent and in-depth content about this incredibly rich pedal. 90% of what passes for review/ demo ""content" on the inter-webs is basically either a commercial or shameless and transparent self-promotion.
You seem to have missed that the expression pedal does not control echo volume but rather a different parameter called "echo level" (and that, according to the manual, this parameter can only be controlled using an expression pedal). I was hoping to learn exactly what it does, but I'm afraid I'll have to buy an RE-20 now ;-)
Thanks. This is a great starting point. I'm already able to create the first dub effect I was looking for and before I watched your tutorial I was floundering.
@@quotidianabstraction were you able to figure it out? I really think it’s best to just twist knobs until you figure out what they all do. There’s o my three knobs for the delay really so it wouldn’t be that hard
Thanks for this very good review sir! I particularly was interested in the functionality of the direct on/off switch on the back panel… which I now know that when 'off' is selected, only the 'wet' signal is sent out… which makes this unit good for inserting effects in the mixing process…sounds great on anything, not only guitar!
You skipped setting 1 and only discovered you were 1 setting ahead when reaching number 4. So the first 5 minutes of demoing and comments don't really make much sense...
oml ive been obsessed with this pedal for months and I keep watching videos cause Im tryna get some basic pedals before I buy something like this first.
Ahhhh no way, I hope that works even with tapped in delay times. Dude you are a legend! I want to use my exp pedal for the delay volume and now I can still get the feedback to run away without changing the pitch.
Great video. How do you select the expression pedal parameters if you are using batteries in the pedal? Will unplugging the input cord set the function of the pedal to be "expressed"?
Hey there, well done review, thx! I'm searching for a Delay/reverb/flanger Sound for my acoustic guitar - u think this will work? Or any other ideas? I think of this one, Or a mix of The electro harmonix analog pedals holy grail and Memory toy...thank u
um its a bit to expensive but i get this pedals deliverance by adding a lot of pedals get same effect from a booster and particle reverb , swell gain and mix and the 35£ cheapest tape echo pedal out there and a pedal pitch with bend what dose it deliver Gilmour sound pink Floyd as well as dub music mine however has space atmosphere that swells around your leads and your leads echo off the swells in harmony as for the boss tape delay good for reverb again a one trick poney it offers one type of many many reverbs for the price common you can do it its expected at that price
I do like this pedal and I'm probably going to get 1 soon.....but I don't know why they couldn't have made it so that the extended modes are more easily available instead of making it with what I'd call hidden menu modes, like taking the power lead out, turning the knob to a number, then powering back up while holding the tap tempo pedal down. It's a bit of a faff and not really straightforward in my opinion. There's not even an on/off switch so I don't think that keeping on taking the power lead in and out so many times is good for the longevity of the pedal. Saying that, I really like the sound of the echo on this so I'm still probably going to buy it. I just don't think I'm going to be using those hidden menu settings at all. Nice thorough review mate 👍
They did that really annoying thing having a reverb inside a delay pedal that has no switch. Most guitarists/musicians would have a reverb on for the whole of a song, and then switch delay on in certain places. Not completely dry, and then switch on delay AND reverb at the same time. Why not have a setting where the reverb can be left on constantly (even in "bypass"), and then you can add delay in places?
If you are using a mixer, you could send a copy of the dry sound to the pedal, and bring back the fully "wet" delay to another channel. This would allow you to apply EQ, compression or other effects to the delayed signal without affecting the dry. Another application would be a wet-dry-wet stereo rig; send dry to the central amp/speaker and the L/R delay to the left and right speakers.
XC3N would you use a preamp for any pedal? and before or after the pedal? I just use an xlr to jack cable but I don't think I'm experienced enough to know if it sounds right
Tom Phillips I think he means you need a vocal preamp going into it. And possibly feeding into a vocal preamp, in order to keep an XLR cable going into your recording interface. Personally I don’t see why you couldn’t run a microphone with a 1/4” jack into it, then out to a mic preamp.
I use the MXR brick with my pedals. I put this one on a send into my mixer that returns to its own channel so I can create feedback loops with it like they used to use the old space echo back in the day!
No, that’s not what the manual says. According to the manual there a 3 springs in a Z arrangement inside the RE-201. The RE-20 emulates the spring reverb and the tape heads of the RE-201 with Roland’s COSM technology
@@stevenvandemsky7290 Okay, I understand better, thank you. And I managed to get a Boss RV-6 since, and I am totally satisfied, I'm using it always on with the +delay mode
this is a reverb pedal? or is a delay? i like the crazy shit with the repeat knob but i'm looking for a reverb. digitech polara reverb or this Re-20. i dont know what to choose.
this isn't a reverb, reverb is present in the pedal but its such a small part. getting this just for reverb would be like buying a Ferrari just get groceries once a week. a little overkill.
I know how late I am lol. I just got this pedal today. My favorite reverb is the holy grail. Very versatile and awesome. I'm sure you've made a selection by now but the grail is still worth looking at
Here is what must be an idiotic question to many..... is it possible to set the tap tempo on this (or any other delay pedal for that matter!) whilst the delay is not turned on? I'd like to be able to tap the tempo on stage with the drummer, then engage the delay (at the tapped tempo) at specific points in the song.....
A question on RE-20: I'm using it as AUX effect. When I choose one of delay+reverb setting, only the original sound is with reverb, delays are "dry" without reverb. This is very confusing, as I would expect delays also to be with reverb - what is the point of delay+reverb if only first sound is with reverb. Does anyone has the same? Does it depend on any setting? Is it related to year RE-20 was made?
I think the original space echo was an echo section and a spring section, where you could blend them together. The reverb would not be affected by the echo and the echo not affected by the spring. Imagine a mixing desk with one echo bus and one reverb bus. The Re 20 is copy of that unit, so it has all the quirks as well, including the "spongy" sounding spring reverb. I'm not 100% I'm correct here, but my unit has the same "issue". Hope this helps a bit.
No problem, mate. It sounds like your unit works as it should. I think the reverb is there just to add another dimension to the echo, and since it is possible to achieve reverb like sounds with only delay, it makes perfect sense to combine the two.
message a bit late but thanks xc I use mine with a roland tr8 and a roland tr909 drum machine after that bought a ehx cathedral reverb unit both work well
when I use it direct, I avoid using the ON/OFF part of the pedal (the left one) because since it`s not a true bypass it fucks up the volume. I just use an ext expression pedal and map the dry/wet (or volume input, can't remember what it's called) and then the volume behaves properly. Otherwise I use it as a send, depending on the setup. Hope that helps!
The stupid thing with this pedal is that you have to turn it off to change the so many thing, making it pratically impossible to use on a live show.. Despite this I really think Im gonna get this smiling pedal. Great review btw!
It's got a long way to go to sound like the original. You have echo volume cranked and you can barely hear the echo. It should be burying the input signal
+Larry Bisson I suspect it is because on this demo the input volume is not set high enough (and the correct amount will vary according to your guitar volume (i.e. guitar volume knob and pickups). I have this pedal and I used to use a Roland 301 back in the day and with both the pedal and the Roland there is no problem at all with having the input volume set high and the little red LED flickering on and off all the time.
I suspect the lack of effect signal may be due to his use of stereo amps. One amp is getting a full dry signal and the second amp is producing the effect. This effectively cuts the echo volume (or effect level) in half. I own (and live by) this peddle. With the effect volume opened up, you can really lose yourself in the delay. It can overwhelm your input signal if you're into it.
He has an expression pedal plugged in controlling the repeats. I owned an RE-201 back in the day, and have an RE-20 on my current board. It's not PERFECT, but it's a very good approximation of the 201.... and a WHOLE lot easier to gig with!
Great for live stuff but I was sad to see they went the "clean and sterile" BBD route, unlike the EP-3 clone MXR did that allowed for dirt, wear and grit (which sounds killer in the studio).
