We need an update with all The Smile techniques
I second this
I third this.
Fourth this
I dotted fifth this
Yes! Flat six that
Finally someone that explains the delay effect in Present Tense clearly, now I can finally record an instrumental cover.
This was amazing btw, you should do more of these
Best vocabulary on RUclips 🏅
Another interesting way he uses a delay is on bodysnatcher using the slap of delay as rhythmic percussive sound...
Hi @JoeHedelmann thank you for all the informative videos you make about my also favorite band. For once i noticed a mistake in one of your videos. A dotted 1/8 note = 3 x 1/16 note or a 1/8 note and a half, not a 1/4 note and a half. I only specify this to help readers of the comments of this video understand exactly what they’re doing if they choose to apply your advices. Again thank you very much for the generosity and accuracy of your videos that i really appreciate.
Fog upon L.A. yep, I misspoke, thanks for the correction!
He doesn’t care, unfortunately. God forbid he would make an edit to the video. or at least some kind of text to make people actually aware of what they’re doing.. no. This guy and Muffy Floflo are just the worst I’m not gonna lie. Like dudes, if it was your music that you wrote, I would understand why you’re being so vague about what you’re explaining and you’re obviously capable of pulling off because of your ridiculous catalog of videos you have on RUclips, but this isn’t your music man. You’re trying to act like you’re helping people but at the same time you’re being a poser acting mysterious like you figured out some crazy formula.. Congratulations you know subjective synthesis. Maybe try helping people instead of showing off with your buddies .
And for the love of God, please stop singing Thom’s vocals. I’m sorry, man. I appreciate what you do, but this is kind of weird what you have going on here. Like you’re trying to help people, but you’re really not at all. I know all this stuff and you make it so much more confusing. Especially when you do synthesizer stuff and you use your Rev 2.. is that really necessary for everything in its right place? Come on, dude. You’re telling people to add slap and subs for one of the most beautiful most simplistic patches ever. Why would you do that? Because you liked the live version? That’s what bothers me. The most is you have so much knowledge obviously and you could help a lot of people, but what percent of anyone do you think you’re helping? Synth players? Some noob with a MicroKorg? You’re gonna confuse the heck out of them and make them think that they don’t get it. I hope you understand that you could literally be discouraging people from learning some pretty simple stuff. Stop over complicating. You’re not dark or mysterious. Your parents probably sent you to music school and you have knowledge of theory and some pretty freaking good taste in music. Also, you’re an amazing musician. You can play so many instruments so well, but please, Don’t make me just start a channel where I give out all the formulas to all of the synth recipes for every song on kid a ,amnesiac etc.. drum patterns too! It’s not your music, Homie. You learned it very well. Teach it to other people properly, please. Don’t tease people with all these covers and literally zero explanation about anything significant except confusion. I’m so sorry if this sounds like an attack it just frustrates me that you don’t share your knowledge. Never mind fluffy. That person won’t even speak.
Thanks for the 5-16 thing. It really opened a new horizon for me!
I cannot put enough emphasis on how grateful I am of your work. I discovered Radiohead about 3-4 years ago and I had reached a point where I found it hard to get inspired with new content. That emptiness is now filled thanks to you! You are a brilliant musician, and quite an inspiring guy! Thanks for all!
Nice vid. If I had to choose 1 pedal it would be delay. With a good delay you can make harmonies, chorus, phase, reverb & if you use enough, background synth sounds. There was a period of time I didn't have a drum set or drummer & I would use delay from earlier parts of the song to create fills later in the song.
If I keep watching these I'm going to end up getting back into it. While I wouldn't consider it a bad use of time, I don't really have that time.
So far every vid I've watched from this channel has great information. It's not mucked up with technical jargon, it doesn't build up some small technique as the end all of play style, it's not flashy or click baitey & the creator is pleasantly average (no offense, your cool but not intimidating). You get just enough of a technique to expand on but not so much info that it's overwhelming. These vids remind me of a casual sit down with a fellow musician. I was lucky to work at an instrument repair shop, my tips were rarely money but often technique. These vids are going to make me buy a guitar again and lose sleep.
When I saw Jonny playing Present Tense live I got so confused, now I understand it haha
Amazing video, thanks for sharing ;)
ohhhhh please more of this! this is gold!
at least i know how he does that part on present tense.. such a magic song.. greenwood is one of those guitarrist that has a very unic and particular aproach to the instrument.. he is unic! Great data buddy!! thanks as usual!
Thanks again for your work Joe. This is extrememy useful for us RH fans trying to learn more about the band
Great video, thx !
Please can we visit with The Smile riffs.
You are awesome for explaining that synth/appreciator delay sound on present tense. Just saw the smile song where Jonny is using it and went on a hunt to find an explanation! Thank you good sir-
thank u, it is realy inspiring. Now I have writer's block, but I think that your videos like this will realy help me to find a new way to use som kinda gear that I already have
DUDE you're amazing please do more of these either about certain pedals or techniques
clever insight of how you figured out the delay on Staircase... strong ear! Seeing them perform this at Bonnaroo 2012 was a highlight of an awesome festival
This’s great vid, I love Jonny Greenwood( I’ve met him ☺️) I also use a tele with a single coil. I came to understand that I could never become him so I moved to a normal tele but I real wanna learn his effect techniques.
incredible video Joe! i hope you continue uploading more videos!
Wow man, this a such a great vid. I learnt a lot about using delay as a compositional device as opposed to an effect. Thanks.
Joe, I really appreciate these tutorials and it makes me realize that I really should pick up my guitar again :)
Your channel is just a gift that keeps on giving... Can we expect a Present Tense cover?
I think so, eventually! Such a beautiful chord progression.
AGREED!
Nice work, fella. Been struggling with the tap temp for dotted 8ths and such for a while, so this was really helpful. Thanks!
Thank you very much Joe!
Edit : Btw please breakdown how exactly Ed playing too, especially Nude on the basement version 😀🙏
Beautiful, thank you
Amazingly educative and helpful video!, thank you very much
Dude.. You're awesome. Keep up the work and the creative flow~
very well spoken, good video
burn holiday? do you have any albums? just looked for it on YT music but didn’t find anything.

Dude, this is awesome! More re-20 related videos please!
greenwood tremolo tricks pleaseee!!
Fantastic explanation and great, down to earth presentation! I’ve been really enjoying your original music and the great covers on your channel since discovering it a couple of weeks ago. The tutorial vids are super helpful and inspiring.
Hey man, you are so awesome and your videos are so well done. Just one huge request. try and ask how many of those disclaimers at the beginning are necessary or are anything anyone would actually care about. it is a little like purgatory when you are wanting to just get to the technical explanation of the concepts you are curious about and there is about 4 minutes of disclaimer before you get to the only thing you actually care about.
I hope that doesn't sound harsh because your videos are literally fucking amazing and perfect other than that. You are the fucking man and I love you
yo Joe, thanks for this video, the counting techniques are extremely helpful
Superb video and vibe, subscribed.
Hey Joe, what a great video. I had a radiohead's cover band and always show your videos (fluffy's too) to the guys. It's just so good, keep rockin!
This is great! Could you do a video on how they use the KP3
Thanks! Maybe, it’s an idea!
very useful channel thanks
love this mate! well done. Fantastic work. Great ear you have. thanks a lot bro!
You're amazing! Excellent explanations, loved it!
So Radiohead are a bunch of unconventional genius nerds. Love it and love them. 28 Live Shows Including a marriage proposal to my wife (2016 MSG) and counting
Jeez man, thanks for taking the time to show exactly how to play these Radiohead tunes. Its tricky for someone like me to figure this stuff out, even WITH tabs. You get the tone and playing spot on. And btw, your covers with taka are the closest covers to Radiohead that Ive ever heard. Ive had the pleasure to travel and see Radiohead live a ridiculous amount of times. An amazing live band and your covers are bang on. 🙏☘️☘️☘️
You should look into the software Max/MSP, Joel. Im pretty sure thats how jonny made the stutter delay for the solo in go to sleep.
Indeed it is! TKoG’s pedal among other things is meant to emulate what his Max MSP patch is doing (recording a variable length buffer and playing it back at random intervals). I’ve done a similar patch using Pure Data (the open source version of Max MSP style object programming made by the same creator). Tons of fun!
are there any delay tricks in airbag?
Well, when they did it live occasionally Jonny would simultaneously/alternatively step on his Space Echo footswitch and his whammy octave up with two feet! That’s sort of a trick in my book 😅
@@JoeEdelmann3 😂😂😂… I noticed when Jonny plays the tremolo picking part during the second verse and the bridge section that he is allowing the space echo do some of the work because his picking hand isnt super fast or anything i think. or maybe my eyes are deceiving me. i didnt know if there was a tap tempo effect going on or not.
oh man do i love jonny's guitar part in staircase
Thanks for your content!!
Wonderful video. Congrats, mate!
Very nice!
Tomorrows Modern Boxes slaps
What is that sticker on your telecaster? xD
Amnesiac Minotaur!
Wow. Great walk-thru, Joe! You articulated the concepts behind the techniques so perfectly. Really enjoying all the content you've been putting out-keep it up!! Trickster was my fav thus far but I just heard your song, Marionette, and it's awesome! Cool to hear the RH influence "creep"-ing its way into your original stuff now. Would love to collaborate one day.
What kind of delay are you using?
It’s a digital emulation of a classic tape delay (the Boss RE-20 Space Echo)! Has a handy tap tempo and some fun other features.
whats the sticker on your guitar? can you share a link where i can buy it from ? Also, really coool video man, thanks
It’s the Amnesiac Crying Minotaur design! I got it on eBay!
Thanks for the video and the detail! I am a little confused around setting the dotted eights for identikit. If I have tap tempo on my pedal - do I just tap in the bpm of the song and then use the subdivision on the pedal (which has dotted eights?) . When I do this the tempo seems too quick?
That is another way to do it! You just have to be wary of what you’re counting/tapping as quarter notes (the bpm). The song has a double time feel so the “quarter notes” should be somewhere ~150bpm or so I think!
@@JoeEdelmann3 yep I set the tap tempo at 150 and then selected the sub division as dotted eights - is that right ? (Thank you for the reply too)
@@Eurobailey80 should be! No worries!
Hi ! I've been trying for a long time now to achieve the delay setting for Present tense. I own a srtymon Timeline. trying to tap as you do but not working well and not very comfortable with the 5/16th either. would it be possible to put it in a Delay sec to add / I suppose quarter note with no feedback / the other settings being "standard"? thanks!
At 92 bpm, 5/16th is around 815.2 milliseconds, so maybe you could try using a 815ms delay?
@@JoeEdelmann3 Thanks a lot. It is better - I think I need to work on the rhythm/ arpeggios to make it sound closer to the original one. Thanks again for the quick reply! love your work !
I’d love to start a channel and do this
This is amazing and really informative. Please keep making these! Great job, man :)
A Vangelis fan eh? When can we expect a cover of Memories of Green? :)
Do you hear a similarity between Identikit sound after bridge you played and the riff from The Smile’s song Opposites??
100%! Definitely the same inspiration to me.
Amazing video!
Thank you
What model and year tele is that? The classic butterscotch blonde has really grown on me over the years. What a beauty
Christopher Noia it’s a 2004 American deluxe Ash! It is a great color!
@@JoeEdelmann3 sweet dude. I got a but ahead of myself as you describe it in the video, but now I know the year too!
Pardon my ignorance Joe, but what's your logic in your 4 count before tapping out the delay? Is it just to get your initial tempo?
Yep, just sort of gearing up for the tempo and what the subdivision should feel like! It can be helpful if you’re playing with a band and want to lock in to them first before putting a syncopated rhythm in. But it’s not totally necessary! ☺️
@@JoeEdelmann3 cool cool. Tried this at the studio last week with my band. New tune we are working on. Playing with delays. Works pretty well. Cheers dude
@@JoeEdelmann3 reminds me of John Lennon counting in the beat to “A day in the life” …’Sugarplum fairy, sugarplum fairy”
Excellent!!
great work, love you joe
Nice work, my dude!
Love your videos man
amazing vid bro
Thank you for this.
Question: Di you think the ehx canyon pedal would kill a couple of birds with one stone for Radiohead effects in general? It’s got pitch stuff and modulation
The Canyon is a very cool pedal! I think it's definitely versatile, and no doubt you could conjure some Radiohead-esque atmospherics with it, but in my mind (without much experience with it) its still very much a delay in terms of function, rather than a multi-fx. I think for pitch effects you'd still want something more Whammy-like, and for modulation a Small Stone or some type of tremolo. But as always, depends on your budget and your needs/tastes.
Is it possible to get this 5/16 delay with NUX Tape Core?
I would think so! I don’t have first hand experience with this unit, but i believe it has a tap tempo functionality (and hopefully long enough delay times).
@@JoeEdelmann3 Thanks. I have the pedal and I’m slowly understanding more and more (first pedal ever bought).
I’m practicing Thin Thing by The Smile which, I believe, is in 6/8 (at least Jonny’s guitar) with bpm 95. It is kind of hard to match exactly, and you have to find the exact settings.
Therefore I asked.
I'm considering a RE20 because from what i heard online its awesome...
But I'm wondsring how it compares to other delays such as EQD Disaster transport or boss dd500 / Re500 or something else that can get that tone and more.
One thing that scares me is the RE20 converts everything including the dry signal to a digital signal. Thoughts?
Levi Jesse the RE20 is very awesome and has a very specific vibe but a lot of cool features. EQD is also badass and the Disaster Transport sounds great, it’s a bit more of a “bucket brigade/Memory Man” type voicing and although it’s true bypass the effect itself is digital signal processing also. The DD500 like you said is a swiss army delay that will get you a lot of styles if you’re looking for more than just a great tape echo simulation.
In short, can’t go wrong with any of the three! But if you’re looking for a tape style specifically, I think the RE20 has the special edge there.
dont understand why people think digital is bad. technology has moved on and you can't tell the difference between digital and analog now
I really enjoy your channel Joe. Keep going and we keep listening and watching.
What is the delay effect he does for the outro of the fake plastic trees live version? Btw I just wanted to tell you how much these videos have helped me, thank you so much :)
I think TKOG knows all about it... www.google.com/amp/s/thekingofgear.com/post/173535628530/fake-plastic-trees-jonnys-2018-effects/amp
Thanks so much, I look forward to seeing you do a cover on it eventually 😁
Thank you, this tutorial is precious! 🙏
what model Tele is that? 👍🎸 edit(never mind, kept watching. lol)
Great video! could you tab out the Present Tense part?

@@JoeEdelmann3 Thanks! Love the channel!
Fluffymomo/Taka is also a guy I watch.
I don’t know him though.
He’d probably be cool to hang out with.
Check out the horrors. They are pedal nerds as well 😎
5/16th subdivision got me confused but I assume its a quarter + one 16th note, very odd
That it is! Yeah, a little tricky at first but it starts to get a little easier with practice. You could count it like drummers do with a “1 e & a 2 e” and tap on the 1 and the second e, that helps flow a little faster!
Hello Joe, Do you set the repeat rate on "normal or long mode" of your space echo?
Alan Balmori wow, you just taught me that that function exists haha. I’m not sure, gotta check! But most of the times I use on it sound medium short (300-800ms ish maybe)
Gracias por tú trabajo
hope your channel grows big :)
Do you think the spring reverb on my amp could sub for Jonny's sound or would a digital reverb pedal be better? Thanks
glennc100 depends on what you’re aiming to do with it! You can definitely get some good ambience for Jonny’s tremolo picking, coin sliding , etc out of a classic amp spring. After all, the reverb side of Jonny’s Space Echo delay pedal (and of the original tape units) is a spring-style, and he uses that sound element from time to time. On songs like Decks Dark, however, the benefit of having a dedicated pedal (modeling a spring or other types of reverb) is that he can aggressively stomp it in and out for bursts of reverb, which you could only get in a spring loaded amp by kicking or shaking it (which I don’t recommend unless you’re Lee Perry 😝)
Thanks Joe!
Hey! Huge Radiohead fan here and loving these videos about how they get their awesome sound. I had a question about the Present Tense section: how are you palm muting the strings when playing that arpeggio? I've been trying it out but it feels weirdly unnatural. Thanks and awesome vid!
Hey! Thanks!! It’s less of a true palm mute and more just tapping the strings with your palms right before you finger pluck each string. So down motion palm taps strings, up motion thumb or finger plucks the right string. It is a little hard to describe or get down, but you’ll get a feel for it!
Awesome stuff man! I've heard that in setting 4 and 9 that you can double tap to get a dotted eighth...have you found this true? I'm ready to pull the trigger on picking one up. But I change divisions alot throughout playing, and would much prefer and "easier more straightforward " way to tap in for dotted eighth. Any help would be appreciated!
Buddy JR I actually haven’t heard of or tried that before! But it’s not too too hard to tap the dotted eighth either at reasonable tempos! It’s a great, unique pedal in any case
Joe Edelmann oh okay. Yeah I have a few that are in t 140-145 bpm range those are the ones that seem a little more ehhhhhhh haha
Thank you very much for this man ! Keep up the good work ! 🙏🏼
start at 5:01
Thanks
I was baffled with the delay on present tense. Not anymore. Cheers dude
Nice
Nice Joe! We do it for the same reasons. Love of Radiohead....been subscribed for a while and love the commitment and talent! Thanks for the tricks! We just put out a Present Tense cover sans Jonny's live part which is the best, but I can only do so much at once and we're trying not to overdub in our performances. You have a killer voice for Thom! Keep it up! So much fun! Radiohead rules!
Whats the name pf the first song
Identikit?
Please how did you do your homemade ondes martenot?
Hi! I’m still developing the prototype with its co-creator - I may make a video on this later on.
Thankyou!!!!
I love you bro ❤️
I clicked so fast I almost dropped my phone.
590 ms that's what I use for Johnny
What I’m trying to figure out is how he gets those huge, clean distortion tones like in Zero Sum. It’s like overdriven clean or something. I need that sound for a song I’m recording. I don’t want weak clean, but I don’t want screaming broken up distortion. I haven’t figured out how to do this thus far.
Awnte jonny greenwood!😀
what scale is the solo of identikit in?
Mohamed Nabil I believe it’s in F# natural minor (Aeolian mode), if that helps!
