- Here is a time lapse of the last full action repair I did on a 1974 Fender Rhodes stage model. This was done using the Fender Rhodes refurb kit from Vintage Vibe as well as a brand new damper arm install. This included hammer tips, damper felts, Miracle Mod and key pedestal re-felt, new grommets and screws, voicing, and escapement set up.

Thanks Simon! In the first track yes. Same in the second track but I was using analog lab for pads. I think there is some organ in the first track as well. So glad you’re enjoying the music. No trumpet but sounds like the better bits of Miles Davis in the fusion period. I like Rhodes as dry as possible but I did like the effects on this. It's crazy how live it sounds.

Sounds really good and soulful. Did you make any adjustments to the pickups to to get some of the bell character out?
Yep. Some of the pick ups were to close and the tines were clanking against them.

Awesome video. At 3:33 it looks like the key pedestals already have those little bumpers installed, were these a feature in 1974 or was the "miracle mod" added already at some point? EDIT: Doy.. had I only waited one minute I would have learned that at 4:33 you answered this question..!! Cattywampus indeed..!

Thanks! Tolex was in good shape actually. Time, precision, willingness to learn, delicate care and patience all tie in. It's not hard I would say.
I have a '71 Mark 1A Seventy-Three I am just now getting around to starting my tune-up and refurb. Bought it 6 years ago for $700.
Excellent inside condition, not so much outside.
This video was awesome and shows that it can be done efficiently with the proper procedures.

Thanks for this - great to see! A couple of questions if you don't mind...I noticed that you set the escapement by installing shims, after you did the voicing. I had read in the service manual that escapement should be adjusted by raising/lowering the tone bar assembly, and that after this, you then carry out voicing. Did I miss you 'tweaking' the escapement after you installed the shims, and did you then have to re-voice after that too? And one more question...I saw you replaced some tines....what was it about those tines that made you need to replace them? Thanks again for a great video!
Escapement from raising or lowering the tone bar assembly won’t effect the voicing. That will happen if you raise or lower the closest screw on the tone bar to the keys. It raises and lowers the escapement as well and will affect the position of the tine. The front screw closest to the tine will adjust your voicing. Hope that makes sense. Also those tines were drifting out of tune, decayed quickly and sounded dull.

Wow! Awesome man! Thanks for taking the time to make this. What was the estimated costs for a full repair like this. I was recently blessed with one passed down from my grandpa. It’s a Rhodes Mark II stage piano. One day I would love to repair it, have it sounding like it should.
About 500-600 for all the parts

Thanks!! Literally just plugged it in direct to the computer with a Behringer interface into logic. Probably used the amp sim and a tape plug in.
well done - a great sounding overhaul. question - when you removed the stock shims on the side supports, did you find you had to raise the bass side up higher than the treble side? and if so, do you recall what size shims you installed? currently in the process of resetting escapement on a 75 suitcase and after removing the stock shims, i have hit a snag. any tips would be greatly appreciated!
Nicely done. Btw- how many hours did it take you? I bought a 73 stage new in the 70’s but sold it in 87 unfortunately. Retro is a good thing except for the weight factor of the Rhodes.
I can’t remember but somewhere between a total of 20-40 hours.
@@KrisYunker Kris, back in the day I had Dyno My Piano do some work on my Rhodes that was quite an improvement, but the new overhauled models out of VVP are off the hook.

What did you do to fix the hard metal against metal sound of the upper register?
Good question. That was bad voicing and pickups too close.
Thank you. I just got an 81 Suitcase. Love it but that upper register sounds a bit like a kids toy piano. Tells me I do not need to replace the hammer tips which I was not looking forward to.
Hal Perez well, take a look at those tips though. If they are worn down heavily than I would suggest replacing. It’s one of those things that just needs to happen every so often depending on the amount of playing it gets. A new set is not too expensive. It’s a little labor intensive doing the cleaning but get a good playlist of music going it breezes by.

Yes, It's the same process. The Vintage Vibe Miracle Mod video does a good good of showing and explaining what to do.
@@KrisYunker for some reason, some techs are telling me that if you’ve already got the Marcel curve than you don’t need the bump mod, but my action sucks big donkey dicks even though the piano sounds fantastic.
@@d179654582248 check you key height, escapement, and make sure your bushing aren’t too tight. Also lube your balance and front rail pins with Protek.

Did you try raising the tine and tonebar? It could happen if the tine is too close to the hammer.
