I'm RETURNING my OnePlus Open! (for Samsung Fold 5)

  • After testing the One Plus Open for a week, I'm returning it! I will be keeping my Samsung Galaxy Fold 5. Sadly, I missed the wireless charging, had concerns about service and durability, and had camera lens fogging condensation issues / problems. Customer service didn't seem on par with Samsung...so I'm going to wait it out a while. Plus, the Samsung Fold 5 rocks! Bit of a longer video, but hope it helps someone shopping!

I sold my fold 5 for an OP open for one simple reason. The inner screen is so much nicer to look at than the samsung. Brighter, way less reflection and the crease on the fold 5 is still It's achilles heel.
The inner screen should be one of the biggest considerations on a foldable over anything else.

Went to best buy for something, not a phone, but curiosity killed me. I picked up the sammy fold 4, i dunno, may have been the 5. I almost choked on my coffee while laughing out loud how dam skinny the sam fold was. I can see where users never use the front screen. Its stupidly skinny. The leaks of the fold6,same screen size as the s23 ultra, now THAT has my attention. Im sticking with my old note9... the 1+ looks promising with a good o/s update or two

Right move to send back faulty hardware. I'm still taking the risk myself because if I dont have this hardware issue then this device is by far the best foldable out there. By law I have a right to send back online purchases within two weeks anyway so it's really no risk at all.

I tried the open as well, there was alot to like about it but also a fair amount i didnt like including no 5g out of the box here in Toronto. I had to download an app and fiddle around to get it working. One plus support was absolutely useless for that issue. So i returned it (that process was smooth and easy) and stayed with rotating between my fold 5/S23 ultra which ive had since launch.

I'm sorry but haven't found that with the two Opens I personally own. I also have the fold 5 currently.
The two opens i have do not get foggy, maybe because they are production units.
The Opens are superior to the fold 5 in 80% off my use cases.
Btw i have owned a Fold 2, 3 and 4 previously. These Opens work much better.

@jamiehunter3567 I will admit I was extremely sad to be sending it back. It felt like the Next Generation Samsung fold and that I was taking a step back by keeping my samsung. The front screen was pretty awesome, and the inside display is epic. And, fast charging rules... in fact, I'm almost positive if I didn't have the camera fogging issue and customer service would have taken care of me on my first issue, I probably would have kept it over the samsung. I dont have big hands and I dont have any issues using Fold 5 front screen. At least you get little better aspect ratio consuming media in landscape mode on the inner screen. I almost got Open for my first foldable but it was lens flare that made me cancel my early bird deal. I also didnt trust OnePlus support structure to deal with inner screen issues. I noticed that the picture quality can be great but the problem i have is that it's not consistent. I have to take the same scene multiple times to get a good photo. You have to really be aware of the lighting and movement. It takes more effort to compose but this much effort isn't for most people. You can pull out a fold5 or any Samsung S and just take a picture and it would be good enough 90% of the time and this is how most people use their phone camera. If you like taking photos and actually compose your shots, shoot it in manual, post process and all that then the camera on the Open is good for this use case.

The valid criticism in your video is regarding the camera fogging issue. This is a serious problem and should warrant an immediate refund or replacement.Concerns about the phone's trade-in value decreasing appeal only to a niche group who frequently trade in their phones. The majority of users prefer to retain their phones for 2-3 years, largely due to the hassle involved in transferring data to a new phone. This isn't a common situation for most people.

Software Software SOFTWARE. Oneplus was a cool phone but I had all the same support concerns in addition to some software bugs/limitations that were just.....odd. Open Canvas was excellent, but then i would have random apps that wouldn't split screen ( The camera cant? Why?) which then meant I couldn't save an app pair. Maybe android 14 fixes this? Also the total lack of home screen control whether we are talking separate home screens for each display or changing the grid size is a joke. Some might not care but at this price point I care.

Your video is waste. Everyone knows the Open is much better that any another foldable phone now.

As I mentioned, I'd love to have both. I'm a fan of the wireless charging, waterproofing, and support network. I do miss the zoom and superior displays of the Open.

Oneplus open is way par then samsung and don't forget it's 5th version vs oneplus very first model .....
Samsung has that ugly bump on screen very small front screen poor hardware oneplus takes the win any day

Both are great, but I've never had a Fold 5 len fogging issue. And the fact their customer service ignored the issue, scared me off for now. I decided I valued IPX8, wireless charging, and a local service support structure.

No you are wrong take it outside on a cold or humid day and when moisture gets in the cameras then tell me it's better than Samsung...I think not!

@jasonelliot9633 Other reviewers are trying to sweep this issue under the rug, and/or live in San Diego, 😄
