I've seen it described before that the original lion king is almost religious in it's overtones and presentation of itself and the themes it represents. The ceremony with Simba, Mufasa in the skies, the focus on the circle of life, it all feels so grand and magnificent without being overbearing or corny. You can tell the animators and writers put every last bit of love into this movie.
The 2019 film loses every last drop of that. It's completely soulless, it's lifeless, it's not passionate or caring about it's own themes at all. You watch the interviews with the actors and no one cared about their performance at all. That's not to mention the constant and ear grating mentions of Beyonce that are clearly just there to market the movie more by slapping a big name on the IP. John Favrue just wanted to flex tech capabilities by going on and on about making the remake look like a documentary. It's so depressing.
You know that saying, turn water into wine? Disney took the wine their animators and writers already made, and turned it into dish water.
Well said!
¨You know that saying, turn water into wine? Disney took the wine their animators and writers already made, and turned it into dish water.¨
This is it. This is the remake.
I don’t understand why they would bring on Beyonce and not do the song Shadowland. What a waste
Jon tried to make all the animals realistic, but they look either taxidermied or diseased instead.
Yup!
Yes! And DUSTY
Dinos a urs the early 2000s movie was a better realistic film woth MORE facial expressioms
Freaking Aslan from the Narnia movies, which are nearly 20 years old, had more expressive features. You can see the sadness, the pride, the anger in Aslan's face. You know what he's thinking. And lions IRL are super expressive! They snarl, they even "smile". This movie was so bad that it had unrealistic realistic lions.
Scar just looks WRONG. Even ignoring the first movie. Its like his face is too big or something. It doesnt make him look scrawny or whatever. Just ... weird
This movie is literally an example of a classmate copying someone's essay and changing some sentences in the paragraph to try and make it less obvious.
To put it more bluntly it's just an example of garbage
SparkNotes: The Movie.
This comment is literally an example of someone not understanding the meaning of the word “literally”.
@@_TeddyCore This comment replying to mine is irrelevant.
One problem with this movie is disney tried to play on peoples nostalgia and ended up changing the scenes so much it lost that "disney magic" back when we watched the original.
It completely missed the point of the movie
Bad screenwriting probably doesn't help either
"They gave the mouse an arc."
It's bullshit!!!
Allot of the disney remakes seem to be "Telling" instead of "Showing" one of the billion reasons why they're fucking terrible.
You’re not wrong!
I liked when you were talking about how this is the worst movie you've ever seen and there was that dung beetle pushing around that huge pile of shit. It was like the movie itself was agreeing with you x'D
That's why I played that part twice in a row ;)
I remember watching that scene and thinking, “what’s the bloody point of all that? To have simbas hair being rolled around in a pile of giraffe shit?’
35:46 EXACTLY, WHO ARE THEY! The point in the original was that Timon and Pumbaa were OUTCASTS! They didn’t fit in with other animals, but were such good friends, and good for one another because they could relate to one another and GMMNWSHNRAJFH!
They missed the point of every single scene from the original it’s crazy
@@FilmTheRightThing yeah I agree they fucked up sooooooo much. I absolutely adore the original. I love catching subtle “blink and you’ll miss it moments” like when he looks in the pool of water, he does it kind of slow in anticipation, so that’s why he’s so disappointed, but then after “seeing” Mufasa, his body moves in a way as if he’s going to lay down so he can stare at the reflection for a while but instead he hears his voice. It’s super quick but I love it!
@@FilmTheRightThing i hope you did this review of the rest of the remakes, it felt good seeing you rant about this teaming pile lol
@@charg1nmalaz0r51 we’ve done a bunch of them
@@FilmTheRightThing I just binged them lol. You need to do the new peter pan. You could also compare it to the 2003 remake aswell.

We know your pain lmaoo
Love the technical details these guys notice, and like the meaning behind how things are shot. Very interesting to listen to

Disney Remakes: where they only exist to profit from nostalgia
Yep. Pretty much like the Disney Star Wars trilogy.
Oh, well, ... At least these remakes have a story to tell.
A bad story.
But a story nonetheless
Aladdin and the jungle book was pretty good tbh
@Briggs Francisco What does that have to do with this video or this comment?
The whole first half of this video is "let us bask in the glory of the past because the present is abysmal"
And I fucking love it
And 2 years later nothing’s changed
I love how all their predictions were dead on. It kills me.
It’s not too hard to predict a disney film!
really liked your commentary about the visual storytelling and symbolism!
especially the stuff about the direction of the movement. my native language is written from right to left, so all of that flew over my head until now, so thanks =)
No problem! It comes from watching the film A LOT. If you want more insights like this subscribe if you haven't already!
The reason "Be Prepared" song was ruined in the remake is bc they added it at the last minute. They originally cut the song from the movie, but when the public found out about that there was a huge outcry about it so Disney had to rush it in there
Yep we remember when that came out!
That was the most stupidities idea to get rid of the most liked song to begin with, and it’s even more offensive to ruined it
What where they thinking?
@@XWierdThingsHappenX They originally cit it because in the original film the evil hyena's were "goose stepping" while marching like fascists. They thought that they needed to completely remove the song because the bad guys were fascists in the original lol. THEY WERE LITERALLY THE BAD GUYS!! I hate the 2019 movie.
I just realised that this remake is like a metaphorical Scar killing the old movie, taking it’s place and making it into a barren wasteland.
true
the fact that The Lion King 2019 exists makes me more depressed than i already am
I hate having to make the distinction
I saw this and hated it instantly. I'm just thinking out loud: I just watched the most unoriginal and souless movie ever. No emotions in the characters at all, the musical scores weren't the same as the 1994 movie, I could go on. I give this movie... Worst movie award.
It really is one of the worst movies of 2019, it's crazy that they messed this up
@@FilmTheRightThing A classic movie no doubt. Shame on Jon Favro for messing up a fantastic movie.
@@Scorpiogirl_1029 I'd argue it was doomed to fail from the start
There was no need to remake it, period. This film as well as all the live action remakes, are nothing but the perfect example of where creativity died and was replaced by corporate greed.
At 11:44, I was like "Yup! This guy gets it!"
I was SIX when I saw this movie for the first time on VHS in 1995. So yeah, you can guess my age (turned 32 last month). I had the unfortunate privilege to see the CGI version in cinemas because I was holding on hope that they wouldn't screw up. The only way I could be "allowed" to critique it is by watching it. The room was, obviously, full of families with children probably a little too young to get it. I didn't get the message until I was 9-10. So yeah, a grown-ass man of 30 watched "nostalgia" with his grown-ass brother and wonderful mother around 5-6 years old kids. That grown-ass man had to hold himself from laughing with a hand over his mouth to respect the audience because that's the only way I could process how bad the entire movie was AND IT IS!!! And as much as I love my family, they didn't understand why I didn't like it. Yup: the camera-style techniques, the personality, the over-explanation, the nuances all replaced by pandering. If I were alone in the theaters, I would have left after "Be Prepared".
I would encourage anyone with a bit of passion for Disney Renaissance to take a look at the original making of narrated and presented by Robert Guillaume (bless his soul), the voice of Rafiki. It's just wonderful! "The Lion King: The Making of a Walt Disney Masterpiece"
I still have the VHS, I still have a Simba puppet plush and, that same year (2019), I went to a music store just looking for discs and I saw the soundtrack for The Lion King 2019 and was offended... I was trying to move it behind the classic version to make sure kids and families would see the old one and then I saw The Legacy Collection 2-disc pack. Of course I bought it since I used to have the cassette tape!!!
How much they butchered the "Murderer!" scene with the Lionesses jumping in it.
How they butchered EVERY scene though
@@FilmTheRightThing not just emotionally(photo realism) but the shot composition! Wouldn't it be cool if with a time machine we convince 1995's Peter Jackson and Disney to make an animated hobbit?
@ Agreed about the photorealism. I don't know how a Disney produced Hobbit movie would go though...even in the Disney renaissance
@@FilmTheRightThing You know how Disney takes dark stuff and makes it lighter? The hobbit is a kids book so it'd be like giving fish to a sushi restaurant!(bet they'd prove Tolkien wrong!)
@@FilmTheRightThing
'94: MURDERER!
'19: MURDERER! YOU KILLED HIM! HOW COULD YOU?!?!
Just...why add that extra dialogue?
When you realize in the scene where Simba follows Rafiki, not only is he going left to right, but they often show Rafiki going right to left in the next cut several times. This results in confusing the audience as to who is where. They look like they're running in different directions.
They managed to screw up the 180 rule during a CHASE scene. Even film students get that right in simple dialogue scenes. The filmmaking of soap operas is built almost solely on this one fundamental, basic rule: don't flip the camera's POV so far that interacting characters look like they're focused away from each other.
This half a billion dollar film couldn't get it right.
So amateurish.
How can Jon Faverau want to shoot like a documentary and do bullshit like that

Honestly just wondering why, if they wanted to make a pretty documentary style film without as much expression in the face so bad, why they didn't just remake Bambi. Bambi would have worked so much better with this style. Not saying it'd be great or anything, but... less bad than the Lion King? The Lion King depends heavily on its characters and their relatability, whereas Bambi is much more about the woods and how the animals live within them. Idk just a thought.

The only thing I do like from this movie, the only thing, is nala escaping pride rock. It's called taking a new direction versus screwing the original.
but like we said in the video it's so unnecessary because the dynamics of the group as they were originally set up in the 1994 movie, make her "escape" less convoluted. Every choice the remake makes is the wrong choice.
@@FilmTheRightThing True but my point is that if they were going to remake lion king they should have gone with something new story wise. The original was perfect so, try to give us a twist or something. Better than Favauro on crack.
I love that my cousins high school production of the lion king I saw in like 2015 ? was like 100 times better than whatever the hell the remake was.
I did this too I ran to the 94 version and fell asleep to the 2019 version

50:30 "That's not The Lion King, that's a nature documentary. Which is not what I'm supposed to be thinking." Unfortunately it is, cause that's exactly what Favaro said he was going for! He said he wanted it to feel so real, you feel like you're watching a documentary
But it doesn’t feel real
@@FilmTheRightThing Which is exactly why it doesn't work!!!
Yeah. And it was a really stupid idea that literally no one asked for. Just saying "Thats what it is" isn't an alleviation of criticism
In your fave 1994 spot, Simba runs to left (double-focus) to face the past. Ending too short!? Hey, I've been in recover-war-zones that can erupt in no time. The tight pacing gives this film's climax best thrill value.
Sometimes when I am sad I just watch this video and laugh and laugh. You guys are hilarious but also so interesting and insightful to listen to. Speaking of directors with distinct visual style, imagine if they'd gotten George Miller to direct the remake. THAT would have been a movie worth making.
I don't think a remake of this is worth doing artistically at all. There's nothing that a remake would improve conceptually. I think remakes are warranted when the original film isn't great/good but there's something there that could be improved. Think: The Thing, Insomnia, The Fly, The Manchurian Candidate, etc.
the Mufasa origin story joke has aged like wine now holy shit. They're really making a Mufasa origin story MOVIE

How I would fix this movie to make it watchable. (I don't care how many people try to kill me for this)
1. give the characters their facial expression back.
2. recast it. (especially James earl jones, beyonce, and Jon Oliver)
3. cut out all the unneeded footage. (I had to say GET ON WITH IT endlessly)
4. make the musical numbers at least more energetic (having the animals just walk and run was pathetic)
5. use the Broadway music and songs (He lives in you should've been played instead of beyonces lame shit)
6. the movie would not be a shot-for-shot remake of the original (Go ahead and shoot my head off and see if that changes anything)
7. resaturate the colors (it doesn't have to be so cartoony but at least vibrant enough to look visually pleasing)
8. make Be Prepared longer and better (the altered lyrics can stay)
9. Have Can You Feel The Love TONIGHT sung at night.
10. fix the stampede so it's more suspenseful and more intense
11. force the audience to get over that it wouldn't be a shot-for-shot remake.
12. use deleted scenes and storyboards concept ideas from the original movie.
13. Leave in the most important scenes and heartwarming moments from the original while trying to be different.
14. Bring special security with me if people start rioting and hating me for changing the story.
or, just don't make it at all

That's incorrect, Part of it was sung by Irons, but Jim Cummings took over the bigger notes

One thing I despise about the lion king remake is timone and pumba.
1. Timone and Pumba are self aware of their brand. They're stinkin nobodies that NOBODY wants to be around. That's their entire deal! So them having a record of how people react to their brand DEFEATS THEM BEING OUTCASTS.
2. On the topic of Timone and Pumba being outcasts, WHY DO THEY HAVE FRIENDS? Again, Pumba stinks and Timone is...Timone. Who would want to be around them other than Simba who didn't have any better options.
3. They make every joke last way too long. Every. Single. Line. It lasts far too long to remain funny. It keeps devolving into improv rambling humor that rumors the sharp, witty humor they kept on expanding on to ruin. One of the worst offenders is nihilist Timone, like, he coulda just laughed in Simba's face and left at that, but no, he has to go into detail how he views how life works and drags out the joke until it isn't funny anymore.
4. THEY JUST KEEP TALKING, OMG, A QUARTER OF THE ADDED RUNTIME IS JUST TIMONE AND PUMBA NOT BEING FUNNY PLEASE SHUT UP
5. The jokes just keep being too on the nose. When Simba is asking what's on the menu, the representatives of what he was asking saying "please dont eat me" with each item ruins the joke. Another reason why Timone and Pumba shouldn't have friends.
to add onto point #3 everything about it is just too long
@@FilmTheRightThing Yeah. The movie is dragged out for what? The mouse lore and feeding time lore? And to expand on me harping on nihilist timone, being nihilistic on its own isnt funny. Jokes try to elate the audience, timone just being nihilistic is just depressing.

I’ve seen serial killer documentaries that have more personality than this movie
Yes. Because after watching the original lion king, that's what everyone was thinking: "You know what this movies missing? 120 million dollars worth of CGI "
I did some Googling because I was interested when you mentioned it: the opening lines of the song (the male singer) is the same person, but they did a different woman to do the bits I think you guys weren't fans of (also I totally agree!)
Good to know! Thanks!
Personally I took Mufasa talking to Simba about the stars more of a take on loneliness than a religious view on death itself. "when ever you feel alone look at the stars and remember the kings of the past will be there to guide you and so will I". Sure it feels very spiritual and fantastical with Mufasa actually appearing in the clouds, I think Rafiki points us into the first interpretation with "look harder, he lives in you" right before he actually sees Mufasa in the water and the clouds and cloud Mufasa telling him "you have forgotten who you are and so forgotten me".
On the remake, id say a big problem is that it doesnt look realistic or magical. Its like says Tim Burtons color palette is realistic. That opening sky? Ive seen far more impressive and beautiful skies at dawn from my window in the city, nature has a habit of looking far more magical than we give it credit for. The lions, cats are very expressive animals, they have expressive faces, expressive body language, its like these people have never seen lions interact with how blank they are, they are social animals, they communicate with each other, they have instictual behavior. And also on the design of the lions and lionesses, there are lions with gorgeous unique facial fur coloring and gorgeous manes. If I just google images of lions theres tons of beautiful lions with unique colors that look way better than the lions in this movie.
Yeah Jon Favreau somehow showed that he hasn’t been outside in a very long time
"they remembered the past, probably" yes. this live action film is only 'good' if you've seen the original and it does a good enough job reminding you of how great it was. I'm thoroughly convinced that if anyone who thinks this film is good had not seen the original Lion King prior to watching the remake, they wouldn't think it was good, at all. Yes, it looks realistic and it's very cool that CGI has come this far, but that's about it that this film has going for it.

The original is animation royalty and in my number 1 spot amongst my top 10 favorite Disney movies. I even got to see it in 3D when I was 16. The remake is just garbage. Hearing people react to the remake is 10 times more entertaining than seeing it itself.
My favorite moment in the original was when Rafiki explains to Simba that his father's legacy lives on within him. Nala has reminded him of his past and introduced doubt in his 'easy' way of life, but lacked the wisdom and the patience that Rafiki has shown helping Simba overcome his fear and guilt. When faced with Simba's frustration over getting mislead at the lake he asks him to look again and helps him realize his destiny. "Look harder" is etched into my memory. Too bad the new version has butchered both damn scenes!

Yeah the irony is that in their pursuit of “realism” they neglected everything else, including all the things that made the original the classic it is. And despite all that attention, the cgi is gonna seem dated in ten years and this movie will become forgotten while the original will still be held in high regard as a classic.
I love your guys' commentary on the 2019 version. They ruined my favorite Disney movie of all time with the CGI remake of the same movie. I was laughing throughout your commentary because I had the same thoughts when I saw it in theaters too. Glad I am not the only one to see the trash of this film. Chronicles of Narnia had better CGI animation in that film of a lion, and that was back in 2007 or 2008. And Aslan even fricken emoted when he went to sacrifice himself before the queen to save Emmit. And I would say, I was hugely disappointed in that film, and it pained me to give my honest opinion and critique it negatively. I will say, The Jungle Book remake was actually really well done. It used the baseboard of the original 1961 animated film and made it its own story and movie. And actually kind of close to the original story by Rudyard Kipling, just without the dark ending, because face it, it is still a Disney movie. Yes, the animals in there look real, but one thing that the movie did right and the lion king didn't. The animals fricken emoted. When Sher Khan was annoyed that Mogli wasn't dead and he left the jungle when Akila told him he left the jungle and was no longer part of the wolf pack, Sher Khan's ear twitched. It is the equivalent of someone twitching their eyes to hold back the urge of latching out. And you felt the sheer power of dominance in Sher Khan in the 2016 version.
I would also love to point out that Hans Zimmer also did the film score for Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron, and The Prince of Egypt. Two other great fantastic animated films and The Prince of Egypt is my God another work of art for an animated film, it is a forgotten masterpiece that should deserve much credit too as the lion king.
Thanks! Not that big a fan of Prince of Egypt but maybe we’ll revisit it in a future video
@@FilmTheRightThing just go into it from an art perspective when viewing it. It is amazing what they did to it in a 2d animated film will little cgi to be done. All was hand drawn. Except for the parting of the sea and the plagues sequence. It is breathtaking to watch. And that was done in 1998.
I also don’t like how they turned Scar into a incel. Saying that he had feelings for Sarabi, but she chose Mufasa over him. And has been bitter and jealous about it ever since.
We have more of an issue they made him more straight when he clearly wasn’t in the original
And what makes 24:55 so much worse is that IJCWtBK Is supposed to represent Simba’s imagination of what it’s like to be king. That child-like wonder is completely gone in the 2019 movie. Absolutely bullshit of a movie, great video!
Yeah it’s heartbreaking, thanks!
Wow bruh I never noticed the contrasts between Simba and Scar being exalted....man movies used to be about something.
Some of them still are 2022 is shaping up to be one of the best years for movies in a long time, we’re gonna make a video about it soon!
I don't really see any reason why you should compare the original lion king with the new one because bees don't exactly try to convince flies why honey tastes better than shit.
You had us there in the first half not gonna lie haha
John Oliver may have had the worst performance in this movie, but the award for worst line read easily goes to Chiwetel Ejiofor's "Long live the king". A ridiculously long pause in a very unnatural place in the line, with nothing happening AT ALL during the silence. Absolutely kills the tension in what's supposed to be a huge emotional turning point in the story.
Most of the lines are candidates for worst line in the film tbh
My first time seeing one of your videos and it's amazing, I love it!
our next video is on beauty and the beast!
Timon and Pumbaa are the best things about The Lion King 2019 remake
There’s no best thing about the remake
.....................how? Seth rogans laugh makes me want to commit un-alive in minecraft
You guys keep saying "he sounds so old". James Earl Jones is 90. No shit 😂
John Favreau should've gotten someone different to voice Mufasa. No one wants to listen to his voice and wonder which retirement home is missing a resident. They replaced literally 90% of the other cast so whats the issue?
Yeah they pointed it out because the lines sounded awful and Mufasa sounded like a grandpa not a tough and intimidating lion father. It’s pointed out because it’s a real problem and shouldn’t have happened.
18:09 No John!!!! 18:10 STOP!!!! 18:25 CEASE!!!! CEASE AND DESIST I SAY!!!!
Hello, my son wanted to comment [teen, ASD, air sign]: 41:02 Lemurs don't live in Africa, that's a bushbaby/galago.

Jon tried everything but making a good movie! Even though he had a almost perfect blueprint..
They're doung LK2 remake ... have fun with that.
It's a prequel directed by Barry Jenkins sooo we'll see
Sounds interesting
The horrible part is that Disney is also planning to make a Prequel to the lion King(2019) 😭😭 when will the nightmare end
It will end when Disney ends
The Lion King prequel is in the works. Yay.... 2024, Be Prepared.
More content more tears
I had the Best time watching y'all! 🤣🤣🤯
Thank you!
The only pleasure to be derived from this movie is the suffering of people viewing it. I had so much fun listening to your suffering! Enjoyed the screen direction comments, too, though, and other comments, so not just sadistic pleasure in here.
Glad our suffering was worth it!
Agreed on all fronts on why this remake sucks and was as unnecessary as the 1998 Gus Van Sant Psycho remake! Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to go boot up my Nintendo Switch, pop in my copy of Fire Emblem Three Houses, replay the Azure Moon route in that game, and go experience the better Lion King story that came out in the summer of 2019!
Can't wait for them to ruin Bambi.🥳🥳🥳
I don’t want to see that but at the same time I do
They completely missed the point before even beginning by wanting to make a ”Leon King” movie feel like a documentary, therefore limiting any creative liberty before even starting to create. I just don't understand, you want it to look like a documentary but you animate talking animals, even in original there were very colorful scenes like in the beginning while Simba sang ”I can't wait to be king”that supposed to make us know that in that moment we are seeing through their childish unrealistic vision. But here we just see them walk and sing without any expression because it must be ”realistic” (then why are the lions talking???).
The 101 Dalmatians adaptation was realistic and worked, the dogs didn't even speak and we still understood what was happening in the scene without someone animating a talking dog. But you can't do the same in The Lion King there must be a dialogue therefore the realism goes to the trash, how is that so difficult to understand, it doesn't matter how good and real your animals look, by aiming to extreme realism while making them sing and talk you can't avoid the entire thing look confusing, weird and just bad.
It’s difficult to understand because Jon Favreau is a moron :)
Actually likes the new Lion King movie
?
You almost had a complete sentence. Youre almost there! Just a little more! :D
