What's your favorite 'underwater movie' from 1989?
Definitely The Abyss, love the whole Alien underwater theme to it.
This one Deepstar Six!
The Abyss, Deepstar Six, and Leviathan
All of them, what a time to be alive!
Uh Lords of the deep. Produced by Roger Corman and starring Priscilla Barnes and Bradford Dillman. Need I say more?
2:49 "Could you imagine being cooped up for months and not able to go see a movie?..." I think you Canadians call that 'winter'.
"I think the Snyder cut is what Miguel did to his sleeves"
This is so stupid so why can't I stop laughing? Nice job.
The Snyder cut was too funny.
Lol
Deep Star Six is a lot of damn fun. If you don't like creature features, you won't dig... wait, if you don't like creature features, what the hell are you doing here?
Well said
The storyline is basically exactly what the recent Underwater copied too.
@@mnomadvfx I also saw a similarity in the giant shark movie The Meg with jason statham, atleast the aquabase and them drilling through the ocean floor
I like Leviathan, too.
Yeah... but that was an adaptation of a book... that I still own... I think.
"This is like the shark from 'Jaws' Hiding in a goldfish bowl."
Great line!
I always felt like Miguel Ferrer was somewhat underrated. He was one of those guys who was in everything
There are a lot of actors that pop up everywhere; Clancy Brown, Pete Posthlwaite(RIP), Alun Armstrong
True. He even co-wrote a comic book called Comet Man for Marvel .
I just remember him as Jose Ferrer's son.
I actually was on speaking terms with him for a few years before he passed away, he and his wife were part of a mutual club with my parents so all of a sudden i'm sharing a table with him at an event. Very nice guy, very dry sense of humor.
He was really good in this. And in Twin Peaks too.
Awesome video!! I was actually one of the Creature FX artists on DeepStar Six, it was a blast to work on! We also did FX work on The Abyss and Lords of The Deep too, haha! It was the year of underwater monster movies! I’m starting to post some of my behind the scenes footage of FX I did for movies on my RUclips channel if you’re interested! I’ll be posting one this weekend all about the prop guns and weapons we did for Men In Black! Cheers👍🎃
Under the sea?
UNDER THE SEA?
That's your answer for everything, homer. It's not gonna happen.
The Jokes on you, he eventually gets there in one of the later seasons.
I believe "not with that attitude" is the response you were looking for
Well, not with THAT attitude it's not!
It's a shame that Deep Star Six got a 10% on Rotten Tomatoes.
To me, this movie is definitely in the 80% range.
Agreed.
its one of those movies everyone sees and says they enjoyed it, that rating makes no sense
Yeah I don't get the ridiculously low rating either, sure it's no masterpiece, but 10%???
People should stop giving that garbage site so much power.
For years Siskel and Ebert were the goto on movies and those pukes got so much wrong.
F*** rotten tomatoes.
Apparently it's based on only 10 critic reviews, too; weird
Seems like an admirable attempt at a horror movie that was really close to being great.
It was better than great, it was good.
I really like this one
It was great
@@krazykuz13cmc I agree
@@varanid9 lmao
"...I'm surprised we haven't seen [Jason] at the bottom of the ocean."
I don't know if this was filmed or not, but in Rob Hedden's script for "Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan," while the survivors of the cruise ship slaughter are in the row boat rowing to New York City, it was supposed to cut to showing Jason walking on the bottom of the Atlantic following them.
Probably was filmed since like everything else it didn't take place in Manhattan
Tag line should have been; Under The Sea No One Can Hear You Glug.
I would have said, "gurgle", but, yeah.
Remember watching this one many years ago. Remember the interesting monster design (kinda resembles an eurypterid - a class of extinct marine arthropods known today as "sea scorpions") but also how long it took for us to get a look at the creature, as well as the fact that more of the characters die from human incompetence than anything the monster actually does!
ıts supposed to be a eurypterid
It’s a good day when there’s a new Tenold video
(Hears idea of Jason voorhees underwater)
(to the tune of the spongebob theme) "Who wields a machete from under the sea? JASON VOORHEES!"
Instead of working at the Krusty Krab he hacks people that have crabs to bits.
The expression on his face as he waits for the drawn out opening of that door is priceless lol
Little known fact: The dude with the Lincoln beard got impaled with a bike by Alice Cooper.
Prince of Darkness is a great film!
He also played Murray "Boz" Bozinsky on the 1984-1986 American TV series Riptide
@@Puma20 love tht TV show
“No one will be seated during the thrilling door opening sequence.”
Ding!
The deep sea has always fascinated me, so I love these kinds of movies. As far as deep-sea creature-features go, this actually looks pretty good, especially the monster itself.
I recommend it. It’s a great creature feature
This and The Abyss came out the same year, 1989. I was 11. It was awesome.
I say give it a look and also check out Leviathan,The Abyss and Underwater 2020
Jason underwater... It’d be amazing watching him inevitably chase someone in a suit across the ocean floor while the people are forced to walk the same speed in the water as Jason.
They'd be fucked, they can't even get away from him when they're able to run.
Can't over emphasize the importance of remembering to decompress when ascending from extreme depths.
Man, I'm watching "Death Bed: The Bed that Eats" and dude, this movie has your name all over it.
Never clicked faster. I saw this movie in the theater in high school and LMAO. The local reviewer warned it was rated R for "creepy monster"
Hooray I love these under water horror movies
These movies were really underrated, there cheesy and fun at the same time.
Same, except for under water ironically.
The good underwater horror movie or bad underwater horror movie or both(it depends on what you like)
Same
Totally

Godzilla: Oh give me a break. I thought I told these humans not to disturb my territory with nuclear weapons. Oh well, time to wreak Tokyo again.
"Ya done goofed now Tokyo"

@@ManDuderGuy Japan doesn't have nukes.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan%27s_non-nuclear_weapons_policy
Not that it matters, Godzilla would still attack humans in general and blame them all.
I remember seeing this in the theater when I was a kid. Aaah, memories...
You know it's gonna be a good underwater movie if it came from the very late 80s to very early 90s.
They are fun to watch. I hope he reviews Leviathan, I really like that movie & find it super underrated. Has a great cast as well.
To me they are still decent until the mid to late 90s. I mean, movies like The Sphere have their share of problems but they are still overall enjoyable
@@edhc44 Sphere the book was good. The movie was garbage.
You haven't seen the alien within starring roddy mcdowall I take it?
😂
It´s a monster movie, where the monster actually didn´t kill most of the characters.
That is true. Only four people in the movie were directly killed by the monster. Everyone else was killed by something else.
They make a great effort to kill themselves off!
No, just neolithic incompetence from people that are supposed to be experts in underwater stuff building an installation for nuclear weapons.
So... Godzilla?
@@droth1031 The fuck you talking about? Godzilla blows up entire cities.
Perfect birthday present for me,a new Brandon Tenold video:)
Happy birthday bro!
@@joelplatt3396 Thank you:)
Saw this as a kid, and that scene where the guy gets bitten in half made me avoid water for months.
He had the beard of a survivor... Tom Skerrit had a beard. He died in Alien.
It wasn't the beard of a survivor. It was the beard of an extra.
Well. In a deleted scene Ripley torched him with the flamethrower.
Buuuut, since it IS a deleted scene that makes in non-canon..
@john smith it's not canon. I read and own the novel by Alan Dean Foster. But it's not Canon
@john smith
Mainly because in the deleted scene, Harry Dean Stanton was turning into an egg. That lore was later changed. Dude.. I've collected the comic books and the expanded universe material since the late 80s. I LOVE this film series.
I don't care what anyone says, the monster in this movie was AWESOME!🦂
Totally. Killer crustacean on roids! (Basically)
Better than all the other underwater monster movies for it's time. 😫🦀
I can’t believe you finally did a review of this movie. It’s one of my favorite undersea monster movies
The damaged reactor cooling system and the whole thing blowing up is also ripped off from aliens 2.
I remember seeing this movie cover all the time in the video store. Brings back memories.
Miguel should have gotten an Oscar for his "Oh Shit!" one liner. He fucking nailed it!
I had always assumed from the poster that some evil force would bring that diving suit to life, and it would be an antagonist in some way. Shame...
Ngl, when I first saw the new video, I thought for a few seconds that it was going to be a review on Leviathan.
Watched this as a kid, I thought it was pretty good.
It’s odd that civilians have direct control of nuclear armed missilery and a reactor. One would R.Lee Emery or Stacy Keach as a naval officer in charge.
I think they had one navy guy but he was not in charge.
And that movies keep having reactors explode when they actually don't
@@dragonlordthekingofdragons6373 Uh, history says otherwise, but okay.
Damn Brandon I've been binging your old vids all day ,thumbs up,d everyone .YOU ROCK
Deep Rising is one you should look into. Classic.
It's so awesome to see a fellow South African Marius Weyers in the movie. I remember when I was a kid, it was a massive thing to have a South African in a "big budget" Hollywood movie.
I love this movie. It was one of my favourites when I was a kid. Definitely the best underwater movie of 1989.
I like this 1 but what about Leviathan yo??? That’s my pick.
@@joelplatt3396 I really like Leviathan, but my fave is Deepstar Six. Have to watch this one at least once a year.
No ; Leviathan is much better than this.
It looks like Sgt Nick Lassard's second ocean related assignment involves more blood and less shenanigans than the last one.
Ah man this is a classic horror film for me & when I saw this was gonna be the next film you were doing I was very excited to see what humor you bring with this gem.
Surf Side Six!
"Who lives there?"
Surf Side Six!
"Young bachelors?"
The head scientist played Mr. Steyn in The Gods must be crazy. A favorite 80s comedy of mine.
Yeah I remember this movie when it first came out much like Leviathan one of those Aliens meets The Thing but underwater.
I thought Leviathan was a genetic experiment gone wrong?
I’d say this was a good attempt
This was a good movie. The abyss was YAWN.
Saw this in the theater along with Leviathan. Liked the latter more because of the top notch cast. Weller, Crenna, Stern, Elizondo, and the underrated Ernie Hudson.
Doesn't Ernie Hudsen also make it to the end of Leviathan, too? I can't remember.
Chimble, Master of Chimney Yeah, but that’s when he “gets it”. (Sigh...) 😔
Yup! Leviathan was the $hit, I thought any ways
I remember seeing this VHS on the racks at the video store as a kid.
he always finds the coolest shirts, i swear.
groovy
Aside from the "Parasuco" stage
Yeah! I dig the Resistance games. I love his Ash shirt he wears a lot to.
I watched this one back when it came out as a rental tape and you're right: besides the fact that it's a pretty cheap Abyss-knock-off, the one thing I do remember about it is Miguel Ferrer's death-scene.
I saw it around that time as well. (& haven’t since!) Yeah that death grossed me out as a kid. $hit it still does.
Me too.
Wasn't there a similar death in License to Kill?
Yeah that was so nasty.
@@smithwesson1896 Indeed there was but with Anthony Zerbe in a decompression chamber that time. It was censored too no less for years until the film got a unrated release finally on Blu Ray.
This cast is probably the most accomplished in Brandon's 200-plus episode library. All starred in TV shows at some point and some like Nia Peebles, was a rising star. And the one guy became iconic on Seinfeld.
Which actor was on Seinfeld? What character did he play?
Lloyd Braun. He and George sold computers out of Mr Costanza's Dad's garage! I think that was the "Serenity Now" episode.
@@tomleturgey4175 Thanks.
So before you showed the footage, I spent the entire intro trying to remember if this was the undersea horror movie with Peter Weller or undersea horror movie with the guy from Police Academy 6. This movie and Leviathan get mixed up in my memory, so I guess it makes sense they released the same year.
I do love the way that monster looks
Love it! Saw this in the theaters with my one gf. Saw Leviathan with the next. It was a good year for underwater movies.
Yup, I went to see all of the big three (this, "Leviathan" and "The Abyss") in theaters with my dad that year. I was 14. Good times.
Leviathan is my fav but The Abyss was the only one I saw on the big screen.
That must have been so awesome.
Deep Star Six and Leviathan are my favorites
Brandon: I'm surprised Jason hasn't been at the bottom of the ocean yet.
Sean Cunningham: *WRITE THAT DOWN! WRITE THAT DOWN!*
Imagine if they did that numbers joke for Zero-Dark-Thirty
That guy played Lloyd Braun in Seinfeld
Which guy exactly?! I know that character but just can’t place him.
I knew I recognized him, but it took me a while to make the connection.
SERENITY NOW!
The weirdest thing about all of these underwater movies is how many robocop actors turn up in them, from Peter Weller in Leviathan, Ray Wise in the Rift, to Miguel Ferrer in this one.
Damn, only after Miguel Ferrer death scene, I remembered that I had seen this movie, so many years ago on tv. One of the channels here did show during the afternoon several of this film genre, but also horror ones like My Bloody Valentine and Black Christmas!
"Cooped up not being able to see a movie." 🙄😒
Abyss was a pretentious snorefest- Leviathan and Deep Star Six weren’t original by most standards, but they were utter fun with brilliant casts, sets, music, and most of all- memorable monsters Xx
Thats what I feel about them... Abyss was always boring as hell to me. Yet for some reason it's often so highly praised and loved. I think it was one of those movies made by a film guy for a film guy hence why critics loved it. But I can never watch it in one sitting without turning it off or going to sleep on it.
FACT!!!
2:43 Mike: “speaking of *Star Trek,* the actor on the left was the same person who played the manipulative empath on the “wormhole for sale” episode of *Star Trek: The Next Generation.”*
It's interesting to note that Sean S. Cunningham also produced Wes Craven's debut THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (1972), and that Chris Walas also did the FX for NAKED LUNCH (1991). It's interesting to see them working together even if this collaborative effort doesn't exactly measure up to their earlier work that they each did separately. Nice sea monster and lab, though! Seriously, I would give anything to see a under-the-sea sci-fi film made nowadays that is neither MEG or AQUAMAN. If they adapt John Wyndham's novel THE KRAKEN WAKES for the big screen, I'm pre-sold!
Another classic.
Gonna have to say I really preferred Leviathan over this. Peter Weller, Richard Crenna, Ernie Hudson (who has the best line in the movie), Daniel Stern. I mean, c'mon!!
The only thing I enjoyed from Deepstar Six was Miguel Ferrer and his characters' death.
This was a frequent showing on The Sunday Afternoon Movie while I was a kid.
I saw this movie from beginning to end when I was 13, when The Movie Channel was doing that "VCR Overnight" thing where you could record movies overnight while you were asleep. I was awake because I was sick with the flu and couldn't rest. And I've watched various clips of it on RUclips (well, before they were taken down).
My favorite underwater movie from 1989 is "Leviathan." Saw it in theaters with my dad and it's still a blast to watch. Not a great movie, but still the best "Alien/Thing" rip-off there is.
"Deep Star Six" (which I also saw in theaters) is still a total guilty pleasure of mine, too, though. Mostly BECAUSE it's so goofy.
WORD UP! Leviathan is my personal fav of this genre as well! Underrated. Good plot & cast.
Agree. Abyss dragged and DS6 had too many flaws. Leviathan the creature effects are 'meh', but the cast and their chemistry made up for it.
dbsommers1 Really you found the creature effects in Leviathan as just “meh”?? I liked em, still do. But yeah great cast & I liked the story a whole lot. How about that eel-like thing just burrowing in to that 1 poor bastard?! 🤢🤮 That scene ALWAYS hits me hard! Such a $hit way to go.
The acting and effects are good, but it couldn't be any more cliche-laden.
3:06, RIP, Miguel Ferrer.
When I saw the alert for this, I went out and bought a cigar to sit on the back porch and watch the absolute SHIT out of it.
Awesome review as always! And how funny I legit watched this for the first time last night
Looking forward to Brandon’s dulcet Canadian tones interrupted 48,000 times by midroll ads nobody wanted.
I saw this in the theatre with a buddy of mine. I always thought his review was perfect: "That movie definately rode the short sub to the theatre."
Love the dramatic irony of Snyders line of "Im always under a lotta pressure" when he ultimately dies from rapid surfacing decompression
This is easily a solid 3/5. In horror and underwater sci fi genres that translates to a 4.5/5
Accurate. It's really a pretty good effort in a tiny field of competitors. You might even say a big fish in a small pond. :)
Hey, I loved this movie when I was a kid! Classic 80s schlock.
can we have 10 hours of brandon saying "gesundheit"?
great video keep up the good work!
"Leviathan" has a unreasonable cool poster.
Wow, the black guy isn't the first die in this one! He's the second!
IMO, the idea of a "black guy dies first" trope is overspecific. Its really "ethnic guy always dies".
4th, actually. Those two sub guys died first, then the Russian guy
Right on! 3 out of the last 4 (including this 1) are flicks I watched as a kid & haven’t seen since! This one was pretty entertaining & I agree not nearly as bad as many pro & amateur critics would say.
I love this whole genre of film! The claustrophobia adds so much to the tension of the movies you almost don't need a monster or villain. The environment is the main villain in every one of them!
I saw Deep Star Six at the Rialto Theater in Searcy, Arkansas. I remember it because a) the movie was pretty good actually b) one of the stars was an extra on Star Trek and another was the star of BJ and the Bear. And C) the first time I ever got to third base was with my date after this movie by the old Searcy Water Slide. Deep Star Six. What a great movie.
I rented this one on VHS. Ah, the memories...
Does this actually count as a "cult" movie?
Then again I mostly remember it from the cool box art in the video store.
The British poster was cool too
I am a big fan of it
The VHS cover with the half eaten diving suit was what piqued my interest in this film.
@@alucard624 same, but the movie is also really good
"Captain I Better Not Be The First One To Die In This Fucking Film"
😂😂😂
Easily two of the most uncomfortable deaths on screen for maaaany years. Miguel popping and the shark dart death were cringe inducing in a good way. The blood pumping out of his arms and neck were so gnarly.
Another classic. Loved this movie coming up.
Now Can You Pleases do a Review of Disney’s Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983)?
Or Mr. Boogedy
oh yes please
I'm 42. I loved this movie when i was a kid. Those chrome shotties were bad ass.
"Gesundheit" Fucking hell. You nearly broke me 🤣
This movie was crazy because most of the characters all die not from the monster but their own stupidity lol its so funny I loved it.
Mostly from someone else's stupidity, I think.
Their own or others I mean watch the movie its crazy count all the deaths of ppl not killed by the monster its insane even that last kill the monster had her and she electrocuted herself to death
@@mshake7056 the whole setup was a health and safety nightmare, and whoever was in charge was at serus fault. In particular:
* the decision to rush everything, and especially blowing up the caverns without expecting them was a recipe for trouble (even without a monster).
* crew going off and doing their own thing, without staying in touch with control, or even saying what they were doing.
* Snyder was clearly not mentally suitable for the post, and should have been removed and replaced with someone capable.
* poor maintenance (e.g. the faulty hatch that killed the captain).
* poor design of, well, everything
** Deep Star 6 clearly lacked redundant systems.
** the reactor shouldn't have been that vulnerable to damage.
** there should have been a way to destroy the missiles without detonating the warheads.
** It should be possible to launch the escape pod without flooding the base.
** It shouldn't be possible to launch it without decompressing.
** on the other hand, it probably wasn't necessary to have the base pressurised at all, because everyone stayed inside, or used rigid diving suits.
@@iapetusmccool lol yeah if you look at it that way true the movie isnt about a monster killing ppl its safety nightmare movie
@@mshake7056And really, they invaded the creatures territory and blew up its home. Wouldn't you be mad if someone did that to you? The Monster wasn't really the villain here
Is that the guy from my two dads?!
Gotta admit, Snyder seems like The Load done *well* - they're aware of just how much they're fucking up and are desperately trying not to, but just can't help but make mistake after mistake. Even his death was due to his own carelessness and ineptitude.
That little exchange about "Miss September" perfectly encapsulates the male paradigm after being isolated and deprived of nookie for months.
