      Hey Brandon! Ok, here's the deal with the monster, it assimilates the DNA of it's victims into itself, including those it bites or scratches but lets survive. This is where the psychic connection comes in. That's why the three of them can "hear" it's heartbeat when it's nearby. But it is one of those blink and you miss it types of explanations.
      Love the channel, and glad you did those movie, loved "Split Second" back in the day. Love the fact that a damn missile launcher was "too fucking small!".

    According to the wiki: "Durkin figures out that Stone escaped from it ten years ago, and it is now fixated upon killing Stone just as it previously killed Foster. In
    fact, as the movie progresses, each killing and "appearance" of the monster is an attempt to lure Stone closer and closer. The massive chest wound that Stone sustained all those years ago is what created the psychic link between Stone and the creature." So no it isn't the Devil, just some weird psychic monster. Also the bubbles at the end suggested not that it was not dead, but that there are more than one of them.

      According to the rewrites there were some plotlines about a mutated disease caused by rats. I've always thought it was someone who was likely a satanic serial killer affected by the disease and became the monster. I believe the whole scorpio thing is that the monster was trying to become a demon

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens 3 года назад +5

      Mmm, not sure about the last part. Assuming the creature isn't dead is a lot more plausible than assuming there's more than one of them, since we've gotten no hints to the latter. Also don't really see the connection between chest wounds and psychic connections (maybe if, like, a piece of the creature got lodged inside Stone's body or something?), but that's the script's problem.
      I'm surprised Terminator didn't get a mention on the list of movies this film's, uh, "homaging"; that dance club looks pretty Tech Noir to me, though I suppose that was probably true of a lot of clubs at the time. Kinda weird that they decided to tack a horoscope thing onto the "occult killer" idea, too; seems to add a lot of restrictions without much payoff. Rutger deserves better!

    Gotta post this. I've seen this film too many times, so there may be head cannon ahead... If you missed the DNA part of the plot I am not surprised as it's an idea not well integrated but a lot of the film hangs on. The creature is an amalgam of rat and human DNA, probably a side effect of the disease being spread by the rats (see the street signs and Derkins fear of rats). It gains the DNA of anyone it injures and believes that it gains the power of the person and their soul by eating their hearts. It BELIEVES it's Satan, up to the viewer if it really is. The psychic connection has nothing to do with astronomy, the Scorpio thing is part of the serial killer taunting the detective Cliche from an earlier script. It's the magical DNA (cause that's how DNA works) that gives the psychic connection first to Stone when he is injured in the underground with foster then Dirkin after his stomach is slashed and Michelle after she is bitten in the shower. The connection is why Dirkin starts to get more like Stone at the end of the film (aka "We need bigger guns" and craving coffee and chocolate). The reason Stone shoots the heart is that, it's what he could "hear" through the psychic link whenever he was near the creature. Later in the underground we see that Dirkin hears it too but mistakes it for his own heart, causing him to break down in fear, it's what caused Stones panic attacks at the start of the film. By this point Stone realizes it's the creatures heart, allowing Stone to move past the fear and giving us the films "if it bleeds we can shoot it" moment. Shooting the heart is symbolic of the end to the nightmare as Stone had heard the sound of the heart, more than seen the enemy. Personally I saw this film on VHS as part of a double bill with the another Rutger Hauer film "Wedlock" I always had to fast forward through wedlock to watch Split Second

      Yeah, that's all a pretty understandable interpretation of the text of the film. I'd also accept something very, very similar but involving the word "alien". This is something of a pet peeve of mine with "Bad Movie" Channels like this one; it's more than fine to call a movie like this confusing. I mean, when you're someone just watching a movie, it isn't really your job to put in a lot of effort to understand what's going on in it and forcing you to (especially at this level where all I can really call this is an 'interpretation' because it isn't really concrete) is a very real flaw. When you retell the plot of movies to tepid jokes for a living, though, it kind of Is your job, and not even trying like this and just treating everything that isn't super explicit about what's going on as wild and incoherent does a disservice to the film and your own credibility.
