This movie is a story straight outta Heavy Metal magazine.
Ivan Reitman produced this film along with "Heavy Metal: The Movie".
Harold Ramis also did some voice work in Heavy Metal.
Except the movie should have been R-rated to fulfill it's Heavy Metal potential.
Michael Ironsides played the villain in Heavy Metal 2000.
2 of the writers also worked on the "HEAVY METAL" movie. It looks and feels like something from the magazine... and Elmer Bernstein did the music!! I'm watching a sci-fi movie marathon right now, and I actually wound up enjoying this MORE than "RETURN OF THE JEDI". Who'da thunk it? My best friend and I did see this the weekend it came out. I've liked Molly Ringwald ever since seeng this. I've always suspected her character in this was based on "Nikki" from the Steve Gerber-Al Milgrom run of "GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY".
the quality of this bluray is impressive, i honestly thought this was a 90s movie by how crispy clear it looks
One of the few times upgrading a film that was never shot in HD to HD quality looks damn good.

Terrific! This is one of my guilty pleasures - Michael Ironside, mad '3D' effects and bloated maggot pod people. What's not to love?
I saw this when it came out in theaters. The 3D was really over the top, especially Overdog's weapon all up in your face. It was overdone is such a way that made the cheesiness excusable, actually a pretty good watch.
It's a shame no one will do a 3d bluray, since the tech is dying in the home market
I watched this over and over on HBO as a kid. Recently watched it on crackle. It was good and odd.

This film has one of my favourite lines, "I tried maintenance procedure one." to which the android reply's "arr, you kicked it."
It has one of my favourites too - "Why can't anything be simple anymore?"

@TheGreaterGood80 I prefer the former versus the latter. The latter completely destroyed a franchise that didn't even need to BE a franchise for that matter. I miss cheesy B movies that had a lot of heart and effort put into them with a low budget.

When I think of the 1980's, I think of "dressy" sweat pants, the booming snare drum in every song and schlocky 3-D movies like this.

I remember watching this on HBO on Saturday morning. I like the villain, the set-pieces, and Ernie Hudson's character. However, I was baffled as to why they killed the robot after just getting hit buy one laser

I swear every movie this guy does has someone in the comment section go "I saw this on HBO back in the 80s/90s". I grew up in the 2000s and it was the same story for me.
How many times did I watch this one on cable growing up? Far, far too many. Still one of my all-time favorite guilty pleasures!
Oh man, I always loved this movie as a kid! Watched it just a few months ago and... it doesn't hold up, lol! But it was still fun. Seeing these actors so many years later and knowing their other roles is very cool. (I'm looking at you Ernie Hudson and Michael Ironside!)
Interesting, Ernie and Michael did appear in an episode of "The A-Team" around the time this film came out.
I was 12 yrs old when I saw the non 3d version in 1983 and still enjoy it today. I wonder if the sequel to Cameron's Avatar will revitalize the 3d craze again.
I doubt it: it seems unlikely that lightning can strike twice and it's natural that 3D returned in late 2000's to 2010's, since crazes kinda go in thirty-years cycles.
The only reason to watch a 3D movie in the 80s
was to turn around in the darkened cinema and laugh at a whole room fulla ppl all looking like proper twonks in their cardboard glasses 🤣

This was one of my favourite films as a kid. Michael Ironside is great.
He's always reliable as a villain, and the more over the top the character, the better he plays him. I saw an interview once where he said he would rather play the bad guy because you have so much latitude for performance. If you play the hero, you are constrained by the way that the audience expects a good guy to behave, but as a vilain, you have an open invitation to be as insane as you you like :)
This is why I love this channel. I had never heard of this movie but so many big stars were involved! Plus I was just telling a friend to watch Turbo Kid yesterday. Lol
okay this has been one of those unicorn films i never seem to recall. For some reason i was allowed to watch this all the times as a kid when my grandparents watched me on their VHS player, and i could never remember anything besides the annoying girl and the strange car. I literally spent hours looking through lists to find it.
Ironside, Hudson, and that awesome desert pirate ship? Count me in.
Saw this movie many years ago and also Hell Comes To Frogtown around the same time. For the longest of time my mind spliced them together and my memory recalled them as one movie.
LOVED your inclusion of the stinger at the end. Friggin hilarious, classic way to end videos! Also I'm gonna have to track this movie down and give it a watch, looks really enjoyable according to our standards!

I always thought it was a little more derivative or the road warrior

I knew the cinematographer for this film Frank Tidy he was a great guy with lots of stories about the movie industry. When I met him for the first time he mentioned that he worked on this film and a few others like The Duellists and I told him that Spacehunter was one of my favourite films he was quite surprise that I had watched the movie.

It's pleasant to see that, aside from occasional slips here and there, people actually made an effort when making this movie. They were trying to make something decent and it shows.

I remember this movie fondly. It was cheesy as hell, but you could tell that a lot of heart went into it. Ringwald's character was ACTUALLY what they intended, a spunky yet endearing character, instead of just an annoying stupid kid, as so often happens. The ol' adventure trope of heroes drifting from crazy encounter to crazy encounter until they reach the bad guy was done well here. I need to watch this one again.
(Also, the dig at Fallout '76 was pretty damn funny!)

I saw this movie in the theater - TWICE! - in 3D on the original release. It's a major favorite of my youth, and holds up today to most of the '80's Sci-Fi/Westerns. Thanks for covering it.

Turbo Kid gets a shout out
Of all the films ever to contain Michael Ironside, BMX bikes and Gnome Sticks - Turbo Kid was the best
I saw it in the theaters, in 3D. I was good fun schlock back then and is now. Now many people appreciate it.

I remember Leonard Nimoy covering the making of this on his old Nickelodeon show, "Lights, Camera, Action." Caught a few minutes of a TV-edit of this years later, and recognized Archangel's assistant from "Airwolf" (Troian Bellisario's future mother) was one of the three captured women Wolff had to rescue.
*Fun Fact:* The Oingo Boingo song 'Forbidden Zone' was the basis for the Dilbert theme.

So this movie is kinda the idea of the making of "Stargate" since both are explorating new planets . Michael Ironside most underrated actor . He's really excellent in whatever role he plays ( Scanners , V tv-show , Starship Troopers to name a few )
There is some really great Production Design in the film . Really cool

The fat monsters were supposed to be bat monsters but there was a typo. Stan Winston went with fat and the director loved it. True story.
I saw this in a theater when it came out (I'm wicked old). I remember the audience laughing at the unintentional humor of the dialog at a few points. ("We have blood loss here!") Also, both Ringwald's voice and her character were like fingernails on a blackboard.

You can see why Moly Ringwald became such a star after this, with those acting chops.

I saw it in 3D when it came out. All I remember was the part where there was a closeup on the main character while he was driving his vehicle and it was like his face was right in front of you in the theater. I'm going to have to watch it again.
ive been waiting for this one for months, bravo. one of my alltime faves. i had this, hell comes to frog town, howard the duck and split second on v.h.s copies and wore them all out. obviously over a span of years, god i loved those years.
