Spacehunter is one of my favorite Star Wars "knockoffs " and it is great. Seriously cheesy but fun.

I loved this movie back then... I need to rewatch. BTW, Michael Ironside as the bad guy is always a good thing.

Spacehunter was a movie I grew up watching and I still love it to this day... But, to be fair, you made a very accurate review. Spacehunter was little more than a cheesy run-off of Star Wars. I don't watch it for the film quality, but rather, I watch it because it reminds me of the days when things were far more simple and less politically correct (in sci-fi and in real life).
Thank you for your review of Spacehunter. I voted like and subscribed to you. :)

"SPACEHUNTER was originally released in 3D-" In case you couldn't tell!
I don't know if you got SCTV in the UK, but they used to have Joe Flaherty play a late-night horror host, "Count Floyd", and on several occasions he'd show "a sca-ry! 3D movie!", usually starring John Candy's "Doctor Tongue". They'd simulate 3D effects by shoving objects at the camera three times, as the same ominous music played....

I loved watching this, but in a way, I don't agree with ridiculing it. I thought it was a super creepy movie when I was a kid in the 80s. I think that this was the actual intention -- to show the creepy and surreal future the 80s would create. After all, this is how Nirvana was created.

There was a spate of 3D movies turned out, mostly by low-budget outfits like Empire Pictures, Filmways (the same company that produced THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES, PETTICOAT JUNCTION and GREEN ACRES), and Cannon Film Distributors. SPACEHUNTER: ADVENTURES IN THE FORBIDDEN ZONE had a relatively lavish $12M (or $14M, depending on the source); an up-and-coming cast starring Peter Strauss (he was the male lead in several miniseries from the mid-Seventies through early Eighties), Molly Ringwald (who was fifteen when she did this!), Michael Ironside (who always does a great job as a baddie), and a pre-GHOSTBUSTERS Ernie Hudson; and was directed by Lamont Johnson, who was trying to break out of prestige television into movies.
I know a lot of people here saw it as a kid and loved it, but I wondered at the time "Who's this movie's audience?" It's got too many "Mature" themes for preteens (like the relationship between thirty-six year old Peter Strauss and fifteen year old Molly Ringwald!), it's not exciting or thrilling enough for adults (I was twenty-six when it came out, and it thoroughly disappointed me, my then-girlfriend, and our friends who went to see a for-real 3D movie), and teens won't enjoy it because it doesn't have enough sex or violence for their "grown-up" tastes and as a female lead gives you "little kid" Molly Ringwald!

A movie with Molly Ringwald and I have no memory of it. Weird. Also, aspects of the sets and costumes make me think of director Terry Gilliam.

Much less Star Wars and more Mad Max in space. And I think the 3D was tacked on late in the production of the movie. It was originally suppose to be 2D. Not great cinema, and the movie has its problems, but it was no way a terrible movie. Much, much better than Metalstorm.

Fun review. In the '80s there was a move from the Hawkeye Pierce like leading men to Conan the Barbarian leading men. Granted the audience was more targeted.

It really isn't that bad of a movie. Certainly the best of the 1980s 3D movies. The 3D effects might've sucked, but it was an overall good movie.

i saw this review in the morning because youtube recommended to me...after that i searched and found the movie online....IT WAS FUCKING AWESOME
what the hell?? , i mean the Not-Han solo guy has a pretty sweet character arc , there is NO romantic interest (which is very weird in this type of movies) AND even though hes a dick and deals with foes with relative ease HE IS a very coward individual, he gets scared easily and hes to dumb to accept it and thats what made him likable. if you want an asshole who can beat anyone and hes a dick about it go watch fast and furious movies.
i dont think its fair to compared it so hard to star wars even though it tried to cash in on starwars in the same month i think??
for every starwars knock off element there was a good innovation either on creature design, set design, plot elements, map paintings, cgi, action, world building (more like atmosphere because this world makes little to no sense in the good way)... it was more of a sci fi mad max movie than a star wars movie.
so i dont think its a knock off movie of starwars, i think it only tried to cash in on the Space adventure fever that starwars impulsed and thats VERY different . its like saying avengers is a knock off of xmen because its about a group of extraordinary people who fight against a bad guy who was friends with one of the good guys team and it came out the same year a sequel of xmen came out (i think thats not true but you get the point XD)

Lol. It could have worked with proper pacing, no annoying Ringwald, among other things - as a popcorn flick, that is. Still, it's better than it's poor step-brother METALSTORM: THE DESTRUCTION OF JARED-SYN (also '83, and in 3-D).

THIS movie reminds me more of the Sci Fi TV show " Firefly "
Hmmm, how did the Water Women get their hands on Reptilicus dragon.
@ 00:40 seconds in that huge fat creature reminds me so much of the Fat Scott's Man from the Austin Power's movie and also there was a huge obese Vampire with folds of fat in the first Blade vampire movie who lived inside a vault ? guarding the evil vampires' records.
LOL so the Black character is suppose to be Chewbacca ? :)

Hey reviewers, did you not get that this is a comedy????? Really???? No sense of humor indicates lack of intelligence. This movie is 8 of 10 if you get the spoofs. Very funny. One of my better movies. Entertaining. But then, I actually get jokes. And laugh. Good sound and music too. Try it out folks. Good movie. Reviewers - get a life.
