This film has easily the most accurate depiction of British soldiers (the regulars, not the bullshit special unit) in any film ever. The British Army are fantastic lads to work alongside, I'd rather have them alongside me in a fight than anyone else. Also, your crack about killing animals during training is accurate. British Forces ARE trained to kill small animals, for sustenance.
The sense of humour is very accurate. I once talked to a Padre who told me about a conversation he'd had with some 2 Para who had been at Goose Green: 4 mates had fought through a particular position, but only 3 survived. After the battle, the three went back to check the position and found their mate's body. They stood in silence for a few seconds looking down at him, and then one remarked, "That'll teach him to fart in church."
@tomsdottir The Padre at HMS Raleigh told us a story about a lad who he was asked to give last rights to, and he was a mess of barely attached limbs, blood and gore. Padre started talking to the lad, who burst out laughing, before saying "Ey! Sir! I'm the flag of the Isle of Man...with bollocks!!!" before dying shortly after.

Dog Soldiers is basically a British version of "Predator" - confident soldiers go on a mission, only to find the genre of the movie has changed on them. It actually ranks pretty high on my list of favorite movies.

One of the best werewolf movies ever made. The newspaper report at the end was a nod to the trashy British newspapers like The Daily Sport. In the late 80s and 90s they would often have stories like, "I slept with a vampire" or "An alien stole my baby" and other ludicrous headlines that everyone just laughed at and ignored.
I remember seeing this when it premiered on the SciFi channel and all I could think was, "Finally, werewolves that look and feel awesome and terrifying."

17:27 the werewolf that knocks the lighter out of the sarges hand is actually Megan because it's missing an eye, kind of hard to tell that she got shot in the eye
I love how the movie kinda gives the idea that werewolves can be killed with regular bullets and blades, but they have a healing factor that makes it harder to do so. Which also allows the effect of silver to make sense, as you see it actually burn them like they are allergic to the metal. Kinda like how in Marvel the metal carbonatium is used on people with healing factors, because it nullifies that ability so it would be like a wound that would have to be healed normally or through medical interference.
A twat is the dictionary term for a pregnant fish, but is used as an insult much like cunt is used elsewhere, as cunt is also used as a term of affection amongst mates.
I read that Marshall didn't want to make a werewolf movie with soldiers; he wanted to make a soldier movie with werewolves. He succeeded, I think: it's really the banter between the soldiers that helps to set this one apart.
A great what I'd call "B+ movie". Used to be a favourite of mine in my early teens. First time I've seen that artwork though, makes the film look a lot tackier than the UK DVD art (Same as the one that's used on Rotten Tomatoes for those curious).
One of my all time favourite movies. Thanks for showcasing it. A sequel? Tricky to see it happen and still have the magic of the original, but I'd give it a go.
YES. This is my favorite werewolf film. So many werewolf films seem more focused on the special effects but less thought is given to the story and character work (which is why I kinda like Silver Bullet despite its shortcomings, and I still gotta see Wolfen and Ginger Snaps, I heard good things about those). And it's impressive how much it stands on its own despite borrowing plot elements from so many other films, in the hands of a different director and crew this might've failed spectacularly, which is why it's a miracle. As for some of the questions you asked, I always assumed Megan got bitten in the hand during one of the attacks (I remember seeing the camera focusing on her hand in one small bit) and was simply always fascinated with them and finally got the chance to join them. I also think the werewolves in this film have similar rules to the ones from The Howling, in that silver AND fire can kill them. Tho, it appears as if getting a headshot is also sufficient enough, but you can always headcanon that Megan turned into a werewolf despite getting shot and died in the later explosion, and the silver letter opener wounded Ryan enough and Cooper shooting him in the head was simple satisfying overkill. There, Cooper shot the dog now, asshole.
I absolutely love this movie. Spoon is my favorite character. That man literally goes hand to hand survival mode on a Werewolf. It's one of my all-time favorites.
@@TheEnigmaticBM39 There’s a scene in the film where they show all 3 of the costumes & they modified 1 where her shot out eye is visible for a couple seconds at the final Werewolf fight.

Watched this at the cinema in England. Absolutely brilliant. The Spoony actor plays a rebel that gets killed in that salt planet battle in Last jedi. I still hold hope that he comes back as a Geordie force ghost.
I think although Silver either acts as a poison or the only weapon capable of wounding werewolves, I'm pretty sure ANY semi-immortal being can be killed by doing enough damage to the body, decapitation, disemboweling, burning, or even inflicting enough injury to cause it to loose enough of its blood that it can't heal anymore could do the job, think a war of attrition against a rapidly healing body. As for why the woman was a werewolf the whole time but held off her transformation until it was dramatically convenient, I think there is an accepted part of the lore where some high level ones are able to control their transformation at will, though the phases of the moon still affect how strong they can be, but I don't think they established that rule.

Ok, not going to lie,
I DEFINITELY wasn't expecting you to make a review on this
Kevin McKidd will always be best known here for playing Tommy in Trainspotting.
Tommy!
He’s also soap mctavish in cod
Yep - when i watched that movie Tommy scared me straight!
@@dawnatkinson7704 I wish that Trainspotting had that effect on me. I was clubbing and raving with the fun stuff when that came out. It was later 2000/2001 on that I started smoking heroin on a comedown. That led to a year battle of using-clean-using. I've lost untold friends like Tommy. Clean several years now.
I frickin' *LOVE* this movie! With the exception of "Howling 4," this is my absolute favorite werewolf movie. _We'll never forget you Spoonie!_
"there is no spoon"
I was introduced to this movie by some British Soldiers, while we were deployed to Iraq.
This movie had the most terrifying Werewolves ever put to screen. *Change my mind.*
American Werewolf In London might be a competitor but I’m tempted to agree
Bad Moon. Most badass werewolf ever👍
Nope The Howling did, that's why this film copied their design.
as much as i loved the Werewolves in Dog Soldiers i'd say the one briefly seen in Cabin In The Woods is more terryfying due to it being more realistic.
@DarkBullet 32 goodness gracious me.
Dog Soldiers, ah good times.
Also brings back memories of Sci-Fi channel horror movie marathons right before they went to shit:
4:00 pm Dog Soldiers
6:00 pm Frankinfish vs Zombie Elvis
8:00 pm Dog Soldiers
10:00 pm Mega-Sharktapus vs Robo-Lassie
Midnight: Dog soldiers
You missed two classic lines in this movie. "Fetch!" and Megan's last words before changing "It's that time of the month".
And when sarg loses his guts we get, "put them back in", "I'm trying but they don't fuckin' fit" lol.
"Hey look sausages" is another one
I thought this movie was bloody enough
Considering that Cooper's actor is the same man who provided the voice for Soap MacTavish in the Call of Duty games, i believe Dog Soldiers is the canonical answer to the question "How'd a muppet like you pass Selection?".
(hint they made some nice DOG SOLDIERS wolfie figures, they are still out there, if your so inclined to such trappings.) (cast iron skillet accessory, not included.)
Still got mine in the box
@@ghostface320 the wise choice. i did in turn make a iron skillet and and and a hot dog, bun and all for them to hold (please take a moment to look at yours, the hand placement and the open mouth is exceptionally geared for hot dog consumption.. just right up to the mouth in pantomime of the very act... (sadly no pics, mine is packed away in the toy treasure vaults)
I loved those figures! I got two of them!
one day I hope you cover Gingersnaps, that’s another werewolf movie with a cult following!
And questionable sequels...
I have to watch it again. I really didn't like it when I watched it years ago. I can't remember why I didn't but I was quite young at the time so I want to give it another go
Absolutely!!!!!!!!!!
FUUUUUUUUCK no. The Werewolf sucks in that one. Bad and Bald and Quadruped. No thanks. The story and plot rock but the Werewolf is disappointing, much like Late Phases...
@@Welsh_Dragon756 I didn't care for it the first time I saw it, either. But watching it a second time with a different group of people, I could kind of ignore the weird choice for the werewolf design and just appreciate the story and the acting. Ginger Snaps is now one of my favorites. Howl is another good one with a werewolf that has a bit of an odd design.
Werewolves in Scotland Meet The Predator plus a lot of hunters become the hunted 80s and 90s movies.
This is easily one of my favorite horror movies and one of my go to movies. The cast, the violence, the comedy and the werewolves are all top tier
This is one of my favourite films of all time. Great characters, doesn't take itself too seriously but at the same time a lot of love and effort put into it. A lot of great moments and great lines. Sean Pertwee's speech is up there with Quint in Jaws and Al Powel in Die Hard. The Cast commentary on the DVD is so much fun. Thanks for the Review BT.
A favorite of mine. The full body costumes were pretty exceptional especially for the budget
Now I know what Soap Mactavish was doing before he joined the S.A.S and met Captain Price
I guess that’s how a muppet like him passes through selection
I am so happy to see Brandon reviewing this . This is one of those movies I've always thought he would have already reviewed and yet hadn't up until know. Also I never knew the guy who did dog soldiers also went on to do centurion! Do my favorite movies by the same director.
One of the absolute best werewolf films easily on par with other greats like an American Werewolf in London, and The Howling
Dog Soldiers was easily my favorite werewolf movie of all time, memorable characters, fast action, great practical effects, I would LOVE to see a sequel made
Kevin McKidd played Lucius Vorenus (Rome) & Liam Cunningham played Davos Seaworth (Game of Thrones) are in this film? Bloody nice!
Dog Soldiers is basically a British version of "Predator" - confident soldiers go on a mission, only to find the genre of the movie has changed on them. It actually ranks pretty high on my list of favorite movies.
I actually said out loud to myself....
Where the hell is my boy with canadian awesome film reviews?
And here you are.
“You’re no typical soldier, your line reading is way too dramatic!”🤣🤣
Yeah, great film from a time where it seemed for a moment that Britain could be a cool little factory for genre films. But hey ho, least we got what we got.
And no, no sequel please.
Side note: most people also know him as "Soap" MacTavish from the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series
3:44, Sean Pertwee from GOTHAM and Event Horizon! Another reason to watch this movie.
He’s also radec in killzone 2
You should also watch HOWL
he's also the son of the guy who played the Third Doctor
One of my favorite werewolf movies.
1. Dog Soldiers
2. Bad Moon
3. Trick ‘r Treat/Ginger Snaps 2
Man, I love your channel and I love this film, I never expected you talking about Dog Soldiers tho.
What a wonderful surprise for international men's day.
Up there with American Werewolf in London and Howling as the top three Werewolf movies.
It's a land rover. Not a jeep
a land ROVER seems fitting for Dog Soldiers.
@atd8vii I get it. Maybe the original script called for .303s.
@@10GaugeManiac I get it.
Well, now we know what Alfred was doing in Special Forces before moving to Gotham and becoming a badass butler.
This movie scared the hell put of me when I was a kid! Best looking Werewolves except for Bad Moon🌙 just my opinion tho❤
Totally agree bud 👍
It's great, they totally copied the design of the werewolves from The Howling tho.
I always liked the werewolf design in Van Helsing with Hugh Jackman. I know its not a horror movie but still.
@@scottneil1187 not even
I agree! One of the costumes sold at auction (I totally missed it) for like $1000 (I believe). I would have bought one if I knew.
*sees Brandon do a review of Dog Soldiers. Proceeds to smash my way through everything in order to watch* Finally! A cult classic I actually rented!!
I remember seeing this when it premiered on the SciFi channel and all I could think was, "Finally, werewolves that look and feel awesome and terrifying."
Sean pertwee was in another low budget, and pretty decent, werewolf movie called Howl
Great little film, needs more fans.
Sean: "I was also in Howl."
Me: "Howl...ing?"
Sean: "Just Howl."
Me: "So you in the Howl."
Sean: "Right."
Me: "The Howl...ing?"
Sean: "Shut yer trap, you talky nose twat."
...really...? howl came that...? 😋
Unfortunately, he didn't last very long in that one!
@@ronstreet6706 slightly longer than that deer
I remember actually seeing that premiere on the Sci-fi channel for this movie. Good times. Great memories.
Toffee -nosed means posh, it's a popular description over here in the UK for the upper class or rich, toff comes from it.
So glad you reviewed this movie, its one of my favorite movies.
Dead Snow. Suburbia. Chopper Chicks and the Slime Ball Bowl-o-Rama. Deadtime stories. Hell comes to Frogtown. Freaks(German AND Alex Winter version). Waxwork 1&2.... And... Castle freak. I can't afford patron bc Rona is fucking my day up but there u go man. Enjoy.
Chopper chicks in zombie Town! 🤣🤣🤣..I haven't seen that for about 15 yrs.lol
I don't know why they haven't made a sequel to this movie? I got it on DVD when it first made it to the states. It's by far one of the better werewolf movies out there,
Hey that's Sean Partwee the son of Jon Partwee aka The 3rd Doctor from Doctor Who.
If not for Tom Baker, Pertwee would've been my favorite Doctor. 2nd place isn't bad though.
He looks and sounds so much like his dad, when I first saw this I said, "So THAT'S what the Third Doctor cursing would sound like."
17:27 the werewolf that knocks the lighter out of the sarges hand is actually Megan because it's missing an eye, kind of hard to tell that she got shot in the eye
I’m still waiting for the review of Lady Snowblood 2 😂
I love how the movie kinda gives the idea that werewolves can be killed with regular bullets and blades, but they have a healing factor that makes it harder to do so. Which also allows the effect of silver to make sense, as you see it actually burn them like they are allergic to the metal. Kinda like how in Marvel the metal carbonatium is used on people with healing factors, because it nullifies that ability so it would be like a wound that would have to be healed normally or through medical interference.
The perfect name for the sequel would be "Dog Face Pony Soldiers".
As a non english speaker, I find "bollocks" more satisfying than BS.
This Movie is totally not BONE (if no one gets that reference your not true fans)
Bone, Bad. Not very good.
O shut up lol
@Pedro Sepulveda That's a line from the movie
I get it
It's a bezzer film!
The drunken cast commentary on the DVD was awesome!
"Toffee-nosed" means upper-class, posh, snobbish.
"Twat" rhymes with rat, not with rot.
I always took toffee nosed as brown noser
Americans always seem to pronounce it ''twot'' for some reason.
@@darkwoods1954 Yeah...like that mockney from The Boys.
@@fenrismarrodane3289 No definitely posh snob.
Yeah, basically only one character survived.
I remember going to the Seattle premier of this movie. Great film.
I think sarge is gonna make it, so he can rescue the event horizon.
i love the thumbnail art for this one
"Werewolves ate my platoon" 😆 I ❤ this movie.
I absolutely love this movie. Spoon is my favorite character. That man literally goes hand to hand survival mode on a Werewolf. It's one of my all-time favorites.
I've never heard of this film prior to the review but I love it. I immediately got on Amazon to purchase the dvd. Thanks
I got the DVD as soon as it came out. Really good, fun film.
At 19:49 you can see the rifle has the muzzle-blocker still on! LMAO...
Fun fact:
Megan is briefly seen in her werewolf form with her eye still having being blown out.
Where?
@@TheEnigmaticBM39 There’s a scene in the film where they show all 3 of the costumes & they modified 1 where her shot out eye is visible for a couple seconds at the final Werewolf fight.
She is also the Werewolf that Smacks the lighter out of the hands of the Sergeant.
I just watched Marc Martel doing a cover for “Under Pressure” and couldn’t stop thinking how he looks a little like Brandon and as I’m dreaming up a collaboration where Tenold plays bass in their next cover I decide to check on the channel and he just dropped this video two hours before. The wonders never cease.
SGT Wells is played by Gotham’s Alfred Pennyworth, Sean Pertwee, son of the 3rd Doctor, John Pertwee! Awesomeness.
he was also in 7 days to live with Amanda Plummer
Watched this at the cinema in England. Absolutely brilliant. The Spoony actor plays a rebel that gets killed in that salt planet battle in Last jedi. I still hold hope that he comes back as a Geordie force ghost.
You had me at practical effects let alone werewolves!
and i cant find it anywhere
The jokes and references are spot-on in this review. Great work.
DarksydePhil?
Phil you make me angry Phil! Not a reference I was expecting on this channel of all places.
There was nothing he could do!

I think they showed it as silver makes them vulnerable to harm, similar to Underworld.
