    Rolling Thunder
    I saw you first late late at night
    You were there giving me fright
    I jumped in to the station
    and scared i read the info for evacuation
    Then i seated myself in to those glory seats
    and i found myself having terrible heart beats
    The chain lift went up but i was tryng to go down
    But at the same time i wanted to drown (In emotions)
    Then i went on a jurney from space and time

    It always saddened me that this ride was removed. It was my first "big kid" coaster after graduating from Blackbeard's Treasure Train (Now Harley Quinn's Crazy Train). It was a walk-on by 2013 so from a business perspective it does make sense they'd remove it, especially if it was expensive to maintain. It's nowhere near as intense as its neighbor El Toro but I think it could have been easily converted into a milder RMC for families.

      Same here, this was my next step after runaway mine train.... I'm not sure it was the same visit, I might have done the runaway train in '92 and this in '93 at ages 8 and 9.... but I have treasured memories of both. I remember my mom 7sing the restroom or going to the lockers, and my dad must have been scared of roller coasters, cause he didn't want to go on it with me, so he let me get on line by myself... a little while later my dad calls out to me a little ways back in the queue, cause my mom gave him hell for letting me go on alone haha. I didn't go back in queue to be with him, but I think we ended up on the same train anyway, but that was hilarious and just like my dad to let me do things on my own while my mom was more protective.
      Anyhow, at that time, I was simultaneously scared of drops on ride and those butterflies in the stomach feeling, as well as an obsessive urge to go on "big boy" rides like scream machine and the new Batman. And while I wasn't even tall enough to go on those rides this visit, Rolling Thunder was an important step for me and helped me confront that fear.... that first drop was intense but so much fun! My next visit was a couple years later, and thats when I finally got to ride all those rides I had obsessed over - Scream Machine, Batman, and the brand new Chiller.
      Basically some of the best memories of my childhood were early and mid 90s visits to Great Adventure. Just overwhelming nostalgia.

    • @RB01.10
      @RB01.10 3 года назад +2

      Eventually though, waning popularity usually means the ride will be demolished. Add to the fact it was over 30 years old which is long for a coaster.
      And if it’s hard to get parts anymore, then that further increases the chances of its demolition.

    • @mhtube01
      @mhtube01 2 года назад +4

      @@RB01.10 The thing is, wooden coasters are designed to be sustainable. Unlike steel coasters which wear and fatigue after years of use, wooden coasters can be retracted for a fraction of the cost. This coaster would have maintained higher popularity if Six Flags had bothered to maintain it from the get go. It was less than 1/3 the age of some of the oldest wooden coasters out there still in operation and running better than RT did. Look at Comet at Hersheypark. Built in 1946, it's the oldest coaster in the park and still runs excellent, which is why it's hugely popular, especially with families. Rolling Thunder ran PTC trains, a company that's still around today, so the park could have refurbished them easily or just replaced them. Plus wooden track can be replaced by the park themselves or they could have brought in a company like GCI or Gravity Group to retrack it. It could still be around today no problem if they had done so, but this is Six Flags....

I loved it and have a core memory with an old friend of riding it together at night and laughing like crazy as we were thrown all over the place, having the time of our lives. It's a bummer to see it gone now, especially under the BS excuse to "make room" for a drop ride attached to another coaster that doesn't occupy any of the space Rolling Thunder once sat on. They even adapted El Toro around it. I get that it was old, but man, it was a good time.

      +sixflagsfan1113 they took rolling Thunder away because of how old it is it would be over 20 years old but I do agree it is better than el Diablo

    I was stuck on this coaster 40 years ago when the lap bar wouldn't release; so went for another 6 trips before they cut my car out and pushed it into a side track. A mechanic removed the bar in 5 seconds.

    I remember getting on this coaster with my uncle in the early to mid 90's at Six Flags Great America (Gurnee, IL) seeing this video brings back memories of it because I don't believe it is there anymore. Good memories tho nonetheless.

    Rolling Thunder is an amazing ride, Sure, it is bumpy but that's what you get from an older ride - especially a wooden one! The line usually isn't too long for the right side, because the left is much better, but is also usually closed.
    Six Flags Great Adventure opens in just 3 days, if you are going then - good luck! Every line will be outrageously long.

    They should've have had RMC come in and do their thang ("thing" spelled wrong on purpose). They tried to make up for it with El Diablo, which, well, just no. But now The Joker, and I don't know if it's better than Rolling Thunder.

    my friend Jen says they probably will just junk it and not sell it! the thingy on their website says to be sure to tackle it before it SLIPS INTO HISTORY so that probably means they will implode it and not save it UNFORTUNATELY since this is and always will be my favorite wooden coaster
