  • Colossus had been reprofiled several times since it opened, with the most significant one coming just a year after it opened in 1979. The last change was done in 1991 to the pair of camelback hills on the parking lot side. However, those changes were nothing compared to what was to come. In 2014 the coaster was closed and deconstructed for an RMC (Rocky Mountain Construction) Iron Horse conversion from an all wooden to a steel hybrid coaster called Twisted Colossus, which opened in 2015.
    You can also watch the Twisted Colossus on-ride POV video we posted to see what this thrilling coaster looks like after the conversion: • Twisted Colossus front...

      @@Jayx00x This version of the ride was a shell of the original. That mid course brake run was a double down (I think) for many years that launched people out of their seats. Six Flags flattened it out and murdered the speed of the rest of the ride in the process in 1991. I believe they wanted to turn it into a block zone and get rid of the "excessive air time." You can find old pictures of the original layout online, it looked awesome.
      Had this coaster lived at a different park or Six Flags didn't own Magic Mountain, the "upgrades" they did to it over the years may never have happened and it could still be a star attraction today.

      @@Jayx00x I never rode it either and I agree this version does look pretty boring. It had gotten rough over the years too and the paint was chipped too. I was just saying the original layout was a much different animal than this video portrays the ride to be. It left a lot to be desired before being converted to Twisted Colossus. Now it still had a more basic out and back layout but the original had a lot more speed and looked much more thrilling. Plus it raced back then so it had that going for it. It's too bad Six Flags just let it go and made changes for the worse in their typical fashion.

    Colossus was my first "big coaster" when I was just 7 years old. I have so many good memories of this ride during many different phases in my life. Memories of marathoning it with my big brother and sister and mom, especially when the lines would be super short or non-existent lol. Sooo much fun. One time we even convinced the operator to just send us through again without making us get off, because there was literally NO ONE waiting to ride behind us, and we were already strapped in. Sooooo much fun! And it was a night ride! What's crazy is I've been on the ride when the queues would be super long, and I've also had days where we could marathon the hell out of it. Middle school, we took trips to Six Flags on several occasions and again, my friends and I would marathon it late in the day.
    Then in high school, same. Then, as a young adult, same. Got to ride it backwards at least once. That was... different lol. But it was fun. Also remember the rare times that both sides would be running and made sure I got the chance to ride the other side a few times. And of course the times where we'd get to race side by side! Such a treat since it was such a rare occurrence in its much later years.
    As an adult now in my mid-30s, I got a chance to finally ride Twisted Colossus, and while it's a cool coaster, I still hold so much sentimental value to the original Colossus. I cried today when talking to my daughter about it. Just happened out of nowhere.. it's something she will never get to experience unfortunately since by the time she became big enough to ride coasters, it was already gone. 😔 She has ridden Twisted Colossus too, but it's just not the same experience since she has nothing to really compare it to.
    Like, I do like Twisted Colossus and I welcome it to my home park. I just really get emotional when I think back to the ride that was such a big part of my childhood, adolescence, and young adult life. This month made my first time ever back on a coaster after a 12 or 13 year hiatus. I don't know if the coasters hit differently now due to me being a bit older, or if it's just me needing to get broken in with coasters again in general, but so much happened in those 12-13 years, including Colossus being removed and replaced.
    I remember wanting to get down there with other fans to marathon Colossus one last time before they removed it, but unfortunately couldn't make it at the time. I lost my grandmother during that same year and was dealing with that.
    While I do welcome the newer one, I still think back to this one a lot. Always thinking of ways they could have salvaged it. Should have been registered as a landmark, much like they did the old Coney Island Cyclone coaster. Gotta learn to hold to our prescious pieces of coaster history. Makes me wonder what the fate will be for Viper in the coming years. It's arguably solidified its place in the park, now that it's a 31yr old coaster. I first rode that one when it had only been in the park for 5yrs. Just hope we can preserve it; maybe update it with new paint and trains, maybe add softer overhead restraints since they are a bit hard, and whatever maintenance can be done to the tracks, to keep it around. Revolution is still going pretty strong too, although I've heard changes have been made to that one also. It was closed the last couple times I was there this month, but they finally opened it like 11 minutes before the park was scheduled to close which was pretty hilarious lol. I always make it a point to ride Viper and Revolution whenever I visit, as well as Colossus. Gold Rusher is still cool too but haven't rode it in years. But I usually always make it a point to ride the classic coasters on my visits before getting on to the newer stuff. So it's sad to see that one of our beloved got taken away from us.
    Anyway, say all that to say, thanks for sharing this video. I teared up a bit watching it, and just reminiscing. I do genuinely miss this ride. 😢
    Gone, but not forgotten and will always hold a special place in my heart. 🤍🤍

      I share your sentiment. Something about the old wooden coasters is unique and fun. Kind of like being on an old bumpy mine car that broke loose.
      To build on your sentiment I took my seven year old daughter to Six Flags Great America in Chicago for her very first roller coaster amusement park experience last month.. We rode everything at the 48-inch height range including their Goliath.
      Truth be told she got a little averse to riding more big rides after Goliath because we went too big too fast. But it was American Eagle (a big old rickety White wooden Coaster like Colossus) that brought her confidence back and she finished the day with the fire of trying to catch every last big ride before we left finishing with Maxxforce. My daughter literally demanded to ride American Eagle over and over again as the lap bars released to exit (three times in a row with me then three plus times with mom) All the other rides were pretty much one and done for her, but that rickety old wooden coaster really got her going. Honestly going into it I only wanted to ride American Eagle for my own nostalgia thinking she would have thought it was a dumb ride. But no, she ABSOLUTELY loved American Eagle. I had genuine fun yelling and hollering with my daughter nearly 40 years younger than me as that coaster clickety clacked it's way through every turn and drop. My daughter even put her hands up for the first time. Looking back on the whole day American Eagle was the highlight memory of sheer joy.
      It really got me thinking that maybe it isn't just nostalgia with the big wooden coasters. Colossus was my entry to big coasters. Colossus was the ride I remember when I was 10 my grandma, running with my cousins and I from the front of the park to the back to try and catch one more ride before the park closed in a few minutes. (We made it in line just as they roped it off!) Grandma became a legend to us that day and we always remembered that time grandma high blood pressure and all ran (woddled) all that way to catch a big ride with her grandkids. We went home with the biggest smile thanks to Colossus being there to give us a big ride grandma could handle.
      They big wooden coasters are legit fun. Hopefully the parks that still have them realize that not every ride needs to pull G's like a fighter jet. The bumpy old Wooden coasters feel like they are going to rattle themselves apart and maybe that's part of the charm and fear they give. I can't think of other rides that can create those kind of memories across the age ranges.

      I love your story of how Colossus was a very significant part of your youth. It wa that way for me too. I a bit older than you but I remember when Colossus was being built. Revolution was the big cheese roller coaster of the park at that time. I rode that beast when I was 10 years old in 1977. Colossus was being built at that time. They had a model on display and when it was finally completed it was all over local media. I wanted to ride it but was kinda scared to after the accident that happened after Christmas in 1978. I didn’t get to rid it until 1980 when I was 13. I remember how massive it was when you saw it from the parking lot! I will say that I had the same exact reaction on both classic Colossus and Twisted Colossus the first time. It was a “Holy *hit! WTF! Moment. If a coaster can do that to someone twice that is one special epic badass roller coaster. Anyway after that first time I was hooked. We had season passes so could go year round. In the summer season the park was opened until 1:00am back in the 80s. At night was beyond epic! The crowds would thin and you could jump right back on over and over again. I would convince my friends to ride, especially the ones who were afraid! There was one friend that I could not convince no matter what. She just couldn’t get over what happened in 1978 when that woman fell. She said it gave her a bad feeling even though there were certain circumstances why the accident happened. But she still refused. I used to her frustrasted with her. “So what? Are you just going to stand out here like a dumb f**k while the rest of us or going to ride and have fun? What’s the matter with you?” I gave her such a hard time back then but believe it or not we are still very close friends! I rode Colossus thru the 80s from my early teens to young adulthood. I went into roller coast hiatus during the 90s. But returned in the early 2000s. All that time off must’ve made me soft because roller coaters started making me anxious and not in a good way. I rode Goliath and wished I didn’t, Batman was cool and Riddler’s Revenge was terrifying. I couldn’t wait to get off that ride! Viper I remember going on it but I don’t remember the experience and sadly I hardly remember Colossus. But I do remember a certain familiarity and comfort that I appreciated but my friends at the time did not. They were there for X which was new at the time. Hard to believe it’s been there for over 20 years now. Colossus was still my favorite. If anyone asked me what my favorite roller coaster at SFMM was I always said Colossus! I would have loved to see Colossus get a complete restoration back to its majestic iconic glory. Or even if Colossus never ran again it could have been preserved and turned into a sort of museum attraction. But I would rather see it with the new RMC makeover than to see it demolished. There have been so many classic majestic iconic wooden roller coasters demolished as if they never existed over the decades it’s almost tragic. Even the woody that inspired the design and creation of Colossus is gone forever.

      I wish I was one of those people. It’s a decision I will regret. At the time when Colossus was giving everyone its last rides as the Classic iconic majestic coaster we all knew and love I was not in a good place in my life not financially, emotionally or physically. I didn’t believe I could ride a roller coaster again. As it turns out, the only thing keeping me from doing so was me. Anyway, even though I didn’t get to ride I was happy that the park didn’t demolish Colossus but gave it a makeover. I saw Twisted Colossus from the freeway and it looked very much like Colossus but also very strange with its colorful twisted track. I was looking at it from a load so it was hard to image what it was like. This was shortly after it was made over. I stayed away and after several years of a life l style change and reflection my life for better. I recently decided to go to Magic Mountain specifically for Twisted Colossus. It took me a while to work up the courage but it’s once again my favorite Roller Coaster of all time.

      Yep. This was a very solid wooden coaster, even with its pedestrian layout. It wasn't rough at all, and had some good airtime at parts. And yes, you could easily see the Magic Mountain lineup from the freeway, with Viper and X2 on the left, with Tatsu and Revolution at the middle, while Riddler is there at the back, and Goliath, Twisted Colossus, and Scream are at the far eastern end. You can see all of those coasters from the 5 freeway, similar to how you can see Xcelerator, Silver Bullet, and Supreme Scream from the 91 freeeway, which is different than Disbeyland, as you can't even see It's a Small World from the freeway, despite it being the closest ride to the 5.

    In Houston TX there was a theme park called Astroworld that opened in the 60s and closed in 2005. Back in the late 70s/early 80s, they had this indoor planetarium-like theater where you would lie on the floor and watch various POV movies on the ceiling (roller coasters, driving cars, helicopters flying over mountains, etc.), and one of them looked exactly like this ride, and it was running the other train at the same time. I sure wish I could find that video!!!

    I used to be a fan of these RMC retreads of coasters, especially ones that have gone into the ground due to lack of maintenance. The problem is now, however, that Six Flags is doing it to ALL their classic wood coasters. I mean, Colossus is a piece of modern history. It's featured all over the place when there's a roller coaster in the movies, like in National Lampoon's Vacation, where Magic Mountain doubled as Wally World. So why screw that up?

    • @mhtube01

      FigmentsFan I've dubbed it simply the "Six Flags Mentality." Let the ride go to hell and last 1/4 as long as it otherwise would had we maintained it, and then we'll replace it when it's unpleasant and nobody rides it. It's sick. If they would have taken care of this ride and gotten rid of those mid trim brakes, it would have been better. RIP Colossus and we can't forget the ORIGINAL Texas Giant. I haven't ridden either of them but I wish I had gotten the chance.

    Colossus is getting long in the tooth. I feel old. They opened it 2 weeks after I visited Magic Mountain for my 9th grade graduation in 1978. I still remember visiting Magic Mountain in 1977 and there was a model of Colossus near the entrance. They had a contest on what the new coaster should be called. There were 3 or 4 choices available. The only two I can remember are Star Streak (maybe Star Racer) and Colossus. I had no idea what a Colossus was. I remember voting for Star Streak(Star Racer).

  • @xxVidGodxx

    The thing about RMC, is that it takes the charm out of the coaster. For example, they are doing the same thing to Cyclone at Six Flags new england, and don't tell me they're not, because the RMC tracks are already on site. But anyway, for my Cyclone at SFNE was like this beast. It was rough, it was fast, and there was plenty of airtime. I just feel like RMC isn't going to be the same.

    • @Dannyschu13
      @Dannyschu13 9 лет назад +3

      Shut yo bitch ass up. Cyclone was rough as hell, and now it's gonna be awesome. It's giving new life to these rides.

    • @xxVidGodxx
      @xxVidGodxx 9 лет назад +2

      First of all, no need to be rude. Second, if you read my comment, I acknowledged the fact that it was rough. That's what was so great about it. It was, "a rollercoaster ride..." if you can't handle it, that's not my problem.

      @knexpert_of_kansas8127 9 лет назад +1

    • @xxVidGodxx
      @xxVidGodxx 9 лет назад +1

      Knexpert_of_Kansas It's not that I'm not gonna like it...it's just, I grew up riding the Cyclone and it's in my top 5 list of all time favorite rides. I understand things need to change but I'm gonna miss it.

    • @PaulSF
      @PaulSF 9 лет назад

      ***** This is correct and I'm getting a little sad these days the way people are. Cyclone was incredibly unique in addition to the charm. That first drop and turn maneuver? The deliberate pacing? Even in its re-profiled form there was nothing else like it. It was a twisted work of art, genuinely beautiful to even look at. Now everything is about being as fast and chaotic as possible with no chance to even breathe. I'm not gonna sit here and say I won't have fun with Wicked Cyclone when I ride it, but I know the appeal will ware off with it. Ejecting me out of my seat and turning me upside down every three seconds isn't why I love coasters so much, and it definitely isn't why Cyclone fascinated me. Packing that much ride into that little space was brilliant, and before the trims murdered the end of the ride, the last couple hairpin turns into the station were the most thrilling end to an already crazy unique coaster I can think of. Now the ride will consist of a long steep drop... because that hasn't been done before (as close as across the park under the name Bizarro), and hanging me upside down for an extended moment. As smoothly as possible, mind you. Now rollercoasters are about feeling like you're flying around on a soft couch instead of OUT OF CONTROL. I sound like an old man to some I'm sure (I'm not, I'm 29), but that's just not special to me.

    This ride totally destroyed my back. Me and my friend went to 6 flags on a weekday in the mid 2000s and the place was dead me and my friend were the only ones riding. I think the lack of weight made the cart jump around more cause when we hit some of the slats it compacted my back and i could barely walk out of the park. Never went to the doctor for it. Since then my back has randomly gone out and will be crooked for a week before it fixes itself.

      The ORIGINAL was a far more intense and exciting ride than this version was. By 2014, the ride had received a lot of modifications that were not for the better such as the brake run half way through the layout that was originally a double down. This created some serious pacing issues for the remainder of the ride. Twisted Colossus is probably still the most intense version, but Colossus in its earlier years was a much better coaster. You can find some old videos from the 80s here on RUclips and see how much faster it went.

    I rode it in 1978 when it was new (it actually opened in June of that year). It was turbulent! There were some small bumps that caused negative G forces. I was a skinny kid back then and I remember when I went weightless that my quads hurt because they pressed against the restraining bar so hard. That same year, a large woman rode and either the restraining bar didn't close all the way, or she put too much pressure on it when she went negative and was ejected from the ride, and unfortunately fell to her death.
    They closed the ride after that and modified it, removing the bumps that caused the negative Gs.
