I think AMG have made a mistake making this their first shot at all Electric after the SLS - we needed a sports car to show what the Affalterbach nut cases can do, not a massaged, fat Mercedes Prius. IMO 🤔

Fully agree. but there seems space for an EQS 63... but then again, the EQS is just way too big to be brilliant. An EQE 63 or better EQC 63 could be awesome..
I really wanted to like that car, but instead I’m hating how much I hate it. The video game visuals, the lights, and the over the top fake engine noises are gimmicky distractions. I’m not completely anti electric though I am highly reluctant and it’s surprising that Audi of all companies has given me hope for the future with the RS E-Tron (or whatever it’s called).
A very conservative AMG. I don't think they've figured out their "soul" yet, perhaps because so much depends on what the customer is expecting from an electric AMG, which I think is still a moving target.
I just don't think it will ever replace the joy and feel of an AMG V8, but that's regulations for you. Does this car have that sound shaker feature, or is it just speaker sound?
Even car reviews are lifeless and emotionless when it's just a silent/humming car with no real idea or sensation of speed that we are used to hearing from high powered combustion engines. Not because the review is any different but without the sound and the rumble and the agressive nature of high powered engines there's not anything left of a car in my opinion.

Looks better than the standard EQS, although that has slightly grown on me. I love the sound it makes, but it’s a bit annoying having it drone in the background when you’re cruising at slow speeds. Same with combustion engines mind you. Overall, a respectable first start, remember this is a 53 model, not meant to replace your 63 monsters, so expectations need to be a bit lower. That’s what I notice with some people in the comments and Raz’s less-than-enthusiastic voice. Yes, this AMG has no engine, but it’s not meant to replace the flagship engine that everyone loves so dearly. I’d love to see an EQ SL, that’ll get people more excited for sure.

These cars look so much better in person I live in metro Detroit area in Michigan and I saw 2 of these with Manufacturers plates on the freeway and in person they are absolutely stunning these cars have so much presence
The acceleration hum got really annoying in 2 minutes, by the time you were driving in the canyons, I just wanted it to stop. That's the first electric car for me that caused such reaction
I'm a Huge AMG fan and I'm fearful of what AMG is going to be in the future . I hope EQS is just a Klass of Mercedes vehicles that are all electric and this is their mid level version of that,

On the EVA platform (EQE/EQS) we will have only 43 and 53 models as AMG versions. The 43 might be a single rear motor while the 53 is the dual motor. And because in the US might have only 53 dual motor models that's why they've badged it only AMG EQS. The 43 might concernes the EQE sedan only and could be sold only in Europe.
I like the AMG EQS53 I know its too heavy to start off with but everything is good about it even the predicted range is better than most performance cars well apart from tesla.

Sounds absolutely awful on the move and the start up and off sounds like my Macbook powering up and just overall it seems like you're driving a computer / white good appliance rather than a car. I wonder what a future AMG EQGT will be like (eg: EQ GTR)? Perhaps they'll be able to make that far more exciting, the EQS is fantastic but way too heavy (and you wouldn't buy an S63 if you were interested in a AMG drivers car, you'd go for a AMG GT, C63S, etc...).
Very narrow minded comments and most are a criticism of the sounds. Switch the fake engine noise off… omg. YOU KNOW THE MBUX DOES GET UPDATES AS NEW FAKE SOUNDS AND VISUALS ARE AVAILABLE. Electric albeit very expensive is definitely the future at the moment. Problem is due to the cost is not affordable to most. But doesn’t make it a bad car. Appreciate the shape and body styling can be a love or hate. But it really is phenomenal to drive, tech is sublime. Overwhelming to start with as it just does so much and air suspension and 4 wheel steering make it easy to park if not using the remote parking app or auto park.
The eq interior is phenomenal, hyperscreen well if that’s not inspiring combined with mbux. Tech is brilliant but a bit overwhelming initially. But great daily drives. Albeit I did go with amg eqe.

The exterior design has failed and cannot be salvaged even with an AMG badge. 2 years left with my current Merc and unfortunately nothing exciting coming up from the electric corner. Exterior-wise it looks like it’s a couple of trims lower than the S-Class. The S-class exudes presence even though I liked the W222 model a bit more. If Audi/Porsche can get it right with the E-tron GT/Taycan why can’t Merc??
I think it’s a beautiful car and great daily for people to use. Though I do agree, we need an all electric 63 level of a car to come out in a 2 door coupe or 4 door saloon that is more in line with the current design language of 63s like the E63, GT63 etc
If you need to ask yourself, is it a proper AMG? Then, you have your answer. It’s not. The real AMG brand was diluted in 2015 by Tobias Moers and will not recover in its new form.
The problem with ALL electric cars is their much shorter longevity. The cost of replacing their batteries, especially those with big batteries can cost north of 25 000€. What this means is that after 8 years the vehicle is for the scrap yard if the battery fails. Trying to sell your used electric vehicle after 4-5 years will be worth less than an ordinary vehicle; the proof is in the prices of used Tesla vehicles that are over 5 years old or older. The smart buyer currently is the one that picks a hybrid or PHEV. When the manufacturers start guaranteeing their batteries for over 12 years then it is when battery vehicles make sense. Range is not an issue anymore in most parts of the Western world as chargers can be found literally everywhere. P.S. Electric vehicles are very heavy. In general it would be a welcome for manufactures to improve their brakes until they can create smaller batteries with more electric storage. Hopefully by 2030 there will be substantial improvements… including a sound that mimics an actual ICE engine both within and outside the vehicle when you want.
That sound reminds me of the movie Tron. Not sure I could get used to that. I need the good ole V8 or V12 rumble. With some pops n bangs Also the body of this thing is no where near as sexy as the concept. This just looks like a bloated walwrus.
This is roughly 300kg heavier than the Taycan with roughly 14kwh more battery, yes it's bigger but it has a lower drag coefficient yes it's about 120 mile more range (on paper) but it's not as good looking or able to carry as much compared to the Turismo. The interior is better than rivals but the screen ugh, the lack of frunk due to being cab forward. Where is all that weight actually spent and what do you realistically get as an improvement over other halo EV's. I find it very underwhelming both in design and spec.

Its always to the left of the driver and the pedals are off to the right, so your whole body is twisted. Shockingly bad driving positions. I'm amazed they are as popular as they are. I'm convinced people keep buying them based on reputation alone. Its been like that in every MB I have ever sat in for the last 20 years. Bit harsh you might say but ooohh so true :( so frustrating! I think the decision makes sense. EQS53 is not a top end AMG. They don't need a full electric top AMG right now. The main focus would be on the next few V8 hybrid cars. BMW M also follows the same strategy with the iX M60, which is a M performance instead of M power. The reason is simple. The V8 hybrid models will take over the electric part of M Power sales in the next few years. Taycan turbo S and RsEtron are in different situations. The Turbo series of cars (except 911) are doing very bad at the market since 2018, especially the two Turbo S E-hybrid. Nobody wants them. Porsche really need the Taycan Turbo S to create a new market. We can see it from the numbers. AMG sells over 110K units from Jan to Sept this year, while BMW M sells over 125K units in the same period. Audi Rs can only sell 20K units and Porsche may sell similar numbers from GTS and Turbos. You are desperately to change if you are BEHIND!You play conservatively if you're AHEAD. It's always been like this.
What is telling for me is the difference in how engaging this review is compared to any ICE performance car review you have done over the years... This review is lacking in your own personal excitement and engagement. Not because you chose to, but the car itself lacks the soul that makes an AMG an AMG. I watched this video and felt like a part of us has died if this is the future we have to look forward to.
Totally agree with your observations. The thing is, the car is totally uninspiring. These cars are one trick ponies, mash the accelerator in a straight line. That's about it. Not to mention, it's ugly af.
I am not opposed to EV at all from AMG or BMW M however I am opposed to the way they are making them look. Just like every other car manufacturer they scream “look at me I’m an EV” I would rather a car look beautiful like an M2 or AMG GT and just have an EV motor….. wouldn’t that be an idea….

I really like AMG's! However, I think AMG can do better. Lucid Air with 1,111 HP, a 0-60 time of 2.5 seconds and about 471 miles range.

Yes, the wheels are comprised of various alloys, but so is a lot of the rest of the car.

EQS53 is not a top end AMG. They don't need a full electric top AMG right now. The main focus would be on the next few V8 hybrid cars.
BMW M also follows the same strategy with the iX M60, which is a M performance instead of M power. The reason is simple. The V8 hybrid models will take over the electric part of M Power sales in the next few years.
Taycan turbo S and RsEtron are in different situations. The Turbo series of cars (except 911) are doing very bad at the market since 2018, especially the two Turbo S E-hybrid. Nobody wants them. Porsche really need the Taycan Turbo S to create a new market.
We can see it from the numbers. AMG sells over 110K units from Jan to Sept this year, while BMW M sells over 125K units in the same period. Audi Rs can only sell 20K units and Porsche may sell similar numbers from GTS and Turbos.

What is telling for me is the difference in how engaging this review is compared to any ICE performance car review you have done over the years... This review is lacking in your own personal excitement and engagement. Not because you chose to, but the car itself lacks the soul that makes an AMG an AMG. I watched this video and felt like a part of us has died if this is the future we have to look forward to.
Totally agree with your observations. The thing is, the car is totally uninspiring. These cars are one trick ponies, mash the accelerator in a straight line. That's about it. Not to mention, it's ugly af.
EVs are the antithesis of AMG. If the ICE is dead Mercedes should retire the AMG brand with a little dignity. This thing is a turd.
I am not opposed to EV at all from AMG or BMW M however I am opposed to the way they are making them look. Just like every other car manufacturer they scream “look at me I’m an EV” I would rather a car look beautiful like an M2 or AMG GT and just have an EV motor….. wouldn’t that be an idea….

I get the fact that electric cars are the new virtue signalling icon. Even if your powering it up with coal power electricity. But the intoxicating warble of an AMG V8 will never be replaced by the articifal video games version of "warbling Double A's". Thats simply a fact.
