Amazing video Sam! Your experience with charging clearly shows there is a problem. How are those chargers always broken? Whatever company gets that right will make millions!
A good podcast idea could be to get a cabbie on who had a petrol cab and now has a electric one…. How long does it take them to charge up. How much does it cost? Have there been times where they have potentially lost hundreds in fares because the charger is broken?

I find a lot of the new cars very distracting which is rather ironic given the arguments years prior about distracted drivers and cell phones. Great video. Thanks!

I feel like cars like your ferrari and others that really pull at our heart strings encapsulate the idea that the journey is the destination. An 8 hour trip on a motorway in an electric car isn't really the same as a sports / super car and I can't get away from the feeling that most people in these electric vehicles really just don't even want to be on the road at all. And all us car enthusiasts would be the better for it if they weren't either. Do you think that 8 hour roundtrip on the motorway would have been more enjoyable if done via train?

So, 40 min to get 30 miles, lets say that 1 gallon of fuel which is about 15 seconds at the fuel pump… And lets not go down the road of a few years time when you get to the charge station, plug in, and it says “charging system error , please reset car to proceed” at which time you may as well call up the nearest scrap yard and weigh it in. Environmentally friendly, lets see in 10 years time shall we. I’ll keep my 20 year old, 150,000 Mk1 Audi TT which I can service at home thank you. Great Videos btw Sam, always make my Sunday evening watching a pleasure.

Sam, your video perfectly describes why Musk is a multi-billionaire and Tesla is the benchmark; he put the network in before he sold the cars that needed it. I had a BMW I3 and had the issue that you highlight. A poor generic charging network. With Tesla I have never had to wait, never had less than 50KW (normally over 100KW and now more and more 250KW) and no faffing with apps. I didn’t check every comment so apologies for any repetition.

Excellent car Sam, and good to hear your views on it. However, you say you don't want to 'hoon it' (my words for what you said) because you'll lose all your charge (and I know you don't mean the whole lot). Yet, with other, fossil cars, you do the same thing, only, it's petrol, fossil fuel. I think that lots of petrolheads (myself included) think differently when it comes to fossil fuel, and not 'electrons.' Yes, we know if we give it some wellie in a fast car, the fuel level will decrease, sometimes at an alarming rate. The same is happening with the electrons, just they are a different medium to fuel. I also agree with you on the poor state of chargers in this country, they are not maintained enough. It feels like the operators of these things have either not employed enough technicians to go and fix them sharpish, or they just can't be arsed.

Sheffield is not well served for chargers in public car parks so need to charge at motorway services on way back…. When a function goes wrong the entire panel will need changing (rather than a single switch/button). Not to mention poor visibility when the sun shines on it, dust and grime through static and finger prints.
But I guess with all the time an owner is going to be sitting stationary waiting for the bloody thing to charge, you need some entertainment.

Car manufacturers are likely reacting to governments phasing ICE out. Harry, from Harry's garage, made mention of this on a video about EVs. Apparently the car manufacturers he's spoken to aren't really happy about it but are being pressured into it. It makes sense to me, that car manufacturers aren't going to be particularly enthusiastic about investing huge amounts of money, into tech which isn't useable to the standard of combustion engines, etc.

The problem with electric cars is the government. They make it really hard to live with them since the infostructure is crap

The problem with electric cars is the government because it's the government's pushing forward in forcing mass adoption of EVs.
The previous infrastructure is crap because there wasn't any real demand for it. The future infrastructure will be crap because they won't be able to fulfill supply after mass adoption.

IF I would be on the market to buy the EQS I would go for the 580+ and not the 53 AMG. I don't think it's a proper AMG. I have Tesla Model 3 LR and for me what in a way distracted you with tech is exactly the opposite with the Tesla. The tech is there but it's not imposing. I don't live in the UK but for what I've seen on several videos your charging infrastructure is an absolute pain although it's getting better. As for me arround here I can't complain but the charging bit it's a process that in the beggining is the worst thing to get used to if your daily commute is too long but IMO an EV works better if you can alwyas charge at home and only do some fills to extend the range. And there is where Tesla excels for me, Tesla Supercharger are always working. You get used to it and for a daily driver is just perfect and as for long road trips I can't complain also. I did Lisbon > Florence > Lisbon (5169km) and it was amazing, wouldn't have been better in combustion car unless maybe if it was a Bentley Continental GT .... but it's not the same price range is it? also not the same expenses in "fuel" :D

Realistically it’s the AMG SUV market that this would appeal to. Those make no sense to me as an AMG either, they are also giant overweight behemoths. And if your getting one of these, then you are most likely getting a charger installed at home which takes out the vast majority of charging concerns.

In my opinion new Mercedes cars have very cheap interiors. Screens and black plastic everywhere, since when is that luxurious. And since when is that reliable or lasting.

Cars becoming extremely ugly and way overpriced. Also notice cars like this can only sell in a limited few cities around the world. The vast majority of the world will not even see an electric car for decades. I live in Acapulco, Mexico, been here two years seen one electric car, a Tesla visitor, and not seen another electric car since.

what this toxic waste has to do with AMG? is it one man, one engine part? is it hand build V8 or V12 in Affalterbach story? or is it trick to sell tesla with mercedes logo marked as AMG for highest margin? I wonder if the batteries are wrapped in more than 10 kg of Vermiculate (asbestos) just like tesla? so sad to see youtubers manipulated to sell the lies like this!!

The key with EV driving is planning the charge points. Not hard! Ionity is the best country wide high power set up. After 20,000 miles in a Taycan (in 14 months), it was super easy and the charging with many car manufacturers is subsidised, which makes it very cost effective. However the purchase prices are high, but residuals on electric cars are very strong. Unlike Tony's comment in Behind the Glass where he talked about his friend with an old leaf which were very bad at degradation, modern better tech has very little degration. Over 100,000 miles you would see less than 8%. Given wear and tear in an ICE car that's pretty good. Given you only need a brake service, there is very little to go wrong. No road tax and charging at home make running costs very cost-effective. The biggest issue can be software glitches. Think about the issues with a laptop and sometimes having to reboot it when it throws a wobbler, and that is about the worst-case issue. Mind many end up back at dealers for resets.
Unlike Sam, you only use an 11kW charger when out an about in desperation. Search our 125kW to 350kW chargers if your car can take it. On Ionitythe Taycan often would go from 10 to 80% in 17 minutes. Kia and Hyundai use the same tech (Thanks to Matte Remac), so they charge mega fast too!
The EQS is too expensive for what it is. Most high power executives are not going to be too excited by supper-size screens which when they go wrong will cost a mint. Why Mercedes didn't go more minimalistic and classy like a Bentley is beyond me. I would much rather stay with the Taycan, which looks superb and is equally high quality.
For an every day EV and low cost the MG4 would be perfect for most. EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5 or 6 could be perfect too. Fun around the lanes, why not the Mini Copper S EV. Thats a scream.
Tesla...just hate the design and the ride quality and those horrible seat materials.
However, Sam is bang on a 911 and F-Type are the desirable cars which all you want.

Shame he didn’t go to an Ionity charger really, there should have been a couple on the route. Be interesting to get him in a Tesla and see how he feels about the infrastructure then.

    • @sh-hg4eg

Those long term cost savings are going to be wiped out by mass adoption. As you mentioned, you already pay a premium for the car upfront which wipes out a chunk of those savings immediately. Secondly, the government aren't going to just watch fuel taxes dwindle and not try and recoup that on EVs.
Thirdly, mass adoption is going to significantly increase demand on the grid and subsequently increase prices; cheaper night tarrifs will likely be negated, due to millions of EVs suddenly sucking up large amounts of electric at night.
As an addendum to the third point, the West is currently shutting down all the cheap sources of energy in a bid to go net zero. We're only really at the beginning of this endeavour and prices will only increase the more we adopt it.

That Tesla vegan leather... Mmm.. what Mercedes MBTex again.
While I don't have the money for this AMG, the charging experience is very similar to what I see in Australia. 1 or 2 stalls often with one broken, split over multiple apps.
Tesla, while not without its faults just gets it right - walled garden, limited choices, limited customisations - but it just works..
Tesla is very much the Apple of the car world.
All the other manufacturers are the various flavours of Android.
