Looks great! I have a kid, a dog or two and my gf to put in the truck so deleting the back seat isn't an option for me but lots of awesome ideas I'll try to use myself!
Thank you! Use this time before you have your license to research everything and all of your options. Preferably, you want something safe(ish, at least), reliable (unless you have the space, money, and especially are willing to learn skills to fix it yourself, whihc I highly encourage, as you'll save a ton of money and learn useful skills. Chrisfix on RUclips is a good place to start, if you haven't already), and something somewhat decent on gas. That's kind of a tough ask for this type of thing, but it's not fun having to spend $100 every time you take it out on an adventure (BTW, my Rover is none of those things LOL, but it's proof you can have a good time no matter what hunk of garbage you have). Happy searching!
Thanks! That was the goal, and it came out quite well. I'd like to add solar panels at some point so I can be off grid for longer without running the engine, as well as install a Rotopax or similar system to extend range
Hi, thanks for this video and for your posts on the forum. I'm planning to convert a discovery 2 as well. I had a question. For your bed, do you move the front seat as far forward as possible or is it a normal driving position? Do you know approximately the dimensions of your bed in length? Thank you for your answer.
I leave the driver's seat in the normal driving position. The bed is pushed off to the passenger side so it doesn't get in the way. I do move the passenger seat all the way forward to get more room. The bed is 72" long - I'm 5'11" and it's comfortable if I sleep slightly sideways.
Thank you! If I scoot the passenger seat all the way up, you can fit if you're u to around 6 feet tall. Any taller and it's technically doable, but too tight to be comfortable.
Very inspiring work, I have been sorting out how to do the same in a 92 4Runner. I want to modulate and slide in for weekend trail camp fun the easily removable for economy. My delema is keeping all heavy stuff low and sprung. 33spare, aux battery, tools, 20ltrwater, n fuel, chainsaw, highlift, all dust sealed under or outside.
Doing the same with my Surf, the Discovery has loads more headroom though. I bought a Chinese Diesel heater to hang on the rear tyre carrier for chilly nights. Luckily I am used to 3D CAD software due to 3D printing, so I have been designing and redesigning the woodwork for weeks. Trying to get to an optimal design, less wood, less weight, that still does everything I need, been watching tons of Overland conversions, so thanks to P1 for posting this.
@@RCModelling4U Not a problem! Glad I could help. Cheap Chinese diesel heater is the move - it gets really chilly in there without the heat on full on a cold night, which is loud and annoying (and nerve racking - my junkyard-save cheap D2 likes to drop to zero oil pressure if I let it idle too long). I really wish I was good with 3d modeling and CAD (especially if I had a 3D scanner) - it would have made the process simpler and less time consuming. Be careful with your design for your Surf - with my bench, headroom is kinda tight even with the step-up roof on the Disco.
I am 187cm tall and wondering do you think I can lie flat if there was a bed in the back? Also what is your take on the td5 engine, I’m ideally looking for a discovery 2 body with a 300tdi engine but they are few and far between. Thanks again!
I'm around 178 cm tall and I fit at an angle, so there might not be enough room for you. I don't have any experience with the diesel engine options - I'm in the US, and we only ever got the V8.
It's rather comfortable. I can sit fully upright. It's tight for more than 1 person, and I wouldn't want to spend more than a week at a time in it, but for the occasional off-road adventure, it's quite nice
Thanks! I'm aware - that one is more for the kitchen when I'm cooking stuff in the back. I have another one up under the passenger side for any potential mechanical fires
It would be pretty tight but you'd have room to sleep back there. I'm comfortable at 5'11", so I'm sure you could squeeze another couple inches out of it. You wouldn't have room to stretch your arms out or anything but it'll work
Watching this sat in my UK spec disco 2, Its funny how the clock is on the wrong side of the car for you, they must not bother to change the interior round lol
Ha yeah they aren't super well thought out. I personally prefer the buttons closer and the clock further away. To each their own I guess. Small issues in a truck with plenty of major issues lol
Hi what’s the height seating bed platform and what’s the height from floor of vehicle to roof lining just I have l322 and would love to do this but not sure if I have the same roof height as your disco amazing job by the way 👍
Thanks! The D2's relatively simple and old school construction made the conversion relatively easy - I'm not sure the same could be said about the L322. I'm 6 foot and barely brush the headliner when sitting on the bench, which is about a foot tall. I don't have an exact measurement for you unfortunately but it's the same as stock so I'm sure a dimension diagram could get you this data.
Im confused how to supports for the extended bed manage to stay straight, they look like they would slip with just being held on with the strap? Nice build though 👍
Yeah there is a lot of wasted space in these trucks from the factory. Stripping all of the cheap crappy plastic out of the back is what made this possible. There's probably almost 10 inches in some places of wasted space behind those panels
I don't have exact measurements on me, but from memory, the bench is around 24 inches wide and roughly 5 and half feet long. Fully set up as a bed, the platform grows to roughly 46 inches wide and just under 6 feet long with the extension. How big everything can be is dependent on what your base vehicle is - larger vehicles will allow you more space.
It's not a super tight fit but I wouldn't say there is tons of room. If you are super close with someone (significant other, etc) and don't mind being super close for a day or two you could make it work.
From South Africa interesting that for all us Landy livers, tools and spares are high on our priority list 😁
It's not unreliable, it just has character! LOL

love the car !!!! iam 14 years and want a overland/ off-road vechile when i am older i love it

@@d2overland thank you great advise
EXCELLENCE.
May you have many trouble-free miles in your beautiful rig.
That is very nice! I was impressed with those cabinets and love the light!
Thanks! It took forever to get perfect but I'm finally very happy with how it turned out
Un gran trabajo. Yo tengo un defender y no sé si podría también montarlo. Creo que es más estrecho. Gracias.
Sweet build! Perfect for a solo overlander.
Thanks! That was the goal, and it came out quite well. I'd like to add solar panels at some point so I can be off grid for longer without running the engine, as well as install a Rotopax or similar system to extend range
A drop down table would be useful on the rear door.
You built with a lot of thought, for yourself. Well done. 👍🏻🙏🦘
Simple, but practical! Well done!

Nice rig! I love discos. Unfortunately I'm too tall to convert it to sleep in, but your system is a great idea!

Some pretty clever work there

That's really cool 👍👍
How comfortable is it to sit in that vehicle, is there enough vertical height in the car to live in for longer periods of time?
It's rather comfortable. I can sit fully upright. It's tight for more than 1 person, and I wouldn't want to spend more than a week at a time in it, but for the occasional off-road adventure, it's quite nice
Who designed the cabinets and all of the furniture type stuff?
I designed and built everything myself
I love your land rover discovery v8 in Britain we get the td5 disco very good
Thanks! Hopefully the TD5 is more reliable. My V8 has been anything but.
Looks great mate, But the Fire Extinguisher ain't gonna be any good locked up in your cupboard
Thanks! I'm aware - that one is more for the kitchen when I'm cooking stuff in the back. I have another one up under the passenger side for any potential mechanical fires

Thanks! They flop around until you fold out the bed. Then, the square edges hold them upright as supports.
Very cool!!!!!
What wheels and tires specs are you running?
Factory 18" Hurricane wheels with 275/65R18 Kanati Trail Hog A/T tires. 2" Terrafirma medium duty lift to fit them
Thanks@@d2overland
Epic mate, did you remove the rear seats or are they folded down ?
Thanks! Seats have been fully removed for a flat floor to start with.
Did you find that you gained a lot of extra space by removing the rear plastic panels / trim ?
Yeah there is a lot of wasted space in these trucks from the factory. Stripping all of the cheap crappy plastic out of the back is what made this possible. There's probably almost 10 inches in some places of wasted space behind those panels

Hey there what size tires are you running on your rig? And what brand are they? Please thanks
Kanati Trail Hog. 32” tall - 275/65-R18
Oh wow they look awesome do you have a lift on it or is it stock?
2 inch Terrafirma Medium-duty lift
This is really clever, nicely thought out. What length is the bed?
Thanks! It's right around 6 feet with the extenders folded out. Its plenty comfortable for one person - two would fit, but only if you were very close
Nice one 👍👍👍🇳🇿🇳🇿🍺🍺
Hey where’d you find those temperature gauges?
Advance Auto actually. Bosch gauges, around $35 if I remember correctly
What is the distance from the seat to rear door?
Roughly anywhere 5 foot 6 to just under 6 feet fully forward
Is it a tight fit or plenty of room
It's not a super tight fit but I wouldn't say there is tons of room. If you are super close with someone (significant other, etc) and don't mind being super close for a day or two you could make it work.
Ow nice brother . Good travels 👍
Tienes las medidas ?
What length of bed have you managed?
Around 6 feet or so. It depends on how far up I pull the passenger seat. Plenty of room to sleep comfortably
How tall are you my friend ?
I'm 5' 11". I have another inch or so for ceiling height sitting up, and probably 2 inches of extra room when laying down on the bed.
