    Fun fact: In the scene where Chaucer gives the big speech and the crowd is silent, that's because the extras for the crowd were all Czech (the film was filmed in Czechia) and didn't understand English, or at least not English to that level, so they didn't know that was their cue to cheer. Mark Addy then went "...YEAH!" and the crowd went with it, and it was so iconic that they kept it in the movie.

    9:35 this movie was filmed in modern day Czechia: in this scene, the crowd was supposed to cheer at Chaucer’s speech but since none of the extras spoke English, there was stunned silence. Mark Addy (who plays Roland and, yes, Robert Baratheon as well) adlibbed the “yeah!” and it was kept in the film.

    God, I forgot how much I love this movie.
    That scene where William is in the stocks and gets saved by the prince- you called it when Geoff came up and you thought he was about to say something. It's probably once of my favorite deleted scenes from any movie- the crowd is all antagonistic but then Geoff gives this passionate heartfelt speech about who Will really is (by far his best speech in the movie) and by the end of it the crowd goes from being mad at "Ulrich" to chanting his name. Geoff listens to them going "Ulrich, Ulrich, Ulrich" and yells "His name is WILLIAM!" and they all start chanting William. Amazing scene.

    • @CarefulWithThatAx
      @CarefulWithThatAx Год назад +3

      Seconded! Definitely Chaucer's best speech. I understand why they cut it (they felt it undercut Edward's intervention) but I would have much rather seen Will's own people turn the crowd, then have the Prince Ex Machina seal the deal by legitimizing him.

    The DVD extras on this were great. It's not just the music, it's the Nike swooshes, the modernized version of the dances, the camera angles they used - they were really going out of their way to put a modern audience in the headspace of a person in that time visiting a big sporting event, or a dance, or even creating a branded product, and what that might have felt like for them.

  • @craigmeaders3867
    @craigmeaders3867 Год назад +3

    What I love about this movie is the anachronism of it. The music is modern because it gives the audience the feeling the crowd at the time would have had. The pumped up feeling of excitement for the best sporting event they could attend. People are people throughout time, and it would have been awesome to be there, and they show that well.

  • @foulrot
    @foulrot Год назад +7

    This movie is firmly in my top 3 movies; it's not the best movie by most standards, but it's just so fun, funny, and touching. The cast is stacked with amazingly funny people who ended up going on to some extremely high profile roles.
    I also love the subtle way of insinuating that the modern music is the equivalent of the music they would have played at the time, this is hinted at by the horns, in the beginning, "playing" We will rock you and the chamber music morphing into the Bowie song for the dance.

    When Adhemar says that one who strives to touch a star oft stumbles on a simple straw, he's referring to William's surname of Thatcher. Thatchers would make roofs of straw thatched together to keep out wind and rain. That's how many English last names came about, Baker, Smith, Fletcher, etc. They were their jobs, taught to their children, and the name carried on.

    The music and the costume design is deliberately anachronistic. The logic is that jousting was the equivalent of the Super Bowl or the World Cup today. Since the audience would be so enthusiastic, they chose to use modern sporting memes to communicate the enthusiasm and the excitement.
    Same thing for the music and the dancing.
    The costume designer deliberately went after a medieval/rock star motif for the protagonists. They liked to party like it was 1360!

    • @CxOrillion

    Great reaction. And btw since you asked about other Heath Ledger movies, you should definitely check out "10 Things I Hate About You" (1999). It's basically a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare's "The Taming of The Shrew". And of course, "The Dark Knight" (a 2008 Batman movie...Heath Ledger won an Oscar for his role). But if you're going to watch 'The Dark Knight', I would suggest first watching "Batman Begins" (2005...Heath isn't in this movie, but watching this first will help understand the sequel).
    Another good movie that Heath is in, is 'The Patriot' (2000) starring Mel Gibson.

In many ancient cultures, being able to wear clean white clothing marked you as wealthy, since you needed a bunch of servants to actually keep it clean and replace it as soon as it began to fray. The poorest people would also wear white, because undyed cloth was cheapest, but their lack of wealth resulted in that clothing quickly becoming brownish and tattered. The contrast between the two appearances of the same color was what made the wealthy stand out more.

    You kept noticing actors you recognised from other shows…. You will soon get to see Laura Fraser again (the actress who plays Kate in this movie) in Breaking Bad. She plays a character called Lydia in BB.

    Heath Ledger is also fun in the romantic comedy, 10 Things I Hate About You, a modern take on Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, set in an American high school.

    Interesting facts:
    Geoffrey Chaucer is the writer of the Tales of Canterbury, which the second is "The Knight's Tale", that inspired the movie, that is set in a specific time in which the location of Geoffrey Chaucer is undocumented, hence unkown.

    The red haired guy is Alan Tudyk who does lots of voice acting and live acting. Tucker & Dale vs Evil, Firefly, Dodgeball, Rogue One (K-2SO), IRobot (Sunny), Wreck-it Ralph (King Candy)

    Heath also did a movie called 2 hands. Not very popular but one of his earlier movies. I like it. His iconic Joker roll out weighs many others.
