Master and Commander - Far Side of the World, is well worth checking out.
A beautiful mind is some of his best work
Best naval movie ever.
Great movie
Great call
And the books are pretty nice as well.
I consider Joaquin Phoenix's character one of the greatest villains of all time.
Fun fact: Jack Gleeson used this as inspiration for his portrayal as Joffrey Baratheon in GOT
And he was nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of Commodus. Easily one of the top actors of his generation.
The greatest is Jenny from Forrest Gump 🤪
@@llocarydoline9738 Ouch and the ref takes a point away!
My personal favourite is Brutus from Rome - poor Caesar never saw it coming.
Considering he was one of the first Emperors to lead Rome into its final decline? Yeah, I'd say so. BTW, Gladiator is based on actual history, except that Commodus loved to actually fight in the arena and he was killed by a fellow gladiator Narcissus at the direction of the Praetorians.
I hope you were......... entertained :D
Great Job :)
I get it!
Always
Maij your are the best person to react to this movie your depth and breath of intellectual knowledge along with your high level of emotional intelligence. Make you the perfect person to delve into the phycological and moral conundrums that arise in this movie. Which makes you one of the best reactors out there. Keep it up.
As you wish.
"he seems to be taking it ok...ish..." joker kills dumbledore. "ok hes not taking it so well"
Joker kills Dumbledore, but Robin Hood avenges him
"That was the worst time to eat a cookie!" LOL!
I love this movie even though it isn't historically accurate. Gladiators were the elite athletes of their time and worth too much to fight to the death in every game. They pimped products, had fan clubs and did public appearances just like today.
Sad fact: Oliver Reed (Maximus's gladiator master) was to have a larger role in the film but he died before filming was completed due to his career-long battle with alcohol abuse so his death had to be portrayed offscreen.
Given how long Kingdom of Heaven was supposed to be in cinemas I can believe that there was more to the OG script than we got, a shame we never got to see it.
The character name is Proximo, and the term for a gladiator trainer/purveyor is a 'lanista' going by the Spartacus series, albeit the term is not mentioned in this film I think.
so they gave him a bigger role but died, than put him in another role, how did they got the scenes then of a different role while he is death.
(wel meanwhile i looked id up, there is nothing about a greater rol, that bullshit. they finished his final scenes with computer technik)
Interesting fact Marij. Director Ridley Scott burned an actual forest in the beginning scene. The found a European forest that was set to be burnt for fire control and they got permission to burn it down for the movie and save the forestry division some money.
Lmao…”he taking that ok-ish” that didn’t last 2 seconds
Now you should see Spartacus (The movie and the show) and HBO's "Rome"
Maximus was not a real guy. Commodus and Marcus Aurelius were and were a lot like they were portrayed in the movie. (Commodus was not killed in the arena, the conspiracy got one of his sparring slaves to strangle him in his bath) The events in the movie would have taken place around 192 AD
Spartacus was the real gladiator who, in 74 BC, escaped and mounted a slave revolt that destabilized the Republic. "Rome" is the story of how the Caesars took power and declared Rome an empire a few decades later.
Julius Caesar himself is actually a key character in the final season of Spartacus too.
Rome was not "declared" an Empire, just saying.
It never ceased to be a Republic.
The ammount of disrespect when he called him "Your highness" is wild. Highness is a way of talking to a prince, not a king, indicating that Maximus doesnt consider him a king.
nice litle detail that most overlook
Well, technically the roman emperors were not nobility with a clear line of succession through birth. So he can be considered neither prince nor king.
*emperor, not king.
The last Roman king was killed almost half a thousand years before Julius Caesar took power.
The Caesars/emperors of Rome became the de facto monarchs of all the lands held by the former Roman Republic, but the ancient Roman dislike of the the word king cannot be understated, because the last one was basically just like Commodus.
@@Quotenwagnerianer That being said both the proto emperor Julius Caesar and the first true emperor Julius Augustus/Octavian were of a noble/aristocratic family descended from the earliest power wielders in the Roman Republic.
Yes, the disrespect is in calling a Princeps Civitatis as if he was a MONARCH.
The Monarcy ended in Rome in 509 BC.
Anyone PRINCEP CIVITATIS (FIRST CITIZEN) that tried to portray himself as a Monarch would immediately be ousted from all the high offices that he held (and confered him power) and probably be executed.
Read the history of August to see how he took all the care to never be seen as if he wanted to be a monarch.
Julius Caesar himself was killed in the Senate EXACTLY because the Senate thought he wanted to be king.
A deliberate inaccuracy in this film: in ancient Rome, it wasnt "Thumbs up for yes, Thumbs down for no", but different hand signals that would confuse the audience in an important scene, so they went modern.
I feel like only a soulless bastard could get through this movie without shedding a tear or two.
My whole Family is gone now (Family that had me) but I still have my Daughters. Every time she says "Go to them" I lose it.
@@tapoemt3995 for me the punch from that same scene is “who will help me carry him” and then the kid walks forward…
“I will see you again, my friend, but not yet. Not yet.”
"What we do in life, echoes in eternity."
Shadows and dust…
My favorite quote from this movie.
Unless it opposes another groups political ideals in a few thousand years, then it gets erased…
That IS a joke…
Sorry, Shaun!
I saw this movie in theatres when it came out, and I was so happy when it won the Oscars for best picture.
I love Mary's facial expressions. Usually those expressions of disgust. Hilarious. ❤️
Fun fact: the story Commodus tells Lucius about the old Emperor Claudius getting betrayed by his family was adapted in the 1970s as a series called “I, Claudius”. The guy who plays Claudius in that series (Derek Jacobi) plays Senator Gracchus in this movie. :)
Great movie. This movie has one of my favorite quotes "I don't pretend to be a man of the people but I do try to be a man for the people" by Gracchus. You know the actor who play Gracchus played Claudius the emperor that is mention in the movie in a great mini series I, Claudius. Other great Russell Crowe movies you should see is A Beautiful Mind, L.A. Confidential ,The Next Three Days. Other great period movies are Rob Roi 1995 with Liam Nissan and The Count of Monte Cristo 2002. A great series about the rome perios is Spartacus
I strongly dislike the Count of Monte Cristo from 2002. I bet it could be made into a great mini series but they did a pretty poor job of cramming the plot into a 2 hour film.
@@frightenedsoul I love the Count of Monte Cristo 2002 it is one of my favorite movies of all time. I saw a couple of adaptions to The Count of Monte Cristo story and read the book and this movie is by far the best version for me. It is even better than the book.
Gladiator was the first DVD I ever owned, 20 years ago.
My first was The Matrix.
@@elzar760 I think that was the first to be released on DVD, right? I remember my friend having it.
@@peterbabicki8252 I’m not sure. But it was what I wanted to see the most in higher definition so it was what I bought to bring home with the player.
My first was Excalibur. After going through the 80's on VHS tapes I was astounded at the quality of the picture. Now it's all just taken for granted.
@@raymontes1030 Behold Excalibur! The sword of power.
"Quintus is sick of you shit" - I might have fallen in love right there lol
Panem et circenses. The CGI of the coliseum was cutting edge when this came out. Recently I watched on RUclips how the fight was done with the Tigers. They were not actually there with Russell. This is one of my all time favourite movies too. :)
People overuse the term CGI which more often than not means 3D animated content generated entirely on a computer.
Most of the work in Gladiator was digital compositing which is technically done on a computer, but from content already shot on film and then scanned to a 'digital intermediate'.
Man when reactors say they've only just now watched Gladiator, that's when I can no longer deny that I'm old 😅
it's always a balance of historical accuracy and entertainment for such Hollywood movies.
12:38 - "The Imperial Senate will no longer be of any concern to us. I've just received word that the Emperor has dissolved the council permanently. The last remnants of the Old Republic have been swept away." - Star Wars
Luna is Precious and you are 100% right Cats are the BEST Medicine❤❤❤
Mari: "He seems to be taking it OK-ish"
John Cena: "ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THAT?"
Say it in Chinese so it's believable.
Since you brought up GoT, Jack Gleason drew inspiration from the character of Commodus for his Joffrey character.
This why they both were great actors the love and hate was very convincing to it’s audiences
“What we do in life echoes in eternity!”
Awesome!!!
Back when this movie was released, it's responsible for the increased interest in the ancient Rome, not that I'm complaining.
Marij. I used to fall asleep to this soundtrack and LOTR soundtrack for many years. They are both amazing pieces of work.
Like others have said, “Rome” and “Spartacus” are two great series you should check out. And a third that is amazing that is not Roman, is “Dark”. Anyway, not only the soundtrack and score of this film is good, but the surround sound editing is amazing. The sound at 7:34 of the sword flying through the air still gives me chills.
Oh yeah, nice intro and outro. 😉
Poor Mary, she was about to explode of rage! lol We all felt this way watching this movie. Fun Fact: The actor who played Joffrey in Game of Thrones said he modeled his performance after this Evil character in Gladiator. When he said that I was like "it makes all kind of sense". Although yea they never showed Joffrey to possess any humanity. Any desire to be loved, etc....
gladiator is in my top 3 movies of all time... the ending is both the happiest and saddest ending ever at the same time😢😃 and that soundtrack is just glorious!!
u definitely shud watch "the last samurai" it's another absolutely beautiful movie
The part where you said, "He can't die cause Gladiator.....OMG Mary"
That part cracked me up, seeing the realization of putting the pieces together with your facial expressions.
8:30 it's absolutely heart wrenching.
The music at the end is goddamn beautiful omg
Belated CONGRATS on your graduation, Mary!
What a great flick to view and react to. Please enjoy the end credits soundtrack (again) by Hans Zimmer and the incredible voice of Lisa Gerrard :)
ruclips.net/video/o2ZiIPEorP0/видео.html
Russell won best Best actor in a leading role at the Oscars, and gave honors to Joaquin Phoenix for his role as the emperor...
without discrediting Crowe, the best performance in this film is from Phoenix
Mary, were you not entertained? Glad you enjoyed this masterpiece.
GOTTA WATCH “ROME”!! One of the greatest HBO series ever!! Only got like 2 seasons because there was no money to be made in product placement!!
Yeash
What do you mean “no product placement?” They hocked the Guild of Miller’s in like every episode. THE GUILD OF MILLERS USES ONLY THE FINEST GRAINS! TRUE ROMAN BREAD FOR TRUE ROMANS!
It's historical worldbuilding is widely believed to have paved the way for "Game Of Thrones" by showing what was possible on the small screen.
@@gawainethefirst The Lictors guild
@@gawainethefirst ahem, no MONEY in product placement.
Compared to a contemporary show like Entourage, where they could drive up in that brand new car, sport the latest watch, or drink the latest liquor.
In Rome where they might have gotten away with calling a pair of sandals Nike Air Jesus or something.
Maij your are the best person to react to this movie your depth and breath of intellectual knowledge along with your high level of emotional intelligence. Make you the perfect person to delve into the phycological and moral conundrums that arise in this movie. Which makes you one of the best reactors out there. Keep it up.
While the crowd in Rome would have forgotten him if he was killed Maximus's Legions would not. He was a respected General and loved by his men.
His Legion would have march on Rome.
"Quintus is sick of your shit."
I want that T-shirt.
Never heard anybody say 'Quintus is sick of your shit!' before... made me laugh!
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!?! ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED NOW!?! Winner of 5 Oscars including Best Picture.
Loved the little questioning of if you'd be into this, if you were raised in that area at that time.
Especially when you caught yourself cheering for him lol
Derek Jacoby, who plays Roman senator Gracchus, is in this movie because he was the star of an amazing BBC miniseries called: ‘I Claudius’. It’s about the Emperors of Rome from the end of Augustus, through the long reign of Tiberius, the insanity of Caligula, to finally Claudius himself. The interesting thing about it is it’s done as a lurid soap opera type presentation. I highly recommend it.
My favorite movie. I couldn't even tell you how much I've seen it.
I'm digging the new retro/lo-fi intro! And yeah, the music in this movie is amazing. I love playing the final three songs in succession (Elysium, Honor Him, Now We Are Free), easily one of my favorite pieces from any movie soundtrack.
"Not yet". Perfect ending.
The quintessential guy movie and one of my favorite (and most quoted) of all time. Thank you for picking this.
Rome is fantastic, its one of my favorites as well as Deadwood that HBO made.
",SPARTACUS BLOOD AND SAND" the series was from 2010.
I love Comodus as a vilain, maybe because of the epic performance by Phoenix... but you can see how completely tormented and torn he is in every sceene.
So the Joker murdered Albus Dumbedore, had Jor-El’s family killed and lusts after Hippolyta.
THAT is diabolical!!
Mari little fun fact… the man who played Joffery in Game of Thrones got A LOT of inspiration for his character from Commedus in this movie and also another ancient emperor Caligula… their callousness and cruelty
13:35 the first gladiator event wasn’t a fight, it was an historical recreation of a battle, the gladiators were expected to lose.
Movie 'A Beautiful Mind ' is another great movie with this same actor and it's based on a true story. I think you'd really like it.
Happy graduation, Mari! What we do on RUclips echoes in eternity! Let's gooo! 😌💐❤
Normally it's kind of sad in reactions when the movie frame is off, because you can't see what's going on in that moment, but in your case there's a strategically placed cute kitty in that place, so it's actually even :)
I’m so so so happy that you reacted to this movie!!!
I think you will LOVE. The HBO ROME series. It’s truly amazing!
I, Claudius was a great series based on Rome, the actor who played the head Senator in Gladiator played Emperor Claudius in I, Claudius.
Derek Jacobi, one of the greatest Shakespearean actors of all time. Love him as the Chorus in _Henry V_, and as Hamlet in the BBC _Hamlet_. (He was also Claudius -- not Roman emperor Claudius, Danish monarch Claudius -- in the Branagh Hamlet, but I don't love that performance as much as the other two.). Of course he also had memorable roles in everything from Doctor Who to the medieval detective monk in Cadfael.
Another fun fact - The actor who played Proximo (Oliver Reed) died during the filming of the movie. They had to CGI him in at the end.
I wouldn't call that a "fun" fact.
I’m old. I saw this in the theater. It’s my one of my desert island movies. The Roman Empire fascinates me as well.
I say this every time someone watches this film for the first time... as Russell Crowe said in accepting the Oscar, while it is a different story, this film was inspired by the original "gladiator movie"... Spartacus (1960). I am always amazed by how many people today have never seen it.
This is my favourite film. It's beautifully filmed, the music is gorgeous and it's so atmospheric. Which is juxtaposed with the blood and violence so graphically. Absolutely amazing film. We did go to Rome after watching this and I got the chills in the Coliseum. I've always been fascinated by Roman history, so to actually stand in the Coliseum was just mind blowing for me.
Fun fact...the man who played Senator Gracchus is Derek Jacobi, who actually played a Roman Emperor himself in the 1976 BBC series I Claudius. It ran for 12 episodes, and was brought to America by PBS. It was one of the few TV programs my Parents let me watch back then, because it was "educational." I would not recommend the series for a reaction, unless you really really love it...but it is well worth watching for anybody that is interested in the Roman Empire.
The music is really similar to pirates because Hans Zimmer reused a lot of the core themes from Gladiator in potc.
Also because the combat theme is ripped straight out of Holst's The Planets: Mars
@@ariochiv I love Hans but he’s known for that honestly. Like interstellar theme and Phillip glass: m.ruclips.net/video/_4Vt0UGwmgQ/видео.html
Except the original POTC Theme was by Klaus Badelt. Zimmer only scored the sequels.
@@frightenedsoul It wouldn't bother me so much if I hadn't seen a making-of documentary in which he talked about composing specifically that piece of music, and made no mention of Holst.
One of my FAVORITE movies of all time!! So well done, so impactful! I still have that end battle engraved in my brain, it lives rent free. Especially those sweet fist combos 🥲😉
“My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius!
Father to a murdered son
Husband to a murdered wife……
And I will have my vengeance 😡”
Ooohhh always gives me shivers, so good! 💯❤️🔥
The actor who plays Marcus Aurelius is the same man who played Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter's movies
Wow ! Been waiting for this !!! Wouldve loved this as a 2part thing but guess we should support the Patreon! Lol keen
They called gladiators barley men because that's mostly what they ate. Alexander is also a fantastic film with an amazing soundtrack.
Congrats on your graduation! Once again sorry about the loss of your cat. :( I had to say goodbye to my sweet dog last week. She was 15 years old and had multiple chronic illnesses and it was just time to let her go, but it still didn't make it any easier. Hope you're doing well.
(your falls as a son is my failure as a fother) a quote that a fother cant say to his son. its the best part for me in this film
Rome is amazing it shows how rich and regular and soldiers lived and it doesn't hold back
Congratulations on your graduation! Great reaction video! I hope you have a great day!Re is a great show that was on HBO for 2 seasons and Sparticus is another great series I think it was on starz.
I always thought that the chair was on the other side of the room, then you just reach over and pet your cat - my mind was blown.
"That was the worst time to eat a cookie!"......LMAO!!!...omg I laughed so hard....thanks for that Mary ;)
HBO’s Rome is basically Game of Thrones in a historical context.
It's definitely not an uplifting movie, you're left sad but satisfied. It's great to see someone experience this amazing movie. The acting (especially Joaquin Phoenix), the visuals, the music, every part of it is perfect. And in a movie filled with amazing moments and lines, Maximus' speech to Commodus after taking off his helmet gives me goosebumps every time
Great reaction. I have only watched a few of your reactions so far to great movies. So far they have all been wonderful. (even when I know what is going to happen I still feel for you)
The cat couldn't contain his excitement during the whole movie, I think I saw him move at one point.
"My Name Is Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander Of The Armies Of The North, General Of The Felix Legions And Loyal Servant To The True Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father To A Murdered Son, Husband To A Murdered Wife. And I Will Have My Vengeance, In This Life Or The Next."
One of the greatest movie quotes of all time.
MY NAME IS MAXIMUS DECIMUS MERIDIUS
FATHER TO A MURDERED SON
HUSBAND TO A MURDERED WIFE
Hi Mari. I love your videos. I'm a subscriber. I LOVE this movie. I've seen it a lot of times but I'm watching this reaction video because of your kitten in the chair next to you. SO CUTE!
The definitive tv mini series on Rome is "I Claudius".
Imagine being one of those soldiers in the circle when the emperor was yelling about having his family killed in graphic details. Some of them probably have families and wouldn't be thrilled about any of that.
Proximo, played by Oliver Reed, died during filming. His last scene was cobbled together from previous, unused footage. That’s why his very last scene was him just uttering "Ha" to Maximus. Didn't Joaquin Phoenix do a wonderful British accent? Love this movie!
I'll recommend again the film "Glory", a film set in the American Civil War which tells the story of the 54th Massachusetts regiment. One of the first all-Black units in the Union Army. It's a true story based on the letters of it's commanding officer, Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, and several news accounts written at the time.
i wento to se Gladiator live some years ago, and Lisa Gerrard singing now we are free put me to tears instantly...
The tigers are filmed separately and then composited into the frame.
If you like historically based films with swords 'n stuff, try Kingdom of Heaven - also a Ridley Scott joint! But watch the director's cut, it is much better than the theatrical. It has an AMAZING cast.
My favorite movie ever
This is a movie that whenever it’s on tv, I stop in that channel to see it. So underrated.
LMAO i have been watching quite some gladiatro reaction movies, you are by far the funniest and the smartest! great content!
and with this i have now watched ALL of your videos on this channel :)
7:42 - Yes, _Rome_ is a good series. Though it becomes a bit rushed toward the end, when they realised they weren't getting one more season.
The Rome series is very good, unfortunately they knew they were going to be cancelled and had to cram too much content into the second season.
It's very violent, but I really enjoyed the Spartacus series as well.
Great job, Mary! Love your kitten!
Congratulations on graduating Mary! Well done! 👍
