Will wasn't angry because Elizabeth took the necklace. He was mad because her story confirmed that his father was in-fact a Pirate, not who Will thought he was.

I love how helplessly romantic Mary always is. She is always so cutely aggravated when characters could be kissing, but aren't.
Kind of annoying really, as if the movie isn't good enough if there's no kissing.

What the compass points to is explained in another movie.
Fun fact, the Captain Jack drunken mannerisms were not intended as part of the character. Depp created them himself. Depp was repeatedly told to stop, but he basically said if they don't want it they can fire him. Depp turned out to be right, as it's one of the most memorable traits of the character.
Barbosa is my absolute favorite part of this movie, because the actor did such an amazing job.
Geoffrey Rush is definitely an awesome actor
It blew my mind when I watched The Kings Speech, and realized that Geoffrey Rush played Barbossa... Another great movie, made greater by Geoffrey Rush.
Rush was fantastic, I agree. But I have to say Bill Nighy supersedes him later in the franchise as Davy Jones.
Jonathan Pryce.. From trying to catch Captain Jack Sparrow to becoming the High Sparrow.
Saw this in theaters when I was 11. Such a fun experience as a kid. You felt like you were getting away with something, because it was a Disney movie, but it was so dark and violent (for a kid that is). Everyone at school was talking about it when this came out.
It's basically a "kid's movie" out of time as it wasn't that uncommon for older movies/stories to be a lot darker then what's typically considered "safe for kids". I grew up in the 80's watching Indiana Jones movies or The Goonies.
@@RedDogDragon Yeah now that you mention it, it was a very kidsy 80's style film. Right on the edge of adult with the death and blood it had, but still really kid friendly. Such a great film!
My grandparents took me because they were huge into Disney and I remember walking out totally energized saying "that was awesome!" with every one else while my grandparents were in total disbelief saying they couldn't believe that was a Disney movie. They expected more Mary Poppins / Sound of Music but I still love this one.
Barbossa is played by the great Australian actor Geoffrey Rush, who co stars in "The Kings Speech" alongside your boyfriend, but he starred in another film based on a real life character in the 90s called "Shine", which is where he first received international notice, and launched his career.

I remember seeing this in the theater and being skeptical about a movie based on a Disney World ride. I was so very surprised at how good it was, and how well it was produced. There are a couple nods to the ride, like when the prisoners are trying to entice the dog holding the keys by wave a bone in front of him.
"You can keep doing that forever, the dog is never going to move." (LOL)
The Movie was based upon 'The Secret of Monkey Island', but for some legal reason or something it was re-labeled as the Disney Ride
I watched it in a large theatre on the premiere, and it was amazing. One of the only movies I've watched, where there was spontaneous standing ovations after it ended.
I was equally surprised. And the music is magnificent.
Created for Disneyland 1967. Re-created for Disneyworld.
I'm so glad that she noticed Jack taking that medallion and understood the consequences of that. Almost every first time watcher seems to miss that moment and are then very confused why Jack became a skeleton when Barbossa stabbed him. Very refreshing to see someone go "Oh, no he stole it! He stole it so he can not die!"

The music in this series is top-notch. Having an orchestral background, I'm sure you'll love it.
After this, you need to see Master and Commander: Far Side of the World. It came out around the same time, it's another movie about ships, takes place in the same era, and it got horribly overshadowed by Pirates of the Caribbean. But it's pretty much universally agreed upon as the best Age of Sail movie ever made.
Not same Era. PotC is in the mid 1700's and M&C is in early 1800s

Great watch, Thanks! fyi...the dog with the keys is a take on the ride at Disneyland, which, understandably gets overlooked by most reactors(especially those outside the U.S.A.). As a Southern California native we have many fond memories of the ride and the movie has several scenes that pull from the ride! The guy laying in the pig slop, the pirate balancing on the barrels, and the guys chasing the ladies is from the ride as well. Maybe a trip to Disneyland should be in your future, lol
the shocking thing that gets forgotten because the movie is SOOOOOO good is that this is a movie that's based on a RIDE lol... a disney ride at disneyland! and the dog holding the keys with the prisoners calling him is a reference from the ride.
Sadly, same year they thought making Haunted Mansion movie would be a good idea. Not so much.

There is a short clip on RUclips of Depp in his Pirate garb at the Disneyland Pirates ride. People thinks he is an animatronic and freak out when they realize he's real.
pronunciation in american english for caribbean is weird. if we're talking about it in a pirate context, it comes out 'car-i-BE-an' (emphasis on the third syllable), but in every other context we say it 'car-RIB-be-an' (emphasis on the second syllable).

I have always seen it as 'car-RIB-be-an' as an adjective and 'the car-i-BE-an' as a proper noun referring to the location.
Fun fact: the man who welcomes Jack to Port Royal is played by Guy Siner, who is best known for the role of Lt. Gruber on the comedy series "Allo! Allo!"
We played this for our marching band festival my senior year in highschool. The movie came out my freshman year and that year 4 bands did the score at the festival.
I was a percussionist in band, not orchestra. But our high school orchestra was going to do a medley of songs from the movies and they needed a percussionist on the drum set to accompany them and I got to do that part. But our orchestra was pure strings, whereas the band was brass and woodwinds, so no flute players in the medley I played in lol. And I also bought the piano sheet music for the movies, though the best one for piano was a song you'll hear in the next movie. But yeah, the music is so epic from these movies.
I was at a bar once with a friend and there was a guy there dressed as Jack Sparrow. And it was not near Halloween. We mentioned him to the bartender and she said he comes in every Friday dressed like that.
One thing I always wondered, since they can't die and can walk underwater and are drawn to the cursed gold so well to be able to find it in a closet on Elizabeth, so I don't understand why they were so scared of Elizabeth dropping it in the ocean. They can just jump down and grab it they weren't far from shore so it wasn't deep.
We don't know how far it actually was from the shore, and how deep the water is there. I don't think it can be immediately next to the land though, overwise Elisabeth could have just... jumped and swam back when they refused to row her over. So I think it may be quite a bit out.
The worry (I assume) is that they won't find it again. The sea floor is large and dark and if there's corals or seegrass or anything of the sort here, finding that piece of gold could be really difficult.
Not impossible of course, but still something they probably want to avoid.
This would have worked better if the ship was moving, so they wouldn't be sure where exactly it dropped. I agree that as it is, it was a little flimsy.
The Pirates movies are a fun bunch. And, for future reference, Jack's compass takes you to your heart's true desire.

He's asking where the Black Pearl's home port is. The 'berth' is where it 'parks', where it lays anchor for rest, recreation, resupplying, and doing business.

I studied to work as a fabricator of orthotics and prosthetics, and the first place I worked when I graduated was in a shop in Greenville, NC where Eastern Carolina University is located. The university is about an hour's distance from the coast, the same coastal area that was the haunt of Capt Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard the Pirate. His impress is all through that area, as he not only had a business as a pirate at sea, but also spent some time ashore in the area working another business incognito. Part of that impress was carried over to Eastern Carolina University, whose school and football mascot was Peedee the Pirate.
I must have worked there for 4 months before realizing Peedee was represented with a pegleg and a hook for one of his hands; the very purpose for why I had taken a job in the area.

This is the best movie adaptation of a theme park ride ever made.
Great reaction. This first Pirates movie is still my favorite of the series. For a more serious tall sailing ship movie, try Master and Commander The Far Side of the World. Fantastic cast and movie!
I still remember the ride at Disney World in Florida’s when I was a kid back in the 80’s. I loved that the movie incorporated a lot of Easter eggs from the ride. Ah the nostalgia.

In case nobody's mentioned it yet, Johnny Depp's "Sparrow" is literally a Keith Richards impersonation (ask your Grandfather). Keith also makes a cheeky cameo in a later movie of the series.
Keith will outlive the young people who aren't familiar with him. Does he have the curse?

I am a percussionist myself and have played songs from Pirates of the Caribbean... So much fun...
That is so cool that you played and knew the music so well, as it was the soundtrack that really sparked my deep interest in film scores! (Jurassic Park and Meet Joe Black were my earlier favorites, but Pirates really made it all click into place!) To this day I love guessing who did the music in a movie and also learning about newer composers as the music strikes me as particularly fresh and expressive 🥰
As a side note, I had never really seen Depp's acting before this movie, but have loved his performances since then in literally everything I've seen! Truly a great talent. I hope he can get a fresh reset in his career to be able to share more of his craft with the world :)
Can you react to the accountant. it's my favorite Ben Affleck film. I think it's right up there in your taste of movies.
I knew this movie was going to be good, as soon as Jack came to port on that sinking dinghy. He just casually steps off the mast and strolls to the harbormaster on the dock as the boat hits bottom. I knew any director who could capture such a humorous and suave entrance of the main character will have a lot more fun in store for the audience.

Just kidding, the way in which a classic story, timing of who is cast, and then to completion of a piece, comes together as you said. Sitting in between each orchestra section and experiencing the affect and emotion of the piece, is like sitting in a theatre and seeing a movie (like this) classic for the first time and before you know it's a classic. When you hear the music, you are transported in time to the moment in which you first heard that piece ;)
The best movie in the "based on an amusement park ride" genre.
10:12 -- the scene where the pirates are trying to summon the dog makes a lot more sense, if you've been on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.
The "not possible/not probable" scene always makes me chuckle.
I've played POTC as 1st violin loads of times and the score is brilliant, it's great fun

Ahh interesting! I think the reason it worked though is because no one ever actually killed her. (I believe that it isn't until a person has been "killed" that they become undead, including Jack.) So actually that's funny, if Barbossa _had_ shot her at the end and Will/Jack hadn't spilled their own blood yet, she would have been all skeletal and just fine, lol

Great reaction and sparkling commentary to a witty, fun movie Bright Angel. Knowing the music from your days in the orchestra must have made it an even more entertaining experience. You should let us know when you recognize soundtracks you may have played from other films. Sometimes the music makes a film just that much better.
11:57 - to answer your question, this is somewhat based on real pirate codes. However, there was no "universal" code like depicted in this film, each individual pirate ship had its own unique code and set of rules. Essentially each ship functioned like an unfixed sailing nation, with its inhabitants like citizens to its established rules and system of hierarchy.
1-3 are great films.... After that they pretty much use Jack just as a laughing stick

I like what they did with Norrington in Pirates, usually his character type (the man with the love interest already assigned to him) is a douchebag or arrogant jerk that's self obsessed but Norrington is a honourable man willing to bend the rules depending on the morals of the options he has. His character type would usually use his position of power to beat or imprison Will as soon as he steps slightly out of line even going as far as trying to kill him but Pirates has a better story intended for his character in this trilogy.
The score is actually reused from Gladiator starring Russell Crowe. The score piece was called (The Barbarian Horde) and the part you’re looking for is timed stamped at 5:38 seconds

I am a percussion player in an orchestra. This is the most favorite movie theme piece to play. Has so much fun playing it
I loved this so much when it came out. Saw it in the theater with my brother and mom. Us teens came out of the theater all pumped, swaggering around pretending to sword fight with "dun dun dun dun dun" imitating the amazing music. Such a fun movie, not to be taken too seriously (don't get me started on the corset inaccuracies), and yes the music is FANTASTIC. The soundtrack is one of the few physical CDs that I still own, and I listened to it countless times. Not good to listen to while driving, because it makes your drive VERY FAST.
It's so true though, all the swooshing sword fighting and adventurous, movement-inducing music, haha! ❤️🏴☠️🦜
(And uhhmygoosh yes thank you for mentioning the corsets, lol -- I totally get triggered by that in movies now since learning their true history!)

Johnny Depp is really good in breathing these characters to life. Captain Jack Sparrow and Edward Scissorhands are my favorite characters of his.
The two men guarding the ship are seen in nearly all the movies.
You should watch Our Flag Means Death!! It’s a comedy pirate show written by Taika Waititi about Stede Bonnet, the Gentleman Pirate and Black Beard! Super Funny, super heartfelt, and only 10 episodes!! 🏴☠️💕🏳️🌈
Taika was in it and a producer but has no writing credits for it. It is a great show though and I strongly recommend it!
Jack Sparrow's mannerisms was an impersonation of Keith Richards (of the Rolling stones).
The sequel (Dead Man's Chest) is my favorite movie of the series. It is not as good as this one, but the CGI is so amazing and revolutionary.

As a child, the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland was thrilling and even scary. Oddly, most people pronounce it with a bee, like honey bee, bumblebee, etc. Pirates of the Ca-ri-BEE-an even though if they talk about going to a holiday to the beaches there they say Ca-RIH-be-an. They emphaise different sillables and it feels silly when they do not.
I've always pronounced it BEE when a noun and RIH when an adjective. I'm not totally sure why but it made sense to me.

The dog holding the keys at the jail cell is a joke that came from the ride of the same name. The dog on the ride is just a figure of a dog as the pirates in the jail are begging the dog for the keys.

As much as I love Jack and Barbossa, it can not be denied that Commodore Norington is kind of the real hero. He is a loyal, upright man with morals and a sense of justice but not to the point of being an emotionless executioner. He risked everything for the girl he loved and when he found out she loved someone else he had the strength and wisdom to let her go... that's some heavy stuff. In every story, other than a pirate story where the protagonists are mischievous criminals, he would have been the protagonist or his best side-kick.
That's why Norington is probably my third favourite character of the movie and it's such a refreshing take on the "law enforcer bad guy" that in most other movies would be a pedantic, envious and arrogant bastard that just exists to get beaten/outsmarted by the criminal protagonists.

Yeah honestly I've always really liked Norrington! He's obviously not perfect but he's honorable and observant and has the best intentions. ...Now that I think about it again I actually kind of prefer him to Will because he isn't rash and is actually capable of thinking beyond his own emotions, lol...sorry Will! 😅

About ten years ago I was playing my little Applause Travel guitar next to the Trader Joes' entrance, just for the heck of it. After a few minutes Johnny Depp stepped up, at a respectful distance, and said "nice guitar" and I told him a few facts about this Ovation gem. We chatted goofychat for a few minutes and he said "be seein' you" and I asked "what's your name?" and he shouted back "Cisco!". Trader Joes on Vine Street, Hollywood.

Some sailors mutinied for different reasons and if the mutiny went well they became pirates, since they had no obligations to fulfill and could travel anywhere for supplies. That must have happened to the guy with the wide sideburns.
Today's pirates must have very different origins, more similar to the guerrillas that exist in various third world countries.
Something in your reactions tells me you'd never fall in love with a man with a glass eye. Call it intuition.

If you notice, Barbossa is almost always on the left side of the screen when he’s sharing the shot with another actor. Geoffrey Rush asked for this specifically, because he knew that the eye tends to read an image left-to-right, and he thought that if he was sharing the screen with Depp, Bloom or Knightley, no one would ever even see him if he was on the left and wearing his gross pirate make-up! There’s an actor that knows his craft!
Also, if you watch The Rock (or any Bruckheimer movie of the same period, really!) after this, you’ll get deja vu vibes because some of the music cues are almost the same! Hans Zimmer scored both, and he was sticking with a specific style.
I can answer the "Caribbean" question. I was told by an island local on a sailing trip that originally the islands were inhabited by natives named Caribs. He said "Cuhrib..."sounds off to most Islanders, but he didn't really mind it either way.
If you like the score, this is actually very strongly taken from Gladiator... Because Hans Zimmer did that score too and reused it here in Pirates. Just that it became more famous with Pirates.
From what I remember, the compass points towards what Jack's heart desires. So once he got the Black Pearl, it now points him to treasure/adventure.
The cave scene with all the treasure in a big chest is in the Disneyland ride, with a skeleton. The ride is a simulation of riding in a boat, going a little out to sea ( this is all actually on a track but with real water ) in one area at night ( walls curve into ceiling, painting design and lighting effects ) and in the "distance" are two ships firing cannons at each other, then you go into a "sea cave" with a downhill thrill moment and then all these animatronic pirates doing scenes as you go by.
