Floor’s parents being at this show….How proud they must be to see the positive and joyous effect their daughter and this band has on thousands of people must be almost overwhelming for them.
    Sensory overload… Nightwish style.
The band that can call it “The Greatest Show on Earth” and deliver on all points…incredible

When you go back and take a closer look at the lyrics, there are some pretty specific terms used that are peculiar to the field of science they are singing about. A lot of reactors ask questions about some of them. I put together this little glossary of all the ones I hear questioned from time to time. For your future reference:
Archean horizons - A term from geology referring to the rocks of the Archeozoic Period of the PreCambrian Era.
The spoken-word portions are narrations by Professor Richard Dawkins, evolutionary biologist from Oxford University. He held the Oxford Chair for Public Understanding of Science from 1995 to 2008. The excerpts are from his book. At the Wembley performance, he appeared on stage with Nightwish to speak the narrations.
Pristine Gaia - Gaia was the ancient Greek goddess of the Earth, now often used to refer to the primordial ecosystem when all the continents were joined.
Opus perfectum - Obviously Latin for "a perfect composition" or creation.
Goldilocks Zone - A semi-formal term used by astrophysicists to describe the stable orbital zones around any star which are "not too hot, not too cold, but juuuust right" for the existence of liquid water, based on their diameter, heat and luminosity output, and radiation field. Obviously this refers to the region where a planet's environment is suitable for the development of life.
LUCA - LUCA is an acronym for a formal term used by evolutionary biologists that stands for "Last Universal Common Ancestor." It is the most recent population group of organisms which shared common ancestry with every currently surviving species on Earth.
Devonian - A geology term pertaining to the portion of the Paleozoic Era dominated by ocean fish, prior to the advent of amphibians and reptiles.
Aeons - Aeons is just a fancy, ancient spelling of "eons," vast periods of time.
Ion channels - A term used in biology and medicine to refer to the osmotic pressure balance maintained across cell walls by the relative concentrations of various metal ions in aqueous solution, usually sodium and potassium. The opening or closing of transport pathways through the cell walls for certain molecules, mediated by the ion balance, are called "ion channels." Thus, the "magic" of life is permitted to exist because the exquisite balancing of ion concentrations on each side of the membrane either open the channel and allow entry of molecules necessary for life or close the channel to exclude other molecules.
Little Lucy of the Afars - Refers to the fossil remnants of the female dubbed "Lucy," found in the region of Africa that was known, in ancient times, as "The Territory of Isis and Afars" (nothing to do with the modern day meaning of that term "Isis") now roughly corresponding to the countries of Somalia and Djibouti. Lucy is believed to be the single known example of the common humanoid ancestor that spawned homo sapiens, Neanderthals, and Cro Magnons. ...And the Geico Caveman. LOL
Ionia - Ancient Greece, often credited as the birthplace of modern scientific thought, logic, and learning. So, when Marco sings, "Enter Ionia" it is not saying that some person "enters" the City-State of Ionia. Rather, it is introducing the scene in the Greatest Show where the City-State of Ionia itself "enters" the world stage of history.
Yes, Tuomas Holopainen is a deep thinker. And exceptionally intelligent. Much of symphonic metal in general, and Nightwish most specifically, is for fellow deep thinkers. That's why we dedicated fans love them so much. It is such a breath of fresh air to have great bands that are actually intelligent, sophisticated, consummate professionals when contrasted against the air-headed, fluffy crap babbled at us by overpaid spoiled brats that we are fed by the dysfunctional "entertainment" industry we suffer under here in the U.S. I had the honor of meeting these six Nightwish people in person in Miami last year, and they are just as nice, personable, and professional in person as they appear in interviews. Not a single diva among them! :D -----Cheers!

Floor joined Nightwish as guest vocalist in the middle of the Imaginarium World Tour in October 2012 in Seattle. That was the concert where she had 48 hours to learn the entire set-list. With Wacken 2013, she had been with the band for about 9 months. What many people don't realize at first from this particular production is: Troy, the multi-instrumentalist, also sings backup here and on other songs. His vocals blend very subtly with the others.

You misunderstood, this was not bigger than Wacken. Wacken is the largest metal festival in Europe with about 80000 visitors. But this show was the final perfomance of their world tour in their home country, which is why they went all out on effects, so the production was bigger. There were about 20000 in that stadium.

The fireworks work with the music because of a Time Code track. Every song is on a computer, in Pro Tools, two of the tracks for each song are a click track and a Time Code track specifically for the Lighting & Effects(here the fireworks for example). So everything is timed, and even the band can never be off timing wise with a Click Track. Other tracks are the orchestra, choirs, backing vocals, yadda, yadda, yadda. What your hearing for real are the lead vocals, keyboards, drums, guitar and bass, and the several instruments Troy plays on stage.

When you get a chance you should listen to the ending of this song. It is technically the last part of the song and I for one think it is beautiful. Richard Dawkins is the voice speaking and he does more during the last part. This song is from their last album Endless Forms Most Beautiful. You got it right Brian. It's about life on earth and it's evolution, and...did you catch the evolution of music within it also? Mozart to EDM, even a Metallica riff. The budget was bigger for this show. Not the crowd. The Wacken crowd was over 82,000 people. This one was a bit over 20,000. The budget was huge because of all the fireworks, the lighted island stage out in the middle of the crowd, just everything was really done up for this show in a big way. I love this concert so much. This song was the finisher. You guys stopped it, but the band walks out onto that island and has a bit of an intimate moment with the crowd, showing their appreciation. It's pretty cool. Great reaction! Stan, you looked mystified and confused. It is very understandable. Brian you got it! This grand concept is hard to capture in a 3 hour documentary let alone a 20 minute song. This is a song about evolution from the forming of the Planets (keyboard intro), to the forming of Earth (Pipes added & opera vocal).
    Opera lyrics
    Archaean horizon
    The first sunrise
    On a pristine Gaea
    Opus perfectum
Somewhere there, us sleeping-(whispered by Floor)
Then the evolution of Earth from a molten rock to develop flora and fauna.
Enter LUCA (last universal common ancestor)
LUCA is the most recent common ancestor of all current life on Earth. If you believe in Evolution vs Creationism.
Then the evolution of animals and proto humans.
    We are one
    We are a universe
    Forbears of what will be
    Scions of the Devonian sea
    Aeons pass
Writing the tale of us all
    A day-to-day new opening
For the greatest show on Earth
    Enter Life
Then comes the toolmaker- leading to homo sapiens. The ominous vocal and red molten backdrop should tell you a little bit about the bands ecological beliefs.
With the beginning of MAN comes the beginning of the END. Thus the animals running from the fire, which represents man the HUNTER.
Then the struggle not to kill ourselves off and the planet.
Man, he took his time in the sun
    Had a dream to understand
    A single grain of sand
    He gave birth to poetry
But one day’ll cease to be
Greet the last light of the library
    We were here!
Now for something a little lighter. Check out "Ghost River" or "Everdream" from Wacken 2013.

Also only 20k+ at this show, but Floors parents were in the front row of this concert. Also, you cut this short, you really should watch Nightwish videos till the very end and this one more than others.

This is a masterpiece about evolution, since de formation of the universe till today.
The spoken parts (you missed 2 of them, the one where you finished and one other after that) it's the voice of Richard Dawkins, evolucionist biology.
This song it's full of small details, you can even listen to a Metallica "Enter Sandman" riff in the part dedicated do the story of music.
    Like your reactions very much.
    Thanks for this one.

A month or so ago I started a journey back south after a week long hike in the Finnish Lapland. The first song that came on was "A lifetime of adventure" from this album and I almost had to pull over because my sunglasses fogged up so badly. The combination of total exhaustion, not having heard any music in more than a week and the immense beauty I had been in the middle of was a powerful experience.

Let's talk about their crew. Most all of them have been with the band since the very beginning so they know what is required, Their sound tech Tero is also one of their studio recording engineers, Mika Jussila has been the one to mix and master nearly all their albums, Their management team has also been with them since the very beginning, so you can see why their shows are the pinnacle of perfection, no matter whether club or huge open air festivals.

This is THE *longue* *durée* song... it's all inclusive and all covering and it's awesome - do yourself a big favour and see it to the very end - it`'s less of a mere "song" and more of a piece in the classical tradition, there's a lot of "Richard Wagner by the way of Hans Zimmer" in this composition ;).
Very nice to see your reaction, it's ever so slightly more reflected and adult than most^^!

This is like one of those "science set to music" shows they'd put on at my local science planetarium when I was a kid, only more hard core. I don't know which is more impressive-the combined artistry of the musicians, vocalists, and lyrics, or the fans who love this music & know all the words. Much more intellectually challenging than the simple fun pop tunes on so many stations. Which I'm not bashing, mind you, just being aware that a good vocabulary is probably the first step towards being able to properly appreciate Nightwish.

To expand on what Ann has said. Yes it is indeed about evolution. Tuomas was studying to be a biologist at the beginning of Nightwish, it got to the point where he had to make a choice of staying in school or doing the music thing full time. I for one am glad he chose the way he did. The name of the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful is part of a Charles Darwin quote from origins of the species. When they performed at Wembly arena Richard Dawkins comes on stage at the end of the song and recites it.

Commenting late, and you may have been told already, but Floor started out with Nightwish as a fill-in, as a favor for Tuomas, the keyboard player. Her first stage appearance with the band after Anette left on September 29, 2012 was only 48 hours later in Seattle, WA on October 1st. The tour continued with the last concert being the Wacken venue on Aughust 11, 2013. Throughout the remainder of that tour, she was never an official member of Nightwish until Tuomas called her on October 9, 2013 and offered her the gig permanently. The news was made public on November 29th along with the release of the Wacken DVD. I will also add that Floor was in a band called ReVamp and recovering from burnout when she got the call in 2012. The evening of the Wacken Music Festival 2013, the universe was aligned perfectly, because that concert could not have been any better for all members. Glad you've enjoyed the journey thus far. Keep rockin'!! 😊❤🤘🤘

Tuomas plays the keys, does some mixing, some effects and controls the backing track on the fly!!!! AND head-bangs/windmills!!! - HOW!?..... Writing 95% of the NIghtwish material too..... I wonder if he hears all of it in his head before he writes it..... and if it torments him because he can never forget it? Maybe it makes playing it more instinctive and natural than a conscious effort? New subscriber from Australia.
