Trigonometry is a lot easier than it looks. Trust me. Here's most of what you need to know: SOHCAHTOA. sin(angle) = opposite / hypotenuse. cos(angle) = adjacent / hypotenuse. tan(angle) = opposite / adjacent. opposite is the length of the line that is NOT touching the corner where it says the angle. adjacent is the length of the line that IS touching the corner where it says the angle. hypotenuse is the length of the diagonal line. I simply memorized it. No cleverness needed.

Optimus Prim You can't let that discourage you from being a pilot. You may have to wait a little longer which isn't the end of the world. My friend is a pilot and she paid for college and flight school all by herself. She had three jobs at once at one point, simple jobs of course. Like Mentour pilot said, "where there is a will, there is a way."

Personally what I'm doing is I'm gonna do a minimum term in an air force as they give free flight training while you get paid doing so and they also give you flight hours that means it's easier to get a airline job

I wouldn't recommend corrective laser surgery. You want to be able to see runway lights clearly at night. With LASIK, you get wicked glare on bright lights.

ICC rules are similar. You can wear glasses to get a CDL, but (depending on your state) your vision needs to be correctable at a certain level that's higher than for a normal car license. And you need to have a spare pair of glasses in your cab.

Tbh, aviation has been my passion since I was a little kid. Often the world can be a challenging place as I was often called different and special. However not in a good way. As while children were playing video games I was studying for any cadet program that would take me. I still am. Becoming an aviator is my one and only goal. Flying is my only other one. I live by the saying "fly till you die" and I will live by it until the day I pass away.

    Hi Mentour,
I have the pleasure to work with you and we know each other personally as we work for the same airline. I am a Cabin Crew though.
As a simple contribution to this interesting discussion from my point of view since I am into the training and, at the beginning, I had the same doubt about maths I bring a couple of items.
I hold a post graduate college degree in Economics so I didn't find any particular obstacles in the Maths that a student pilot gets into the way and I am pretty sure that either an average high school graduate wouldn't, with a quick refresh. We are talking about simple conversions, some basic equations (when it comes to study the difficult ones, the syllabus of the ATPL -the final licence- doesn't require you to study them deeply or... demonstrate any theorem for instance), rules of thumb, percentages, operations in degrees and a bit of geometry and trigonometry as you Mentour well explained here above (in BCN airport?). It doesn't take a rocket scientist, not at all.
    HOWEVER
My personal experience speaks well now: to be a competent and SAFE pilot, the situation you encounter, ESPECIALLY during flying puts you in the condition to make calculations under an considerable amount of stress depending on the person. Doesn't matter how good you planned your flight on the ground, those simple calculation are sometimes to be done quickly and accurately while handling the aircraft: the flight safety is on stake. So, I recommend not to underestimate that a simple calculation in degrees, or about weight, heading, wind vectors is simple on the ground but can be hell of difficult in the air when you're alone in the cockpit trying to consider whether or not your fuel tanks are enough to land in the alternate airport after holding or the wind vector after a sudden runway change when you're about to prepare your approach.
How to handle it? Well, my instructor says that you save your... ehm... by preparing a good flight before, that's the key. Trying to contemplate every possibility with a good safety margin. When it comes to calculate you don't want to encounter a problem in flight you've never faced before, as you may require cold blood, sense of proportions and estimation skills. So far, this golden rule works for me and it will for you all. Fly high!
    C
In here you've got ALL YOU NEED to know and master about Maths and Physics to go for the whole ATPL (Airline Transportation Pilot Licence) course. Nothing more, nothing less.

Very interesting and well put. In fact, congratulations on a thoroughly good channel, you are an excellent presenter! Through my own flying experience, including training, I have found - and I must stress this is my own experience - that some of the "smarter" guys ironically seem to have a harder time, perhaps for the reason you set out here. One guy, who I never actually flew with but who I often overheard in conversation or heard about from others, was a chronic "over-thinker". He was said to be extremely intelligent and from an IT background, but his analytical mindset would perhaps have been put to better use as an avionics engineer as opposed to sitting next to underwhelming mortals like me. 👍

I never considered that eye surgery could be an issue. Of course, there is eye surgery, and there is eye surgery. I'm preparing to get surgery on an eye for a pterygium. A pterygium is a growth in the eye that generally starts at the corner of the eye and extends toward the pupil. As long as it doesn't cover the pupil, they generally discourage surgery, but if the pterygium starts to cover the pupil, surgery is the best option. The surgery is designed to block the growth toward the pupil and doesn't necessarily affect vision. If a vision test after pterygium surgery results in normal vision, I can't see any reason to disallow piloting because there was a surgery.

Don't be too worried about the math, most people can use the most complex engineering formulas if they're done on a daily basis. The scary thing about trigonometry is understanding it, but nobody truly understands all of trig, you just learn applications of it.

Could you make a video discussing the different kinds of ILS/autopilot and how much flying pilots actually do? When I say different kinds of ILS I am talking about airports that only have LOC. Do most major airports have LOC and GS? Why don't airlines fly direct GPS routes instead of VOR to VOR? The savings on fuel and time would be great.

I have a question captain. What specific degree do I need to become an airline pilot and whats the best majors for becoming an airline pilot. Thank you for answer

    • @pizzahut99
      @pizzahut99 8 лет назад +6

Well I may not be the answer you're looking for, but getting a degree in something aeronautical related you have a "better" chance of going for the legacy airlines (I'm talking about the US, I, not sure where you live) but you can get a degree in ANYTHING when you're in college. Depending on the college some don't offer aviation programs, but most colleges offer some "degree" of aviation. The best thing to do is look at all the colleges you'd like to become a part of, and research the kind of degrees and if the regional or "mid" airlines (Like JetBlue, Spirit, Allegiant etc.) and what they want in a person and what you need, flying hours, degrees, licenses, etc. hope this helps in any way :)

I'm slightly above average at maths (B/C in UK) but I'm really good at physics and science where you apply mathematics as I got A in advanced sciences at GCSE.
