Welcome back to my channel guys! In this video I explain different reasons why you have to have a basic (!) understanding of Math and Physics when you want to become an airline pilot. I will tell you about the ATPL subjects which contain calculations and I will share a couple of formula's you will face during your flight training. Apart from that I will share a few examples of calculations an airline pilot makes on a daily basis.
Examples of actual questions of the ATPL Subject Mass & Balance:
Question: The mass and balance information gives: Basic mass: 1 200 kg ; Basic balance arm: 3.00 m Under these conditions the Basic centre of gravity is at 25% of the mean aerodynamic chord (MAC). The length of MAC is 2m. In the mass and balance section of the flight manual the following information is given : Position Arm. front seats : 2.5 m, rear seats : 3.5 m, rear hold : 4.5 m, fuel tanks : 3.0 m. The pilot and one passenger embark; each weighs 80 kg. Fuel tanks contain 140 litres of petrol with a density of 0.714. The rear seats are not occupied.Taxi fuel is negligable.
What is the position of the centre of gravity at take-off (as % MAC)?
Answer: 22 %
Question: Determine the Take-off Mass for the following single engine aeroplane. Given : Standard Empty Mass : 1764 lbs Optional Equipment : 35 lbs Pilot + Front seat passenger : 300 lbs Cargo Mass : 350 lbs Ramp Fuel = Block Fuel : 60 Gal. Trip Fuel : 35 Gal. Fuel density : 6 lbs/Gal.
Answer: 2799 lbs
Question: What is the DOM? The basic empty mass of an aircraft is 30 000 kg. The masses of the following items are : - catering: 300 kg - safety and rescue material: nil - fly away kit: nil - crew (inclusive crew baggage): 365kg - fuel at take-off: 3 000 kg - unusable fuel: 120 kg - passengers, baggage, cargo: 8 000 kg
Answer: The Dry Operating Mass = 30 665 kg
I got average of 6 in math and physics back in high school, never good at them, never understand shit.
I'm now doing ATPL systems with no trouble understanding.
As long as you have common sense understanding of stuff around you in life, don't sweat about the marks, you'll get it if you receive the sufficient training and stick with it from the start of your aviation training

You only need basic math to fly, but you need to somewhat capable of doing simple quick math in your head without a pen a paper. For physics is the same, the training will build you up from the basics.

I think this video could unnecessarily put some aspiring pilots off. On a day to day basis I do very basic maths... the only time you need to learn a bit more is when doing your ATPL exams. In the real world it's very minimal.
This is very reassuring, thank you! I was terrible at maths at school, especially arithmetic, but I think (hope) now I'm older that I might actually find it easier because I can think more logically etc.

I doubt the training only incoporates that. i mean all of the physics you gotta learn, such as the compressability effect, supersonic and transonic calculations. I'd imagine to pass those you oughtta be really good at maths. Some people say u have to learn calculus before passing theory in training.
I'm a train manager and we also have to know a lot of math to calculate the weight of the train, the power of the breaks and how much breakpower the train needs to end up in the correct position on the platform.
I can only imagine how much pilots need to know math!

Im a conductor and engineer (US, freight) I was terrified about getting on the railroad and being horrible at math. Turns out all we do is add our train length, train length with 3% for its stretched length and adding our tonnage. Thats it, all basic addition and subtraction if we set out cars/engines. Haha

Respect! As someone who just realized I want to become a pilot last Monday, the math and physics is the most terrifying part about this whole process (besides the money). This won’t stop me. Because knowing math will at least an assurance that you will understand the physical concepts of flight from point of view of the engineer who designed the aircraft

You don't need maths and physics to be an airline pilot. You just need the basics of maths and physics, you will only go through it in your CPL and ATPL really. Other than that no stress I've been to a flight school and I don't have maths or physics yet I "CAN" be an airline pilot, you do not neccesasily need those subjects they make your training easy let's just say that. Everything is taught and you will be shown everything
Yes you don't need university degree of math&physics but some people struggle even with basic physic laws so it is important to make clear that you must not underestimate it

Waldotto yuh flight schools don't give a shjt about your marks I rather suggest u watch mentour pilot he speaks the truth from every angle and I've been to a flight school myself, if u have the money to pay and u really determined to be a pilot nothing is stopping you, flight schools won't care about your grades except the really well known ones

I did some digging to find the exact descriptions and in my country there's one university program that offers to teach the required theoretical knowledge up until the ATPL exam. This is the exact description for the subject in question:
[Math 1.]
"Combinatorial concepts. Permutation, combination, variation. The concept of a complex number. Algebraic and trigonometric form. Complex numbers (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square root) operations. Vectoralgebra. Operations with vectors. Scalar and mixed multiplication of vectors. Matrix salculation. Matrix addition, subtraction, multiplication. Base transformation variant I. and II. Linear programming. Standard and modified normal LP problem. Real number sequences. Monotony and boundedness of sequences. Limits of sequences.
Theorems for sequences. Operations with sequences. Series. Convergence of series. Convergence criterias. Absolute and conditional convergence. Operations with series. Geometric series.
[Math 2]
"Properties of a function, limits. Differential calculus, difference quotient, elementary rules of differentiation. Taylor formulas, Maclaurin formulas. Studying the graph of a function. Integral calculus, concept of primitive function, Techniques for indefinite integrals, integration of rational functions. Definite integral of real-valued functions. Newton-Leibniz formula. Limits. Applications of integral calculus, area, volume and rectification calculation. Centroid. Differential equations:homogeneous and inhomogeneous first-order linear equations. Second-order differential equations. Probability theory: properties of probability measure. Conditional probability, law of total probability, Bayes's theorem. Random variables, discrete random variables, absolutely continuous random variables, probability distribution function, probability density function, the description of probability density function, expected value and its properties, variance and its properties, independence, covariance, Well-known discrete distribution and continuous distributions: Laws of large numbers. The bases of mathematical statistics: random sample, sample mean, sample median, sample variance, unit area histogram (for density estimate). Statistical tests."
The physics part is what to be expected, electronics, engineering level mechanics, optics, wave theory, thermodynamics, and physical chemistry. This may vary based on where you do your courses, but I expect it to be more or less in line with the aformentioned requirments.
As is typical in such courses, they were designed by Mathematicians. They course bears no relation to the real world requirements but does boost the ego of Mathematics specialists. I would judge the requirements as being: Arithmetic to excellent mental and paper levels. Euclidian Geometry. Vector Arithmetic and Geometry. Basic Probability and Statistics.
All the rest in those course lists is important for a Mathematician, Professional Engineer or Theoretical Physicist going forward with their career but will never be used by the Pilot Students of these courses after they have sat the examinations.
Before anyone gets up in arms that I don't know what I'm talking about, I'm a retired Graduate Physicist, Chemist, Electronic Engineer and Computer Systems Engineer. Been there, done that, got multiple tee-shirts! Oh, I forgot to add Video Producer - LOL.
this is bullshit. the only theoretical knowledge you need prior to ATPL is if you're running full speed towards a brick wall you'll hit your head and die. Everything else will be taught to you in common sense

Planes are all about physics. One interesting case study is what happened with Kara Hultgreen's F-14 Tomcat. The F-14 Tomcat is a beast to tame, a very dangerous airplane that is given only to the best pilots for a reason.
Kara was flying F-14A variant which had a crappy engine. The F-14 has 2 engines and she was approaching the carrier. She was turning left and she overshoot the ILS centerline, so she tried to yaw and she had excess yaw, which caused a compressor stall, so she had asymetric thrust which adds rotation around vertical axis. What did she do? She engaged afterburner, making the rotation even worse.
Instead of using rudder to compensate rotation, she used the control column making things worse, AoA went too high, her left wing stalled and right wing lift rotated the plane. Copilot (RIO) pulled the ejection seat, and 0.4 seconds her seat ejected pointing below horizont and she did not make it.
The compressor stall happened literally at the worst possible moment.
The recommended steps to avoid her situation were:
Set a 10 deg pitch atitude on waterline without increasing AoA above 14 units
Rudder - opposite roll/yaw supplemented with lateral stick
Both throttles as required for positive rate of climb
Landing gear up (to reduce drag)
Even knowing what needs to be done, actually doing that in the simulator is tricky. If there is a compressor stall of an engine during final approach, with cross winds (to make it harder), it would worth practicing that in the simulator. It seems a bad situation and quite a challenge to solve.
It seems that keeping AoA under control in the first instant is key. Immediately after, rudder, the throttle for climb and instants later landing gear. Is it the same in your plane? Your plane should not be like that F-14A beast and you will not be landing on a carrier, and yet it seems an interesting scenario to practice as an intellectual exercise of physics in the sim. To me it looks like the most difficult and delicate scenario, aside of losing hydraulics and landing with engines only.
If you fly at h=33,000 ft and you want to descent to destination at a slope angle a=3° , you must do: tg(a) = h/d. Then you must start your descent at a distance from destination d=h/tg(a). h=about 10 Km. Then d = about 190 Km = about 102 nm. So you must start your descent about 102 nm before destination. And your vertical speed will be vs= v*tg(a). So if your ground speed is v=250 kt, then vs= about 13 kt = about 1,300 ft/min. Of course, the faster your ground speed is, the faster your vertical speed is (if the slope angle stay constant). When I played my favourite videogame (fs), I didn't do any calculation and diveded height into 3 to determine the start of descent at a vertical speed of 2000 ft. For example, if h=36,000 ft, then start of descent d=120 nm. And it worked greatly. Of course, "it worked greatly" ON A VIDEOGAME (I underline: "VIDEOGAME"). :-)
It's not just about the algorithmic side of things it's also about the ability to control a plane

Download this excel chart, it's a program provided by a hungarian university so it may be a bit different elsewhere but I assume the vast majority of the requirements are the same. Based on the chart, there really isn't any super complicated maths, it's basic engineering level.

I agree with eUK95, this video, although informative seems to put people off being pilots, because it makes it seem much harder, more selective and unreachable than it really is. After doing a lot of research, specifically about the requirements of my country’s airlines (Australia) it is not as important to ace maths and physics as it is made out in this video. For kids, math may be boring unless you love it. I have found parents in US use a tabletop game called "Battletech a game of armored combat" to keep their kids sharp in math for STEM careers. It is like some sort of chess with math. In that game kids must measure distances, converti situations into numbers, sum, convert numbers into locations and sometimes even using formulas. Rules in text format may seem intimidating for newcomers, so "Battletech fan" channel made a visual guide Lego instructions style, to make learning of kids easier. A parent in a group said a few days ago:"Its a very good learning tool. I played with my 8 year old and it forces him to think and use math, while having fun and strategizing."
So if you cannot find a way to love math, playing that game will make you like it. The game deals with internal hardware failures and requires attention to detail. You may find it very interesting.
Mi piace Milano molto. Ho visitato Milano due volte. In fact I was so impressed by Italy that, I too, was inspired to learn Italian. I just returned from Europe and Amsterdam was my point of entry. I studied Nederlance prior to going but I had never been exposed to it and there’s just no way to get a feel for a language until you’re attempting to speak to a native speaker while looking the person in the face and listening to the real living language. Thank god my flight lessons are generally easier and more fun than language (not by much because deep down, people are a little scary with makes it an adventure).

Personally I have always wanted to be a pilot in major cargo airlines like DHL or Fedex. These large companies are very fond of profiles with university degrees especially in the scientific fields. When they saw that I had a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering + 3000 flying hours in glider they immediately contacted me to tell me that they were interested in my profile. I passed the selections where I did everything excellently and a few months later I became an airline pilot officer at DHL on B757. So if I have any advice for you to focus on your studies and try to get the best possible degrees in the best possible schools and you will get there: D!

What are you trying to do ? Scare people off about becoming pilots lol. We use maths everyday we just have to apply it to aviation. If the person sets their mind into it and they are willing nothing can stop them. Instead of saying all that you should be encouraging people.

With all due respect you do NOT have to know the topics she's saying to be a pilot. I'm a pilot for a well known legacy US airline and never have I needed to know complicated math. Just multiply and divide by 3, reciprocals, divide and multiply by 20 (3 deg glide), and 4th grade multiplication/division. The biggest math is making sure your pay has been calculated correctly, esp if you've picked up a premium pay trip

Looking at the comments on your videos, ma’am, 90% of them show little or no regard for the English language. Regardless of ability in maths, physics, chemistry etc a fundamental requirement of an aspiring pilot is attention to accuracy. Posting “breaks” instead of “brakes”, or ”loose” instead of “lose” shows disregard for that.
We all make typos, but checking and crosschecking are critical in aviation so if you even think of flying as a career start by paying attention to writing correctly, otherwise you will fail before you begin.
I was unsure about the contraction of “madam” - so I took literally five seconds to look it up: it’s not rocket science, just getting it right and you need to do that when you have 400 people behind your ass.
I disagree with her however if math isn't your strong point. Get knowledgeable on airline math before training, problem solved. Give yourself a weeks time to learn all there is with flight math.

Once you can add subtract multiply divide and can read graphs you’re golden for the math part. For the physics part there a few laws of physics you will encounter but these are memory items(things you should just remember), like how planes life. This video it’s very misleading tbh. And if you want check out mentour pilot someone who knows what they are saying and been in the airline for yearssss

Literally I have got compartment in maths in 7th class and scored 96% in English...
But in my country India.. You need to take PCM in 11th and 12th for getting a CPL from India

Yes you need a basic understanding of math and a basic understanding of physics.. But we are HONESTLY talking about adding subtracting and multiplying or dividing WHICH THE MANUAL E6B INCORPORATES AS DESIGNED for Ratios... A basic understanding of physics equates to “if you stand on a piece of plywood and weigh 100lbs or 200lbs??? Will it break?? Pilots don’t need all of the extreme math people think they do. They need to have a basic understanding of the math but MORE IMPORTANTLY IS AN UNDERSTANDING of all systems on board. Even “SULLY” Said he had no time to write out equations while landing in the Hudson. But somehow he did it while prioritizing certain information and putting off other information. Basic math is crucial, in an emergency low to the ground.....there is no time for Advanced math.
If 50 plus numbers do not appear in Math then how will you apply in the pilot.
Michelle, many of your viewers may not understand what you mean by "Math A" and "Math B." Do you mean that one needs to understand algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus?

I literally just planned my whole life right now, and im sure i can become a pilot, and i still can learn everything because im 14 😁 im going to focus hard and learn so hard and i will stress the hell out my mind and i will become healthy i just want to be a pilot and live in italy

Short answer if you need basic math to calculate weight and other things and physics not really use that much I’ve been told

You get your licences and ratings, then apply for an airline, then actually get a job, then spend years as a FO in order to become a captain. There is no shortcut.

I don't care about physics theories and trigonometry. Most can understand those given enough effort. What I fear is stuff like calculus. Do u need to know calculus to do ATPL maths/physics?
