Dear friends and followers, in today´s video we´ll be talking about "If pilots can wear glasses" ?
The answer is yes - you can wear glasses and be an airline pilot - you don’t need to have perfect vision. However you are required to have a certain standard of vision as outlined below.
The standards vary from country to country so If in any doubt, you should contact an Authorised Medical Examiner (AME) in the country that you anticipate completing your flight training in.
‘An applicant may be assessed as fit with hypermetropia not exceeding +5.0 dioptres, myopia not exceeding -6.0 dioptres, astigmatism not exceeding 2.0 dioptres, and anisometropia not exceeding 2.0 dioptres, provided that optimal correction has been considered and no significant pathology is demonstrated. Monocular visual acuities should be 6/6 or better.’
Distant visual acuity, with or without correction, shall be 6/9 or better monocularly, and 6/6 or better binocularly.
You will require a comprehensive ophthalmological examination on your initial assessment then every 5 years up to your 40th Birthday and then every 2 years.
Plus:
Pilots are required to carry a spare pair of spectacles
Pilots are not allowed to wear polarised glasses (there is a video out about that topic in my channel)
Bifocal contact lenses are not approved
PLEASE BE ADVISED I AM NOT A DOCTOR AND THEREFORE CAN NOT ANSWER YOUR QUESTION REGARDING IF YOU CAN BECOME A PILOT IF YOU HAVE ISSUES WITH YOUR EYES. ASK A PROFESSIONAL AERONAUTICAL MEDICAL DOCTOR!!!
Thanks for watching, all the best your "Captain" Joe

Please go and check yourself with an aeronautical medic before giving up your dreams. I didn't pass at first but after eye surgery i did meet the requirements and now I'm flying. Do everything you can.
Yeah I would encourage everyoen to do that. I was actually surprised that I pased easily (military pilots had some very strict rules and I thought they applied to commercial pilots for a while). Anyway I know that some pilots paid a lot for their training only to realize that for solo flight they needed the medical and they did not pass it.
Besides it is always good to know about your health, that way you can do something about it.
I did the aeronautical medic test some months ago to see if I could become a pilot and I passed it, but they told me that I was on the edge limit regarding my vision, having 2.75 / 3 diopter. However, I feel like my vision is getting worse progressively so I'm afraid the next time I run the tests I don't pass it. I'm going to have eye surgery if I pass this limit but I'm afraid also that once I do that, my vision gets worse and there's nothing I can do after eye surgery...
I really hope I don't reach that limit or else I don't know what I'll do
I was fine within the limits of a class 1 medical but outside of the limits of airlines which finance the training. So I just ended up flying in private and maybe not being so sad over the fact that I spare my daily X-ray. :)
My both eye power is -0.75 can I become a pilot??
Sir,You talked about eye surgery....Can a guy be a pilot by surging his/her eyes
Kinda sad if a medical issue would stop anyone from fulfilling their dreams. Great and informative video again. Thanks!
Cargospotter yup mine glasses are -3.50 & -3.00 plz can I become pilot?
from the video, sounds like you can be a pilot.
Cargospotter, not really. at least in the sense that this job would put others in danger. i really want my pilot to be able to see and perform the duties required to safely operate an airliner to transport me to my destination.
GhostHostMemories thank you for your answers.
GhostHostMemories i understand your point, but it is still sad if you can't fullfil your dreams because of something out of your control, talking about self experience, everyone in my family has bad eyesight, so i had eye surgery in order to pass the class 1 medical. There's a risk of becoming blind in this surgery too.
''I hade a lot of carrots when I was a child'' eating a carrot right now
The "carrots are good for vision" story actually started as British propaganda during WWII to "explain" how they could see incoming German aircraft so well (in fact, they had developed radar that could see the aircraft)
Carrots have lots of great stuff in them but do not make your vision any better than any other vegetable would - its just a common myth I'm afraid Buggs.
Antoni Modlinski eating carrots actually helps your eye on dark/night. At least that's what I know. It does not have any help on the general vision. Also getting for example myopia is most of the times pure genetics. Just like my self, I had 20/10 vision when I was a kid until 16-17, since 18 I started using glasses because it increased rapidly and got me by surprise at that age, just at the same time I started college. My dad uses so.. I got it. I'm 22 now.
Hahahaha sameee
Lmao me too
I feel like due to the rising amount of people wearing glasses, and the limited amount of pilots, rules may have to slightly change in the years and years to come.
People constantly sit around behind their screens for hours and hours, that's the reason why so many people have glasses
@@mirellehaavassalu9293 90 percent of people that wear glasses have eye problems that they were born with.
Elle H, you have no idea what you’re talking about.
Elle H. Thats what most elders tell their grandkids lol
actually it's true. Research out of Germany is showing that exposure to LED lights is causing eye damage. People who don't go outside enough are effected. Plus the world is getting LED light bulbs now.

When I started 18 years ago it was -3 for a Class one. Now you can almost be blind, as long as you have a normal sight when wearing lenses :-) Btw. very nice explanation Cpt. Joe. Nice to have you back.
Steen Pedersen true. In Germany I can fly if I have normal sight with glassed. without glasses I wouldn't have be able to pass the test. I did my license 5 years ago.
Please i didn't understand very well Can someone tell me if i fit the requirements i have myopia my left eye Is -3.5/10 and my right Eye Is -3/10 thanks in Advance.
I am so relieved after watching this and reading this comment ahaha
Commercial pilots can, military pilots can't. That's what an Emirates pilot told me. By the way that Emirates pilot was wearing glasses!!
Rifat Nawaz seems a bit backwards doesn't it a commercial airline with poor eyesight is probably worse than a military pilot with poor eyesight... difference well if you manage to crash well guess what that's 300 plus people vs 1 or 2 varying the plane
mostly 300+ vs 0... most military jets have ejection seats
Sunshine Cruises good point
It's sad but that is how it is in the military. They are always looking for the best among us.
Rifat Nawaz Military pilots can* i am sure ! In France, many pilots had a eyes surgery and now they are pilot !
Yes, we can! I’m private pilot, and I’m wearing glasses. I have valid medical class 1 :)
I have -1.50 .Can I become a pilot?
Yes, i have -2.00 and passed a class 1 no problems.
ThisCrazyGaMerKid
Hey I have -1.00 in my left and -2.25 in my right can I be a pilot
I have -3.75 in my right eye and -2.75 in my left eye can you please tell me if i can be a pilot ?
I have -3.75 in left and -3.25 in right and I'm 16😭
Yes! At last I can still pursue my dreams to be a pilot with wearing glasses 😁
I got my medical before I started flight training: I was badly overweight and wanted to make sure I could proceed. With advancing age (sigh...) I've opted for progressive lenses to make it easier to read charts in the cockpit. Prescription sunglasses were worth every penny.
I lost 165 pounds/75 kilos between that initial medical and my PPL flight test... :-)
Please i didn't understand very well Can someone tell me if i fit the requirements i have myopia my left eye Is -3.5/10 and my right Eye Is -3/10 thanks in Advance.
"By the way I dont use glases, this ones are see through" hahahahah
Joe you crak me up!!
Thanks for this info! I'm wearing glasses and I'm striving to be a pilot!
I'm color blind..so disappointed
don't be, depending on where you are or where you want tpo work.. you might be able to get CPL and may even fly as a cargo or airline pilot!
Spock * hello, I’m also colour blind, can you give me some advice? Thanks
Thanks!!you made my day
Jason hi Jason, what country are you from?
In Canada you can do day-only IFR CPL. That's great for helicopter and small planes. Unfortunately ATPL requires night flying and night flying requires colour vision for the systems in place.
Literally talking with my mother about this two days ago!
I hope I was of some help!
EaqIe, not figuratively. I have a brother-in-law That is a pilot in the States. I was talking about "this new RUclips creator" that's a pilot and he makes videos. Which lead to me wishing I'd have started the journey years ago. But we both figured since health plays a Major part, bad vision would be a disqualifier for pilots. The next day, this video came out.
Sorry for the long story of me saying, nope, not figuratively. Literally. Lol
Oh yeah, Captain Joe, the video was very helpful and answered a lot more questions than just if pilots can have corrective lenses.
Bradley Patrick shut up
Ishaq Ali no u he didn’t do anything
Years ago when I was growing up I wanted to be a pilot. I spoke about it for years but my father kept telling me that since I wore glasses I couldn't be a pilot. He kept insisting that I could never be an airline pilot and I didn't know any better at the time so I never became a pilot...:(
Unfortunately, that's what stopped me to be a pilot ...:-(
oh why? :(
Class II certification can be had right? even with spectacles.
i don't know your country of residence or operation though.
I'm in my mid-50s. The requirements for pilots back in the 1980s (which was the time I was making career decisions), were more stringent. Besides requiring 20/20 vision (no laser eye surgery back then), airlines preferred military pilots.
*+Randy Yamada* oh :( tsch feels bad to hear that.
yes, the guidelines and rules were much different then. now it is more like keeping the lobbyists and industry happy while still doing some basic ground work.
by the way, i'm about 15-16 years younger to you and some medical condition (motor function/ nervous system handicap) kept me from taking up certain professions i could have. I can feel that pinch.
so you from NorthAmerica?
Hope life is peaceful now, with whatever turns it took :) ?
Same
RidzFly yeah but i am over the limit :(
According to the FAA, there are no limits, as long as your vision is corrected to 20/20 with glasses, you can be a pilot
This has changed. In the early 90s, there was no shortage of pilot applicants (and much fewer pilots needed) and there was no way that you got in with glasses - you needed 20/20 vision without correction. Once you were a pilot, this changed of course. I certainly could not have become a pilot, even though I am at less than 3 diopters (and rock solid stable since childhood).
Hi Joe, just to add to your knowledge on the color vision. I am a PPL pilot aspiring to fly commercially. I failed the ishihara but passed an anomaloscopy test (bare in mind each country in EASA can have various anomaloscopy tests for example Oculus). While in Slovakia I was told I am colorblind and can forget about flying other doctors went a step further to evaluate night bans, multi-crew only and still will give you a 1st class medical! Just a hint to anyone with problems in color vision, stick with it and do not give up.
don't worry, my astigmatism and my anisometropia are both greater than 2 and I still got my medical 1st class. In a lot of cases you can still get a positive outcome
LufthansaA343 howww
First let me say that I live in Germany and know the rules about the German medical. I don't know how it works in other countries, but I am sure its quiet similar...Usually when you get your medical and everything is in the norm you will get your medical right away. In my case(and a lot of other cases) if you are outside of this norm the doctor will send your results to a higher aviation authority (in Germany the LBA) and they will check and decide whether you can still receive your medical with certain additional legal requirements that you have to obey. In my case I of course have to wear glasses (or contacts) and always have a spear with me like Joe said. And the other part is a so called SIC. That is a special requirement that I have to get my eyes checked every other year apart from the actual medical renewal in order to make sure, that my eyes are not getting worse because of an illness. So even if you aren't in the norm you can still get the medical, but of course not guaranteed!
Hello and for the myopia?
20/10 VISION DAMN!!!! i am allergic to carrots >:(
I feel like my eyesight is getting worse and it might interfere with my dreams
Omg same...the more I wear my glasses, the more blur my vision gets
Yeah glasses make everything worse. Learn to use your eyes properly. Get rid of strained muscles around your head and neck. Get your nervous system relaxed and your thoughts also too.
The fasten seatbelt signs are turned on as we are experiencing some turbulence.!
"The planes on the walls"
Bad joke
Hey Captain Joe! Thanks for the shine of hope. They said I can't become a pilot because of my shortsightedness but this video gave me something to keep dreaming for. I love your videos, stay cool.
Very informative, I have myopia and wear eyeglasses. I love aviation and was concerned about the vision. Thanks a lot for the video, Joe!
How is your journey 4 years later?
omg this is so helpful cuz i want to be a pilot and i need to wear eye glass
me too
Wow those diopter limits are actually rather lenient. I mean, I think it's fine, as long as the problem is correctable with glasses, there is no problem. Anyways, I find it funny that the limits for passing a train driver medical in my country are way stricter than FAA limits for getting a pilot medical. There used to be a complete ban on glasses for train drivers which was lifted only about 10 years ago and now the limits are +/- 2 diopters.
*+Jan H* which nation please?
also could you point us to some resources (links) or forum/s where these details could be looked up or discussed by enthusiasts?
Thanks.
Not as many people on the track when you're flying a plane.
+Spock * Czech republic, decree 101/1995 attachment 1, not that I think it's of any interest unless you can speak Czech are a train geek 😊 What a surprise there are not enough train drivers here.
+Gun Nut That's so interesting! Any reasoning behind this? I mean, if a pilot or a police officer had no teeth at all and use a denture instead, why does it matter at all...
Zdař spoluobčane!
Another great video!! Thanks Captain Joe!! All of your videos are very informative and enjoyable to watch!!! 👍
Thank you Professor Captain Joe! :-)
Haha, might have to stick to that style ;)

The FAA do not have diopter limits, what is mentioned in this video is for the EASA, even though he mentions it is about the FAA.
It is -8 limit in FAA

Good that you mention again people need to consult with a physician for personal advice.
When I got glasses I cried for days because I couldn't become a pilot. I got into a different field but I am determined to become a hobby pilot when I save up enough in a few years. I am not dying before I become a pilot!❤️

Love your channel joe. Keep up the good work❤️
Watching this reminded me of the incredible feat of flying performed by the pilot of Flight TACA110, whose plane flamed out due to hail over the Gulf of Mexico and who landed on a levee in Louisiana. He only had sight in one eye due to being shot at as a young man. (It was featured in a Season 11 episode of Mayday/Air Crash Investigation, Nowhere to Land. It used to be available to watch on RUclips and if it's not there, it's probably up on Dailymotion. Really amazing story.)
I'm slightly color blind. It's difficult for me to see the difference between red/brown, blue/purple, green/yellow, depending on guess. Do an episode on color blindness!
I really appreciate you captain! I have learnt a lot from your channel, and maybe this is also a reason why I aim my career path to the aviation industry. Thank you so much! And hope one day I may fly high to the sky, just like you! :)
Hey Captain Joe! I love your videos and this one caught my eye! I have Myopia, and I really wanted to find out whether I could fly as I am barely into my teenage years yet have vast ambitions for an aviation career. I really hope I can still fulfill my aviation ambitions and fly into the sky!

Okay, for all the people out there with poor vision and follow the rules of the FAA: there isn't any range of correction that you need to be within for your medicals. For example, if you're going for a first class medical, the requirements for Near Vision are : "20/20 or better in each eye separately, with or without correction.". So as long as you wear glasses that correct effectively, you should be good.
Awesome video Joe, this will solve that myth out there
Hey captain Joe could you please share your story how you become an airline pilot please!!!
Once upon a time.. Long Long Ago..
rest he'll tell.. (he already has some information on his site and i think someone once also did a mini interview of him for some blog, but cannot recollect)
Yes I'm planning on doing so!
Thank you captain joe I've learned a lot about airplanes because of you
Please soon and also about my glasses I have - 1.50 . Can I become a pilot?
During the early days glasses (in the form of aviation goggles) were a requirement as shielded cockpits were not a thing yet.
on a side-note: I've heard of one pilot that had acquired some so-called jeweler's glasses after he had missed a minor crack (that he couldn't have been expected to notice) during preflight that led to his number 4 breaking off mid-flight
When I first heard about that I was really relieved, so thanks for spreading the word :D Also you really rock these glasses Joe, greetings from Germany
i have a -8.50 myopia in my eyes and i am a huge aviation enthusiast:/ i am considering being a pilot but i cannot see even a foot length without strong glasses
Sucks that this limits my vision and career choices
Not in Europe (see below). It should be the same with the FAA standards. As long as you have an otherwise healthy eye that should not be a problem.
Initial applicants who do not meet the requirements in (1)(ii), (iii) and (iv) above should be referred to the licensing authority. A fit assessment may be considered following review by an ophthalmologist.
(3) At revalidation an applicant may be assessed as fit with:
(i) hypermetropia not exceeding +5.0 dioptres;
(ii) myopia exceeding -6.0 dioptres;
(iii) astigmatism exceeding 2.0 dioptres;
(iv) anisometropia exceeding 2.0 dioptres
provided that optimal correction has been considered and no significant pathology is demonstrated.
Ask a local Aviation Medical Examiner. His the expert - he can give you a definitive answer and/or treatment suggestion.
Dhanya Narayan I'm 17 with myopia of -8.0 diopters, I get you. I'm going to talk to my optician to see if there is any possibility.
Ryan Barker :( i hope we both can get eye surgery or anything to correct our vision without glasses/contacts because it's literally the only thing limiting our career possibilities and knowing that we both have severe myopia and can't possibly be pilots breaks my heart
Dhanya Narayan so guys can you become pilot with class 1 medical because I also have -7 right eye and -2 left eye
On the FAA wesbsite they state for first class medical your vision should be 20/20 with or without correction and they dont state anything regarding myopia -6.0
Had LASIK surgery 18 yrs ago. Never regretted it.
Similar in railways (UK at least). Obviously check with a doctor too. But I'm a safety critical railwayman and I wear glasses.
Regulations in the UK call for vision of 6/9 (good eye) and 6/12 (bad eye) minimum (6/6 being the equivalent of 20/20). That, however, can be your corrected vision so long as your uncorrected vision is no worse than 6/60.
I'm corrected to better than 6/6 (20/20) with glasses and my right is better than 6/9 with my left eye being only a little worse than 6/12.
Colour vision and near vision are also tested (I'm mildly myopic so my near sight is excellent and my colour sight has never been an issue).
We also go through hearing tests, blood pressure and heart rate tests and drug and alcohol screening aswell. Additionally we have a medical history taken and we get any long term or regular medications we take noted and then those have to be checked to see if they are safe. (If, at anytime during our careers we have to be put on a medication we have to declare it to ensure we can still safely work - if not we are put 'OTR' and cannot work in a safety critical capacity).
Similar to airlines, the younger you are the less frequent your medicals but they do get more and more frequent.
The inventor of the contact lens had over 9 diopter.
-6 right eye and -7 left eye, that's my dreams of getting in the aviation industry down the sink...

Captain Joe Nice ;)
Was hoping you would mention this - for laser eye surgery, PRK is permitted, LASIK is not.
Great channel Captain! I really enjoy all your videos, they help explain a lot of things I encounter during flight training. Just a follow up on the prescription, I contacted an Aviation Medical Examiner here in the states, and there is no limitation on prescription strength (diopters) for distant vision, the FAA requires you to have 20/20 for a first class medical at whichever prescription strength you may have. The restrictions on diopters kick in when one has misaligned eyes. I hope this helps clear the issue up. Looking forward to your future videos.
i eat a lots of carrots when i was yong:D loool
So your eyes are healthy and you have 20/20 vision? I'm curious.

Not sure if you mentioned it but for first class medical you need to be 20/20 in each eye (not just one or the other or both together). Intermediate distance must be the same as near but if achievable at near then lenses would allow for intermediate if needed. I'm an Optometrist in the US and I think you did a good job breaking down the meaning of the chart, color anomalies, and other basics that people ask me about all the time.
You can be rapper after your aviation career. Those hands/arms are flying everywhere hahah😜.
Thanks for the info👍🏼.

I am sorry that I had to cut your video short. I am a little drunk. Yet I have finished my walk around, and I'm back in the cocktails, oops cockpit. Sorry (hic)! Oh wait looks like I have my polarized sunglasses on! Oh wait here is the ATC! Cleared for take off....
don't drink and -drive- fly!
NOT funny!
Wheeeeeeeee look at the mountain...
*crashingtubelights* _Wheeeeeeeee look at the mountain..._
you a nutcase crashingtubelights?
Spock * this is awesome....land, sky, land, skyyyyyyyy
in my day you couldnt wear glasses .. but the funny thing is ,, you could get a waiver for being blind in one eye.. thats how i did it... ahahahaha
I have 3 diopters and I asked my medical doctor about having an eye surgery and he told me not to do it because it maybe cause a night vision problem relating with the ''halos'' and also what Joe said about the airlines. Now I'm with my glasses during lessons and contact lenses mixed with sun glasses for my flights
Yeah if you can correct your eyesight with glasses do not get eye surgery, it is unnecessary risk. If you cannot correct yur eyesight with glasses I would say it is up to everyone to weight the risks.
Joe, very nice video as usual. I have a substandard vision at my right eye, only few percent but this disqualify me from medical class II nor I. But now by EASA it is possible to get LAPL licence medical class for GA aviation planes, SEP and less than 2000kg TOW and max 4 persons on board. There are some other limitations but this allow me to fill my dream to become a pilot. Of course not airliner but flying is passion and size is not important :). Hope this information can help some dreamers to fill they dreams, as I do.

Joe you are awesome, you help to clear my doubt to a great extent
I’ve always asked this question I spend so much screen time a day but I want to be a pilot when I grow up
helped a lot sir , I wanted to know it for 2 years but no one can properly tell me and now I can be an aviator
I’m colour blind, but that doesn’t stop you from becoming a pilot. Further testing is carried out to see if you are “colour vision safe”, which means that if you are not severely colour blind you may pass your Class 1 Medical. In the U.K. you are sent to be tested on a CAD machine which costs about £120 and if you pass you pass the colour vision section of the class 1 medical.
Finnish Airforce pilots can have glasses, 0.5 without glasses and with glasses 1.0. Interesting thing is that you are disqualified if your eyesight have been corrected surgically.
Finnair requires 1.0 with or without glasses and allows surgical correction.
What would be if you have just a slight colorblindnes?
I was having pilot dreams after my first time ever in an airplane (15 minutes in a Cessna to see a city from above) but that was put on ice when I heard about the vision requirements and I started to wear glasses... I heard something about it not being ok to need glasses or contact lenses when starting training or something like that. So yeah, that put me down a fair bit... I have myopia and astigmatism, nothing extreme but without glasses or contact lenses I can’t even see the floor if I stand up, or see text on my computer screen or phone if it’s more than about a foot away or so. With glasses or lenses I have pretty good vision, although I see better on my right eye than my left as we can’t manage to fully correct my left eye. But oh well, now I’m a disabled almost 34 year old anyways... But it’s still on my bucket list to get to pilot an airplane one day, even if just for a minute or two with an experienced pilot with me. Extra bonus if it’s a fighter jet as I just love the sound of them, and love speed! There really isn’t much that is better than being at an air show and a fighter jet does a fly by on low altitude and lights those afterburners so you feel the sound all through your body. Went to my first air show at age 10 and loved every minute of it! Then add The Red Arrows performing there, and you have a very happy 10 year old! I had a huge poster of them on my wall for years after that show!
I am not a pilot, but I was told at 15 that I should have been wearing glasses for slight shortsightedness in the left eye. Just after a few hours I became totally dependent (it was bad not wearing glasses), so I ditched them, and now, at 52, I don't need any. I even went flying GA aircraft with a pilot, flew the aircraft for a few hours a few times myself, with the pilot checking, and I never had any problems spotting anything. A few years ago, they realised I also have slight double vision: they can see this after being asked to close 1 or 2 eyes then re-opening them: the eyes cross slightly. The glasses for double vision made me feel I was drunk (although I have never been drunk myself), but it was horrible wearing these glasses. I know about my slight double vision from age 7, but as long as I make the eyes focus, then I see one and only one picture; no problems. 5 years ago, my right eye started to be not so good to read, so they advised me reading glasses, but again it felt awkward with the glasses. I ditched them, and now I can read well with both eyes: I can see a good picture, because the brain ignores the bad picture from my right eye, and keeps the good picture from the left eye, WITHOUT losing 3D vision. The BRAIN IS A WONDERFUL THING ! And when I go flying, I can see things, not because I have good eyes, but because I PAY ATTENTION. Each time I go flying, I think "when it's my turn to fly the aircraft, I better PAY ATTENTION, because things can always go wrong very quickly". With that in mind, in my last few flights, I was actually the first to spot the little balloons around 200 feet below the aircraft, and other aircraft coming from the side. PAYING ATTENTION is what saves lives, OVERCONFIDENCE/CARELESSNESS is what causes accidents.
Captain Joe back with an interesting topic!!
After this video, I would recommend to also watch a Video from Mentour Pilot.
This video is well scripted and explains very well what the requirements are technically. Mentour having glasses him self has off-course a more practical point of view on the topic.
That's good to hear!!! I have one perfect eye and one lazy eye that is corrected with glasses
yeah this is the information i need before i start flying again...
Man my dream when i grow up i want to be a pilot but my teacher said people with glasses cant fly planes and i almost gave up but this helped me out a bit
Very informative. I have a question on jet engine exhaust smoke. Many today don't emit hardly any but does the amount of what little smoke is seen, speak to the efficiency of the engine? I've seen V2500-powered A320s emit more smoke than a CFM-powered A320.
thank you you never know if your eyesight could cange any second many people think that is it I cat be a pilot but you have shown you can be a pilot
