Restoring the original Xbox. In this video, I will restore this old Xbox. The console is very dusty and auto shut down after a couple of minutes because of CPU overheating.
I have cleaned the heat sink and fan also on the board there was also a heat sink to cool the CPU and GPU. Between the heat sink and the board, there is always a thermal paste or thermal pad that is used to transfer heat. If there are air gaps the heat won't transfer efficiently enough. Also if the thermal paste dries, that can cause overheating so I replaced the paste. It's important to clean the old paste. A small drop of paste in the middle of the CPU is the best way to apply it.
To keep the stickers at the bottom I used isopropyl alcohol to soften the glue.
The disassembly was pretty straightforward. A few screws here and there and a ton of cables to wiggle free.

Microsoft needs to launch a anniversary edition this year from 20 years of the console

without hacking it, you can't change the old HDDs.
And these old HDDs are dying.
The worst issue on this console (except for the last ones produced) is the time clock capacitor :
they leak acid on the motherboard and destroy it.
This is my all time fav console :) I will never forget playing Halo CE and Halo 2 as a child on the OG xbox. It is also the coolest looking xbox ever made :D

I love how this guy repairs stuff to the point where they look like new bought consoles and then just like in everyday life makes a break and simply plays on those consoles.

I bought another one recently from a pawn shop for $50. Pulled the capacitor of death out of it, reassembled that bad boi and it bonks like it were new.
Saw it at a thrift shop for $20. Yes I removed the capacitor. The later model didn’t need removal

Helps showing that the console truly has over heating issues and not just saying you’ve fixed it.
You're lucky you didn't destroy the gpu, tearing the heatsink off like that when it was cool. You need to use a heat gun or let the xbox idle for about 10 minutes before attempting to remove them. I've seen plenty of people rip the top half of the die doing exactly what you did.
GooGone would've made your life easier when removing the old paste. It wipes right off after letting it sit for a few minutes. I also like to use a Magic Eraser on the exterior plastics, except for the led bezel. It gives it an almost brand new finish if you don't scrub too hard.
Good video though. I just don't want others thinking you can rip the heatsinks off while it's cool, and expect to have the luck you did.

Wd-40 will rip through that old thermal paste with little to no effort, Then you can go back over it with 99% ipa. Works great, I had to work to hard with 99% alone.

Don't use WD-40 over low voltage working components or you will fried them, better use isopropyl alcohol

Its dumb to call these retro or vintage. Sounds like an 80 year old man. These consoles are from 6th generation of videogames, we are in 9th generation right now with ps5 and xbox series x/s.
So this console technologically is still young considering it can do 1080i natively.

The Xbox was revolutionary in gaming. Just a Microsoft PC built for gaming, movies and music. Pure entertainment. Had one need another.
I have 10+ of these consoles. Can NOT live without them.

Not that there was a way for em to get dirty, but it's kinda cool that the really long bolts were still pristine. Most products that old screws and stuff are corroded and rusted from time passed. Those were just as shiny as the day they were put in

I'm curious, how do you manage to avoid ever frying the electronics you work with? Is it true that circuit boards are actually not as fragile as we think? There is so much confidence in how you just touch these things with gloves and alcohol that it makes me wonder sometimes if I've just been psyching myself out when trying to build a PC and stuff.
Electronics can not be fried if theres liquid or power, even if lets says the motherboard got wet, if electricity doesn’t run through it itll be fine. It should only take like 2-3 days to air dry aswell
You can literally douse electronics in water or submerge them even and it won't fry the board but as soon as you add power without it drying, that's when it fries

I had one of those when I was a kid although I think it was originally my stepdads now I’ve traded my way up to a Xbox One X although I’ve still got my 2nd games console that I received which is a Xbox 360 but I just like having the 360 as a beautiful sculpture as it just makes a lot of noise that’s why I don’t use it anymore but I must admit it’s a beautiful thing even to look at.

Rather interesting conpared to some of the other dust caked consoles. Topside of the PCBs: nice layer of dust, underside of PCBs: clean as a f***ing whistle xD

I left mine on while at school one time and I guess since it was old already, or somthin else just happened, but a couple capacitors went out so I just bought a couple of the same ones online and worked with my dad to repair it, taking apart these is actually kinda fun for a beginner practice kinda job
