    I Bought a Red Ring of Death Xbox 360 ! Can I Fix it? Xbox 360 Repair Retro
    Console Restoration-ASMR
    Restoring and repairing Xbox 360 with the red ring of death. I got this Xbox as part of a broken console lot from eBay.
    By checking the error code the console gives error code1023, which is almost always related to a cold solder in CPU or GPU.
    To repair the red ring of death I used a normal heat gun set it up to 400 degrees Celsius. The idea is to heat up the CPU and GPU until the solders underneath melt.
    Unfortunately, I did not install the CPU heat sink correctly, I realized this mistake later after I finished the video so I corrected it after the video
    This video shows you everything you need to know about taking apart your Xbox 360. If you need to replace the fan or the disk drive this video will show you how to get inside and disassemble your system. Since this system isn't the newest on the market anymore, it's cheaper to replace the parts yourself than it is to send them in for repairs.
    Restoration & Repair of Xbox 360 with Red Ring of Death
    I Restored This Yellowed Joystick and Play New Games with it - Retro Gaming Restoration
    In this episode I restore a yellowed retro joystick. The model is QuickShot Python 5. The controller is yellowed and even though it was sold as working to me on ebay, it turned out to be drifting to right.
    Thank you for watching my video!

    My mother always took away the toys that she had given to me when i "did something bad" and she always yelled: "Want full control over something? Go buy it yourself". The xbox 360 was the first console that i bought with my own money, with savings from school's lunch money. Oh man, the memories, the joy when she came to take it away and i said: "NOPE, I BOUGHT THIS ONE, I HAVE FULL CONTROL, JUST LIKE YOU TOLD ME TO DO", we laughed and since then i never asked for anything else from her, i owe her so much. I am very glad to see this console being brought back to live. Thanks. Very nice video.

Feels like yesterday that I had to mail it in to Microsoft, waited two months before they told me it was broken, and sent me a used replacement that was also broken. Those were the days...

    Oh dear. The ole heatgun treatment.
    The *only* proper fix is so remove the gpu and reball it with lead solder. You need a reballing station to do this, not a heatgun.
    This will work for a few weeks, maybe a months or so before the RROD returns. This isn't a real fix.

      This is a great "how not to" video

    • @bleachedbit
      @bleachedbit 2 года назад +3

      Unfortunately this user is correct. I've worked on thousands of these back in the day. This "OP (original poster)proposed fix" lasts about one week and then hair line fractures in the .6mm solderballs underneath the gpu happen again.(and goes back to 3ROD, three rings of death) It's a useful vod if you're going after a keyvault (dvdkey, console key to replace a banned keyvault usually cuz some player had a jtag and was running infected cod lobbies, lol) but other then that, it's not a fix in any way shape or form. That crappy tin/lead(combination) solder under the GPU and on it's seat .... (which is funny cuz microsoft knew completely about this, rip team xecuter) that's all gotta go with a solder sucker or solder braid. Take the chip "buy a GPU stencil" put a layer of flux on the chip and sammich it in the stencil and pour the solder balls into it (i usually go with silver bearing solder, why? works better for high temperature situations vs lead but hell even lead is better then tin/lead) flux (very specifically "paste") is there to make the solder stick to the GPU while you take the stencil apart just barely enough to keep everything aligned you can do this without a reflow station but man you got to have a really good eye. Pull stencil apart (if doing by eye) and use a "digital hot air gun with nozzle adapter to focus the airflow to the size of the chip" with almost zero air flow to get the solder balls to all "seat" on the gpu then put flux on motherboard and put chip very carefully on the motherboard and flow the chip to seat on the board. This can be done by eye and with a digital hot air gun with air flow control but man is it a bitch. Ya really should use a reballing station. I use an aoyue968A+ with a special nozzle designed for the GPU (can also locate) and do this by eye.

    • @bleachedbit
      @bleachedbit 2 года назад +2

      Also while ya got it apart ... i mean might as well upgrade to the availaible tech at the time. I can tell by the tamper proof sticker about what generation it is (op's post). Ditch that crappy 1st gen CPU heat sink and get the vulcan (found in elite models) and no more HT rubber band (belt driven, which is next up on the chopping block of things to fail) DVD roms, lol. Switch it to a liteon.(all mechanical) dvd drive.(you'll need to have tools to get at the keyvault to change dvdroms but it can be done)

      @@bleachedbit I experimented with some active cooling using a 3d printed shroud and a small blower fan. got about 10c off the temperatures. There is so little room though!
      ruclips.net/video/e_bQBSTmFLM/видео.html
      I also put a 2nd gen heatsink on another, fitted a 50 mm fan on the top of the heatpipe & drilled holes in the top of the case to expel the hot air. That worked as well :)

Damn thing sounded like a jet engine but yeah .... same effect, took about 10c off. These are good "prevention" pre-3rod measures but once ya go 3rod it won't protect ya from going 3rod again by doing what op did. That solder will just hair line fracture again. It's just a bad judgement call on microsoft's part.

      As someone who's taken apart many 360s, it was way too much. A little goes a long way, and it spreads out as soon as you put the heat sink back on. Also, he didn't actually fix the system with the heat gun special. It's going to fail again because this console, assuming it's all original, has a faulty GPU.

  • @solidhit2
    @solidhit2 2 года назад +2

    Everybody is so positive and that's nice but of course this is not the way to repair this console. It needs reballing, not reflowing. You just gave it a few more weeks / months of life before it breaks down again (if you use it regularly). I do not ignore the fact that you cared for this otherwise hopeless device but the internet has no shortage of videos proposing this technique as the solution when it clearly isn't. This is more of a facelift rather than repair! The video does help you to relax which may be the best about it.

    Pretty cool video, I hope you have no intention of selling this console though. First off, as a technician and modder myself, I don't screw with red ringed systems. Most of them have the red ring because the GPU itself is faulty, and to replace one of those requires a BGA rework station. Second, you don't need that much thermal paste on a chip with no IHS. just a small dot will do you, and the paste will spread once you drop the heat sink on the chip. Also one more point, the fans should not be that loud on any console, but since this console isn't modded, there isn't really an easy way to pull real time temps. Just some suggestions to help for the future

      You can’t install a new CPU because the encryption system works together with the NAND FLASH and the DVD drive. It will not boot anymore. And it would be difficult to purchase such parts. So it is really only possible to do reballing of existing ones.

    Nice better than what I thought to do along the way. But one thing, I’m not sure, is if the fans of the 360 are that loud possibly from being worn out, I would have bought a replacement fan for that. I remember replacing the fan for the WiiU when it sounded louder than usual. Got the fan off Amazon and after replacing it, it sounded much better. But like I said, I’m not sure if it would make a difference or not.

    It will work for maybe a day or 2 lol... Done this quite a few times on 360s. Maybe 1 or 2 lasted for 2-3 months but that's about it. Even those on their second fix just couldn't last that long again. Xbox 360 reflow is one I would definitely say will never work properly. I had gpus and laptops that worked perfectly fine for years after reflow but this damn thing just refuses to work properly no matter how many times you try. Some really bad design by Microsoft there.
    I really wonder if anyone ever tried to custom cool it by cutting the box and adding water cooling or large fans or whatever. Just for fun and science lol
