Some might say this stance is irrelevant now that Microsoft have retracted their DRM policies. I disagree. The fact that Microsoft even tried to pull that shit in the first place is a huge breach of trust. Add to that the lackluster and occasionally insulting presentation of the Xbox, and the fact that PS4 is actually cheaper and more powerful, and Xbox has lost this generation.
It's not that they did it in an underhand way or anything, just the fact that they did it. It irritates me that they ever took this kind of approach, it's like a push towards Orwellian gaming (God I hope that never happens), and it reeks of 'spend more money, peons!' They have been projected by Forbes to be around 50 million consoles sold. To put that in perspective, PS4 is sitting at over 100 million consoles sold, and Nintendo Switch has sold around 52 million. (And the Switch came out much later. Over 3 years later)
There's a deep and dark humor to the fact that everyone's outright going crazy over the fact that Sony just said, "What they just said earlier? We're not doing any of that." That alone was worth a loud, seemingly universal cheer.

At the same time, you gotta think, MS was trying to move forward instead of sitting in the same place forever. Sure "if it's not broken don't fix it," but if you are not going to attempt to break some boundaries your not going anywhere. We moved away from cartridges to CDs, and people were worried about breaking and scratching (which wasn't all that farfetched) but we moved. I think they could've done better then having it be "authentication based" but they were trying to have a different solution than constantly producing CDs, which could've lowered the price of games overall, or give them a better quality for the same price. You can't always blame them for being ambitious, you just gotta look behind the veil of "what does this mean to me" and look at the long road ahead.

I bought an Xbox One after, but wouldn't have if the restrictions had been in place. Tho the whole xbox probably would have went down the shitter. I mean seriously if you lose your internet for a few days, you can't play your console you paid hundreds of dollars for, I mean at least if cell service goes down, you can still connect your phone to wifi and use the device to a limited extent.

It was a strategic move by sony because of all the negativity MS got from the DRM policy, backfired and SONY took that opportunity and capitalized on it. Pretty simple plan and it work perfectly. MS is trying to do the Xbone as what they have done with PC games restriction of one computer and it backfired from most people i know.

People should never forget about this moment. Players should never let companies take away control of their gaming experiences. Microsoft tried with with aways online DRM on Xbox One back then, now they are trying again with Xcloud (which doesn't even let you have direcr access to the game's files locally).
Gen 8 would have been a terrible time to live. The Wii U, awful console. Xbox one, bad console. If the ps4 was also a bad console, it would have been dystopian until the switch saved it.

5 years later and I don't think people truly understand how truly pivotal of a moment this really was. Sony lost its dominance for an entire generation with the PS3 and its numerous early blunders that it took them YEARS of hard work to bounce back from. They had incredible exclusives, a reduced price, and many other things, but it was all about the 360 for hardcore gamers for 7 years. Microsoft shot themselves in the foot and even though none of the DRM restrictions came into the XBONE at launch, the damage was done, the stage was set, and Sony once again DOMINATED the competition once again. They won this race before it even started and they haven't been the same, or remotely even close, since this.
Even after a new gen Xbox still hasn't recovered. PS5 still outselling Series X/S like crazy. Xbox having to buy massive publishers just shows how hard it is to reverse such a mistake

Yeah same here. That E3 will be stuck on people head throughout this generation. MS can change their current policies anytime under their the Consumer agreement when people first turn on their Xbox One. It can happen again.
Well there are some people that are microsoft loyal like a friend of mine. But this whole thing that microsoft did, they got rid of it with an update or a patch. Doesnt that mean they can bring it back using a patch also? But why would they anyway lol.
At the same time, you gotta think, MS was trying to move forward instead of sitting in the same place forever. Sure "if it's not broken don't fix it," but if you are not going to attempt to break some boundaries your not going anywhere. We moved away from cartridges to CDs, and people were worried about breaking and scratching (which wasn't all that farfetched) but we moved. I think they could've done better then having it be "authentication based" but they were trying to have a different solution than constantly producing CDs, which could've lowered the price of games overall, or give them a better quality for the same price. You can't always blame them for being ambitious, you just gotta look behind the veil of "what does this mean to me" and look at the long road ahead.

You don’t even get a fucking stand or a disc drive for that expensive ass price.

I bought an Xbox One after, but wouldn't have if the restrictions had been in place. Tho the whole xbox probably would have went down the shitter. I mean seriously if you lose your internet for a few days, you can't play your console you paid hundreds of dollars for, I mean at least if cell service goes down, you can still connect your phone to wifi and use the device to a limited extent.

This was probably the one and only time that PlayStation and Xbox fans joined together to collectively laugh at Microsoft for their horrible decisions with the Xbox One. I remember having friends who used to shit on PlayStation all the time saying that they would skip the Xbox One entirely and switched to PS4.

FUTURIST1C I don't (only PS4) but agreed. The Xbox One has got some pretty nice exclusives, a far better line-up for the rest of the year and reliable online. I'm not getting it though, saving up for PC. PS4 and XOne are too similar for me to own both and not enough exclusives or friends using it either way.

At first, sorry for my bad english, second, Did you see the E3 show? This was right after Microsoft anounced that Xbox One needed to be always online and did not support used games etc. Sony was taking a piss out of Microsoft, thats why they said it. :)
It was a strategic move by sony because of all the negativity MS got from the DRM policy, backfired and SONY took that opportunity and capitalized on it. Pretty simple plan and it work perfectly. MS is trying to do the Xbone as what they have done with PC games restriction of one computer and it backfired from most people i know.

People should never forget about this moment. Players should never let companies take away control of their gaming experiences. Microsoft tried with with aways online DRM on Xbox One back then, now they are trying again with Xcloud (which doesn't even let you have direcr access to the game's files locally).
Gen 8 would have been a terrible time to live. The Wii U, awful console. Xbox one, bad console. If the ps4 was also a bad console, it would have been dystopian until the switch saved it.

@Tiago Pina I've been with Sony since PS1 so I won't be switching anytime soon. In all honesty, I do like Halo and Gears, so i don't hate Xbox at all. I just don't have enough time to devote to gaming like I use to so I can only justify owning one console between the two. I have a Switch but it's mostly for my kids.

5 years later and I don't think people truly understand how truly pivotal of a moment this really was. Sony lost its dominance for an entire generation with the PS3 and its numerous early blunders that it took them YEARS of hard work to bounce back from. They had incredible exclusives, a reduced price, and many other things, but it was all about the 360 for hardcore gamers for 7 years. Microsoft shot themselves in the foot and even though none of the DRM restrictions came into the XBONE at launch, the damage was done, the stage was set, and Sony once again DOMINATED the competition once again. They won this race before it even started and they haven't been the same, or remotely even close, since this.

God I still remember how it felt watching as over a couple days xbox just buried themselves and sony leapfrogged them. Years later and Xbox still hasnt quite made that dofference back.
Literally all Sony had to do was say "We're NOT doing what Microsoft is doing." And not only did they win the console battle, it wasn't even a contest. Microsoft walked back most of their "features," but by then the damage was already done.
The moment the xbox brand went on a monumental decline. They're still feeling the effects till this day.

This is a setback Microsoft will never recover from. Yes they will sell consoles (I own a Series S because it's cheap) but they will NEVER be a market leader in this lifetime. Xbox One and Don Mattrick irrevocably destroyed the Xbox brand.
