Opinion about this new format: I actually like it a lot more. I know it's a ton more work to do and more editing in the end but it definitely pays off. I also want to shift my future video making to this format despite it being a lot more prep- and post-work to do since people generally seem to enjoy it more than live-content.

3d movies in theaters always did strong. Usually at a ratio of 60% regular screening 40% 3d screening. It's just that only high end tvs had 3d while budget tvs nixed it to cut costs. If only it was a standard to be included, the way that every tv now is a smart tv. Also cost of 3d blurays was usually $30 because it included bluray, DVD, and digital as well. But it is nice having them all. DVDs however really not needed. Even so digital retailers like VUDU, apple, sony, google should have had rentable 3d versions. While I only know of VUDU selling 3d movies digitally and it unfortunately did not include the regular HD version which was sold separately...both at a high price. Normally if you rent a 4k movie now or buy one, you get HD and SD. Essentially every tier below. Games were great. I played Uncharted 3 and it gave it so much depth. It was like looking through a window. Even in movies. I dont care for pop put effects. Some are nifty and magical. But depth to me was the best part of 3d.
Absolutely loved this display! I used it with my PS3 and desktop and it worked perfectly. I always thought it looked amazing but that’s just me. Playing sonic generations was always fun.
Great video, thank you! I watched it from my Playstation 3D Display that I've used as my primary computer monitor for nearly a decade! I had no idea about the more modern hacks to give fun 3D support to games, I'll definitely be trying them out.

I play halo CE anniversary and I realised they made this game for 3D as it the anniversary graphic in 2d has issues like sniping behind the cover issues and also it to bright. With 3D enabled these problems are gone! It’s so much better to play in 3D mode, i’m not surprised everybody thought is going to be the next big thing and I’m still thinking why didn’t make it! I love it!
I bought one during Black Friday the year after it released for $99 @ Best Buy. I still have it with the original box and whenever I travel somewhere that I will be staying for a while my Sony PS Display comes along with my PS4.
I remember trying SimulView at a GameStop and it blew my mind. I hoped it would gain popularity with couch co-op games but sadly that never happened. It solved screen cheating and gave both players the full screen.
I've never had this despite using it all the time for a year and on and off for several more, but I also had it in front of a drafty window so maybe I accidentaly helped cool it lol.
Did I understand it correctly: It can receive a SBS frames and unpack them by itself, show each half of them sequentially and sync it with its glasses, correct?
I picked one of these up last month, and I love it! Of course, I had to buy batteries to fix the glasses I had from the Sony 3D TV I had which died 3 years ago, but it was worth it. The effect on some games is awesome, but none more than Zen Pinball 2 so far. The tables have amazing depth! Gonna have to get that eeprom though, just in case.
The Depth-map reprojection Technique used by reshade is also avaliable in the 3D drivers : Tridef : Power 3D mode (switchable in the overlay menus once inside a game) Tridef was the first driver to propose this feature. Nvidia 3D Vision : the technique is called "compatibility mode" (it's an advanced function for people who like to tweak)
I miss mine because it was an awesome monitor with no input lag, this was one of my big secrets back in BF3 and BF4 on how I always made top 3 on my team quite frequently. It was so smooth and my reaction time was so fast perfect for online gaming at the time
Lmao, this used to be my daily driver for over a year when i switched to PC EDIT: Just got done watching the video, and i 100% agree with what you said, but i think it made a fairly decent PC monitor. If you could look past the ghosting and sharpness. I remember i had long broken my 3D glasses way before PC gaming was a shine in my Eye. Before i was going to replace the monitor for a shiny new true 144hz display i decided to order some new 3d glasses for the TV. After a bit of finicking around with Nvidia drivers and settings, i was able to get it working. And the 3D effect it produced was amazing. I played on a 1070ti so it was hauling really well and never any dips in frames. I tried many demos and such, but the only game i ever got to work natively was Overwatch, to my surprise. It was just a game that was compatible with the 3D vision/drivers of nvidia, i found it on a list somewhere. So i tried it, and it was incredible. Reminded me of playing Tron legacy but smooth af and the depth was great. Nostalgia aside, this monitor had many shortcomings, but it did what it set out to do well.
@@concil1 I must be mistaken because I installed a NVidia card as recently as a few months ago and I swear the driver setup software still has an option to install 3D vision drivers.
at 4:00 I dont think it lowers the resolution of the video. The way 3d worked on those displays is that it would take half of the image and display it in a way that only one side would see and display the other half so only the other eye could see. This gave you the effect of depth perception and is why when you look through one lens you only see 720p thats because it is half of 1080p.
I've owned one for a couple years and use it as my main PS4 display as well as a secondary PC display. To be honest, I haven't noticed any issues with ghosting/motion/smooth scrolling on it, the colors are probably the best out of any screen I've used (and while my own have always been modest, I've used some quality panels) and it's just such a good size for a screen that's meant to be sitting fairly close to you rather than mounted on a wall a few meters away. I don't even own the glasses as mine came with just the panel haphazardly strapped between two pieces of styrofoam, but I've been low key looking for a second one of these and I'll definitely grab one if I see a complete set. I've also seen sets of three of these mounted vertically side by side to create a larger display, though the side bars on them are a little wide for that solution in my personal opinion.
The scrolling blur you showed with text when connected to the PC is pretty common on VA displays, specially the cheaper panels. Not sure the quality of panel used but it is a VA display. Nice technology but it has draw backs. Rather VA than TN.
my extremely cheap second monitor does this, so was looking to see if anyone has pointed it out. the box said nothing about which kind of LCD it is, but I guess it's VA from what you said. I had assumed it was just about the response time or the colour dithering.
The best 3D display these days is a modern VR headset. The Oculus Quest, Rift S and Valve Index all comfortably render 720p-ish virtual displays without the drawbacks to brightness, pixel response and refresh rate and are still actively supported hardware.
As an Index owner I'd say you still don't really get 720p quality. The only HMD that I know of that approaches that level of virtual resolution is the HP Reverb. There's some other drawbacks like godrays and comfort too. For as comfortable as I find my Index it still obviously gonna weigh more and be less comfortable than a pair of glasses. On the positive side it doesn't have the drawbacks you mentioned plus the 3D effect will always be perfect and you don't need to find a sweet spot like you would with glasses.
@@AndyAndyAndy11111 It depends on how far away/large the virtual display is. 720p is easily discernible at a reasonable size, though maybe not sized as a virtual monitor on a virtual desk. Even a 1080p desktop is usable, I regularly use Virtual Desktop on my Quest at that res though it can be a bit difficult to read very small text if there's not much contrast. I comfortably played Disco Elysium in bed for hours with my Quest using VD, the virtual display roughly positioned where my ceiling is.
Yeah it's super high res per-eye. Maybe they are referring to looking at a virtual monitor, but the density of that will be the direct percentage of each eye it fills up. And in VR you are not limited to wall space, so..?
Someone may have pointed this out already but I think the resolution drop isn't exactly 720p for 3d movies. It's displaying 1920x1080 but divides the horizontal resolution for each eye. So it's more like 920x1080.
I still have it and tried to take it to repair shop. The guy said that gaming monitors aren’t meant to be repaired they’re most likely to be replaced. He tried looking the parts needed to fix it but found nothing. It really sucks because I really like the monitor, but I keep on getting the occasional black screen.
um explain why the tv needs a flash of its eeprom? is the eeprom chips on these tvs known bad and need to be replaced with a better eeprom chip then re-flashed?
I think you almost have it. Considering he’s talking about an out of production eeprom, I think it needs to be the same model as the original, hence why he showed an entire tube of them in the video.
After a bit of googling, EEPROM on the display seems to go bad and display no longer works. You can find a bit more information if you google “PS3 3D display blinking light”.
@@eggmane Thankfully I haven't experienced that with mine yet, however I have had the right side of the screen literally fall out due to the weak adhesive they used. It's a good screen, but the build quality sucks.

It's crazy that we went from virtual boy, to this to modern day VR; being able to chill in so many different digital environments, play golf, chess, etc with folks has been a crazy experience for someone that ended up chronically ill in recent years.
TV and monitor companies have nothing to do with VR and are not focusing on that. It's simply hard to sell something that requires you to wear glasses to use (such as this video demos) or something where you have to watch from dead center (3DS method). Plus at that time there was some major 3D movie fatigue, every other movie was coming out in 3D. Movies made the tech feel gimmicky which is a shame because I think it shines best in games.
5:47 That's very od on viewing angles. Mine has no issue, I've never even thought of it and that's something I always notice. Mine looks great from every angle. Maybe they used different panels over the few years it was produced? I also notice my eeprom issues are very different from most. Most, their's just died. Years ago. Mine has small issues, but always turns right back on. Really feeling like these changed a bit over production 8:15 Again, I simply just don't have that text ghosting issue on mine. Defintely strange
Warning, wall of text incoming because I have to thank you: 7:50 Thank you for going over this 1 very detail, because I have looked EVERYWHERE TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO ALLEVIATE THIS. It is the ONLY complaint I have with this monitor. The last thing I had was an oldschool television by Curtis Mathes. You know, big equipment covered by a large frame and that glorious SD screen that was bright, but anything you watched on it was very vibrant and did NOT have this very issue I have with the Sony display. I don't know how the older TVs used to work, but when I asked my cousin about this little thing here, he explained to me that this has to do with the PANEL. He asked whether it was a TN panel or IPS panel display. Obviously if I know anything about that, then the monitor is most definitely not an IPS class monitor and definitely not OLED, because from what I understand and have noticed, is that this little annoyance does not happen on those displays. Mostly. However, he did end up getting an IPS monitor from ViewSonic around the time I asked him about this. Mother of Croatia did I really see what not having this issue was like. Same amazing colors, better viewing angles, but most importantly, it DID NOT have this strange motion blur effect when he played games. Now I have played games that make this almost not apparent at all, BattleField Bad Company 2 is the first to come to mind and I once watched my sister play Fortnite on it. As you've probably noticed, when the images on the screen are still, the picture quality stands up very well to other monitors and Televisions, I've compared it to those of the family. But ONLY when any information on the screen is in motion will that blur effect happen and I always have to 'get into it' when I'm gaming or watching a movie in order for me to not notice it as much. So yeah. Even to this day, the picture quality of this Display still holds up. It's beautiful, I will always feel this way. The problem is this little annoyance. If the display did not have this issue, I would recommend it to anyone. Like you, I would not recommend this to people who rely on their PCs for everything, especially gaming, unless PC gaming is able to lessen the blow due to better frame rates and visual quality, although I wouldn't know. I still don't have a gaming RIG. I would also not recommend it to anyone who is used to OLED televisions. You'll love the picture quality but then start noticing that something is 'off' when you watch stuff on it. And anyway, it's more for gaming as was the intention. You're supposed to sit very close to it. I think that's the last of my gripes, in which case, thank you again. RUclips got it right for once and recommended me a video that ACTUALLY interests me. This is my first time to your channel and I appreciate what you've done here. I'll pay my dues by subscribing, hitting that like button and clicking the notification bell. If you end up finding a way to workaround this issue, I'd really like hearing about it.
It's been 2 years since this video and VR has had a little more time to evolve. Would be interesting to get your thoughts on the soon to be released PSVR2 if and when you ever get to try it , it's supposedly has fixed a lot of the vr issues that made you physically sick
I have this TV, and ordered glasses for it months ago but got lost in the mail. I looked on Ebay and now those glasses are going to steep prices. Can I use alternative glasses at all? If so, what would work with it? If nothing else, I'll have to plunk down some money soon.

8:00 to 8:11 so if you go and cycle through the 3d settings and get back to normal, it basically completely fixes this motion. The sad thing is, you have to do it again every time you turn on the monitor.
I have a 50" 1080P LG TV in my livingroom that does 3D and we scarcely use it. If I had a PS3 monitor I might use it more. VR actually doesn't make my partner sick but she can't look at the 3D TV for long.

@@bonedicoot If I recall correctly I believe the problem was that the hardware eventually cooked itself? Was it similar to a 360 RROD issue? That sounds about right. Eventually it would manifest in constant flickering to black before the thing died.
It's capacitor issues on the main board we have to replace them, they are so cheap they don't pop (like most caps do when going bad) but leak slowly and sometimes go bad without visible signs of going out. So yeah get a bright flashlight and really look around for yellowish/clear residues at or around the caps.
hamasaki kenji absolutely right about the flickering and then just going black and dying out. I was lucky enough to to have them repair mine for me and get it back. It still works fine but flickers sometimes which is fixed by reinserting the hdmi

This video was EXCELLENT my guy. Absolutely some great work with great commentary. I fully enjoyed the whole adventure. Looking forward to your next deep dive. Well done sir. Incredible well done.
It has 2 HDMI ports and a component input so I'm not sure why you say it can't accept television broadcasts being as basically all modern cable and satellite boxes output via HDMI. And there's also tons of converter boxes to convert composite and OTA signal to component or HDMI.
Very interesting! I absolutely love 3D (and VR - like you, I don't see them as competitors) and I've been very sad to see its decline in recent years. I'll continue using my current 3D TV to watch 3D movies until the tech breaks, then I guess it's off to eBay or something because I don't see why I'd ever want to see a movie in 2D if it's available in 3D. To me, it's just such a leap forward, SO much more immersive. I've been looking for a decent 3D-capable computer monitor. Too bad this doesn't seem to be it either. I don't want to get something with 3D-vision; 1) because proprietary and, as shown here, it's sensitive to Nvidia losing interest, 2) because I just don't like shutter glasses in general. I've never tried a pair that worked well for me. Polarized glasses work a lot better for me, better sense of continuity in the image. And also cheaper and easier to replace, of course.
Mikael Bergström I have a 3DTV and agree with you on watching 3D movies in 2D. I can’t imagine watching Avatar, Monsters U, Up, Sin City 2, Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse, Moana or Finding Dory flat.
I'd advice you to go get an extra 3d tv now while they're affordable. The more expensive models like the big LG passive ones, forget about it, they're gone before you see them and they're expensive. Prices will only go up as there are fewer and fewer displays left, even more so when the last 2020 3d monitors are gone as well.
@@thespearofthor9629 Currently, I'm mostly thinking I'll replace my 3D TV with just watching 3D movies in VR when it finally gives up. I already watch a lot of movies on various services through Virtual Desktop on my Quest 2, and the cinema-like experience almost makes up for the not-quite-there-yet pixel density. Give it a few years and the resolution will be there, and in a virtual theater there's no reason each eye can't be shown a different image.

Opinion about this new format: I actually like it a lot more. I know it's a ton more work to do and more editing in the end but it definitely pays off. I also want to shift my future video making to this format despite it being a lot more prep- and post-work to do since people generally seem to enjoy it more than live-content.
I saw one of these at a thrift store. I'd never heard of it prior! I was very tempted to buy it just because it was an oddity. I'm glad you bought one and shared your experiences!
How much was it? I'd probably pick up a second one if I could.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 also has this Simulview feature
ohh shit for real
I remember thinking it was the end of screen cheating lol
Black ops 2 was good in 3d. But with the advent of playable VR it is pretty much redundant now.

Man I always wanted one of these
I worked on a contract for roughly a year that had one of these displays...minus the shutter glasses...

I'll be honest I don't notice much difference
Absolutely loved this display! I used it with my PS3 and desktop and it worked perfectly. I always thought it looked amazing but that’s just me. Playing sonic generations was always fun.
Considering this is the first video of you've that I've seen, and the fact I didn't bat an eye at the b-roll, I'd say your experiment was a success.
Great video, thank you! I watched it from my Playstation 3D Display that I've used as my primary computer monitor for nearly a decade! I had no idea about the more modern hacks to give fun 3D support to games, I'll definitely be trying them out.
I like how the display looks like a big PSP Go, would like to see how PSP games through component would look on this, and man I remember back when 3D like this was "The Future™". Glad to know this exists.
The TV even has a dedicated PSP Zoom to show a PSP game in full screen.
Component looks great on this! HDMI looks even better. Games look smooth on this, especially with PC. Images look very smooth on this thing
You could also use 3d shaders to anaglyph the games too... I remember a plugin for that. Its rather funny, the stars in battlefront pop out of space.
I love the shape me and my boyfriend were really excited to receive it because it looked like a big psp, just thought it was so cool, and it is.
Thanks for time traveling from the early 90s to review this for us.
3d was so cool, i have a 2012 55' Panasonic Viera and its such a joy to look at
i didnt see you mention black ops 2 for simulview. but i do remember doing simulview on zombies for that game and it being fantastic ( a bit dark) but absolutely fantastic

Ps : i bought a ps3 again in 2023 and still use my 2011 Panasonic plasma 3D TV. So happy to enjoy again Uncharted 3(D) Discover Resistance 3(D) and Ico & Shadow of the colossus 3D . Good memories with Killzone 3(D) ... good video
I just bought a 32 inch passive 3D tv a bush tv from 2012!
It’s really bright and works pretty well!
I love it!
One of the few sony tvs that had a ‘psp’ mode that zoomed the psp game picture. Wtf sony. Came out at the end of the psp life.
I bought one during Black Friday the year after it released for $99 @ Best Buy. I still have it with the original box and whenever I travel somewhere that I will be staying for a while my Sony PS Display comes along with my PS4.
This video is great! I hope the new thumbnail helps more people see it, because it's very well scripted, presented, and edited :)
Also that Compaq hat is delightful!
I remember trying SimulView at a GameStop and it blew my mind. I hoped it would gain popularity with couch co-op games but sadly that never happened. It solved screen cheating and gave both players the full screen.
playing "splitscreen" Killzone 3 with this thing was absolutely incredible
I always ignored these because of the failing pic chip but that kind of repair is cake these days. Thank for reminding me.
I have this and used it to play most of my PS3 and PS4 games. Made a great travel monitor.
This is the display I'm using now, and have been using it for many years. Great display but one issue, random hdmi blackouts that last 1-6 seconds.
Same here but for some reason it only happens with my ps3 ps4 and ps4 pro. It never happens on anything else.
Try turning HDMI Control off (or whatever it's called). That fixed it for me.
Need some cooling in the back, ppl have moded with pc fans I think
I've never had this despite using it all the time for a year and on and off for several more, but I also had it in front of a drafty window so maybe I accidentaly helped cool it lol.
If you are using a game console, disable HDCP and HDMI Control. That fixed it for me!
Did I understand it correctly:
It can receive a SBS frames and unpack them by itself, show each half of them sequentially and sync it with its glasses, correct?
I picked one of these up last month, and I love it! Of course, I had to buy batteries to fix the glasses I had from the Sony 3D TV I had which died 3 years ago, but it was worth it. The effect on some games is awesome, but none more than Zen Pinball 2 so far. The tables have amazing depth!
Gonna have to get that eeprom though, just in case.
The Depth-map reprojection Technique used by reshade is also avaliable in the 3D drivers :
Tridef : Power 3D mode (switchable in the overlay menus once inside a game) Tridef was the first driver to propose this feature.
It was so smooth and my reaction time was so fast perfect for online gaming at the time
It actually has a hidden usb on the side of the monitor under a clip you have to pull out
God bless you thanks for this

Jfc, I’ve had this display since it launched, and I never knew that!
I still have this tv at home and i love. I don't why but my tv have in the right corner a spot that is little dark. Does anyone know why?
Lmao, this used to be my daily driver for over a year when i switched to PC
EDIT: Just got done watching the video, and i 100% agree with what you said, but i think it made a fairly decent PC monitor. Nostalgia aside, this monitor had many shortcomings, but it did what it set out to do well.

at 4:00 I dont think it lowers the resolution of the video. The way 3d worked on those displays is that it would take half of the image and display it in a way that only one side would see and display the other half so only the other eye could see. This gave you the effect of depth perception and is why when you look through one lens you only see 720p thats because it is half of 1080p.
now someone needs to do this exact thing in 2019 with 1440p and 120 hz we have the tech

It's probably related to slow pixel response times. Cheap office TN monitors can also suffer from this
I've forgotten about the push for standard 3D. There were base 3DTV's, this and even the 3DS. That feature just died so quietly
What are y'all talking about with this 720p thing- I have an Index and I'm not following.
720p? Isn't ot supposed to be high res per eye?
Yeah it's super high res per-eye. Maybe they are referring to looking at a virtual monitor, but the density of that will be the direct percentage of each eye it fills up. And in VR you are not limited to wall space, so..?
Someone may have pointed this out already but I think the resolution drop isn't exactly 720p for 3d movies. It's displaying 1920x1080 but divides the horizontal resolution for each eye. So it's more like 920x1080.

um explain why the tv needs a flash of its eeprom? is the eeprom chips on these tvs known bad and need to be replaced with a better eeprom chip then re-flashed?
I think you almost have it. Considering he’s talking about an out of production eeprom, I think it needs to be the same model as the original, hence why he showed an entire tube of them in the video.
@@FlamingPhoenix40 It's quite trivial to make an SPI Flash to EEPROM adapter, you could do that with a $1 CPLD, if an MCU isn't fast enough.
After a bit of googling, EEPROM on the display seems to go bad and display no longer works.
You can find a bit more information if you google “PS3 3D display blinking light”.
The eeprom burns out over time because Sony put too much voltage to the chip.

Can't say I've ever heard of this thing until today. Interesting.
It's crazy that we went from virtual boy, to this to modern day VR; being able to chill in so many different digital environments, play golf, chess, etc with folks has been a crazy experience for someone that ended up chronically ill in recent years.
This technology has seen so little innovation, it must be extremely hard to accomplish I guess.
Lilljacob They are focusing on VR
I wasn't too interested in vr until Borderlands 2 got vr support. If only I had some more cash
Really feeling like these changed a bit over production
8:15 Again, I simply just don't have that text ghosting issue on mine. Defintely strange
Warning, wall of text incoming because I have to thank you:
7:50
Thank you for going over this 1 very detail, because I have looked EVERYWHERE TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO ALLEVIATE THIS.

I just wanted to point out 240 hz is correct and used in 3D. It is only used as an anti flicker vs 120hz 3D. The glasses can do both. 240 is also used in the simul view mode.
