- Join us in this episode as we review one of the more under-appreciated classics... the E39 528i.
We believe this to be possibly one of the best values in recent classics today.
From the robust M52B28 motor to the smooth driving dynamics even by today’s standards, this car checks all the right boxes.
The seats are from an era when seats weren’t sculpted and were actually comfortable.
The car came with standard features 20+ years ago that are optional on automobiles produced today.
The example loaned to us for this video is particularly nice and comes to us from Kenton of kentuckiana_car_spotted.
Kenton’s Instagram focuses on exotics found in the Midwest.

I Have it 410 000kmh
No single problem, engine is so clean and i love it so much
It’s a timeless car that doesn’t age. Thanks for watching
1997/98 528i single vsnos with an iron block is a bullet proof drive train. Personally the 5 speed manual is where it’s at. Just the perfect daily driver. Got mine with 104k miles for 4,000. There is not a better used car. When new I had the 540i 6 speed and drove the M5. Both are really cool, but they cost WAY more now to keep on the road. BMW had mastered the inline 6 by 97…..it was their masterpiece workhorse. The automotive press went nuts in 97 when these came out. There was nothing like them.
The 528 has the rack and pinion vs ball in 540. I prefer the steering of 528.
The seats are incredible. If you want a daily driver you can put 400k on and just drive everywhere on long trips etc …..you won’t find a finer car for the $.
I’ll take my 5 speed 97 over any new car including Tesla.
You can get a laptop and hotspot and have tech in your car lol
For 4 grand and 30 mpg…..I could add up all the gas saved on a 60k Tesla plus depreciation and I’m still way ahead of the game.
Most of the people not into the 528 have only drove the auto….the manual is a better drive and almost a second faster.
It’s the perfect daily driver and best current deal in the US. 3 or 4k???? C’mon. So much car for the $ it’s laughable…..bulletproof and a better drive than any Audi or Benz. Timeless. E39….Maybe the best overall car ever made non sports.
Couldn’t agree more. Automatic is perfect for a cruiser. Manual is preferred but you hit the nail on the head here. Quite possibly one of the most overlooked cars available.
Does the 528i cost a lot to keep on the road?
It depends on a number of variables but… a DIY oil change is around $100. Repairs are economical if done yourself. They take top tier fuel but get relatively reasonable fuel economy. Insurance costs are nominal compared to other cars in the states.
E39. Best bmw ever
It’s certainly one of our favorites!
Thank you for helping me find it! I still love it!
You are welcome!
I also have one that is the same year and color. Everything you say about this car is correct and true. It has spoiled me for other cars.
Thank you for watching!
Awesome car! Thank you!!
Great channel, cheers subbed
Thank you!
I had a UK 528i with the M52TUB28 engine. Right on the changeover year. Mine had the Steptronic ZF auto 'box. Nice car, Reliable, comfortable but a bit cramped. The 2.8 engine was adequate, not under powered, but the slightly later 530i was substantially quicker, albeit more hungry at the pumps if you chose to use the power all the time. If you're rich then go for a 540i.
Our car’s owner did indeed procure a low mileage 540i manual car. He now happily enjoys the best of both worlds. Thank you for sharing!
The Ultimate Driving Machine💪🏻Nice Video .Whats the Music Title?
I honestly don’t recall. You can find it on Epidemic Sound.
Add factory (look) navigation. Get ready to replace front lower control arms. Keep an eye on coolant level weekly. It is fast. It is not quick. Know the difference. 145 mph is a fast top speed. 0-60 mph in 7.8 seconds is not considered quick anymore. 22 mpg is pretty good. It would be so much (15%) better with a modern six or eight speed transmission.
It’s a fantastic car even by today’s standards properly maintained.
Just bought a 528i aut from 98 awesome car. Have had many bmw's all from bmw 2002/e30/e46/e28/e34/e53 petrol and diesel this on are so silent and comfort amazing
We have similar taste. I’ve had 3 2002s, E30, E36 M3, 2 E46, E83…
I have this car with Android head unit which reads the I-Bus and gives me massive computer readout in the Resler I-BussApp. It is amazing car. The transmission is a GM Isuzu if you have automatic as I have unfortunately.
They are great cars. The owner of this classic just picked up an E39 540i 6 speed that will be hitting the channel soon.
What headunit do you have? I have a 1999 528 and would be interested in that aswell
@@smi2931 I picked up the Xtrons. Works great and looks stock
I bought a non-running one for 800 dollars, I believe the issue to be an EWS Module, God willing I will get it running
That’s awesome! EWS should be relatively easy to sort. Let us know how it works out!
Is the BMW e39 528i fast enough?
Speed is relative. Granted, cars are faster today than they were more than 20 years ago but… this car still has enough power to get out of its own way.
Fast enough for me. It keeps up with traffic.
And now add manual transmission and voilà.
Couldn’t agree more! Thank you for watching!
It makes me so sad when these cars end up in the hands of first time drivers.
This one has been maintained and cared for proper after 2 years in this young drivers hands.
An agile tank of a car
Couldn’t agree more…
