I bought a e39 few months ago because I actually fell in love by the way it looks. I always wanted a v8 and the prices of v8 cars in Australia are expensive so I opted out on a 540i. I have an update 535 M-Sport E39 (Dec 2000 build) which I purchase about 4 years ago here in Australia for A$7,500, in reasonable nick but needed a bit of work. It would have been nicer if I had been able to get my hands on a 540 but they still pull reasonable money in Oz. The 535 isn’t as quick but I understand you can work the 535 a little more. Main issues I’ve found so far have been 1) Light control Module has created some gremlins with lights (intermittent headlight and reverse light issues and remote locking). 2) Pixel issues with dash and radio (not an easy fix) 3) Some small oil leaks 4) Perished plastics which I have found hard or expensive to source I.E. MSport door sill plates - these are proving to be hugely expensive ($1,600 a set), windscreen Cowell panel (A$200), windscreen Cowell covers ($100). There are also a number of other plastic component I will need to replace moving forward but this is the price you pay for having an older classic vehicle. It’s worth noting most of the interior trim and plastics have held up well for a 24 year old car.😂

Ive owned 3 E39 5 series, buut sadly never found the M5 that felt like it was worth the asking price.. I do currently own 3 5 series cars; a 2002 E39 540i 6MT, a 2010 E60 535i FBO (Est 400whp), and a 2016 FBO 535i (Et 400whp)... I might be the very definition of wut a fanboy is! I'm 26 and I just bought a 2003 E39 Touring MT with the diesel M47 motor, and I just keep loving it more every single day. The suspension is on par with any of today's S class or 7 series. Yes, it's not the fastest car on the road, but the torque of that motor is more than enough, and i'm averaging 4.5 - 5L/100km in this 21 year old car that weighs 1.7 tons (how crazy is that?????). It's the perfect car for road trips, the way the interior is designed (the seating, hand rest positions) is very well thought out. I put the 2nd row seats down, and I can easily sleep back there with a mattress. I'm gonna keep this car forever, and I intend to keep it on the road.

Did you say the E39 has handling issues ? You gotta be kidding, handling is this car's best attributes, the M5 when it came out was putting to shame sports cars on the skidpad and on race tracks. The weight and wheelbase have nothing to do with it not entering any races, since BMW races the M6 Gt3, which is heavier and has a longer wheelbase than an E39 M5. They race Bentley Continentals that we know are very heavy. I can't think of reason on why it wasn't entered, but then again, I do not know the regulations of the day, in which class an M5 could've fit in order to race. There have been a few hot cars in history that could not race because there was no class for them to fit in.

E39’s are excellent cars. Long time owner of M5’s I can say first hand they are perfect in original form, all you need is a pair of rear cans to better hear the engine. Sort of painful to watch the dropped and poked cars in this video bouncing along, you know the fenders are being damaged too. M5’s are not track cars, they are great GT cruisers. It's a solid look, for sure. But don't go broke, dude! 83K subs is great, and I bet you'll hit 100K before the end of the year, but pay yourself well. I love this deep dive, and will look into getting an old M5 for fun if I can trust it to be Reliable. But I also love when you talk about your cars and what you're doing with them, and that needs income. GL HF

I haven't watched you for about half a year now. You have improved much in editing and more, but 1 thing I would recommend you to improve is your Audio quality and volume, the music is more in the foreground and your voice is more in the backround, otherwise fantastic

I didn't realise the American version was de limited as the M5 only did 155mph in Europe

I own a 1997 e39 540i, one of the funnest cars I have ever driven, I have it on coil overs and with a custom cat back exhaust, one of the best bmws ever made in my opinion. Would take another one of these over a newer gen m5 and day

Yes, your spot on right. I have a late model M5 and it does not even compare to the e39 I used to own.

As a 530i owner for 3 years, and over 300k km i did NOTHING past 3 years than oil changes. Just buy it and enjoy. The fact is its bit understeery and soft stock.

Does the e39 M5 handle poorly??? Not I'm my opinion. There's no easier care to predictably drift around a roundabout or any of the 90 degree turns on the way to my house. Simply the greatest car ever made!!!!

Do a similar video about the E38. Its a car worth doing.

2 reasons why I disagree with the E39 being so great:
    1) it had a porpoise influence, styled front-end (typical of late 90's/early 00's cars)
    2) E38 being far cooler even to this day...
The other thing for me is, placing emphasis on the performance model of a classic car is kinda like an oxymoron.
i.e. its kinda embarrassing driving around in a car with 4 exhaust pipes when a modern hot-hatch can run circles around you...
Cruising in a clean, all black E38 with hot wheels is just cool; and you don't need the performance model.
You can pull-up at a club, Wall Street, girlfriend's house, a wedding in that and its respectable...

ive been privileged enough to have owned 2 of these dream machines, and i can hands down say that it does everything extremely well, no its not as fast as the e46 around a corner but it will destroy the m3 at every straight and its still as stable as the m3 in the corners, just not as fast. still though its still managing under 8 min around the nurburgring and its a fricking family saloon... do you really need that extra handling the m3 gives you? i can say with hands on experience from both the m3 and m5 that no. i would 100% choose the M5 every day of the week

Why did you not feature the 530i.? Arguably the best of the lesser models.!! The V8's showed themselves to be very costly maintenance wise whereas the M54 motor if maintained correctly was super reliable, handled better because of the rack & pinion steering & less weight over the front axle, and a top speed governed at 250 km/h.
