The mother of one of my daughter’s oldest friends (since Kindergarten) just lost her 5 year battle to ovarian cancer. The mom was in the middle of making a quilt for my daughter’s friend’s daughter (her granddaughter), using the granddaughter’s receiving blankets from when she was a baby. (The granddaughter is 13 now.) Sadly, she did not finish. She got all the blocks constructed and sewn together and was in the process of quilting the backing and batting in between. When my daughter’s friend came to me and asked me if I could finish the quilt, I was both truly honored and terribly nervous! I sew clothing for my own granddaughter; I crochet afghans, but I have never quilted! I’m so impressed by this presentation of so many quilting steps and tips all at once. The presenter is focused on the tasks and steps involved, is clear, concise, and prepared for teaching. The camera angles and details are excellent. I can’t wait to practice what I’ve learned here and will probably return more than once for a refresher when I’m ready to bind my first quilt.
You said it!!! I soooo appreciate her thoroughness of instruction, as well. You are an excellent teacher, Donna!!!!! Invaluable information, especially since I’ve been so scared and dreading when I get to the point of having to put on a border. You made it seem very doable. Thank you immensely!!!!!
This was the best explanation of borders and yardage I've seen. Thank you for your wonderful videos. You have taught me a lot. Yes please on the video of the other steps to the longarm.
You made the actual quilting and binding much less intimidating than many other videos. I feel more confident that I can do this! Still going to start small, but I can be just as proud of a table runner as anything else 🙂 Thanks so much!
My mother has sewn for many. Years all through my formative years and currently.Consequently, I sew simple things. At 55 I find myself at home with adrenal insufficiency and alot of time on my hands not working with a great quality sewing machine.I bought several quilt face sheets to make some personal custom quilts to keep me busy.I had planned to take these finished quilt face sheets to the long arm quilter. You helped me so so much with the borders and binding.Thank you so much for a great inspirational informative video.
I really learned a lot watching this tutorial. I’ve watched different methods of binding and to be honest I have never understood why some quilters measure the overlap of the last part of the binding by the width of the binding. My brain doesn’t understand that logic. You have explained all of it in a way I understand, thank you! 😊
Donna, this was fabulous! I'm an experienced quilter but your tutorials are so smooth and methodical that I feel like tackling my UFOs right away. Thank you!
. I too would like to see more on the long arm use, like how do you do the second row of quilting and get it matched up? Thank you for your videos they are so clear and very helpful.
As someone getting back into quilting after a 10 year hiatus, I am so glad I've found Donna and her tutorials, they're so helpful! She is a great teacher, her explanations and demonstrations are so clear. Thank you!
I am also back to quilting after 10-year hiatus. She is a great teacher, and makes it seem so easy. I wish I knew what the pattern was for this Robert Kaufman fabric quilt, I love it!!
Even though I know the steps to finish a quilt, it was like a refreshing tutorial. The precise methods of it all. It was nice of you to present it. Your patience of teaching is appreciated! 😍 I have sooo many projects of yours on my to do list I don’t know which one to do next 🤩thank u Donna.
Don't forget to add a label to your finished quilt! Whether it's a gift for someone else or a quilt for yourself, having a name & date is such a great bit of history. And if it's for a special event, add that info & the place. It can be handwritten on a fabric remnant with a archive pen or printed from the computer or embroidered - whatever works for you.
Lately I have been writing directly on the backing because I saw a quilt I MADE at a Christmas Bazar type of sale. Someone had removed my label and added hers. Needless to say I was 😠 angry. So now I write on the backing itself. Yes, it can still be covered but can't be removed.
My jaw literally just dropped watching how you finished stitching the binding down to the top. So easy!! Just create a half inch overhang then finish with a quarter inch seam!! Wow. I've been doing the pocket method as I could never do the other complicated ways. Amazing! Thank you so much!!
Greetings, i use a thermal bating,(i live the UK) which is thicker so if this is the case with you or any other reader make your binding strip just a bit wider, to make sure you have enough to wrap round, from the front to back....
Every time I watch one of your videos, I learn. I can't thank you enough for that as well as giving me the courage to quilt. Pretty cool indeed. Thank you for sharing your experience and creativity. And of course, your working space. I call it the happy place truth be told haha Cheers from BC Canada 🇨🇦 ❤
This is such a good tutorial to be able to go back to refresh me. When it’s been awhile since I’ve gone through the process, I’m glad to be able to refer back to this. Thank you, Donna.
Your machine binding steps are just geniuos! Perfectly done! You are a great teacher! Perfect timing and pauses between steps with a GREAT cameraman! Can see great! You truly lovr what you do! What a happy life you have! Blessings!
Oh man ... I fell in love with the fabrics you used in that black/rose quilt ... Not enough hours in the day, beds to hold - all the quilts I want to make .... and KEEP, lol
Your a great teacher Donna! Even though I know the steps, it’s always nice to watch and see how others do it. Never know what great tips you can pick up. Would love to hear more about your long arm machine. Happy Sewing ✂️🧵🌸💕
I've just finished a 'lockdown quilt' for my grand-daughter. It took me all year as it was quite a complex pattern. I hadn't thought about the fact that I had to back it, quilt it and bind it!! So this tutorial has been a life saver. I am so glad I've found your videos. Thank you so much as they are wonderfully clear and lovely to watch. I should get the quilt completed tomorrow. Phewph!
Thank you, Donna, for this video. It helped us finish our niece's wedding quilt. Due to Covid we could not attend, but the finished quilt surrounded the newlyweds with our love. We could not have done it without you.
Very clear, easy to understand and see as you went step by step. I just bought a seeing machine and haven't sewn anything at all in 40 years. I've subscribed and am looking forward to learning as I go.
You are by far my favorite quilter for tutorials. Very easy to follow along and you do not leave things out. Alot of times I find myself talking (cussing) at the video because I have so many unanswered questions. Sometimes it causes quite the commotion because the entire family comes running to see what is wrong. Oops... Thank you for allowing me to get through this binding without a bunch of yahoo's storming my sewing room. :)
I'm a newish quilter and I have watched countless RUclips videos on quilting. You do the best at explaining. You're a great instructor! Thanks for all your videos.
I would be thrilled for you to do a detailed tutorial on the Gammill since I just bought a Gammill 22” without a computer right before the pandemic hit so I wasn’t able to get my training...I’ve been relying on you tubes and some are pretty good, but there’s also a lot of confusion and everyone does it slightly different. My biggest issue is loading correctly and using pantos...Ive never seen you use them since I’ve always seen you use the computer, but I know there’s many of us who need to learn how to advance to line up correctly. You keep your instructions simple, but cover everything and do it in a way we all understand.. your a born teacher Donna and I think I can speak for everyone when I say....thank you for taking the time to make all these great videos. Please Keep them coming
Thank you so much. I really enjoyed watching. However I was surprised to see you stitch the boarders and binding with straight seams when attaching pieces. I learned to always attach pieces with a slanted or 45 degree sewing line.
What a breath of fresh air! I quilt sporadically and sometimes feel like a beginner each time. I know I'll be referring to your tutorial in my journey. I especially like your attention to details like the finger pressing, which way the seams go naturally, etc. Thank you very much for making me feel like I can do more than I already have!
This was exactly what I was looking for the presenter is extremely knowledgeable and explain it such away it is easy to understand. I’ve watched the video twice, I would recommend it for a newbie to quilting.
Donna, I would like to see more details about determining the setup quilt patterns on the long arm. It would help me communicate better with my long arm provider. Thank you.
I too would love to see your set up for the quilt pattern but also I’d like to understand in more detail how you get the 3 layers aligned and ready on the long arm frame. Thank you so much for your wonderful videos. You are so very clear. You make it look so easy too. THANK YOU so much
I thought I knew everything you were showing … until you got to the corner of the binding! Using the pin to pivot the back binding until it made a 45º corner was something I had never seen before. Thanks!
Finally, An awesome step by step that is clear for those of us novices. Thank you so much for this. Now I may be able to get my edges to look better. I have been adding the edges but had no clue on how to make those mitered corners. I love all your videos. Like others I would love to see videos on long arm however for those of us that do not own one like me I would prefer videos on how to free motion on our home sewing machine. Thanks Donna!
Thank you so much, Donna! I am a first-time quilter and have hardly sewed before in my life! You have no idea how many times I’ve watched segments of this video. Very helpful. I’ll look for others of yours.
Thank you so much! This is the first tutorial that I found that explains everything in a way I understand! I am new to quilting and no one explains the entire process. It all is clear now, thanks to you!
Thank you for this video. I am 77 years old and is just starting to make quilts and other things. I am so glad to see all your videos. They are great. Thank you.
I wanted to have a go at quilting, having very tiny amount of sewing knowledge, thought it would be really hard. But your tutorial really made me feel I can do this and get excited. I was very lucky to win a sewing machine recently and am learning how to use it, I've started with napkins to practice and now have the bug ~ quilting here I come
If you use the precuts - 5" squares (charm packs) or the long, 2 inch strips, most of the cutting is done for you. And a good, sharp rotary cutter & rulers - it goes pretty fast and helps you to be accurate!
I'm pretty sure that I speak for the Entire quilting community when I say we are AlWayZ so Happy when we gain another quilter... 😶❤️😊❤️🤗 Wishing you all the best. Would love to see the finished quilt.
Thank you, this tutorial was so informative. Yes please show the setting up or loading of the longarm. Your camera person knows how to get in there and show us the details and with such good lighting.
Hi Donna Love your tutorials but especially this one. I watched it again today while I’m working on a quilt… I love your border method. When I learned how to quilt in 2008 I was told that you measure the quilt top in three places and take an average of those measurements for your borders. Your method works perfectly and saves time 💙
I really like how u showed n explained by writing down on paper the quilt diagram for the borders n binding measurements. The only thing I found different was joining the binding strips w a straight seam rather than on the diagonal. Very good video n u r a great teacher.
I would love to know more about long arm quilting. I really love your quilting tutorials.. my husband tells people he goes to bed ever night with me and Donna Jordan. Haha. He wakes up and knows what a seam allowance and how to bind. X
Thank you! I was so excited to see this tutorial on finishing a quilt top. You are a blessing to all new quilters. I would love to see a video on the long arm.
Thank you again for your tutorial!! I watch all of them. I would be interested in seeing how thoset up the longarm too. I'm thinking asst some point I'd like to buy one so it would help me that way too!! Thanks Donna. One more thing, thanks to Matt for cutting pre-cuts! I really don't like using the pinked ones, and he has a great eye for choosing coordinating fabrics!!
I am a beginner and have watched several videos until I discovered yours... just so perfect, have it bookmarked to refer back to. Thank you from across the pond in England.
I am very pleased with the steps and helpful measurements and how you add the width and length of the fabric you need to finish the quilt live in eastern Oregon and I enjoy watching all your videos Thank you so much for refreshing my memories of the basic quilting techniques
Love how you make quilting look so easy and fun. I am fairly new to quilting but am having a blast learning all the techniques. This one definitely helped me learn how to do the binding. Thank you for sharing your quilting tips and tricks.😊
Thanks for such an interesting and helpful tutorial! Great to see the calculations made easy too. Wonderful, thanks for taking the time to share your quiltmaking with us
Donna, this tutorial was amazing and will definitely help me finish my projects with confidence and satisfaction. I love your tutorials and have referred to them over and over again. Thank you so very much!
I love your enthusiasm! Your videos inspire all quilters to be creative with quilting boarders . Thank you for being a great teacher:) ❤ I have always struggled with measurements.
You are incredible I didn’t quilt all the time but when I did I flow your instructions, I really don’t have the special machine only the small ones very older kenmore machine thank u!
I would also love to see the setting up of a long arm. I have a friend with a long arm but not computerized. You have to free motion quilt using her machine with the handles to move the machine across the quilt. It does about three sweeps then the bobbin has to be replaced. . Thank you for your videos. They are very helpful and give me loads of hints, especially colour choices that I perhaps would not have thought of before. Thank you too for the free patterns They are full of great ideas.
Thank you so much for this video! I’m fairly new to quilting and had lots of questions about how to calculate the backing as well as the best way to seam it if you have to! This was great! Love your teaching style and tutorials!
I would absolutely love to see the process of setting up the computer part of setting up the longarm machine. I love your very clear and precise way you have of showing us the steps of making quilts. Thank you for all you do. 💖
When I try to stitch in the ditch, I took your advice and stitched around the edges first. Every time I have done this I find that my backing bubbles up and I get HUGE wrinkles in the backing! Are there any recommendations??
Donna: That method of using the pin to push out the corner when you have too much on one side?? Genius!!! I struggled for years with the corners not matching. Quilting game changer for sure! Thank you so much!
Ms. Donna im going to learn how to quilt watching you. Im 65 and always wanted to learn how to quilt like the women of old no one in my family that i know of has ever done this so im going to learn from you and a few others but you are the one I actually learn from. Thank you so much. Darlene
super duper Iove your videos such patients and love for the art of quilting, I'm new at quilting, I have always had the love for fabrics, oh oh danger danger now I want to make a lot of quilts. God Bless you Donna Jordan.
That was a wonderful tutorial and perfect timing as I’m about to sew binding on today and have never done it on my own so I will be great to have this video beside my machine. Keep up the great teaching 👏

You always explain everything so well. It is kind of scary when you finish the top and then what. You helped relieve some of the fear.
I would love to see the whole process of doing the long arm from start to finish! That would be an awesome experience!
I thought I knew everything you were showing … until you got to the corner of the binding! Using the pin to pivot the back binding until it made a 45º corner was something I had never seen before. Thanks!
This video on borders and how to make them on a quilt is the best yet!
What kind of machine do you recommend for home use?
Thank you for this video. I am 77 years old and is just starting to make quilts and other things. I am so glad to see all your videos. They are great. Thank you.
My goodness. Thank you for this video. You are an amazing teacher.
I wanted to have a go at quilting, having very tiny amount of sewing knowledge, thought it would be really hard. But your tutorial really made me feel I can do this and get excited. I was very lucky to win a sewing machine recently and am learning how to use it, I've started with napkins to practice and now have the bug ~ quilting here I come
Happy for you! Have you made a quilt now?
If you use the precuts - 5" squares (charm packs) or the long, 2 inch strips, most of the cutting is done for you. And a good, sharp rotary cutter & rulers - it goes pretty fast and helps you to be accurate!
I'm pretty sure that I speak for the Entire quilting community when I say we are AlWayZ so Happy when we gain another quilter...
😶❤️😊❤️🤗
Wishing you all the best.
Would love to see the finished quilt.
I just love watching your instructions and the final effect. I check every day for the latest endeavor. Your just the best. Thanks for sharing.
Agreed! Love to check my Inbox every morning for Jordan Fabrics!!!
Thank you, this tutorial was so informative. Yes please show the setting up or loading of the longarm. Your camera person knows how to get in there and show us the details and with such good lighting.
Hi Donna
Love your tutorials but especially this one.
Thank you so much, Jordan family, for creating this video. I am in the planning stage of my first full sized quilt, so this helps me tremendously!
Wonderful, thanks for taking the time to share your quiltmaking with us
Thank you for inspiring us new quilters, with your help I can now move forward to finishing my first quilt🎉🤗
still learning...thanks so much! You're a good teacher and you don't overdo the explaining! Very clear, as well. Nice job!
I too would love to see more on how to set up the long arm, particularly starting, stopping and matching up. Love watching your tutorials Donna!
Donna, this tutorial was amazing and will definitely help me finish my projects with confidence and satisfaction. I love your tutorials and have referred to them over and over again.
Thank you so very much!
The borders idea is brilliant. It’s really going to make my quilt pop
I too love how you make the calculations simple-lots of rewatches but the lightbulb finally went on!!
I would love to see how to set up and use the long arm I think it is so cool
Very informative. I'm getting myself ready to see a quilt. A beginner quilt. Thanks so much.
So happy to have you back! I really liked the tutorial and I would love to see more about the long arm.

Donna: That method of using the pin to push out the corner when you have too much on one side?? Genius!!! I struggled for years with the corners not matching. Quilting game changer for sure! Thank you so much!
Thank you, you are the best teacher ever, now I can finish my quilt.
Ms. Donna im going to learn how to quilt watching you. Im 65 and always wanted to learn how to quilt like the women of old no one in my family that i know of has ever done this so im going to learn from you and a few others but you are the one I actually learn from. Thank you so much. Darlene
As someone working on her first quilt, this video was so helpful.
Wonderful video. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us 😘😘
I’m a long time quilter with a stack of pieced tops that might get finished now! Thank you so much for this great tutorial!!
This has been the absolute best video tutorial on how to finish a quilt I have seen. All steps explained perfectly and simply. Thank you.
super duper Iove your videos such patients and love for the art of quilting, I'm new at quilting, I have always had the love for fabrics, oh oh danger danger now I want to make a lot of quilts. God Bless you Donna Jordan.
I deeply appreciate all of the effort put into this for us! Wow! I just started crazy quilt squares and I'm so inspired!
Love your tutorials! I'd like to see how to set up and use the long arm.
That was a wonderful tutorial and perfect timing as I’m about to sew binding on today and have never done it on my own so I will be great to have this video beside my machine. Keep up the great teaching 👏
GREAT to have it all explained in one location, not hit and/or miss no clicking here and there or getting lost. Thank you.
Probably commented before but reviewing again as Donna always my go to for guidance. Thank you Jordon Fabrics
