No one ever really knows someone’s lot in life. If you have a moral dilemma about giving money, you can always buy them food, even fast food if you can. I have a really hard time seeing the homeless with pets, as I love, love, love animals. It’s especially hot here in the state where I live, so I’ll get a small bag of food for pets I see, and something for the owner to eat and water. Some people think it’s dumb what I do because they say I can’t save the world, but I can surely make a difference in the life of a person and an animal if even for one or two days. You did good giving that woman , and her child money . ❤🙏

I also had that aha moment. What I learned about myself, is to give from my heart, and not judge. Thanks for sharing your feelings.

Yes, giving from the heart. That is how I saw it too.

When I give I do it with the knowledge that it is a gift to them and their decision what to do with their gift.

Exactly, a gift with strings attached is not a gift. I’m on a lot of Facebook groups from my local neighborhood and there’s quite a few free item groups for giving away things for free. Some of them have all these strings attached like the person taking the free thing can’t resell it. I’ve given it. I don’t care what they do with it. It’s theirs to do with as they please. But, there is some women on these groups that search the sale groups and craigslist, to make sure their items isn’t showing up, that’s just crazy to me.

That is kind of what I was trying to say also.

I’m a Christian and I usually let the Holy Spirit prompt me give the person what they might need, money, food, clothes, school supplies for kids, etc.

Good for you. If I have money on me, which I don't always, I will give it to someone with an open heart. Many family members have chastised me for doing so. I choose to believe in the good that exists in people. I don't care what they do with the money; I don't debate whether they need it or not. I have been lucky for a great part of my life, not all of it, but most of it. And yes, I have worked hard but I have also been very lucky to have some incredible people in my life and had opportunities others haven't. Homelessness could be just 1 paycheck away or 1 mental illness away for so many. We as a nation have to have compassion and empathy.

I like how you said give "with an open heart." That resonates with me.

I don't give money to people who are panhandling. I don't trust anyone who does that. That's just me. Judgements aren't bad, in my opinion, when they help us move through the world safely, with integrity, and value.

Yes, people are always saying don’t judge, but judging keeps us safe in this world. You don’t open the door to strangers, you don’t answer the phone to a number you don’t know, you don’t get onto an elevator in a dark parking garage with a strange guy alone. You’re judging or are you just being careful. It’s like that story about if you’re out jogging on a remote trail and you’re confronted by either a bear or a man which do you choose you choose a bear, I would choose a panda bear myself.

I agree that there is a certain amount of judging (profiling) that does keep us safe. That was what I was referring to about not getting scammed, etc. I think for me it was about once I made the decision to give the money to just let it go at that point. Thanks, I love hearing others thoughts.

@LynsAlteredArts Exactly!! And I've done a lot of solo hiking and backpacking, and I would choose the man any day of the week. 🏕

I used to worry that my gift would be used on alcohol until I read a post where someone said “who cares if they buy alcohol, that’s the first thing I do when I get my wages!” And I realised, even if they were joking, that we all have the freedom of choice at the supermarket and no one cares if there’s a bottle of wine in with the organic avocados, so I no longer judge - in fact good luck to them if they’re going to get off their face on some substance if it relieves their misery for a short time.

Once there was a man standing near a freeway entrance holding a sign that read "I'm not going to lie, I need a beer ". I gave him a small amount of money because he was honest about it.

Sometimes I will give money to homeless people, but I try to do it so there are not other homeless people who can see me giving money.

Especially if they have a pet I would rather give food and water. I will go into a grocery store and have an interesting time trying to decide what they might need? This just seems more intentional to me.
