Thank you , Jo . This is regarding a backpack , and it's my very first leather project . I finished the backpack a couple days ago , and i am so happy with the way it came out . I didn't even know how to saddle stitch until I watched your instruction . I've been watching other channels for months but you're so clear and thorough about explaining everything , that you're easily my favorite channel now , and I wished I had found you from the start .
The customer would now like me to modify the backpack and add some padding to the shoulder straps , and I am so excited to use this video to make the padding . I've bought the same black foam , and I am ready to do this .

This was awsome. Have ordered neoprene, and am going to use the same for a horse's cavesson. Would you then recommend a more durable type os thin leather? Would love if you have a video on types of leathers for various uses! I will subscribe this very day. 😊
Hi +Linda Mellingen a thin cow hide would be more durable. In you are in the UK AA Crack do loads of amazing hides and have a huge range of colours to choose from. I think it's called baby buck nappa, I'm in the process of moving over to these hides as they are more cost effective also.

Hello +LOCO_UK you can get starter kits from a few places online like Artisan leather, Leather School and Bowstock. These vary in price and what's included in them. Heya, glad you like my videos 🙂 I use Bostik contact adhesive for all my glueing needs, it's great. It is used in shoe making so very strong.
Just ordered some foam from Abbey England, but they don't have much of it left and it seems to be impossible to find it anywhere else. I was looking at EVA foam, but this looks to be significantly stiffer. Also, shipping to the US is apparently calculated when it ships, so I ordered it today and I guess I get billed for an indeterminate amount in a few days. lol 😅😅

Hey, would you have a dring between the collar leather and the padding only? Or does it have to be in between thick leather, so it can last on a horses headcollar? Thanks a lot, very impressive work!
Hiya, yes you can do that, it would be worth putting the 2 wedges either side of it too so it doesn't create a bump on the padding side. I've done it that way for adding dee rings onto dog harnesses. Thanks Jo

Got a question. But first - just gotta thank you for sharing what you do, and for the great instruction. I wouldn't change a thing (except maybe some closer shots for the newbies, like me. That would be HUUUUGE! That's the only feedback I can think of). QUESTION: I notice you use a little set square quite a bit. How important or how useful would you say the set square is to making your projects? I keep thinking about getting one. Thanks. BTW, Congrats on your 10K!
Hey Mike, thank you for your feedback. This is an older video, I am trying to get more camera angles in my newer ones 👍 the set square I use was less than £5 so for that it's worth it, I use mine quite a bit for squaring ends and for marking out my stitching evenly on both sides on straps. Wow, thank you I was wondering how collars were padded. In another video loved how you shaped your collar with grooved pieces of wood. Also you do all the skiving with a knife, great. Can you reply with what type of plastic... padding you use. With your accent I couldn't make it out. As well as the brand cement you use. I am still looking for the perfect contact cement. Haven't found it. Do you ever sew your collars with a sewing machine or always by hand and why?
Hello, glad you are enjoying the videos :-) The foam I use for padding is 6mm plastazote and you can get it from Abbey England --> abbeyengland.com/Store/txtSearch/plastazote/ProductID/68899 (they do international shipping if you are outside the UK) or you can use neoprene foam.
The contact adhesive is by a company called Bostik, Its the shoe adhesive one (not sure on the number, I will have a look when I am back in the workshop tomorrow) When using contact adhesive you need to cover both surfaces and leave it to go sticky for the best results.
I always hand stitch my collar, double hand stitching (saddle stitch) is much stronger than stitches made on a sewing machine. This is because you make 2 individual stitches (one on the front and one on the back) with each stitch you make. With machine stitching this creates a chain stitch, so if one stitch becomes loose or rubs off overtime the whole thing can unstitch - if you get a loose thread on your clothes for example when you pull on the tread it gets longer and longer as it unstitched (hope that makes sense). Also a lot of the designs I do are quite detailed and small and the sewing machines I have are to big/bulky to stitch these collars on them.

Love this tutorial, just how long roughly did this take to make in real time? I am thinking using suede (1.5mm) as padding to get the collar and get some relief.
It depends on the length of the collar really but usually around an hour and a half

Hi +Shoty Pua I like to use an existing collar if available and measure to the most used hole or if it's a clip fitting measure the overall length including the clip and that should be the middle hole on the new one.
Just remember to add about 3/8"-1/2" if it's a Web one to allow for the added thickness of the leather or once you have cut your point and have the holes marked find something that is the size you need - I measure my leg and wrap the collar round to see how it fits... Very hitch of me :-)
When measuring with a tape measure around the dogs neck I add a couple inches to allow for leather thickness and room to put a couple of fingers between the collar and the dogs neck. If you can using an original collar is the most accurate as you know how the owner likes the collar to fit.

Hello...I’ll soon be building myself a leather belt, but wanted to live it with suede. Would you recommend turning the edges of the suede liner under to get a “finished” edge on the suede? Or would you just cut off the excess and have an unfinished edge on your suede liner? I’m not sure which way to go on this. Thanks for any advice...
Hi Jay, I'd do a test of both options to see which one you like best. The cut edges would probably be a bit easier but definitely do a sample first. Let me know how you get on. Jo

+Stephanie McCurley my dog collars are made with 3.5-4mm veg bridle butt and comes finished so I only stain the edges as shown in the video. My padding leather is clothing nappa about 0.6-0.8mm and comes in loads of colour options. Abbey England are a good place for tools and they ship overseas. In the next video I shall add some more annotations for the materials used, ect. Thanks for the feedback always good to get input from people who watch my videos 😁

Hey Tracey, I use 3.5-4mm veg tan bridle butt for all my collars and leads. You can also use a thick shoulder 3-3.5mm would be fine.

Hi I was wondering if you are heating the creasing iron with the electric element or was that just a convenient place to rest the tool?
Hi Ian, yes I heat up the crease as it makes a more permanent crease line than if done cold.
How hot do you get it? just warm to the touch or very hot?
You want it hot enough to do a perminant line, if it's too hot it will burn the leather. I have scrap pieces of leather next to it for testing when I've left it on for too long. Once you've done it a few times you'll get to know how long to leave it on for.
How do you know what length to make per dog? What’s a good base of measurements you use?
Hi +mskelly3 all my orders are custom ordered and the customer supplies the measurements. You can have a look online for average measurements which should be a good indicator for you.
Can reflective ribbon be used on this style of collar? If so, would a leather lining be needed on the backside, so the reflective ribbon

How can I find the “set square” that you use to square the collar loop? You called it something else in another video and I couldn’t find that either.

I bought all these leather working supplies and two hides, but I keep hesitating to do anything with them because I'm so scared of screwing them up since you can't fix them once holes are punched and cuts are made. Any suggestions for how to get past this silly anxiety? I have all these ideas on what I want to make, and feel dumb for not just jumping in and trying it.
Hi +Nicole Tarbuck, it's hard sometimes to take the plunge! I'd suggest on starting on something simple like a plain belt or a dog collar and work up from there. Also measure twice and cut once! Doesn't matter how long it takes you to make your first items, take time to measure everything and get it marked out first. Hope this helps

You don't have to worry, you can't imagine how ugly were the first leather craft I did. Screwing projects is just the way to learn.
if they are nice hides, i would say trawl ebay or the local leather shop (if you are so lucky as to have one nearby) for some reject quality hides for cheap to practice on, or even a remnant grab bag. use that to get a feel for the tools and build confidence, then dive in.

The padding leather I use is a nappa hide so very think, about 0.8mm. I am currently using babybuck nappa from AA Crack. But any soft panel hide should be fine. Jo

Hey John, you don't stitch mark the padding. Using an awl you awl through the marks on the front of the collar though the padding.

J.H.Leather I use veggie tanned to make holsters (there's some on my channel) but sometimes it seems to dry out exceptionally fast, especially on the belts and straps.
+EitriBrokkr have you tried an natural leather feed? The Sedgwick's one is very good and made up of the natural oils lost during the tanning process. The leather I get is usually just finished - especially when order from Metropolitan Leather as they create my custom colours to order and they will feed the leather with tallow.

Hello, the padding is plastazote that I get from Abbey England. I did a quick Google and found this information about:
"Plastazote foam is a closed cell polyethylene foam blown with nitrogen. In contrast to other foams, it is tough and flexible, defined by the regular shapes, sides and walls of the cells made from polyethylene. If Plastazote foam is squashed and compressed, each nitrogen filled cell acts like a balloon and the foam bounces back to its original shape."
Hope that helps, I use a 6mm thickness for all my padding.

Hello +Squeeker Mouse, I am using plastazote foam and sheep nappa for the leather padding. You can use neoprene and other foams also. And for the leather padding you want a nice thin hide 0.8 ish mm thick so a nice clothing hide is good for this, you can go slightly thicker to about 1.2mm if needs be. Hope this helps, Jo

There is no pattern for this as each collar is different. If you watch the video all is explained for you to make your own.

Too much wasted leather.... you cut off twice the leather you needed. More $ if you are cost concious...
With a bridle butt you need to cut full strips of leather off of it else you will waste a lot of the hide. The excess leather can be used to make another order at a later date and the way I charge for the collars the whole strip of leather is paid for so there is no wasted money.
What the hell. it's called a D ring not a dog D! You get D rings for cats collars too! They're also not just used for dog collars.
+Leahbae Xxx in the UK its a way of differentiating between dee rings as you get so many, saddle dee, harness dee, cast dee, dog dee, ect.
