I love this thank you ! I metal work and want to make a few collars with turquoise around it.. I'm not sure how to do that just yet but I'll look at your website or Tandy or if you know how I can put sterling with rivets somehow. If you have a video please share ! Thanks.
Thank you so much for your willingness to share your techniques. What type of lining leather do you use? What type of lining leather do you recommend for horse tack? I would like to line a bridle and breast collar with this technique but want a leather that will hold up to the sweat.
At the start of what your making and accessories used could you please also write down what tools were used in making each collar and type of leather and thickness of each collar. Where you got your studs from etc. All this would be even more helpful for ppl just starting out.
I just found your videos. This is the second one I’ve watched and it is fascinating to see how easy you make it to be. I’m going to try it. Just a question, what is the thickness of the leather you use? Is it a 12-13oz?
Thank you 🙂 it's great to hear that my videos are helping you 🙂 I use a foam called plastazote, if you have a Google you should be able to find some or I get mine from Abbey England. Or yes you can use neoprene, I like 6mm thickness for my padding foam. Jo
Your Awl work always fascinates me, though I would prefer to see it real time rather than speeded up so I can learn more from it ;o) I have started some leatherwork, mostly in the Re-Enactment area as a hobby, though I am looking to perhaps go self employed and full time... I have watched your tool video on how to prepare an awl, but have yet to implement that on my own tools... I presume that was a Diamond Awl you were using, though it was so slim it looked like it was just a thin round one... if I may ask, how long did it take you to learn to use the Awl to the point that you don't mark stitch spacing or even use a Stitch Punch on the work?
Heya, I've been doing leather work for almost 11 years and from the start used an awl over punching the stitch marker all the way through. The more you use an awl the easier it all gets. I use a diamond awl blade but you need to shape it so it fits through your stitch marks and isn't too big or your stitching will look a bit odd and not as good as it could be. I have a stitching video on here were it's in real time - I will be making another one soon now I'm better with the camera 😂 which may help you, its all about repetition really. Jo
I may have missed it in the comments I was wondering the stud used are they the pointed prong studs from abbey England or were they sourced somewhere else. Thanks
I got mine from Etsy I think, if you google leather stud decorations or leather conical studs (or other shape you may want) you should be able to find some
I see now! The piping is sandwiched between the collar leather and a padded lining! Great video. I do have one question... Is the ends of the padding leather not stitched?
No, you don't want to stitch across a strap as this will weaken the leather, if you want you can leave the ends of the padding long and then fold them back over on themselves.

You're so fun to watch and listen to, Jo. 👍💯 Great work as always.
Thank you 🙂

Hi there, I use babybuck nappa from A&A Crack for my padding leather, this is suitable for horses too. 🙂
@@JHLeather Thank you. I will try to find some similar calf in the US. That looks like a great leather supplier. Wish we had a similar one.
For breast plates I would use Bridle leather or Herman Oak.
You cant go past herman oak
Thanks for uploading the vedio
I will try and used collers for street dogs.

That's a wonderful thing to do 👍

Beautiful work and a pleasure to watch. Thanks for taking the time to show us how you make your projects.
Keep up the good work!
Thank you 🙂
Straight up, I'm willing to bet most people are watching this to learn how to make male harnesses. But good tutorial.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 The skills are transferable 👍
factsss💅
Love your videos - can I ask, your #7 stitch marker... does that translate to about 5mm spacing? I'm having trouble finding a conversion.
I think it's about 3.85mm

It's 3.5-4mm bridle butt, I think that translates to 9-10 oz 👍
Spectacle! Piece of art ! Where can I see your collars cause actually I’m looking for a spiked collar for my dog. Congratulations !
Heya, if you email me on info@jhleather.co.uk I can send some photos, the collars are not listed on my website anymore
Thanks to your films, I've motivated myself to make leather goods, you're great :D
If I can ask, what do you use for the padding? Neoprene foam?

I would heartily recommend to you “The Art of Hand Sewing Leather “ by the great Al Stohlman
Have to agree. Needs to be slowed down especially for beginners who need it to be the slower the better step by step

@@JHLeather thank you for replying
No worries 👍
You may have already covered this. I really like the shape and size of the knife you use. Where would I find one?
HI John, it's a single head knife. This one I got custom made but you can get a similar one from George Barnsley and Sons. Jo
Is there a specific type of leatger you are using to wrap around the padding?
I use 0.8mm chrome tanned nappa leather
I see now! The piping is sandwiched between the collar leather and a padded lining! Great video. I do have one question... Is the ends of the padding leather not stitched?

hello ... how do you paint the collar edges?
Very nice
Thank you 🙂
Hi Jo - what glue were you using (love the pot too)
Hey Dave, I use bostik 6092 contact adhesive and the pot is from Abbey England
J.H.Leather - thanks Jo x
can you please share your AWL model ? and is it for sale somewhere? thanks
I got it from a company called Laederiet in Denmark www.laederiet.dk
what kind of foam do you use for padding?
I use 6mm Plastazote for the padding, you can also use neoprene.
What kind of tape did you use for the piping?
Reflective tape 👍
Don’t you have to let the Contact Cement set up for 10-15 minutes before pressing pieces together for a permanent bond…?
Очень нравится ваша работа. Отдыхаю смотря. UA 💛💙.
Thank you 🙂
Awesome!

Yeah, Skylar is always on the scrounge for treats 😂
I know you're not staining it with mayonnaise... ;) What do you use?
