I like to watch videos like these because it reminds me why things are priced the way they are when they’re hand made. It takes so long and so much knowledge and patience. Any time I find myself thinking “that’s expensive” I search for a video of how it’s made to kind of shame myself out of thinking that way.
I got into leather work purely by accident. I had a dog that was so big i couldn't buy a collar big enough. So made my own all hand stitched. It was truly a labour of love . Since then I've been making leather products for people.
Always thrilled to find a new video from you. Your attention to details in your craft and the photography make your work stand above the others. Thanks again and again.
I did enjoy your video, thank you. Now I think I will have a go at hand stitching, I'm sewing machine man but have fancied having go at hand sewing, and this morning I was asked if I could make a large dog collar, so thank you. Regards from Scotland
Thank you so much for sharing your videos, I find them really helpful and easy to follow. Can you please tell me what width strap you're using on this specific collar? Cheers From New Zealand
Thanks for this tutorial - it's clear, concise, and easy to search. I also enjoy your voice. Excuse me if this a tangential question. You do not stitch the edge of the collar and I'd like to know Does edge stitching on collars or belts have a function beyond decoration?
Unless you are stitching 2 thicknesses of leather together, then stitching all the way around is just for decoration. One thing to note that on a collar or belt if you are stitching all the way around, unless there is a filler that the buckle sits up and away from the stitches, the buckle will rub and eventually damage the stitches. 👍
I am even just amazed with your saddle stitching. If I use just pricking irons and don't go all the way through both pieces, my diamond awl comes out where I don't want it and my stich lines look like garbage on one side. Bravo!
The best way to achieve that is a sharp awl, the easier it is to awl through the leather the easier it is to get your stitching straight. Also lots and lots and lots of practice. If it helps you can use your dividers to draw a line on the other side of your turn so you have a guide to follow. Hope that helps 🙂
Hi Jo I’ve just made this and wondered what sort of tacks / length you use when tacking your wedges and loop in? I did get some from abbey but they weren’t quite long enough
Just found your channel and found it very informative and instructive. I am new to leathercraft and havent seen what you called creasing. Do you have a video that demonstrates this more and describes the tool.
Hello, Have you considered a kit. I make the odd bits and bobs in leather but would be happy to buy the leather strip and fittings as a kit . Thank you
Hi dear can you please show any method of making & cutting long leather dog leash as long as possible like 12ft & 15ft and you suggest any special tool or method do it's very useful to make my own dog long leash
Hello you can splice thee leather together. So you'd have a 3" overlap of each piece and then skive the ends of each evenly. That would be the best way to do it.
Heya Doug, you can use a centre bar buckle if you like, I am just used to using these types of buckles with a leather loop and as a personal preference I prefer this style.
Yes I do, they are finishing at the end of this month (as it get's too cold in my workshop) and will restart again in April 2024, you can find out more here: www.jhleather.co.uk/collections/leatherwork-courses
WOW! You're incredibly fast at saddle stitching! I'm very impressed. I'm making a collar for some friends pooch and I'm wondering when you crease along the edges are you heating up your edge creaser with something like an alcohol burner? Love the use of those little wedges at the D ring too.
Thank you 🙂 yes you can use an alcohol burner to heat your crease up, make you to have some scrap leather to do a quick test on to make sure it isn't to hot.
Lovely to watch an artisan at work. I would be interested to know what make awl and needles you use. I bought a Tandy awl and it just bends quite disappointed, also your hole punch, I’ve bought and buckled two of these now, so just use hammer punches. Finding good quality tools is a challenge. Thanks 😊
Hey Pete, I use an awl blade and handle from Laederiet in Denmark. You need to make sure you sharpen your awl so that it goes through the leather nicely, forcing an awl that's not sharp can cause them to bend. The hole punch I got has a lever action to help it punch the holes, I got it about 12 years ago and am not sure where I got it from. I'm not sure where you are based but the is a listing for one on ebay USA: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VBW-356-005-Lever-Action-Revolving-Leather-Hole-Punch-Pliers-Made-in-Germany/372794498256?epid=19018486167&hash=item56cc489cd0:g:WgoAAOSwYqVcictZ
J.H.Leather Thank you so much for your swift reply. I’ll take a look to see if I can find one. Self teaching via tutorials so much appreciate your work. Thanks again, Pete, Galloway Scotland 🏴 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you for the video. I'm very new to art of leather crafting and based in South Africa. Here we have a very limited access to tools. Can you maybe advise me where I can buy the edge bevelers that you have used in this video for leather that 2 to 2.5 mm thick.
I would add some acrylic resolene to the edges of the collar and other than that its a case of using a quality leather balm to help put back in oils lost over time.
Hi Carson. As the leather I purchase is finished at the tannery there is some amount of waterproofing, I will add some acrylic resolene to the edges to help protect them but there isn't a way to make leather 100% waterproof. I get all my fittings from Abbey England 👍
It depends on where you are based. In the UK I use Abbey England, Metropolitan Leather, A&A Crack to name a few. In the US, Weaver Leather Supply and Tandy Leather craft are the 2 that I know of.
Hello, I buy most my tools from Abbey England. There is also Metropolitan Leather that sells tools, George Barnsley and sons and H Webber and sons. Hope that helps, Jo
I've used those suppliers, and they're all good. There is also Identity Leathercraft in Matlock; Leather4craft; and Artisan Leather. George Barnsley & Sons is a traditional Sheffield tool maker; their tools are well made and reasonably priced for the quality you get
We can only use his collar for i.d. he wears a harness for walking. Being a pug a collar will choke him. Oh the life of owning a walking egg! Good work btw as always.

BEST leather working videos I've found! So detailed & specific in the explanations!
Thank you 🙂
Thanks for sharing ! You’re so skilful! We do not have anyone so skilful with leather in my country - am quite sure of this. Great video!
Thank you very much! 😊
You make this look so much easier than it is for me, the benefit of quality tools and leather and a lot of practice.

I Love your videos! As a dog owner I have a question :) Are you maybe thinking of adding a "Dog Collar" Kit to the "Be the maker" line of products?
This was very insightful and well laid out. Thank you
Glad you liked it 👍

Subbed just for that sweet end cutting method. i have never seen someone cut like that before, your sharpening skills must be next level. cheers 👍
Thank you ☺️ lots of practice and free hand cutting points is easy 👌

Suggestion: insert the names of tools we need.
In particular, the wedge that squares the loop for the end tuck-in.
Love this cool colour too

Very new to the hobby, was just wondering what you used to hold the collar while you were saddle stitiching?
Love your skills!

Thanks for the close-up shots around the buckle area. Very helpful! I think your use of wedges makes the collar look really good.

I've been wondering about your lead block - evidently a versatile bit of kit...
Yeah it's a handy tool to have around 🙂
Nice Dog collar. I have a question. Why not use a center bar buckle instead of making a loop keeper?
Heya Doug, you can use a centre bar buckle if you like, I am just used to using these types of buckles with a leather loop and as a personal preference I prefer this style.
Do you have any recommendations on where to buy leather for this? Thank you !
Really liked and love the way you explain , thank you !! Very helpful
What is the little seed looking thing you’re using at the end after touching up the edges of the collar?
And how do we know long to cut it (my dog has a 19” neck roughly)?
Hello.
Super travail !!!
Bravo.
Pourrais tu me donner la référence exact de ton couteau ?
Merci beaucoup !!

How thick is the leather you used for this collar if you don't mind me asking?
It's 3.5-4mm vegetable tanned bridle butt 👍

where is the best place to purchase leather like this, I would like to give this a go?
What size of crew punch are you using?
It depends on the buckle i am using and what size collar I am making.
What kind of leather treatment do you use to protect the collar from water?
I would add some acrylic resolene to the edges of the collar and other than that its a case of using a quality leather balm to help put back in oils lost over time.
After watching this video, I'll leave it to the professionals
Beautiful
My thumbs are aching just from watching the stitching
Buckle size and d ring size please ???
It depends on the width of leather you are using for example if you are using a 1" strap of leather your buckle and dee ring will also need to be 1".
do you treat the leather so its water proof? also, where do you source your buckles?
Hi Carson. As the leather I purchase is finished at the tannery there is some amount of waterproofing, I will add some acrylic resolene to the edges to help protect them but there isn't a way to make leather 100% waterproof.
I get all my fittings from Abbey England 👍
