If they say it’s bad, then it’s not. That’s the law of MTGGoldfish.
True
They were adamant that no one would ever play the One Ring, since it cost 4 whole mana. This card likely is pretty good since it costs half the mana of goyf and in some late game scenarios you can bring it back. I also can imagine decks that want this effect going to goyf also so it's not like goyf or this it could be both.
It's not good.
For real tho 😂 almost always take their takes as the opposite
Unless Seth is wearing the hat, then it's the Outlaw of Mtggoldfish
Saving this for when Nethergoyf stomps the next Modern Pro Tour
lol, it does literally nothing in Modern. You're already dead turn 3, if not then turn 4, and that's WITH disruption as a given and you're going to win by attacking into tokens? Okay...
Modern aside, Tomer is going to play Winter Moon and ruin Seth's life on Commander Clash. Richard may escape only because they banned his worst offenders for this season.
Would love an episode seeing how many times they underestimated a card during spoiler season or overestimated. Richards take on Newgoyph is ridiculous
They do this every year with their Year in Review episode, where they look back at their best and worst takes from the previous year.
Spoiler: Richard's takes are always ridiculous, watch any of the other guy's facial expressions during these videos.
I remember when Uro was spoiled that Crim said something like "But we already have Growth Spiral, do we have room for Uro?"
Eh, true except Crims take on nethergoyf is even worse "if this checked both graveyards maybe it would be playable" is an insane sentence.
4/5 onedrops without haste or evasion are unplayable now, appearently.
Guys, you labeled the LOTR set as a commander set and unplayable in Modern.
Richard is both right and wrong about goyf. It's probably unplayable in traditional jund decks. This new goyf you gotta build around it more but if you do, it's great. But the thing is, Tarmogoyf still has power if they exile your graveyard. Like if your opponent has delirium and your grave is gone, Goyf is still a 4/5. That's kind of important.
New goyf is gonna be 0 power a lot when the grave hate comes in.
Richard doesn't seem to realize how much of a big deal costing ONE MANA is for the new Goyf. And he also grossly overestimates the deckbuilding cost of having to fill up your graveyard with different card types, especially in a black deck.
Making this a 3/4 on turn 2 is really easy for any B/x deck worth its salt. Unlike OG Goyf, this will already be ATTACKING on turn 2, which is a huge deal in a fast format such as Modern. If it dies to a turn 1 Bolt, so what? One mana spell for one mana spell, 1-for-1, even trade. And yes, escaping it requires you to shrink your graveyard which seems to be counterintuitive, but you'll only be escaping this thing in the late game when there's probably WAY more cards in your graveyard (multiple fetchlands, useless cards cycled away with Fable, evoked elementals and so on), so paying the escape cost while keeping at least 3 cards of different types in your GY won't be that hard to do.
Oh, and worth mentioning you don't need 4 cards of different types, you need *any number of cards with 4 different types*. So stuff like Urza's Saga or Haywire Mite counts for 2. That matters.
Thinking this is unplayable because it dies to bolt and requires a little bit of smart deckbuilding is insane.
It doesnt even Fetch>Thoughtsieze into Tarmo turn 2 has always been junds play for 3/4, except with this importantly you get to hold up Bolt or Push for that additional boost to 3/4, because you leave an extra mana open here.
DRC clears new goyf though. Easily. Maybe as DRC #5, but I don't see it past that
@@michaellooks8397 A nether goyf with delirium is a 5/6, it's a decent chunk of change bigger than a DRC and isnt forced to attack if you dont want it to.
If nethergoyf was unconditionally a 1 mana 5/6 itd be probably the best creature in modern, thats a 4 turn clock for 1 mana.
If DRC was that generically good in the types of decks that midrangy piles want to play itd be played, the issue is if i want that type of value semi-aggressive 1 drop slot i could just play Ignoble or Ragavan which are better in those types of decks. (Talking about Jund)
"Dies to bolt" seems like a weird argument for a 1-drop. Any 1-drop at all dies to Fatal Push. If you're trading a single one-mana card for a single one-mana card that's parity to me.
@@51gunner Not to mention every relevant 1-drop in Modern history dies to Bolt. Ragavan, DRC, Nacatl, Esper Sentinel, DRS, Delver, Swiftspear (Prowess triggers aside), Goblin Guide, Asmo, Grazer, Zabaz, any mana dork, you name it. Sure, some of these creatures are value engines so their stats don't matter much, but even the ones that serve only as beatsticks never go past 3 toughness unless you jump through some considerable hoops (e.g. getting your life total below 10 for a Death's Shadow). Nethergoyf gets to >3 toughness easier and quicker than any of them.
Richard forgetting the most important part 1
Blue creatures in modern... spirits? fairies?
Guys, cmon, Merfolk is literally a strong tier2 deck right now that is going to love this effect
Yep, they are not thinking about how Tier 2 decks are getting a massive bump with these cards. Obviously sacrificing your Murktide to a Flare of Denial is stupid.
Flare of Denial doesn't work in Creativity. The only nontoken creatures they play are (usually non-blue) heavy hitters that they don't want to sacrifice.
It works In merfolk.
@atk9989 It could work, but is it better than Force of Negation? I think it's competing for those deck slots, and my gut tells me a card in hand is generally a lower cost than a creature already on the battlefield.
Flare of denial seems good in merfolk.
It has niche good decks but its definitely not a jam into anything. That's good design imo.
I'll be testing it out in my 5C combo deck. There are Blue creatures that I can run in it to effectively get a "free" counterspell to protect the combo. It should work nicely. I also definitely see Merfolk being able to use this.
Urzas Cave being seen as a turbo Commander Staple by the Clash Crew is proof they play a different game than many, many Commander players haha.
I think every single person I’ve talked to about this card has said its going to be nuts in commander
@@zacharyenglish2904 I'm sure it will be strong in the highest levels of Commander. Snag a Cradle. Glacial Chasm or Field of the Dead. But in the average Commander player's deck, it's a 4 mana Crop Rotation that gets like... Rogues Passage or a Triome.
@@TheSpunYarn "highest levels" is not anywhere near where they play at.
but I agree that card is super overblown outside at least high power or people who want to assemble tron in commander.
if you're a temple player though maybe you'll want It for that at the 3-5 range?
@wesleywyndam-pryce5305 they certainly don't! Clash is just unhealthily obsessed with utility lands. I should have been more specific: cedh might get use of this to get Cradle in a way that's hard to interact with - even if Green sucks in cedh that may be worth something. In high power edh, it also has potential but isn't the bombshell many are claiming. We agree!
I love Richard's personality and how interacts with the other hosts, but I swear I cannot understand how he evaluates cards for the life of me. I think Nethergoyf in the proper shell HAS to be good. I mean, even if it isn't as big as traditional Tarmogoyf, it is literally half the cost, and the cost of inclusion in the deck is so much lower.
It's also in black, so evaluating it in the context of Jund is just so nonsensical to me.
"Maybe if you play a graveyard deck..." like yeah Richard that's generally the idea.
Nah Nethergoyf is genuinely just worthless.
i mean, richard isn't a reliable source for accurate card evaluation, never has been
I think he, as the owner, tries to be contrarian on purpose to facilitate a debate. So the whole podcast isn't just them agreeing.
Otherwise....
I think Richard doesn't trust the Commander format to adapt. The whole reason we're in this ramp mess is because people realized that other forms of ramp were too easily hated on and Wizard printed a bunch of powerful GX value engines. If people keep losing because their 5c mana bases get hated on, they'll just place less 5c mana bases.
They said it best in a previous video: commander players are too soft lol.
This "fog/ramp meta" is created by the lack of interaction and combo-hate the community has. When wincons are more diverse, you eliminate the fact that green is overpowered. This meta was created because the consensus goal in casual commander is to "do the thing" and basically goldfish your deck. Once people interact with each other, this is no longer true.
How do you keep green from being overpowered? You play better wincons? How do you beat fast wincons? With interaction.
@@commanderpower99 yeah nah. While most players don't run enough interaction, when over half your deck needs to be interaction or you need to include mld to play every 2 turns, something is seriously wrong with the balancing.
I run a lot of interaction and a very diverse set of wincons, but I could use all my interaction on the green player and it wouldn't slow them down in the least and mld only hurts the non-green players.
When something like Opp Agent becomes mandatory just to slow down ramp(cause it doesn't even fully stop ramp) there is a problem.
@@casteanpreswyn7528 The problem of rule zero being the ruling law of the format...
Something about Seth’s voice, inflections, and inquisitive nature that’s refreshing and enjoyable to listen to! Bring back the cowboy hat my friend! 🤠
Wight of the reliquary works well with lands like khalani garden or lands that can make a spare body and searches silver bullet lands or utility lands like bajuka bog or vesuva.
Or with something like bitter blossom or cheap creatures with death triggers.
Richard is WILD for thinking Necrogoyf is bad. in my golgari , midrange deck boost of the typing is in my graveyard, we got witherbloom, baubles, thoughtseize, urza saga, removal, its really not hard to fill the graveyard. And I think they are on the idea of one goyf a turn but you can double cast necrogoyf so easily and put a ton of pressure down.
Jund needs to adapt. This will grow when you add bauble, Wrenn & fable.
I think people are vastly underestimating how strong a 1 drop goyf is
even if it only counts your grave, most games it's gonna be at *least* a 1 mana 2/3 by turn 2 for the decks that should be running it.
and sure that's in Bolt Range, but it has Escape, it WANTS to trade with their removal!
100% necrogoyf is hotdog water.
Problem is card like sanctify en vec, Dauthi Void, leyline of the Void and Endurance, all of these popular card hoses the card. As it only affect your grave
Tarmogoryfl include opponent graveyard, which is better
For Ugin's Labrynth, prototype seems the best fit. There's also Emerge, but none of those cards look all that playable. Scion of Draco might be good with it though, and there might be some janky builds with Bosh Iron Golem (DO IT SETH YOU WONT)
bosh in modern? I'd cream myself
For Flare of Denial: I don't know yet if Flare will see play in the Goryo's Vengeance deck, or if deck's will alter to fit it better, but Fallaji Archaeologist sees Modern play currently, which is basically the blue stitcher's supplier Richard says it needs at 25:45. Pair that with Snapcaster maybe and that's a potentially fine core of creature to play with it. Perhaps with the Outlaws Satoru, which has synergies with the ephemerate playstyle usually paired with the Archaeologist.
Yeah Fallaji Archaeologist, Augur of Bolas, and Watcher for Tomorrow seem like the most obvious creatures you can just drop for value on turn 2 and then sac to Flare of Denial whenever you need to.
yeah my problem is just is a sometimes free counterspell better than counterspell? or force of negation? like i feel like its something ppl would try for a hot sec then forget abt it tbh.
@@RedPandaStan I don't think it replaces counterspell in the decks running counterspell. But in the deck running Archaeologist and counterspell, it presents a really nice opportunity for them to tap out of counterspell to play archaeologist, milling and progressing the gameplan while still holding up interaction.
Existing mono g tron doesn't have a lot of room for ugin's labyrinth. Colorless tron does though. Tron lands take up 12 land slots. In a colored tron deck that makes colored slots a premium.
I'm thinking about a blue eldrazi deck. 4 ugins, 4 eldrazi temple, 12 blue sources with a couple utility lands. Blue tron struggles with any card that needs more then one blue pip, but with 12 blue sources that could be better.
Leyline 5c tron with only urza lands?
or like that navigators bauble that turns your land into the chosen basic when you tap it for some kind of tron affinity?
I don't play modern.
Bro new goyf is good
I don't mind Comic Sans, but the weird capitalization fries my brain.
Concerning Nethergoyf, how could they not mention Grief? Fetch, Bauble, Grief, and it's literally a 3/4. Turn two gets even bigger. Not every opener will be like that, but it deserves a test if nothing else. Richard just speaks in absolutes too often.
Or you could just Not Dead a Grief, take two cards from your opponent's hand, and have a 4/3 Menace on board instead.
@@Xoulrath_ Possible to build both lines into the deck, I think. The Goyf could always be the exiled card if it shows up early, or if your Grief is removed you've got land and instant and creature in bin and your Goyf is a 3/4 that stands to get even bigger from a Thoughtseize or Bauble if you want either.
I doubt anyone's just binning Planeswalkers, Battles, or Tribal cards just to grow the Goyf, but a likely 3/4 that could go as high as a 5/6 without much work? For 1? I feel like that's beefy enough to see some play.
@@51gunner Maybe. I don't think that it's a bad card. I just don't think that it's this broken card that will be the Savior of OG Jund. Nor do I expect it to be the star of its own archetype like Delver used to be.
Turn 1 Fetchland/Mishra's Baubble/Street Wraith to make Nethergoyf a 3/4 without losing card advantage, and survives Lightning Bolt no matter what. Not to mention you can followup with Thoughtseize and Lightning Bolt on T2, or a Grisly Salvage, to make it a 5/6 and attack with it. You can easily make a deck around this and Tarmogoyf/Bloodghast/Vengevine in Jund colors.
Also the lesson learn mechanic leads to mascot exhibition for the new sol land
For Ugin's Labyrinth, how many 7+ CMC colorless cards are you running? Might be worth in Affinity (especially with the new Myr Enforcer), but in Tron it seems bad.
It feels like it's been years since Richard was so worked up in a game, video, or podcast. Thank you Tarmogoyf!
If the Red free spell deals damage to a player, then I think it'll be really playable. In Burn, once your small creatures become useless later in the game, they could be sac'ed to get over the finish line.
I'll gladly toss a goblin guide to deal 3+ damage for free. That shit could win games and as a burn player, I hope that's what it is
Wight of the Reliquary will probably see play in legacy, in Fiend Artisan Elves decks. The deck now has a creature tutor to get anything you need and land tutor to find anything you need.
how hard is it to build around winter moon? tomer all basics decks
How about omen hawker and the tap/untap combo with Agatha's soul cauldron as a deck that could definitely use the flare of denial?
RE: Ugin's Labyrinth - If you return the exiled card to hand does Ugin's Labyrinth 'return' to producing a single mana? The card reads, "if a card is exiled with" and the card is no longer exiled then it would only produce a single mana, correct?
Thanks and please be kind if I'm incorrect.
That's correct
I can't wait for double Moon. Winter Moon followed up by Blood Moon. Not only you can untap 1 nonbasic land but every nonbasic is a Mountain as well. Good luck getting through that.
I think winter moon is good for commander. There needs to be a downside for playing 5 colours. 👀 for modern i have no idea and don't really see why its there....
I wonder if the combination of Nulldrifter with the back half of Kozilek's Return will be usable in Modern.
I had to restrain myself several times during this video and need to remember that modern isn’t MTG goldfish’s focus
Fun fact regarding the Wight of the Reliquary discussion; Phyrexian Tower has been revealed as being in MH3 :D
woah, Ugin's Sanctum is so cool. I can put my Platinum Angel under it to protect it from wheels and exile effects till I can cast it!
Ugin's Sanctum + Platinum Angel + Temple of the False God = Meta!
Does 30 lands seem too little? I’m usually playing around 37 mana sources but I play 4-5 0 cost mana sources and 4-5 1 or 2 cost mana rocks. We proxy and play modo so price isn’t a big issue. When we play low power we house rule turns 1-3 as 1min or less and try to play on your turn and no rocks
That’ll only work well if you have a very low average cmc for your deck, or a lot of cantrips/filtering. A more regular deck will want around 50 sources/ramp at cmc 2 or less.
An easy check is to goldfish your opening hands. If you have to mulligan more than about 1 in 3 because of mana sources you need to add more.
is there enough urza lands to run a urza land only modern deck now?
You're so right that fair cards don't drive sales. They can't be too careful without these sets being seen as a flop.
Seth desperately trying to bat for Necrogoyf when it's a worse DRC is the funniest thing this week
I thought corgis were bred to herd cows because they are short enough to dodge the cow kicks
Wight sacrificing your Marit Lage when it’s being targeted for removal to get another Dark Depths? Or a Legacy Field of the Dead deck to make zombies to sac for more fields?
Corgis are breed of dog to Shepard around cows. They are so low to the ground to avoid getting kicked by a cow or horse.
These guys really can't imagine actually playing enough basics to break the symmetry of Winter Moon lol
Delirium makes nethergoyf a one drop 4/5 that can be escaped for 3 mana. The escape exile can be paid simply with urza's saga into bauble plus any other card type (usually instant or sorcery). Also, it can survive bolt on one with bauble and street wraith or a pitch spell like grief. Also, if it dies to bolt or push you are still ahead because of escape.
I think it's important to note that Ugin's Labyrinth only taps for 2 when a card is exiled by it so once you return the card it's just a generic tap for 1
I love the Comic Sans SL and stand by the fact that if they just released the art as a normal drop nobody would have even paid it any attention.
There were some leaks that they didn't share, but I suspect at least one of them was because it was the Professor's preview card.
Ugin’s lab can imprint scion. Kind of the nuts but if you have leyline, 2 scions and lab in hand then you can turn 1 a scion.
Nethergoyf could be the card that dredge decks desperately need since Hogaak left. A one-mana potential beater is exactly what the deck needed and it fits the deck perfectly with its escape. Wight of the Reliquary can get Cabal Coffers and/or Urborg.
Think corgis are a hunting dog used to go into burrows while hunting. So you could argue herding in that they chase animals in a direction different to them.
Oh oh!!! Idea for legacy! Sac outlet, chthonian nightmare and veteran explorer: sac vet, search 2 land, play nightmare, reanimate vet, repeat until all lands in deck on battlefield and huge amount of energy
Hold up, narcomoeba prized amalgum to sac to flare of denial…not sure how worth that is for a dredge deck but maybe to prevent sideboard answers from sticking
Love crim getting hyped for frogmite not knowing we are getting an even better one in this set as well
Talking about Flare of Denial and no one is mentioning Merfolk. LOL The biggest blue tempo deck in Modern.
What about that nightmare card with burning tree emissary?Or priest of gix
Mono blue tron with Ugin's labyrinth, Nulldrifter, and Kappa cannoneer sounds really spicy.
Flare of denial seems really good in dredge (;
I'm loving the meldown from ppl in the comments
Can't wait for the goyf so we can meme on who was wrong about it
wight of the reliquary gets cabal coffers or urborg or bojuka bog
Corgis are primarily cattle herders, but that counts
They said Wizards spoiled all the stuff that was leaked, but that isn't true at all.
STREET wraith, fetchland, bauble. Nethergoyf does not die to lightning bolt Richard :)
If affinity makes a turn again in popularity I say that Slag Fiend will be a good [1CMC] card. Usually a 4/4.
Thoughts?
I’m with Crim on the goofy font secret lair. I’m a new player so I don’t have much to compare it to, but this particular release speaks to me.
My biggest issue with the comic sans Secret Lair is that the artists weren't told about it.
In commander ugins labryth is going to be nuts in a colorless deck you can imprint an all is dust for a later turn and get it back to one side wipe the board
For once, on the lazy reference card names, I'm with Richard on something. If it was Phyrexians, I could find an excuse for it, but Eldrazi don't work like that, so it's just a placeholder name that nobody bothered to get a real name for. MH isn't an Un-set.
Ugin's Labyrith is pretty cool with Chromatic Orrery, All is Dust, Karn Liberated, Not of this world
I'm pretty sure if you turn a Hideaway land into Ugin's Labyrinth you can grab that card. Not sure how good that is but still
The issue with Ugin's Labyrinth is that it's card disadvantage, and while you can get that card back, a well timed land destruction effect is a 2 for 1.
Plus, you actually need to have the card to imprint it when you play it. If everything goes right it's incredibly broken, but the many moving pieces and points of interaction make it unreliable.
If it gets banned, it will be because of a specific combo that manages to break it, not because it's too good in general.
Pithing Needle will be the answer to it. It shuts down the card under it at least. But I agree with them. The card is a problem.
Okay, maybe not nethergoyf.
But could jund play the new sol land, and maybe a playset of distended mindbenders?
I'd say Boulderbranch Golem is the best Prototype for Ugin's Labyrinth in MonoGreen Tron.
Ive been desperate for a card like winter moon for historic brawl this is great :D
What yall are forgetting is that wotc is gonna dump some tripple card type tribal artifact enchantment that costs like 1 mana and sacs itself to power up the goyffs!
Winter moon pushes the necessity of fetch lands therefore pushing the set 28:10
Hot Takes:
- Ugin's Land is intentionally broken and will e banned 2 years after, just like Fury
- The new free spell cycle is unplayable, except for the red one
- Winter moon will see sideboard play
- Nethergoyf will not see play
My first thought with Ugin's Labyrinth is, how many cards of one color do I need in my deck to utilize my evoke elemental's evoke cost? Now picture requiring THAT many 7+ mana colorless cards in your deck! It feels too costly to build around. I think the ever-popular Boseiju will have something to say about Ugin's Lab.
With the Flare spells, don't discount potentially using evoke creatures. POSSIBLY evoke elementals, but that really depends on the board state.
PS - Chthonian Nightmare + 2x Priest of Gix = Infinite B mana!
I think colorless tron will get a huge boost between ugin labyrimth and the other land that counts as urza's while one play and can be sacced to fetch an urza land.
The alltype land is a commander card so modern at least is save from it
New goyf costs HALF as much as tarmogoyf and will see play and be good.
Cthonian Nightmare is significantly worse than Recurring Nightmare because when it enters the battlefield your opponent can remove it in response to the trigger that gives you the energy before you can activate it
Some wild takes this podcast.
The new goyf needs experimentation before we will know if it’s good - Jund is hardly the only place it could live. Scam loads up the graveyard pretty quickly and then beats down with a 3 power creature, and this pitches to Grief.
Ugin’s Labyrinth is really narrow. A land for tron that doesn’t tron? Is affinity even a tier 2 deck?
The blue flare seems pretty narrow, I don’t know how many blue creatures you’re looking to sac. Green, though, has stuff like arboreal grazer … turn one have 3 lands in play for 1 mana AND you negated the downside of the grazer sort of costing you a card? Seems good.
Winter moon I have no idea. It seems like it would be side board for mono blue and mono red in constructed. As far as commander, I welcome more non basic land hate and payoffs for having restricted colors.
Totally agree on the grazer + green flare.
Another thing about Nethergoyf in Scam: unlike the 2-mana green Goyf, this one goes SUPER well with Dauthi Voidwalker and Leyline of the Void. Lots of people saying this goyf's weak to graveyard hate (as if the old one wasn't), but not that many seem to realize it allows you to pack your own graveyard hate and not mess with its stats one bit.
The best use for nethergoyf right now is pitching it to grief
The one card that’s in the current Modern that could pitch to Ugin’s Labyrinth is Draco, but it’s in a deck that probably doesn’t want to play it.
For pronunciation, as a 40k fan, it is Kuh-Tho-ni-en
"Run enough specific card to turn this on?" They literally printed this IN the set. Nulldrifter.
So now that Kindred exists, and assuming it is a functional reprint of Tribal, doesn't that just mean there's more card types now? Like, 10.
Artifact, creature, enchantment, instant, land, planeswalker, sorcery, and tribal. Now battle? And kindred?
It's an erata not a functional reprint.
@@k9commanderYeah, I looked it up, and apparently they announced that last November. I completely missed that. And I'm surprised no one has talked about it.
Wasn't the previous record the Post Malone 1/1 One Ring for 2.5 Mil?
I'm with Richard on the Wight of the Reliquary hate train.
::Not a Modern player:: Do you run Subtlety to use the Flare of Denial? Is that something that might need to happen?
Thumbnail looks like a promotion for a small town post hardcore band coming through to play the local VA hall
Crim is always the voice of reason. 😂
coffers, urborg, surveil land, lotus vale w. stifle
I like Nulldrifter with Torpor Orb. Shutdown opponents etb get your draw on cast and a 4/4 flying annihilate 1 for 3.
Flare of Denial in Dredge? Probably not but it does have plenty of expendable blue creatures.
If Tarmogoyf is only good because it checks all graveyards, then surely it must be even better in Commander for checking two more graveyards!
Modern vanilla 1 drop to see play:
3/3 with no hoops to jump through
