    I'd look forward to a conversation from you guys about doomwakes modern or horizonless modern. Mtg is a board game and we can choose how to use these cards, so why not play traditional modern without horizons

    Unfortunately, the analysis of the modern "investment problem" is spot on. I bought a bunch of stuff for paper 2 years ago to get back into the tournament scene. Now I don't dare to calculate the current value of my collection due to the huge inflation caused by powercreep and MH-X sets. Probably will focus more an Arena and Timless for the upcoming months as I get to play the new cards but a fraction of the cost.

    I haven't played modern since Tarmogoyf got printed down below $20. The death of eternal formats was obvious as soon as they started printing more non-standard sets. Money, money, money. Hasbro will milk their cash cow until they kill it, and the hedge fund bros won't give a shit while it dies.

    Only way to actually get reliable for fun paper modern is proxy, unless you wanna go full sweat and win a pro tour who wants to drop 1k for a rotating deck

  • @Nic1700
    @Nic1700 2 дня назад

    I dislike how modern is non-rotating by its literal definition, but rotating with how it's supported and competitively played. In retrospect I think they should have changed the definition of Modern to all cards that came through Standard are always Modern legal, and the latest Horizons set is legal until the next one. That way there's only 1 powerful set pushing out old cards rather than an ever increasing number. Unless your deck is a Horizons based combo, it wouldn't functionally rotate. Sometimes you'd get extra toys for a couple years, and sometimes you wouldn't. It would mitigate the need to power creep. We wouldn't have needed Bowmaster for Ragavan, and then make no 1 toughness creatures because of Bowmasters, if Ragavan were just going to rotate after 2 years. If a card is really positive for the format, put it through standard or reprint it in the next Horizons. Plus we wouldn't have some Universes Beyond that are Modern legal and some aren't. A little more stability like old Modern would be nice.

    Regarding Modern, I haven't played it in paper since 2017. The reasoning being mostly because of the issues Richard described; many staples were no longer seeing play, and I bought into Legacy instead. I saw the writing on the wall in the first Modern Horizons set, that the format would simply be too volatile to have any deck remain relevant for a long period of time. Legacy actually has a better shot; the "staples" last longer, and certainly ebb and flow, because the answers are better. Decks are rarely invalidated forever, and receive tools that allow them to update and compete. Your skill matters far more in Legacy, because mistakes generally lose the entire game, so the pace of the game is slower, and the answers are so good it generally devolves quite quickly into "limited style gameplay" as Richard describes. There are exceptions to this, such as cards that are borderline unanswerable in certain shells even with almost all the cards in Magic's history, notably the sequencing of Grief+Reanimate in Daze shells (wait for a ban on this one before investigating). Exceptions aside, there is generally good enough interaction in Legacy to make just about whatever you want playable, even through high power level fluctuations and new inclusions, because of the skill ceiling being astronomically high. It's almost more economically efficient to buy a Reserved List mana base (or proxy it, the community is incredibly proxy friendly) and a few staples and to cycle through a couple Legacy decks with the mana base you have than it is to spend money on a rotating modern format. That's what I did in 2017, and I never, ever looked back. Just don't pick a Lands/Mox Diamond shell unless you are very, very stable financially.

    I play paper modern, and I still have a great time with it. I played golgari rock and did well with it, and for mh3 I built Boros Boom (thanks spike) and had an amazing time with it. In terms of price, my golgari was way more expensive than my Boros deck, the only real expensive card being phlage. I want to say I saw a lot of people complaining about facing Yawg, titan, tron and the like before MH3 because those were the best decks and in our 20+ people FnM modern tournaments you would always see them, but now there are a bunch of new decks to face and it’s refreshing. I don’t think all the old decks are dead, there is still time for decks to change and adapt to at least be able to compete. To say the entirety of modern is the top 5 decks is not right, random rouge decks can still smash them as their sideboards are not prepared as I did with $100 12 shadow against all the MH2 meta decks, and same goes for the older decks pre MH3.

    54:30 Impending triggers on end step, not upkeep. This knocks a turn off the clock, but it also means that your opponent gets a turn of it being a creature to answer it before it can attack.

    Say what you want about Universes Beyond, it really wasn’t affecting any format in a major way until LoTR released as a set planned for Modern play. Now you have to watch Constructed format play with the reminder that Lord of The Rings is a major part of the format. I know I am missing the one card from WH40k that was also played in Legacy, but that one isn’t at all as prevalent as Orchish Bowmasters or The One Ring. The One Ring engenders a horrible play pattern where the player that just played a repeatble card draw engine can’t really be punished for tapping out and setting up instead of being more proactive. Between playing Time Lord Doctor Tribal in one out of your seven casual FMN commander games and seeing The One Ring at your Modern tournament, I know which one makes me cringe more.

    Maybe Wotc thinks there are more new players than older players. So having new expensive cards cater to those new players more than old. But also, I’m not confident they are doing great things with the player equity they keep taking. Is the amount of new players generated from each IP worth the player equity that devalues everyone’s collection? Is this all about pushing digital because there is new design space and less overhead? WOTC needs to break off of Hasbro. It’s a shame WOTC and its games are held hostile by the other failing Hasbro brands.

    I learned how to play Magic via Modern about 10 years ago. It’s hard to find shops that promote 60 card formats in general. I will always love the format but it is not meant for the average player. I am heavily invested in it and can speak from experience trying to teach it to new players.

    Id like to call a point of order to everyones attention. You know you can just stop playing modern. In fact, if you take it a step further, you can actually JUST play modern again. Try starting your own format, possibly just modern legal cards, that only has cards that went through standard. If enough of yall mad modern players ACTUALLY stopped being the banana man in this act that WOTC is perpetrating, modern will straight up die, and you can replace it with something made by players, regulated by players, and cut wizards out of trying to manage a format that is obviously looked at as a money farm by the company supposed to be managing said format.

    Does Richard script his opinions for new cards to be constantly negative? Do you all have a "good cop/bad cop" philosophy when you all discuss what cards get mentioned on the podcast and what opinions you all will take on said cards? I swear almost every spoiler season he is poo-pooing on pretty much everything, and most of the time he is somewhat wrong to completely wrong about the cards that end up seeing play. Like I understand that not everyone on the cast has to have a positive opinion on new cards, and there are cards that end up being niche or bad, but FFS Richard is more often than not a downer, whether because he hates the cards for being "bad" or "poorly designed"/"too broken" etc, and again he is mostly wrong from what I have seen over the last several years. Where Richard does shine well is when interpreting results and issues with particular aspects of Magic after the fact. In other words: he's good at "hindsight is 20/20" more than the rest of the cast typically (Seth is good here as well but he tends to have a more positive spin while Richard has the more middle of the road take which comes off more honest and real overall).

    Shuko ban actually won't matter. It's hard to believe WotC could be dumb enough to make the same mistake as with Hogaak+Bridge, but people are already testing Shuko-less lists just in case WotC disappoints everyone (again). And the deck is (unsurprisingly) still incredibly oppressive and powerful.
