Modern Horizons 3 Turns Modern Upside Down | MTGGoldfish Podcast #489
I don’t vibe with Richard’s argument about the cheating incident at all. Basically boiled down to “people in sports cheat so it’s okay for people in magic to cheat.” No, the solution is that people who cheat in sports should also be heavily penalized and not celebrated just as this magic player should have owned their mistake and not used an erroneously granted mana to cast something they already know they shouldn’t have been able to. The point of the judges is to maintain the integrity of the game, if they make a mistake in ruling that dissolves that integrity you don’t go, “okay, fuck integrity let’s cheat then it’s officially sanctioned.” You go, “oh the judge made a mistake, let’s do what’s right.” It’s every players right to cheat if they want to, but to hear people condone it because their sports idols cheat is just bizarre.
They presumably did not want to undo the actions because they knew if the cards they drew were good or not which might change whether they want to use a card draw spell or perhaps if they had it shuffle with a fetch then draw. However, if it is the other player that benefits from the sloppy play that they are rewinding for, that knowledge should be a small penalty reward given to the player that wasn’t “cheating”
38:55 Crim is 100% correct, the guy should have taken the lose it was his fault for that planning well enough and he just proved how big of a scum bag he is with this one action
i'd be hyped for old border foils if they actually looked like gorgeous old border foils and not old border foils from wish 🙈 the biggest tragedy of MTG
Now that play boosters are more expensive, I wish remaster sets were cheaper rather than seen as a premium product. Remastered sets are made up of almost all reprints, can’t be used for standard play and typically contain a lower than average “value” per pack. I don’t understand why they’re seeing as a premium product. Sure you get new art, but everything else about the product is inferior to most standard sets and UB sets for gameplay purposes and value.
Valley Floodcaller with Lifecraft Engine has potential
Also re:fishmail/Richard: Black tutors dont break the singleton spirit the same way redundancy does. Some pieces dont *have* proper redundancy, you just picked out ramp and draw because there is plenty out there. But you wont tell me having 5 tutors to get cyc rift or smothering tithe is breaking the singleton spirit in the same way as running cyc rift and 5 other wipes, which can be dead draws unlike a black tutor.
Magda would play lifecraft.. if it wasn't 3 mana
I wanted to see more cards like Eruth, tormented prophet and Lier in the black and white. Eruth is one of my favorite pieces of art and I'm afraid we will never see those treatments again.
I would download a film and a mana
I feels Crims approach to the cheating is best I do say land tutors are the devil. I would love to see a clash where "search your library" is banned
First off magic isn’t sport. But the issue is with the judge in my opinion. Officials make bad calls all the time and you just have to live with it. But magic is more straight forward and this one could have been easily fixable from the sounds of it.
On the road side find: EVERYTHING on the internet is fake until proven otherwise.

Regarding the judge call, I think everyone is a bit right, in specific I can understand Richard's mindset of "its what the judje say, if the judge gave you an extra mana, you take it'. Tho I think I agree with Crim in the "I dont wanna be on the front page of reddit today". I wouldnt take the mana, not because of ethics and thing, but because I dont want to gain the reputation. I think you get more win percentages point if people think of you as the nice honest player. Makes it easier to bluff mid game for example.
Lifecraft engine is obviously for a Transformers deck.
"We don't have a mechanism for getting more Ricks into the market." Is such a hilarious MtG sentence. 29:20
My whole life, tournament tested, proven talented mtg players have been angle shooting, then claiming that they can't or don't calculate things INCREDIBLY precisely under pressure in fake apologies. Theyre always cheating, clearly. These arent the types of people to have only 3 cards in hand, tank on them for a good amount of time, and sincerely believe that 3+3+1=6. Way more likely these people definitely know that 3+3+1 =7, but also know they'll never be properly enforced or punished. At this point as a tournament player, youre just playing at a disadvantage to not shoot every shady angle in the book. Wotc has heavily incentivised that by consistently rewarding angle shooters.
You wouldn't download a mana.
Fwiw I'm pretty sure if I call up and tell my lgs I want a copy of w.e the secret lair is, they would hold it for me. Maybe that's uncommon for stores though
I like the old borders! but emnrakul doesnt looks on it. Others do. Also I LOVE that through the breach is on the set. Nahiri 100% casted through the breach with her cryptolips, so I love having the actual card having her in the art doing it. Thats actually my favorite card of the set, and im happy we got that art reprinted :) The other reflavored cards are fine, so long they're playable. Like hermit druid and mass hysteria are dope. If there are umplayable bulk ones, then im less hype about those.
another reason to never play competitive mtg - "the real pros would never think of fair play so everything is permitted" reminds me of that cheater tweet pleasant kenobi made a video about. "everyone is cheating so I HAVE to cheat to be competitive" then again Richard also thinks anything a company does besically cant be wrong as long as it makes the company money
Regarding the roadside collection, someone stole a friend's bag with his collection in it. Easily $30k in cards They didn't know what it was and dumped it on the roadside A RANDOM GUY who has played tcgs before, saw it and picked it up and found the contact info in the bag. Called him and returned it So there are situations where this can happen
Am with Seth & Crim, would stand on the side of honour for myself.
Not college football fans I see lol
cards look in too good condition to have been picked up on the side of the road.
I can’t believe you are justifying the cheater for actively cheating.
There's too much mind reading going on, and mind reading doesn't exist. You can't know a person's intent unless they physically tell you. In this instance the judge made a call, that's the correct call as per the rules, you take the win. There is no controversy here except people's feelings on the matter with a lot of dropped context, which is to be disregarded as purely irrational.
The secret lair test would be neat, but I feel the bigger WPN store would just shadow the local mom and pop stores. So if you compare my small towns game store compared to the Dallad Ft Worth area, I'd have to travel to Dallas to get the Secret Lair product. When online all I'd have to do is click a button online to get it shipped to my house
This is the worst take I've heard from Richard, doesn't even sound like an engagement play, just faulty logic.
It's like richard never has heard of good sportsmanship. There are examples of exactly what he is saying doesn't happen in other sports. In soccer they will kick the ball to the other team after an injury and they are not required to. In tennis they will tell their opponent to challenge a call if they think it was wrong. It doesn't happen every time but good sportsmanship does happen even with money on the line.
Richard is such a bad person. Wow
I annoys me so much when Seth tldrs something without all the information that was presented and then richard fires out weak takes that dont actually work because he didnt get all the available information. Its frustrating.
39:20 it’s a good point by Richard but in all sports there is also the concept of good sportsmanship which is not just a joke but part of the essence of any sport.
This secret lair test is really making me sick and tired of the way WOTC is handling reprints. I'm just going to proxy the cards if they don't make it feasible to buy them at a reasonable price
Richard defending a clear soft cheating incident is so funny to me but somehow not surprising. Players at that level shouldn't be making mistakes like that and those plays should always be scrutinized.
Why am I not surprised that the guy who loves to win at any cost and sits back every week just to cheese combo wins also supports poor sportsmanship? I've been to Worlds once. I'm nothing special, but I definitely did the tournament scene for a long while in multiple games... if my mistake, which broke the rules, leads to an unfair win? Nah, I'm forfeiting that match. You can absolutely choose to play 'letter of the law' and go whatever the judge rules, but it's your choice what type of person or player you will be. (Also, Seth, it doesn't matter if you cheat intentionally or make an honest mistake. If you break the rules, at a serious tournament, it needs to be held equally accountable in the moment. That's why rules exist.)
Why is Innistrad a premium set?
There should have been greymond and cavern of souls in at least. And craterhoof should be in the main set... For drafting it looks interesting at like 90 bucks... Everything above is madness for what they put in lieteral draft boosters. Whats in there to call it playboosters? Not even special guests... What i do love is ther hermit druid and some of the borderless art. Abrade, mausoleum wanderer the cultivator .... Some really nice pieces, but to little for that price stil 😅 The dnd reprints are weird because its dnd versions from dnd cards... But they look cool, but possibly will stilbe to expensive to get the fat dragon or the owlbear 😢
Big thumbs up for Crim on his takes during the cheating discussion
Oof, what a horrible take by Richard on the extra mana thing. This line of thinking makes the game worse on a whole, and that's IF it wasn't intentional. Being exactly one mana short of a win is a verrry suspicious situation. So even if Nicol didn't intentionally cheat, this clears the way for many others who will use this as a precedent for their own angleshooting. Be better than this, man. If nothing else, take away that Magic players on the internet judge cheaters harshly, so think twice about rationalizing this behavior on your podcast.
Heartless summoning unplayable? It's legitimently one of the best Black ramp spells in certain commander decks. I'm glad to have one with the Nyx border now.
33:20 A similar thing happened to me at a pre-release. I cast a 5 drop creature even though I didn't have the color required for it (I had like all the colors except for one) but we both didn't notice until 3 turns later, so when we called a judge the ruling was exactly this: too much time has passed to reverse and both players failed to notice. So the ruling was basically in my favor (the player cheating on mana). I was allowed to keep my 5 drop in play and it's what won me the game. I have never felt so bad in my life lol! I wasn't trying to cheat but I mean that was the official ruling. I was practically begging the judge to punish me, give me a warning or something but they judged that I didn't do anything wrong essentially since my opponent also failed at noticing. It's such a weird rule.
Yeah I'm with Richard, accept the referee's call. If it's a controversial call or a bad one, that's his problem not yours. 😂 You didn't write the rules and you didn't make the call. I don't see why people would get angry at the player. I mean you'd only be angry if they cheated intentionally. But in such a case you have to give the benefit of doubt. Unless it's a repeat offender.
I didn't realise that if I play paper Magic, I don't have to tap mana to cast my spells anymore. Good to know, thanks Richard.
Rank opportunists take the ruling.
Lifecraft engines crew cost is not high. 1drops with 2 power can crew it.
If you can't judge someone's intent when they make a mistake that would favor them, then judge the mistake, not the intent. Punish cheaters. It's really not that difficult from an ethics perspective. "But it's really sad for that player if they didn't do it intentionally!" - Yeah, but being lenient on these is really sad for the player sitting across who didn't make that mistake. If you're playing all day and it's exhausting, I get it, but so did the other player and they didn't do a mistake. Again: why then would you give the advantage to the player who made the mistake as opposed to the player who kept it together? I thought this was competitive?
i don't understand, is foundations that powerful when none of the top decks are playing more than a couple of cards from the set?
"I wish stores would be able to just buy unlimited secret lairs from WotC" Richard you're supposed to be the smart one! 😂 jk no offense to Seth and Crim. But you can't be serious here, this would be so abusable and would completely destroy the SL secondary market. Not that I care about SL lol, but just from a logical pov it doesn't seem to make sense.
Anyone else always hear "sordid service fee" on the ad read?
