An important note about Chthonian Nightmare. Because it has an ETB trigger, priority has to pass before you can activate it, if they are holding up removal they can get it.
Good catch
Whoops, good catch!
Came for this ❤
Came here to comment the same thing.
yeah its a nice little design trick they've done lately
You mention a few times that Recurring Nightmare is banned in Legacy, but it isn't. It's only banned in Commander. I've seen a few Nic Fit lists over the years running Recurring Nightmare, as it's another way to sac Veteran Explorers while potentially returning something for big value.
I loved running a BUG nic fit list that would loop grave titan in-between pyr and toothy shenanigans. Seriously underrated card as a 1 or 2 of
@@StoneAgeDudemanGaming Pir and Toothy?
Nic Fit players will be like "Hey check out my Legacy deck" and then whip out the most Commander nonsense you've ever seen. I love it.
The Nic Fit cabal is what keeps Commander linked to the eternal banlists
@Wildfire393 Homie, casting Pir, going to grab toothy, casting toothy, going to get pir, sacking the first pir to get gravetitan, sacking titan, sacking toothy and drawing cards. These play patterns are wild and it's the reason to play nic fit.
The fact that a VETERAN EXPLORER is conplaining in the flavor text of winter moon is just *chefs kiss*
Lol, love it.
@@jaredschroeder7555 speaking of veteran explorer ..... think that new green creature sac card for 2 lands worth it?
You mentioned turning a 7/7 into a 2/2 bear but you forgot to mention Griselbrand by name to then call him Grizzelbrand. This is something I need for the format.
Grizzelbrand isn’t even the mostly played 7/7 in the format
more like Grizzelbear
Not to mention Kudo buffs Karnstructs
You can turn a flipped delver into an Insectile ABEARration. And the 20/20 from Dark Depths into BEAR-it Lage.
I'm glad this is the quality of @thrabenu subs
I think the best home for Ugin's Labyrinth, Affinity. It lets you put a Myr Enforcer or Sojourner's Companion under it early to pay for urzas saga and get it back later when you can cast it for cheaper/have solid mana. I also like the cute effect of "saving" cards from discard like an early Kaldra/karn/ugin only to bring it back later when you can cast it. plus I have a dream of putting a "Not of This World" under it and having a land where I can effectively tap to counter a spell.
Winter Moon’s impact on Urza’s Saga is huge. If you’re on the draw, and can play this in response to a Saga, then you’ve almost certainly killed a construct. Due to how ancient tomb and city of traitors line up against it. Possibly two.
Flare of Denial can see play as Force 5-6 in Blue Drege. Sac my Narcomoebas and Prized Amalgam and trigger Bridge
HMMMMMM
Also, maybe you could play it in Painter? You can paint your own creatures blue.
It also mitigates a lot of the issues Ice Fang Coatl and Baleful Strix had against Orcish Bowmasters
Wight of the Reliquary seems amazing in a Field of the Dead deck. I know that field isn’t really played in Legacy, but maybe someone comes up with something.
Also, Chthonian Nightmare is more susceptible to removal because it has an etb. Your opponent can respond to the energy production with Nature’s Claim, Force of Vigor, etc.
I think the most intriguing thing about Kudo is how it hoses dark depths game plans. Yup, you made marit lage, he's a 2/2, enjoy.
phil, please use Kudo alongside all the X/1's we don't get to see anymore!
Spicy!
My first thought for Winter Moon is in Modern Elves. In the early days of Elves (Circa 2000), Winter Orb was a great way to disrupt your opponent while barely interrupting your gameplan. With Priest of Titania coming to the format, give Winter Moon a try.
I genuinely appreciate the Greek lesson, Phil. Did not know that, and would never have if you hadn't told me.
A spontaneous thought about this style of videos: They're really nice but I also think they benefit a lot from being 2+ people talking about the cards. I don't know how realistically doable that is for you, it's just a raw observation I have. I could see you and someone like BoshNRoll doing a good job of it, for example.
Kudo is also a nightmare for Death's Shadow, and Wight could be real fun in something Nic Fit-y with Veteran Explorer to further break symmetry by grabbing a total of 3 lands while your opponent maybe gets 2
Phelia looks potentially good in a Stoneblade shell, she can repeat your Stoneforge tutors, reset Living Weapons, and get bodies out of Cryptic Cloak. Also the fact Phelia is tutorable by Recruiter of the Guard and Yorion D&T is a deck filled with ETBs nowadays has got to be something.
How many creatures does Kudo actually shrink compared to the ones it grows?
It grows Orcish Bowmasters and the accompanying orc army. It grows DRC. It grows Karnstructs. It’s indifferent to most goblins.
It gives -1/-1 to Murktide Regent.
It’s more effective against reanimator/show and tell decks, but your opponent would still get their trigger off Atraxa or Archon of Cruelty.
I guess, I’d want it against Stiflenought?
marit lage
Uro, Triumph of Saint Katherine, Murktide Regent (technically), Yorion, a few 3/2s across a bunch of decks, but those are for sure not worth mentioning.
Dark depths
Speaking of Orcish bow masters, it’s pretty sweet that Kudo effectively makes your board immune to bow master pings.
Godhead of Paw
also sweet if you control a plague engineer you always know what creature type you want to name
Cathonian nightmare is more fixed than it might seem at first: it has an etb trigger, which opens up a window for the opponent to remove it before you get priority again. Still sweet but maybe temper expectations if dodging removal is the expectation.
Attack with wight, sacrifice guy/bloodghast tutor depths, untap after damage with maze, second activation grab stage
Also can grab itself a sejeri step and that's crazy
Phelia + Containment priest could be something to look into
I am a simple man. I see cards that might work in 12-Post, I get giddy.
Hey Phil, I think the most powerful home for Flare of Denial is actually going to be vintage dredge. That deck has problems casting FoW and FoN but with prized amalgams and narcomebias flare might be extremely good there
I think one spot flare of denial could possibly see play in is either an oops all spells or manaless dredge style deck. It works with your 4th narcomeba if you haven’t drawn it or have other creature on board, prized amalgam, and ig thassa’s oracle if they try to interact in response to the etb. Probably better options but could see experimentation.
Flare of cultivation seems great in veteran explorer decks
Recurring nightmare is banned in commander, not in legacy. I used to play it as a 1 of in nic fit
Whoops. Got my wires crossed.
I want to mention a possible home regarding Flare of Denial: Dredge specifically running Prized Amalgam
It’s kinda fun that just a lot of these interesting cards are randomly perfect for Nic fit, fully expect it to be unplayable but eight of the reliquary, flare of cultivation and winter moon also seem like fun toys to try.
Ohhhh, the feeling of phelia on murktide or marit lage is gonna be such a good boy.
Aether hub is quite playable an an extra energy card. Being able to grab grief on your first nightmare helps a lot.
Wight and dryad arbor is an amazing combo, turns any fetch into a crop rotation. could be worth running 2 now with grist also liking arbors. Khalni garden is also a consideration for the wight package. Steppe is a cool blowout option but an off color tap land is suspicious
Winter Moon: You can still run Nonbasics for utility, but you want to only run a few (Even if that few is literally just 4x ancient tomb). Even though this is not how it works, it *kinda* gives nonbasics "Legendary" meaning you only get one at a time.
Wight of the Reliquary: It's also worth mentioning that BOTH of it's creature types are supported tribes giving it a bit more flexibility even in some more off-meta strategies.
I always assumed the tron lands were looking at the land names not land types to determine if you controlled an Urza’s mine and an Urza’s powerplant
Wight of the Reliquary with Bloodghast looks interesting. Free tutor every turn and it can be used with the newly leaked green flip PW (Grist). I am very excited to play the Wight in my Maverick deck.
dryad arbor is also really cool with wright of the reliquary. Turn 1 forest and greensun into dryad arbor. Turn 2 wright. Turn 3, a couple one drops and a Gaea's cradle that taps for 3.
Or, if you need an extra cradle mana for a craterhoof, you can turn a tapped forest into a dryad arbor
Flare of Denial - Modern Dredge allstar with Narcomeba, where you dont even have to have narcomeba in play when your opponent casts their spell. Opp casts, you cast otherwordly gaze and mill narcomeba, it comes into play, you then sac it to Flare of Denial, then your Prized Amalgams come back in their end step. Insane
Wight of the reliquary notably increases the stock of dryad arbor by making it so that fetchlands can also feed it
Neat to see this sort of spoiler content from you, with a juiced up set like MH3 so many interesting cards to look at. Hope to see more of these sorta vids when the spoiler season fully kicks in.
Awesome video! I really appreciate getting your early takes on MH3 in regard to Legacy!
Worth noting for Flare of Denial: Narcomoeba sacs to it, so this could potentially protect some Dredge/Cephalid Breakfast lines. I don't know if that makes it good, tho.
Giving a broken mechanic like dredge protection seems good
I was very surprised to see them print a stacks card like winter moon in a new set
I think its kinda needed with all those sick non basic lands.
It's funny, I was just thinking to myself..."Dam, Tron should could use some more enablers to make it even better..."
40:45 Phil letting out his anti Murktide, Depths, and Urza Saga's hate out lol.
Nethergoyf probably wants to be a blue/black deck so it can get instant and sorcery off cantrips, since most black instants are probably removal spells and you may want to hold them up until needed.
You said recurring nightmare is banned in legacy, but it isn’t ._.
It’s banned in commander but it’s fully playable in legacy and nobody plays it.
Yup, I got my wires crossed on that one.
I know it isn't good, but you can use Kudo as a "lord" for infect creatures!
Edit:
Recurring nightmare is not at all banned in legacy; it is in edh, though.
I've been trying to make Faces of the Past work in commander for a long tim and Wight of the Reliquary is just *chef's kiss*. I think this thing is going to be a staple across multiple formats.
notably planar nexus also makes getting green for things like sylvan scrying etc more consistent
I think your view on Urza's Cave is a little undervalued. Land tutor effects are most of the time the strongest card in Lands and we currently play 3 cards that do it. Crop Rotation which is a huge blowout if countered, Elvish Reclaimer which can be removed before any use comes out of it, and Expedition Map which is a 1 of tutor target off of Urza's Saga that doesn't even put the land into play. While I don't expect the card to be played as a 4-of, I fully anticipate this being slotted in as at least a 1 of. This gives you a crop rotation effect that you can recur from the graveyard if you were to dredge over it, and it can be repeatedly used to get silver bullets from your deck while continuing to loam every turn
I don't think it's unreasonable to play as a 1-of, but I'm not expecting great things.
Lands is going to abuse this card. uncounterable unkillable uninteractable land tutor is terrifying in late game. def think it is a 1 of in standard static orb lands.
4 mana is a pretty high cost, and it etbs tapped. I am not convinced yet. And stiffle is making rounds in legacy. Will be curious to see.
@@adamm4942I think the problem with this card is that it lines up kinda poorly with what the deck needs to be doing at the different stages of the game.
- In the early game, it costs a lot more mana than the other tutor effects. If you play it as a 1 of, you’d not want to tutor for this because you already have the land tutor ability unless you are really setting up a slow line.
- In the late game, you often have a lot of the good things to loam already like wasteland and saga. While you can loam both, you are often going to have land drops be your main limiting factor.
I think this slots best in to the spot that the cycling triome filled, but I’m not sure it’s actually better than the triomes in a lot of lists for grind value. Being fetchable, a colored source, and not taking a land drop is also an upside for those.
I don’t think Urza’s cave is bad, but it’s easy to see all the places it is good while overlooking when it’s pretty bad. Every card has an opportunity cost, and the cave is a useful but narrower card than it first appears imo
It costs too much mana and is only good in a late game scenario where you can repeatedly dredge it and have mana to do everything. It's worse than most other land tutors. It's another colourless land in a deck that already has too many and I think it is several years too late to be good. People have been wanting an effect like this for ages but this isn't it imo. Happy to be proven wrong but as a lands player I'm not sure I want this.
Edit: Also I think that saying reclaimer is worse because it can be removed is a bit silly.
It seems Bloodghast and Wight of the Reliquary could be friends.
I love this actually. It's so simple, but so clean
love these kind of early meta decks analysis of spoilers, keep it up!
The art for Null Elemental Blast looks like a really sweet sword.
Phelia looks really good with skyclave. Blink skyclave, then blink the token next attack
Tutoring up a Kudo to shrink a Marit Lage sounds hilarious.
I’m really excited for eight of the reliquary, its synergy in maverick shells seems cool, sacrificing a heirarch to essentially give it +2/+2 seems powerful, especially with vigilance.
Any thoughts on Nulldrifter in a Stiflenaught shell? While it provides less recurring value than Uro, you still get the cast trigger if you cast it under a Dress Down or Doorkeeper Thrull.
Came here with the exact same thought, the turn 2 flash at end step into turn 3 Nulldrifter seems decent at least. You can also stifle the sac trigger if you have literally nothing else going on.
@@Masterfrogg Yeah. It also beats Delvers and DRCs in the air, which is far from nothing, and annihilator is a meaningful threat that grinds our value very quickly. Plus, it asks nothing from your manabase. Far easier to cast than Uro.
Wight putting the land in tapped removes the search for fetchlands and crack in same turn.
Force of denial is another free counter for any thassa's oracle decks
First card shown at 2:14
Winter Moon in nic fit would be sick, no ramp and all your opponent's lands are tapped. I really hope they print nic fit cards into modern.
Flare of Denial sacrificing Narcomoeba or Satoru is a pretty good way to trigger Bridge from Below. 2 copies coming soon to a dredge sideboard near you!
Flare of Denial might be an interesting emergency counter in Modern Mill.
Chthonian Nightmare and Dockside Extortionist when your opponent/s have/has at least three Artifacts/Enchantments means you can just dump all creatures from your gy to the battlefield and have infinite Treasures and Energy. :X
37:02 holy shit, chill, phil xD
Is Phil, my cheerios hero, not going to mention the potential of kudo/the bear in the glorious Cheerios shell?
(maybe it's not the best but curious on ur thoughts :D)
The thing that makes me nervous about flare of denial is the utility. Think about how many times have games seen hard cast FON? You can play out delver while still holding up FOW essentially, and in a few turns you can just hold open counter spell. I am not saying this fits into a current delver shell. Force of Denial just gives me there is going to be a new better version of a delver style deck that plays it as a staple vibes.
Cant you use some nonbasic stuff like ancient tomb with winter moon? You can untap it and your basics. Theres problems with that but its not as bad to have turn 1 ancient tomb wintet moon into turn 2 mountain into goblin 3 drop
Flare of Denial also helps spirits by giving them more interaction
Kudo + Plague engineer naming 'bear'
What do you think of flare of denial in Oops all spells type decks?
Flare of denial could work in dredge decks where you sac a narcomoeba or a prized amalgam
im curious if nethergoyf is good enough to shift delver decks into a full RB list, focusing on the rescaminator package to go fast and interrupt the opponent, with Stalker, DRC and now Goyf as the powerful 1 drop bombs to serve as your early-game payoffs
I could imagine seeing Flare of Cultivation in a Nic fit style Deck
Maybe I am thinking about Winter Moon wrong, but could you build a turbo deck that uses lotus petal, chrome mox, and a mix of basic lands and sol lands and make this work. You still get to untap one nonbasic per turn. So you can untap say a tomb, chrome mox untaps because it isn't a land, and if you have one or two basics in play you still have plenty of mana to work with. This really neuters multicolor control decks ability to fight a sol land, chrome mox start.
while i dont think Flare of Denial will be a 4-of, I think some control decks will run 2-3. Strix and Ice-Fang can be sac'd for this which can take the decision making out of "should i play this creature or hold it for Force of Will/Negation." you can play your defender and draw your card, while still holding up countermagic
Kudo is going to do very silly things in decks that might want Ornithopters and Memnites. There's also stuff like Plague Engineer that would love to see this card in some sort of Maverick style deck.
Elsh Norn + Bear maker thingy seems good.
Do you think urza’s cave could impact the vintage format? Maybe in some sort of shops deck?
Also, what are your thoughts on flare of denial in temur rhinos? I feel like this gives Shardless agent more utility.
I'm very surprised you didn't put "Flare of cultivation" in here. Especially Nic Fit is a deck you like. Opening hand of 1 Leyline of the void 2 veteran explorer 3 forest 4 Helm of obedience 5 flare of cultivation 6 blue card 7 force of will is a turn 2 nic fit win with force back up. lol. Yes perfect hand but remove the 2 blue cards and there is a lot of things you can put there.
probably because it wasn't officially confirmed, only the blue one. i was surprised he didn't mention nic fit for Wight of the Reliquary though
@@zombiemage1451flare of cultivation was officially announced back in February, but I think this video is just the new announcer.
I never noticed the Elden Ring frame on the background. I hope we get some FromSoft Universes Beyond shit someday
Flare of Denial seems great with Shardless Agent or the now defunct Ice-Fang Coatl
I hate to burst your bubble, Phil, but I believe Nexus can count for one of the missing Tron lands, but not both. Mine and Power Plant are worded similarly to the recent Party mechanic, which unfortunately cannot count one creature in multiple roles
Chthonian nightmare, disciple of gix(the one that adds 3 mana on etb) and a bowmaster in grave is an infinite damage, mana and huge orc combo , solved
Death's Shadow fears the Bears.
I saw someone tweet Ugin’s Labyrinth in Leyline Dominion for turn 1 Scions. Pretty spicy
between wight of the reliquary and the new 3 mana green card where you can sac a creature to put basic lands into play I am very excited for nic fit.
I love these podcast style videos!
nic fit is eating good with MH3 >:3
i, as a mainly cEDH player but also dabble in legacy, i think urza's cave will probably be way better in cEDH then in legacy, especially if the deck is low color green+x to look for gaia's cradle
kudo could be funny in urza's constucts deck, to give them basically +2/+2
nethergoyf has the adventage to be black, this makes it kinda easy to get creatures into the grave with troll
flare of denial could see play in blue dreage and sac narcomiba
phelia could be really sick in white+black decks maybe with abusing initiative cards like white plume adventurer and seasoned dungeonier
That 2/2 bear that turns everything into a bear will be insane in Hardened Scales. You will always have the biggest creature that way
So, for Nethergoyf stuff, is Grist a creature AND planeswalker in the GY?
yes. counts as a creature everywhere that isn't the battlefield at all times. same reason he can technically be your commander.
Flare of denial works well with legacy dredge because some of the creatures that are cheated into play are all blue
Hey Phil, can I make a merch request? I would love to buy a t-shirt with the large crest over your left shoulder with thraben university written underneath, instead of the small crest with the writing beside it that you currently offer.
Maybe i’m missing something (as i’m not a legacy player) but isn’t flare of denial arguably better than FoN in Cephalid Breakfast decks? Can be used on your (combo) turn and hits everything
where did you get the cool shirt?
mutated cultists is interesting, cast trigger remove the counters from Dark Depths (maybe play something big for the mana discount but that probably doesn't matter)
Recurring nightmare is legal in legacy, right? And Phelia can be good in a RW initiative shell?
Haven't seen it in the comments yet but seems like winter moon and opposition could be something really good together
You can make infinite black mana with Chthonian Nightmare and 2 priest of gix. Maybe there's something playable in that.
Null Elemental Blast would probably make it into non-red Painter lists if those are around.
Surpised no mention of Narcomoeba with Flare of Denial. That'd be the first place I'd expect it.
And lastly, Cthonian Nightmare may have something with Priest of Gix. Not sure what it is, but maybe something. -If my head is working correctly can't it go infinite with Orcish Bowmasters???-
I feel like Phelia is going to find a good home in Dnt. The ability to blink recruiter, blink skyclave and then blink the token that skyclave creates. Don't know if its going to make Dnt good enough again in legacy tho
you can sac your Thassa's Oracle to counter a spell for free with Flare of Denial.
The dog can also exile chalice 😅 or planeswalker...
Not sure white want to do this kind of stuff but i like it
