We've been using GoPros to record a lot of our in-car footage. After buying DJI Mics, I decided to try the Pocket 3. And because of those two, I just ordered the Action 5 Pro. I'm excited for the low light capabilities and really excited that we can connect two DJI Mic 2s to the camera! That's going to be super useful.

Hello, the ND filter of DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is not waterproof, it is put on; we have considered the firmness, so the magnetic bracket can only be connected in one direction.
Well done review! You touched on some points that no other reviewer mentioned. Had no clue the dji had the internal storage and the depth meter. GoPros filters are nice, but man, I really like what DJI has been doing and at the price point they are doing it at. It’s a solid product it seems and appreciate you diving into both of them.
Great review. I vlog outdoors in temps that can regularly exceed 100 degrees. Most of my filming is done walking in temps between 85-105 degrees. I've owned GoPros from the 3 up to the 11. I jumped into the Osmo scene when the Action 3 came out and played around with both GoPro and DJI for awhile. It didn't take long before I dropped GoPro altogether. DJI never overheats to the point of shutting down. The screen may turn off but it keeps filming. GoPro will just shut off on me leaving me to bake in the heat until it has cooled enough to reboot. GoPro has also had a history of randomly losing clips or damaging files. I've had many clips from GoPro that were damaged to the point they were not usable. Way too many issues with the Gopro for me. DJI has never, ever let me down. I just bought the Action 5 to replace my 4, and I have the Pocket 3 as well. For me, reliability is far more important than new lenses. I need something that works all of the time. Thank you again for the video.
learn how to use properly a sd card and all of a sudden your GoPro will work you won't loose footage even if your cam gets crushed under a car or spends days lost underwater which I don't think any dji cam could resist. it's same as blaming apple when using a $3 charging cable. For people who needs a real action cam the GoPro is still way far ahead as the dji is closer to an iPhone with a rugged case and since the iPhone is in another category in terms of quality there's no reason to buy the action 5 except to fall for dji's wave of clickbait sponsored reviews and comparisons
@@lothaire.m3 bullsht. I use multiple cameras of different suppliers and the only one that I can't trust at all is GoPro. Overheats, turns off, hangs up. Does not matter what sd cards I use. And "learn to use properly a sd card"??? Seriously?
@@VRMinde "your GoPro will work you won't loose footage even if your cam gets crushed under a car or spends days lost underwater" I said that because it happened to me and the Gopro was still working before it got replaced for free by Gopro after car incident and still working perfectly fine after water incident and in both case I got back the footage. I've used GP10 from -25°C over 3600m/12'000ft to 40°C in summer heat and it has never let me down. Meanwhile dji drones.. well well I hope that their action cam are more reliable than their drones.. About the sd card its just that if you use a shitty sd card your Gopro will be horrible to use it will lag freeze and loose footage all because the card can't keep up with the camera, and this doesn't happen with dji cams because their compression rate is much higher than Gopros (80mbs for dji vs 120-200mbs for dji)
@@lothaire.m3 I lost footage from dji, insta, and gopro when I drowned them on the bottom of the sea... multiple times :D Never in any other way from any of my cams. Nice honest sounding comparison, stumbled across this video and glad I did. Sounds like you are truly comparing them and not trying show a favoritism towards one over the other.
I love the proper use of a thing you're reviewing and comparing by putting some miles on it. Such a breath of fresh air from the "go go go" mentality of most tech reviewers today where they review it after a week based on notes from the company. Keep it up!
This was an amazing review! Brought out the new features of each but also talked through the subjective, the old school vs new was a brilliant way of phrasing it. Amazing job. Oh, Osmo for me. That pressure guage system sounds awesome.
I really appreciate your well produced footage. Often, an image tells more than a 10 min spec-read. Your taking tech outside approach really clicks with me. Thank you!
If you plan to have an external mic with your action camera then the DJI is the best choice. You can connect the DJI Mic 2 directly to the camera without any drop in audio quality. The GoPro can do it too but it sounds like you’re taking over the phone. However, as someone who shoots 90% in native vertical, GoPro’s superview/hyperview is a must have. I wonder why no one has copied that from GoPro
the reviews don't stop!! thank goodness for that. crazy to see how far the gopro has come while seeing the quality of life changes that a new-ish comer is able to provide. didn't realize how slow a gopro could seem when compared to how fast the dji A5 is!
The color science and artificial look from the DJI is the only con making me think hard to get it or skip, the question is can we fix that when shooting in log and later post processing it with our liking? GoPro footage is the day looks so much more cinematic. Great review Becca!
You can change the color mode on previous DJI Action series cameras so it looks flatter and not as HDR. You can also shoot in Log and edit with different LUTs. I'll bet you can already find video from the Action 5 on RUclips with the different color settings, so you may be able to take a look and see if you like what you can get out of camera. The Action 3 and 4 had a color mode called "D-Cinelike" that allows shadows to be darker and highlights to blow out.
I think I like your videos so much because you review these products like I would do. So u hit all the right spots that I want to know about that certain tech. Thanks for ur video Becca!
This was extremely clear. If I buy one this year it will probably be the Osmo 5 I liked the unedited footage better and I think in the end that is what it comes down to. Thanks for this Becca.
Thank you for the nuanced comparison! I still like how the gopro exposes daylight shots, but the low light is hard to deny on the action 5. I think it may even be beneficial under tree cover/canopy in the summer. I know my hero 11 can fall apart in the woods due to how dark it can be.
I've seen many reviews of both this products and comparison, but none were as good as yours. You seemed very onest and touch very important topics. Keep it up!
Becca I struggle to decide if you're better at writing or editing because these videos are so simple in execution yet constantly keep me interested and leaving with a real sense of value. Wow :)
Another thing worth noting is the DJI Action can pair to DJI's excellent Mic that uses 32bit float audio. Steps the audio game up considerably! After getting the OSMO Pocket 3 creator combo with the DJI Mic, it was hard to choose the Hero when I needed an action cam so I went with the Action 4. I literally unsubscribed the The Verge one you went solo. Keep up the amazing work!
The thing is... In order to use the "new" features of the GoPro, you have to spend hundreds of dollars more.. As much as it's cool they are trying to make it more diverse in it's abilities, you have to spend like $1000 to get all the lens' and filters and mounts.. ( keep in mind I am in Canada where the camera is almost $600 alone ).. The Osmo Action 5 has it's new features included in the price. I have been GoPro for a long long time.. I have owned the 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and now 12. As much as I would love the 13, I don't wanna spend upwards of $1000 to get the new lens, and my 12 is basically as good the 13 without buying all the extra goodies so this year I won't be buying a GoPro. I may however buy the Action 5 because riding my MTB in the forest has a lot of lighting changes and better low light can be very important. Nice to see such a big change to GoPro in the additional lens' but the cost is prohibitive.
I have watched all the Smart Devil screen protector videos and this is easily the Best One. I love the quality, I love the vibe, I love the explanation, great video bro.
you won my subscription, all dji issues can be fix with firmware (eg wb with nd filter coz its white balance sensor is outside the filter) while gopro limits coz of its aging processor and sensor tries to win you with its lens options. the a5 charges twice as fast as the GP13.
Nice work on this 👏🏻 One more thing to note… software / usability. While it’s been a few generations since I got a GoPro, being “old school”, I’m sure it hasn’t changed much. DJI always wins software and usability battles hands down for me. A lot more intuitive for my brain and the tech *just works*.
Great video!! Last year I was was looking for a tiny video camera to carry around that I wouldn't have to worry about so much while traveling. I read up on GoPro and DJI but ultimately settled on the Action 4 because of GoPro's lack of innovation in recent years. There's a lot of little quality of life improvements but the big one for me is that it supports fast charging via USB. It takes about 20 mins to charge the battery to 80%, which is so insanely useful if you're constantly shooting a lot. There's also the whole wireless mic setup that is very easy to do. I think this year GoPro has stepped up their game a lot due to competition but DJI takes the win for how I use it as a camera. That instant recording time is killer.
Becca, big thanks for the detailed comparison! This really helped me make up my mind since I will be shooting in low light most of the time. I’m now subscribed!
I'm not even in the market for an action camera but you make it so entertaining for us camera nerds. Hope you get more sponsors to make this sustainable. Thank you!
Thanks for the review, Becca. It's cool to see DJI and Insta360 both bring in AI noise reduction into their action cameras. This one feels like the first in a while to be a big upgrade. The Action series has had 4K 120p since the Action 2, but the difference of the bigger sensor (although the same size as last year) and better noise reduction seem to make the camera a lot more flexible. I wish DJI would allow a different lens though. The Action series lens seems generally equivalent to Superview in GoPro. I hope this higher resolution sensor allows more cropped video to still look good. Again, really enjoyed the review. Far more useful than the camera sitting on a table, filming a wall while waiting to overheat, which seemed to be a big part of action cam reviews for the past several years.
I really appreciate Becca's approach to video reviews. When I watch other content creators I think "did they really get together for drinks for a review for B-roll or is this just their life?". Everything Becca films feels purposeful and has intention beyond brain rot. Keep it up!
Heyo! Just found your new channel, just want to say that you and Dieter were the only two people I knew or cared about at the verge. So glad you're trying something new, best of luck!
the pain point with the GoPro is the use of a new battery. like it they kept the design compatible with my older hero 8 to 12 battery. i would've bought it in a heart beat.
Great review, Becca! Always appreciate your unique and creative perspective on cameras and tech. When it comes to GoPro vs DJI Action debate these days… it’s not even close tbh. You can easily get the warmer GoPro look in post with the right LUT. Plus there’s Actual Fast Charging. And reliability. A super fast and intuitive interface. And reliability. Battery life out the wazoo. Reliability. And did I mention how the Action 4 NEVER freezes or loses my precious, once in a lifetime recorded footage? How it never dies without warning? How it didn’t brick after four uses, and how I was unable to get a replacement because it was a month out of warranty? (Nope not bitter at all 😂) GoPro deserves its inevitable place in the Tupperware of history.
I like the features of the OA5 and I like the colors of the GP13. I'm not sure which one to buy for hiking and mvlogging. Your comment made me happy, how would I bring the OA5 colors closer to the GP13 colors? (I'm new to action cameras). Any explanatory video?
I’ve had GoPros since the Hero 3. I stopped buying them at the Hero 10 because not much changed model after model. With my videography starting to become more professional, DJI’s image just seemed to be a better pick. I have a Pocket 3 and Action 5 Pro coming in soon and I can’t wait to integrate them into my workflow.
I will never own, research or buy a go pro type device… but I watched every second of that Becca, thanks for making another great video! Love from 🏴
I have owned both the Action 4 and Hero 12. The DJI was such a good camera for just point and shoot. Low light worked well and the footage was stabilised. The mobile app was simple and fast to export videos onto my phone. Then I tried the GoPro. Had to manually update because it wouldn’t connect to my phone on 5ghz (13 mini) then low light stabilisation was just non existent which made me spend 2 hours testing every setting to find a balance between shutter speed and ISO to keep footage usable. Eventually got there in the end. You may be saying why not just stick with the DJI, it’s because superview on the GoPro look so good for karting compared to just Ultra wide on the DJI. But for most I’d say get the DJI. Amazing videos btw
Hi Becca, Thank you for your insightful comparison video. However, I believe two significant aspects may have been overlooked: The overheating issue associated with both cameras. The touch sensitivity of each camera; for instance, the Hero 12 exhibited considerable lag in touch response compared to the DJI 4. I hope you will consider addressing these issues in your future videos.
LOVE your presentation style and approach! Just subscribed. I've watched several Action 5 videos, and yours stands out in your approach of old vs new school. Well done. Keep up the great work!
For me the biggest selling point is the DJI mic 2 direction connection. Quality of that is still high and that changes a lot for us people using cameras in all year weather. No worries of open battery door now.
I continue to be frustrated by GoPro's refusal to upgrade their internal systems. I have the 9 and see no reason to upgrade unless there is a meaningful QoL difference. Thanks for the review!
I remember watching MKBHD when he first started out and nobody knew who he was. He rocketed to the top. I know you are not new to this Becca, but I see you following the same path. Keep it up, girl!
I like the oldschool way for the obvious reason that not everyone are tech nerds. Some people use these for B-roll in professional sets and fill in clips here and there with Gopro. Making major overhauling and changes will create uncertainties among people. Better leave the button where it has been for years. It is an understood workflow with this camera. Major changes in each iteration will just create confusion. As well as in the produced footage in the grading process. I like how you divide them into these segments. Keep it up! :)
First time watching one of your videos. Great job. Subbed! No one is really talking about it...yet... but I would bet the Gopro kills the DJI in cold weather performance. As a "go outside" aspect this is very important for winter activities.
Hey, great video! So happy to see you getting close to 100k so quickly! Tiny constructive comment: I had a bit of trouble following which footage came from which camera because you switched which camera was on the left/right when you went between the shots of the cameras and the footage taken by the cameras. I loved all the comparisons. You are great at framing the differences in clear terms.

Congrats on going off on your own and all your success thus far. It’s well deserved. Your content has always shone bright.
the reviews don't stop!! thank goodness for that. crazy to see how far the gopro has come while seeing the quality of life changes that a new-ish comer is able to provide. didn't realize how slow a gopro could seem when compared to how fast the dji A5 is!
0:06 that transition is sick!! 🔥
@@jamese4729 it sounds like there’s no way to turn off the hdr in the action 5 unfortunately
Totally refreshing review. I was tired of biased reviews and comparisons. Thanks. Have a good day.
Easily some of the best reviews on RUclips! So glad to see you continue your amazing work. ❤
Notification squad!! Thanks for the video. I didn't really watch the Verge before, but I've been loving your videos so far!
She’s indie now. Theverge threatened her with non-compete and she left as I understand it.
I think I like your videos so much because you review these products like I would do. So u hit all the right spots that I want to know about that certain tech. Thanks for ur video Becca!
I’ve just purchased and started using the Osmo Action 5 Pro. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. THANK YOU DJI❤️!!!!
Really happy to see these Becca videos pop up on my TL regularly now!
Such a fun and valuable video, with an amazing production. thanks Becca! 🫶
Love you and your work!
"Take tech outside" I love it. Subscribed!
Youve earned my sub, I think you are the only one to actually try and somewhat get exposure the same between the cameras in low light!
I've seen many reviews of both this products and comparison, but none were as good as yours. You seemed very onest and touch very important topics. Keep it up!
Watching from Brazil ❤ - very happy that you now have your own channel. Keep creating this amazing content, Becca!!!
Becca I struggle to decide if you're better at writing or editing because these videos are so simple in execution yet constantly keep me interested and leaving with a real sense of value. Wow :)
What a refreshing take on a tech video! Thank you
Another thing worth noting is the DJI Action can pair to DJI's excellent Mic that uses 32bit float audio.
Prefer the flat mode on GoPro because it grades better than DJI's D-Log M. But the Action 5 has 4k 4:3 120 fps using the entire sensor 3840x2880.
I love the rawness of your video without excessive back sound or video effect 🎉🎉🎉
I have watched all the Smart Devil screen protector videos and this is easily the Best One. I love the quality, I love the vibe, I love the explanation, great video bro.
Your videos are so comfy and fun to watch, I don't really care about action cameras but I couldn't stop watching. Keep it up bud!
you won my subscription, all dji issues can be fix with firmware (eg wb with nd filter coz its white balance sensor is outside the filter) while gopro limits coz of its aging processor and sensor tries to win you with its lens options. the a5 charges twice as fast as the GP13.
Love your style. Great review. The differences were really nicely demonstrated too. You’re killing it. ❤
Dude youre killin it! Proud of you!
Becca, big thanks for the detailed comparison! This really helped me make up my mind since I will be shooting in low light most of the time.
I’m now subscribed!
Siempre es un gusto enorme ver tus revisiones de productos, Becca.
Un abrazo y gracias por compartir desde Santiago de Chile (Latin-America).
Marcelo.
Thanks for the in-depth review. You really made my decision on what to buy for an action camera simple.
Jeez! 0:05 seconds into the video, and already a super slick video transition. Becca never disappoints! 🙂
I really appreciate Becca's approach to video reviews. When I watch other content creators I think "did they really get together for drinks for a review for B-roll or is this just their life?". Everything Becca films feels purposeful and has intention beyond brain rot. Keep it up!
Great footage and review. Really good conversational delivery too.
(Nope not bitter at all 😂)
GoPro deserves its inevitable place in the Tupperware of history.
I like the features of the OA5 and I like the colors of the GP13. I'm not sure which one to buy for hiking and mvlogging. Your comment made me happy, how would I bring the OA5 colors closer to the GP13 colors? (I'm new to action cameras). Any explanatory video?
Great video!
It's crazy how I preferred the gopro in the well lit scenes every single time but that low light performance is.. not.
Love from 🏴
Happy to be here for another episode of "Tech Outside".
Hi Becca,
Thank you for your insightful comparison video. However, I believe two significant aspects may have been overlooked:
The overheating issue associated with both cameras.
The touch sensitivity of each camera; for instance, the Hero 12 exhibited considerable lag in touch response compared to the DJI 4.
I hope you will consider addressing these issues in your future videos.
thank you for this review. Great work and great videos taken during every day conditions.
LOVE your presentation style and approach! Just subscribed. I've watched several Action 5 videos, and yours stands out in your approach of old vs new school. Well done. Keep up the great work!
great review and love how detailed the comparison is. more power!
Love this, other comparisons would steer you towards the new only but yours is well balanced and thoughtful of more than just the specs sheet. 😎
For me the biggest selling point is the DJI mic 2 direction connection. Quality of that is still high and that changes a lot for us people using cameras in all year weather. No worries of open battery door now.
Let's go more Becca videos 🎉
I continue to be frustrated by GoPro's refusal to upgrade their internal systems. I have the 9 and see no reason to upgrade unless there is a meaningful QoL difference.
Thanks for the review!
☝☝
8:7 sensor and 10bit is a good reason😉 the dji is the better choise tho😊
So glad seeing you running your own channel!! And that kitty!? Soooo cute ;)
This is a great comparison. Nice work here Becca!
As a "go outside" aspect this is very important for winter activities.
this is exactly the video i was searching for, thanks!
Exactly the review I was looking for, thanks. Subbed!
just found your channel. most excellent! Thank for your hard work!
Becca is THEE vibe!
Great job! I know your neighborhood well - I was born [1958] and raised in Manhattan. I worked at Bleecker & W Broadway supermarket in the early 1980s. I was one of managers there - your west village video brings back memories. It was the punk rock era when I worked there. After that job, I drove a NYC yellow cab during my computer science grad school in Manhattan. I've been shooting and filming since 1970 in Manhattan. Keep it up! You are doing an amazing job and I just subscribe. PS I went with Old School. Got my GoPro 13 two days ago. I did my research and stuck with GoPro, again. My 5th GoPro model.
Thanks Becca, for your awesome work and being you!
