One feature I like about the GoPro 12 and 13 is the ability to use a QRCode to set all cameras to the same timecode. I've used this with the Hero 10's as well (with the GoProLabs firmware). It makes multicam so much easier and I don't have to carry a timecode generator with me. There is a 3rd party software that does not get much exposure, called Multi-View HD Pro 2, which I use to preview instantly up to 8 GoPro videos simultaneously on the PC screen which automatically sync's to the GoPro metadata timecode.
With GoPro, I . So satrted out with the 3, the 3+, the 4 and 4+ and the 5. The 5 worked so well I did not upgrade again until 8 came out and it worked so well, I did not upgrade until the 11 came out. I use my 11 all the time and I'll probably upgrade when 14 comes out next year. So it seems to me every 3 years is how long it takes GoPro to make significant enough upgrades in order for me to justify upgrading. I admit over all the dji did win in most of the shots, but there were a few where GoPro crushed it. I try never to be a fanboy just as I think you are not a fanboy either.
Myself and another guy both bought action cameras before going to Tanzania to help with whale shark research. He had loads of issues with his GoPro. The battery life was poor, discharged quickly and even when not used it dropped power quickly. It was overheating a lot despite being used in the sea. Plus it let in water to the case and it fogged up the screens front and back. We were only snorkelling depth. He hadn’t heard of DJI camera but he wished he’d got a DJI camera instead. Again real world usage. People can bang on about bitrate all they want, but in real world conditions and being used specifically for what they were built for the GoPro had its arse handed to it. It seems the same is being shown in this video too. I don’t know why people can’t accept when they may have made a mistake in the camera they own, it’s not a sign of weakness to be proven wrong.

Hey Jake - I remember being in a live stream about a year ago when the Action 4 was released and I asked a couple of questions about it and at the time I determined to wait until the next release before upgrading my Action 3. I'm glad I waited because the specs are exactly what I was hoping DJI would put into the 5 Pro. My Action 5 Pro arrives in a couple of days 😃
This was a review based more on how I'd use these cameras. I'm always shooting in tricky lighting conditions. I think either camera is fine in its own way. I still use a GoPro 8 so what do I know. It would be nice to see the results using a polarizer on both cameras. I always use one on my GP8. It gives it that pop and there is no need for post-grading for my use of the footage.

Great comparison Jake! The consistent performance of the DJI Action 5 across all modes or environments is amazing! I noticed that the Action 5 did a great job of keeping your face exposed properly even in high dynamic scenes where you were backlit and your face in shadow which would be beneficial to vloggers. I would be interested in a similar comparison between the DJI Action 5 and the Insta360 Ace 2 Pro. Great work again in a beautiful real world environment.
I think the DR is much more in the Action 5, and the colour profile just seems richer than the GoPro. Totally agree in the ice cave the GoPro would blow out the highlights way more. I'd probably lean towards the Action 5 honestly.
I like my Action 3! Most of my footage is with that. I tend to record in 2.7K/30FPS so no matter which way up the camera is, then I can keep the footage level. I use it with a home made stick on wind muffler, and manage (most of the time) to get decent audio. I would like to be able to connect a mic via bluetooth though, and also have better performance in low light. I think a DJI Action 5, with a DJI Mic2 will be my next camera/audio investment. Thanks for your brilliant reviews.
I’ve had many generations of GoPro’s. Have many Dji drones and their mic’s even gimbals… However I still prefer the natural modes Color’s on the Gropro… There looked like GoPro had more dynamic range in its HLG mode and I’m assuming the Action5 pro was also matched with its settings but the sun looked less blown out in the GoPro’s clip. However in all it’s other modes yes the action 5 had more dynamic range. 2 main reasons why I’m leaning closer towards getting then action 5. Oled screen with the front being touch screen, and the depth and altitude sensor, I do a lot of flying and diving. If GoPro had these features I probably would of gone for it however I’m glad GPS is back. That’s my most unbiased opinion on which camera I’d choose. Wonder if you agree with me when it comes to the HLG footage?
Couple years ago I bought both GoPro 11 and DJI Action 3. I liked a lot of stuff about the DJI, like the mount system, size, etc but the image quality of the GoPro was miles ahead. Also they both overheated very fast, like 20 mins max. I decided to return both of them as neither seemed good enough. Now in this generation, the Action 5 seems like a clear winner in most scenarios since it has caught up to GoPro in the image quality and often it's even better. I still kinda prefer the warmer color of the GoPro but that's not enough to justify going for it. Also the Action 5 is bit cheaper...Maybe it's now good enough to be a keeper.
Thanks for the video and showing us your comparisons of the two Cameras. The action 5 looks better when it's on you than the GoPro. I like that GoPro seems to have improved on the overheating issue. My GoPro Black 8 heated up in a still room and was super hot and shutting off within 35 minutes. It never really overheated when I had it on my handle bars of my bike. It was always normal temperature to touch it durig a bike ride. When you walked into the the ice cave, the GoPro looked better when walking into the dark. When you got into the light, the Action 5 looked better. I guess I will have to watch your other video to see if you show how the action 5 is at night time in the dark or does it even get dark there? My GoPro Black 8 has a lot of bandaids on it but, still works okay even with a lanyard over it which protect it from a rainstorm. I almost lost the GoPro 8 from a light sprinkle when the button got exposed but, the lanyard has protected it from rain ever since. I am ready to get a new camera. The Action 5 is looking good!
First, what an awesome location for this video! 👍👍👍 however, I’m going against the grain and still prefer the look of the GoPro footage over DJI. Some great colors inside those ice caves! Those blues! ❤❤❤
@@JakeSloan I understand. I was curious and just did a video sample with the Action 3 with an ND8 on without changing the frame rate but rather left it in auto but locked in the color temp at 5400k for lit conditions and the footage looks as if I color graded the video. Footage came out beautiful with no highlights. I don't have physical access to upload footage of the GoPro with like an ND4 but the lower filters seem to help with blowouts in lit conditions from my experience
its incredible. some years ago GoPro was the Goat in the action camera market. nowadays Insta360 and DJI are rocking the field and Gopro has to catch up
I have a DJI Pocket 2 and a GoPro Hero 11. I have no bias for either camera or company. I don’t know much about bitrate or compression or any of that, I just bought either camera based on the features I wanted. I do not notice much difference in image quality in the two comparisons, the only difference I can see is with the colour, the Osmo 5 has better performance in low light, but I think the GoPro has better stabilisation. But I’m speaking as someone who has very limited knowledge, only basing my opinions on what I can see
To be honest and Hear me out... I feel like DJI Action 5 would be better in colder places and conditions, It has that sort of blue tinge to it and with the GoPro I think it's better in sunny places like Hawaii or Australia... I really feel like that's the ultimate thing...
Unless you use the log modes and just color the way you like in post, but of course if you need to do very fast turn around with no color grading or just don't want to bother with it this is true
The GoPro is clearly superior in bright light. Which is what I need. The A5 has some weird coloring too. It's like it doesn't know what the color green is. For me the GP is still the king.
@myworldmivida4977 It definitely has a blue tint. Just like my DJI drone. When I mix drone footage with my GP12 footage there is a huge difference. I personally like the bright colors of the GP better but that's just my taste.
I haven't seen any reviewers mentioning that DJI A5P supports up to 1TB memory which is pretty massive, but the question I have is: can the internal memory be set up to kick in automatically when the card is full? And thanks for the comparison 👍
That's better! lol. Action 5 looks good, but I heard the 4k bitrate is only 60Mb/s. Seems like you'd get artifacts around fast moving objects at that rate...
@@JasonQuinnexactly. People clinging on to bitrate. Majority don’t know what difference it makes, plus as you’ve said. You only need to watch the video above to see that it’s irrelevant in real world. That’s just something on paper. Not sure why they seem to get so upset that another company has come along and beaten GoPro at their own game. Free to buy what you want with your own money but don’t try and convince others you’re right when anyone with working eyes can see the DJI camera is better in the videos above. It’s not a sign of weakness to accept when you’re wrong.
Are both of those cameras able to recharge while recording and will they both run with the camera battery removed if an external battery is plugged in? Excellent video and I appreciate all the work you did?
only few clips from gopro looks for me better, but get a big warmer colors is not a problem, but good dynamic range will be always look better than this fake "hdr" look . very good comparison, thank you.
Jake I think it's DJI by a mile. GoPro always has bugs in some aspect it seems. I switch over a couple years ago and have never looked back. Ive never had an issue with the Action 4 that I currently have. Also I think the colors and footage look much better on the Action 4. Great Comparison!
@jake sloan thanks for the detailed review. If it werent for your eye opening video...i would have just bought a product for its name and with out doing much of research.Your detailed video highlighted critical aspects a novice ought to consider before making any purchase. Thanks to you I could make the right choice.
Please make more videos with some of your video settings for Action 5, indoor and outdoor filming Specifically if you use auto exposure or manual. Same for white balance. Also, do you increase/decrease the noise and sharpness? I think there are a few other settings to choose from. Other than the 4K , 16:9 / 4:3 and the 30 / 60 fps.
Random question Jack...It seems like you're constantly tromping through water and snow so do you wear water proof socks or what kind of boots do you wear? Great comparison by the way 👍
What really baffles me is how on earth are you able to talk into a camera and make a video and not getting blown away by these gorgeous views?! I'd be stunned and unable to say a single word.
what a place to test them.. at the end I would take the Action 5 just because I love the DJI stuff more lately.. though I wish GPS would be native on these.
A new battery, GoPro has lost it. I love your reviews, So well put together and very informative. Benefitting from your work all the way from Pakistan.
Great video👍. Do you believe, low light videos are an important feature for an action cam? Or is it only a sales feature not used in real life? Are low light videos mainly made with a smart phone in reality, which is probably the better choice in the dark.
DJI has the best customer service. I just got a replacement Air 3 with the Refresh Program. I got a call from DJI asking how the first flight test went. WOW, no company has ever done that before.
Thanks for the vid. For me, reliability is key - and you’re probably not surprised to hear that I’m at the end of my patience with the GoPro 🤬 which would you say has better reliability? GoPro or DJI?
Good video.I like the side-by-side comparations. I appreciate the clarification upfront as to how the cameras were obtained. The one thing I am skeptical about is that there is nothing about GoPro 13 that is even slightly better, and there are not any imperfections to the DJI, it gives the video a feel that is it a DJI promo comparison video. Plus, free vs purchased will rise the expectations for the GoPro because it was purchased. DJI makes high quality products, but nothing is ever flawless. I have a DJI Air 3 and like the solid quality and functionality of the drone. I have an insta360 X3 and it is a good 360 camera. I am considering an action camera and interested in how the Insta360 Ace Pro compares to the two cameras in this video.
Bs. If you watched the video there are several areas where I say GoPro is better. Ie gopro stabilizes in slow motion where the action 5 does not. The reason I put this stuff side by side is for you to decide. Everyone has preferences on colors and use cases. I am waiting to buy an Ace Pro 2 to compare them all
I've been doing multi cam edits and recently learned that with go pros you can have them time sync from a QR code. Does this new go pro have that capability? Does the DJI do it? Thanks for the great video, you put a lot of work into it!
Nice review, DJI hands down a better camera, i can see Go Pro sales going downhill along with their share price. Seen video comparisons at nighttime in the city streets, Action 5 a much better camera
I have the Action 4 and like it very much. I'm a bit worried about the reduced bitrate of the Action 5. There are mountain bike videos out there, where fast moving parts of the image show strange artifacts. Not sure if this has to do with the bitrate or even RUclips. However I do not notice this with the Action 4.
@@17cream I asked someone, they said shooting in DLog M gives better results. But I haven't bought it yet so I can't verify it. Dang, I thought I'd buy it the first day, but now it's getting confusing!
Thanks for the great comparison. I am concerned that many people are ignoring the detail in the video quality. For example, in the clip at 3:17, Action 5 has crushed the detail in the hard shell. Yet the rocks in the background are over-sharpened, which messes up the perspective. Overall, the Action 5 footage is unnatural. GoPro has many things to improve, such as dynamic range, chipset heat generation and processes, but I think everyone should be more concerned about the fundamentals of video.
Action 5 Looks better in most of the footage. Especially with high contrast. The dynamic range does really well.
What about the difference about the bitrate between them?

I want to see an Ace Pro low light comparison. Everyone already knows it's better than the GoPro.
Me too I’m hopefully buying an ace pro 2 when it comes out to compare
Well made video! DJI is definitely ahead of the game when it comes to these cameras.
Totally agree!
Action 5 is better in many ways, not to mention it is $50 dollar cheaper.
100%
Does it have 5.3k60fps?
@@octnyuseless Compared to the gopro's sensor size
Thanks, Jake. Well done! DJI is doing amazing things and GoPro (never) not so much.
Totally agree!
Nice!!
First, what an awesome location for this video! 👍👍👍 however, I’m going against the grain and still prefer the look of the GoPro footage over DJI. Some great colors inside those ice caves! Those blues! ❤❤❤
there you go!
What if you use a CPL filter on the GoPro to deal with the highlights?
For some reason I am still favoring gopro's lighting in the lit situations.
You can. I typically don’t use any filters on action cameras
Can’t wait to get my hands on the action 5! I have two action 4s
Nice!!
Absolutely great comparison. Dji seems to be the way to go.
Thank you
its incredible. some years ago GoPro was the Goat in the action camera market.
nowadays Insta360 and DJI are rocking the field and Gopro has to catch up
yeah pretty crazy. I hope GoPro releases something to help them get back
Based on your review I'm going to upgrade to the osmo 5.
Nice
I have a DJI Pocket 2 and a GoPro Hero 11. I have no bias for either camera or company. I don’t know much about bitrate or compression or any of that, I just bought either camera based on the features I wanted. I do not notice much difference in image quality in the two comparisons, the only difference I can see is with the colour, the Osmo 5 has better performance in low light, but I think the GoPro has better stabilisation. But I’m speaking as someone who has very limited knowledge, only basing my opinions on what I can see
I think you have made excellent observations!
To be honest and Hear me out... I feel like DJI Action 5 would be better in colder places and conditions, It has that sort of blue tinge to it and with the GoPro I think it's better in sunny places like Hawaii or Australia... I really feel like that's the ultimate thing...
thats a really great point
Unless you use the log modes and just color the way you like in post, but of course if you need to do very fast turn around with no color grading or just don't want to bother with it this is true
The GoPro is clearly superior in bright light. Which is what I need.
The A5 has some weird coloring too. It's like it doesn't know what the color green is.
For me the GP is still the king.
That's what is putting me off the most with the action 5, the colour just seems better on gp, I hate the blue tint it has
@myworldmivida4977 It definitely has a blue tint. Just like my DJI drone. When I mix drone footage with my GP12 footage there is a huge difference. I personally like the bright colors of the GP better but that's just my taste.
Great review Jake as always.
Thank you! I've been loving your videos on the R5II and I have been loving using canon again with my own r5II lol
@@JakeSloan Thanks. It's a great upgrade from the R5. Looking forward to your vids upcoming on it. Now I gotta buy this stupid Action 5.....lol
The detail the the action 5 is deffo noticeable. Glad i held out for the 5
Yep
Great comparison, and great places, as well !
Thanks a lot!
6:00 is crazy. Super cool footage and clearly difference :)
agreed and thanks!
I haven't seen any reviewers mentioning that DJI A5P supports up to 1TB memory which is pretty massive, but the question I have is: can the internal memory be set up to kick in automatically when the card is full?
And thanks for the comparison 👍
I think the GoPros also support one terabyte memory.
I never use larger cards than 128 because of the risk I put these cameras in. I couldn’t bear to loose much footage lol
One of the best comparisons I’ve seen on RUclips 🙌
Thank you Eddie!!
Oh come on, got to do the polar plunge. Great review as always.
ROFL. Um NO 😂
That's better! lol. Action 5 looks good, but I heard the 4k bitrate is only 60Mb/s. Seems like you'd get artifacts around fast moving objects at that rate...
lol good catch!
But what looks better in the final video? To me it is pretty clear so far.
Thanks for the kind words and both will recharge while on but I haven’t tested them without batteries in
Glad I switched to Dji After owning hero 5 black.
I have been super happy with the action series
Thanks for the review! I was asking myself this question the other day!
glad it helped
and MAN Your voice sounds EXACTLY like Kermit the Frog + Sam Rockwell... It's actually mind blowing, I love it Hahaha!
rofl thats a first for me
not as Bad as DC rain makers
Thanks…now I can’t unhear it 😂😂😂
@@NCOUTDOORS1960 SAME!!! HAHA! It's so good!!
And he looks like David Morse.
only few clips from gopro looks for me better, but get a big warmer colors is not a problem, but good dynamic range will be always look better than this fake "hdr" look . very good comparison, thank you.
You’re welcome
amazing how quickly DJI has overtaken the (former) industry leader
Yep
Jake I think it's DJI by a mile. GoPro always has bugs in some aspect it seems. I switch over a couple years ago and have never looked back. Ive never had an issue with the Action 4 that I currently have. Also I think the colors and footage look much better on the Action 4. Great Comparison!
Thanks! and I agree
Are you able to connect an external battery?
@@YOU_GOT_SHOOK as long as it’s usb c should work fine!
Very useful and detailed comparison, thanks a lot
Glad it was helpful!
Good comparison video Jake
Thanks Lyn
@jake sloan thanks for the detailed review. If it werent for your eye opening video...i would have just bought a product for its name and with out doing much of research.Your detailed video highlighted critical aspects a novice ought to consider before making any purchase. Thanks to you I could make the right choice.
I am so glad it helped
Please make more videos with some of your video settings for Action 5, indoor and outdoor filming Specifically if you use auto exposure or manual. Same for white balance. Also, do you increase/decrease the noise and sharpness? I think there are a few other settings to choose from. Other than the 4K , 16:9 / 4:3 and the 30 / 60 fps.
will do
Random question Jack...It seems like you're constantly tromping through water and snow so do you wear water proof socks or what kind of boots do you wear? Great comparison by the way
👍
I wear waterproof boots but many times my feet come back soaked anyway. I always keep dry socks and shoes in my car
The osmo action 5 pro is amazing 😮🎉
Agreed
Ive been a gopro fan my whole life, but I think the Action 5 wins....I love DJI drones and I might start using them with Action cameras as well
Then they will match up very well!
The review that was needed ❤❤❤
Thank you
What really baffles me is how on earth are you able to talk into a camera and make a video and not getting blown away by these gorgeous views?! I'd be stunned and unable to say a single word.
Oh I do spend quite a bit of time enjoying the views and MANY times I come back having completely forgotten to record parts of the video lol
@@JakeSloan Oh, I have no doubt you do and I didn't mean my comment in a negative way. Sorry if it came out like that.
what a place to test them.. at the end I would take the Action 5 just because I love the DJI stuff more lately.. though I wish GPS would be native on these.
agreed
took abt 1/2 second to know youre in whittier, alaska and that may be a hike up blackstone bay vista.
yep anyone who has been down in that area will recognize the tunnel pretty quick
A new battery, GoPro has lost it. I love your reviews, So well put together and very informative. Benefitting from your work all the way from Pakistan.
Thanks!
Great review, thanks. I've ordered an Action 5 to compliment my Pocket 3. Can I ask? Why did you go to 60 FPS in the cave?
I know it makes no sense lol low light and all, but 60fps stabilizes MUCH better in lowlight
Great video👍. Do you believe, low light videos are an important feature for an action cam? Or is it only a sales feature not used in real life? Are low light videos mainly made with a smart phone in reality, which is probably the better choice in the dark.
I use the lowlight often living this far north in the winter. I’ve also used it when working in the 48 states in cities at night.
Where did you film this? Looks cool!
this was filmed in the mountains above Whittier Alaska
Jake, very good review, I prefer DJI Osmo Action 5 pro, greeting from Chile 🇨🇱.
thank you!
Action 5 looks best to me 😊❤
me too
Thanks for the in-depth review.
My pleasure!
DJI has the best customer service. I just got a replacement Air 3 with the Refresh Program. I got a call from DJI asking how the first flight test went. WOW, no company has ever done that before.
Agreed 100%
@@JakeSloan GoPro just says: Comeback at opening times.
Thanks for the vid. For me, reliability is key - and you’re probably not surprised to hear that I’m at the end of my patience with the GoPro 🤬 which would you say has better reliability? GoPro or DJI?
In my experience the DJI products have been amazing
@@JakeSloan thanks. I’ll try my luck with DJI next then.
Action 5 entered the game and has ran with it leaving GoPro behind by at least a mile
agreed
I am waiting to buy an Ace Pro 2 to compare them all
@@JakeSloan I was being constructive in providing feedback. But, Ok I can unsubscribe and take back my thumbs up.
I've been doing multi cam edits and recently learned that with go pros you can have them time sync from a QR code.
Does this new go pro have that capability?
Does the DJI do it?
Thanks for the great video, you put a lot of work into it!
You can jam sync time code with the action series (4&5) via the usb c port. I’ve done it and it works great
@@JakeSloan
Great news.
Thanks Jake!
Thanks for the detailed comparison.
Is there a problem with the DJI in harsh light? In some reviews it looks Like the skin becomes really flat.!?
I think that can happen if you aren't filming in DLog more
Nice review, DJI hands down a better camera, i can see Go Pro sales going downhill along with their share price. Seen video comparisons at nighttime in the city streets, Action 5 a much better camera
Yeah they need to innovate
I have the Action 4 and like it very much. I'm a bit worried about the reduced bitrate of the Action 5. There are mountain bike videos out there, where fast moving parts of the image show strange artifacts. Not sure if this has to do with the bitrate or even RUclips. However I do not notice this with the Action 4.
yeah that is concerning, and I really hope they change this via firmware
What happened to the DJI Action 5 Pro affiliate link?
If you do fix it, put a line or two between then so each is more easily selectable.
Got it! Good catch!!
jargons aside, the A5P is producing visibly better result in nearly all cases under all types of conditions
agreed
curious, how safe are those ice caverns that you're wading through?
If you have decades of mountaineering experience like I do then safe. But otherwise always go with an experienced guide.
@JakeSloan, may I ask can you share those locations that you shoot in this review video? Looks so beautiful. Thank you
It's game over for gopro!
Kind of seems that way
I think DJI is better if shot in dlog m, the normal colour profile isn't good as OA 4 or GoPro
agreed
I suspect it’s the lower bit rate on the OA5
@@17cream yes absolutely, the complex situations like grass, trees in low light , bushes are smudged together. No details.
@@BestToWonder does this improve in D-log? I believe higher fps increases bit rate from 60mb to 80/100
@@17cream I asked someone, they said shooting in DLog M gives better results. But I haven't bought it yet so I can't verify it. Dang, I thought I'd buy it the first day, but now it's getting confusing!

Thank you for the comparison.
Welcome!
sharper does not matter better in terms of movie - gopro has more pleasant, film look to me. Thank you for the test
you're welcome
Hi Jack, great work! I'd love to learn more about camera filters. Can you give me some details?
Sure thing! I have some videos on the channel about ND filters
Totally agree. The over-sharpening and unnatural exposure treatment are what is keeping me from immediately buying an Action 5.
This is why I put stuff side by side so you can decide which works better for you
Awesome review , Thanks👍👏
Thanks for watching!
