This camera does not deserve the "pro" marker in my opinion for the following reasons: - Color profile is directed towards the 'average consumer' who only cares that the image is bright and colorful. - Bitrate on this camera is HALF the bitrate of the Osmo Action 4. - Promised "HDR" comes with processing not actual sensor dynamic range so it's misleading at best. - SuperNight footage is slightly better but oversharpened. Do I recommend this camera: No. Not with this current software. Buy the 4 if you agree and save some cash. I feel this is a mic drop moment as PetaPixel agrees with me on the 5 pro normal profile: ruclips.net/video/n-eWOyk-800/видео.htmlsi=zP5JJoKBb4GAxY77&t=314 ps. This is not me hating on DJI I have 4 DJI cameras and 2 drones myself. But this is a BAD direction they are taking and I truly hope they will step back and fix this trickery. At least give us some more options in settings.
A few things. The bitrate isn't half. The bitrate will vary depending on what is happening on screen. If you examine any GoPro footage taken even in the high bitrate setting, it will often show as around 60Mbit/s. 120Mbit/s on the GoPro is the maximum (without the Labs firmware), but it isn't a constant bitrate for every recording. Same with the DJI Action 5. DJI actually only reduced the maximum to 100Mbit/s. But, now DJI has issued an update that adds a higher overall bitrate option (which has also tuned the SuperNight mode a bit better as well). You say that the colour profile is directed towards consumers. Not really true. The D-Log M mode in 10-bit is aimed at those who need to grade, and will be beyond most consumers. The new sensor *is* capable of more dynamic range, all of which can be accessed by using the D-Log M mode. The true HDR mode on it is HLG, which is an industry standard for displaying straight to HDR televisions and displays (it isn't designed for grading). What you are referring to in the video isn't really "HDR" so much as 'tone mapping', which is what all the action cameras are doing now. Tone mapping attempts to cram the higher dynamic range the sensor produces into something an SDR monitor can show without the need for grading, and the result is something that yes, does look a bit fake. But that's just the physics of trying to cram that dynamic range while keeping a saturated looking image into a ready to use SDR recording. The only way to record the full dynamic range without tone mapping is with Log mode, which needs grading, or with the HLG mode. I do think that it would be good if DJI offered the option to switch the tone mapping off. The HERO13's tone mapping is way harsher though, as is the Ace Pro! But, that's why I use D-Log M for all my shooting, because I want to be in control of the output. If you don't want to grade, you can still record in D-Log M and just apply the official DJI D-Log M LUT. Or, if you use the MIMO app, just apply the Log Recovery mode to your clips in the edit. The new 4nm processor makes a huge difference to battery life. Battery life is one of the main limiting factors with action cameras, and this changes the game totally. I test recorded 4K footage with ReelSteady turned on and I got 2hr 40 minutes or so of continuous recording, and the camera was only lukewarm to the touch.
You are right I also ordered action 5 but I canceled it and ordered action 4. I was very convinced for action 5 for night mode and 2 mic connectivity. Sorry for making comment section a discussion forum 😅
Great video! I'm pretty sure most of the things you complained in this video can be sorted out by an firmware update. After using Drift Ghost S for almost a decade and had 2 crashes having the unlucky timing of battery dying a few minutes right before my accidents, I'm deffenetly choosing Osmo Action 5. I want to buy mine next week, OA4 is half the price of OA5 with adv combo pack but im still going for the latter for better battery life, and better low light performance.
Every other sponsored reviewer just glorifies this overprocessed garbage and never even show action footage, just themselves walking along a footpath... thanks for this honest comparison
Sadly most reviewers are sponsored and even those who say they are not still got the camera for free in many cases. To me this is still a sponsorship. I buy my own grear and If I get something as a freebie I always disclose it as a sponsorship. Its a sad affair how these things get so affected by money.
am i the only one who still likes the old rich dramatic yet truer to life look vis a vis the clean bright cartoon plastic world or high res game graphics look of the OA5pro? 😮😢
You are not alone 😁 Many people like the colorized hdr look. I just prefer the closer to real life look myself. I think this is a bit of trickery and marketing on DJI's part to go so hard with the effect.
OA4 doesn't need to be perfect to be more true to life compared to the new camera. Many reviewers also don't consider that a lot of people use the new and old camera in the same shoots. With the normal color profile this is not going to look very nice as the processing changes with camera angles SO MUCH. I need to start shooting in D-Log with all my dji cameras because the new one looks so different in the standard color profile.
Thank you for the detailed and unbiased review. I fully agree that DJI is way, way, way overcooking the HDR look. The sharpness + overdone HDR processing make the footage look cheap
Regards from Croatia. Small fellow moto chanel here :). Finally someone with honest takes about the camera. It is really hard to find anything honest with so much sponosord reviews or the ones who are not sponsored but get everything free. From the first time I've seen the image on Action 5 I thought it was terrible.....too artificial, HDR look, with low bitrate and artifacts. I was amazed that no one did not mention that in the " reviews" . As a longtime user of DJI products for my professional work in photo and video ( gimbals, drones ) I can with 100% facts say that I always feel like a Beta tester with DJI products because they launch stuff with so many bugs and problems every time. It is a multi billion dollar company and they don't care at all. The good thing is that they fix and upgrade some of the stuff in the firmware updates, but you have to wait at least 5-6 months. I am planing to switch from GoPro for my moto volg so I am hoping that they will fix all the issues in the firmware. Cheers!
@@ayamotoadventures fully agree! The updates are nice and sometimes they listen to people complaining 😄 I usually have just shot everything in normal color modes on dji cameras but the new cam forced me to switch to shooting d-log in all of them so I can get close to the same colors from all dji cameras I use. Its crazy how they cant get the colors even near the same after each release. Differences are insanely huge.
Thank you for this. It's a relief to see that D-Log disables the super artificial enhancements added in normal mode. I consider the normal mode look unusable. D-Log looks great though.
Video quality out of the 3 is in many ways better than either one of the newest cameras. I prefer the normal mode colors on the 3 to even the 4 and definitely to the 5 pro. I still use my OA 3 on a weekly basis ✌️ Great camera but the wireless mic support has steered me to use the newer ones as my main camera.
A motovlogger here in Scotland and still on my OA3 as it stands. I really expected the 5 to blow me away , for what it has overall I may eventually get it or a 4 as I love the Osmo range , having had original and the 3. Time will tell. Thanks for this comparison. RSMF
I agree there’s issues living up to the marketing. DJI achieved a few significant improvements in the OA4 with firmware updates, the OA5 should improve overtime. I had issues with the OA4 maintaining a level horizon when rigged to a motor vehicle. I’d love to see a stabilization comparison of the two cameras.
@@PatchedBanditIsn’t the osmo 3 suposed to be wireless mic ready? And how is your experience with ND-filters since many people talk about the strange blurry effects, looking to buy a second hand cheap action 3. Thank you
@@cornelgr Osmo action 3 works with the dj wireless mics, but not without a receiver. This is where the 4 and 5 are different, which connect the transmitter directly to the camera through blue tooth. Downside of needing a receiver attached to the camera is losing the waterproof qualities.
Good comparison. Especially highlighting specifics on certain scenes for comparison. I wish more people would do that. However I find the 5 pro seems sharper and has a more pleasing image. But if I owned the 4, I see no reason to upgrade.
The Osmo 5 night shots remind me of the tunings dashcams have been doing in the last few years. Same idea, they have the same sensor as before, but the newer cameras are pulling various tricks to increase edge detection, do better with colour picking and more. I would not be surprised if they have a tiny AI algo doing "sensor optimization".
Dji has a better battery, better night filming, doesn't over heat /crash .Active tracking, under water pressure, plus depth reading 20m without a case . Gopro is a dying company look at the stock market.
I am very thankful for this video. I already wanted to get a DJI OA4 but still decided to wait for the OA5P to drop. I currently have a Hero 7 and I've had enough...I need a reliable cam with good quality. My friend got the new one and was very pleased by the new one. I still was sceptical but you actually gave me the exact answer to my concerns. Thank you for that. I really like the fact, that you can use your old and new peripherals for each cam. The Batteries in the new one are no Joke Thx Mate :)
thanks for the review! In my opinion, I like how the OA five looks, but I understand why many people like the OA four. The one thing that’s drawing me towards the five is that it has a longer battery life and the D log looks very good. I can probably fix that in post anyways. Thanks for the review and I’m glad you’re being honest about the camera.
@PatchedBandit great video, I really appreciate it when content creators take the time to make unbiased and indepth videos. I understand that these videos takes more time, effort and skill to create but the results are worth it. Keep up the good work. I am both Insta360 and DJI user (more so DJI), I can't wait for your Insta360 Pro2 vs the rest video.
Thanks. For obvious reasons these camera brands don't send me any free stuff so that video might never come 😅 3 actioncams on the regular use is enough for now.. my budjet can't take any more hits like this 😂✌️
Great video and comparison thank you for the video.I am in the hunt for either one of these and I am certainly leaning toward the 4 after watching this....I am not a pro by any means, but I do know what I like and and the 4 in my vision just looks more natural and I like the warmer colors. Sure there were parts that the 5 looked a little better but I am just a regular fella who like's to shoot stuff and the 4 it is for me.Paying the extra for a 5 certainly for me anyway would be a waste of money, plus I'm into bikes as well and really liked the very knowledgeable, straight talking and in-depth way everything was explained.....Sub'ed and thanks again.
Thank you for this honest review! For me the dlog m part was the most interesting one. In the first shots it was really like 90% the same only maybe at 7:32 the part around the sun is even correctly exposed on the new cam but that's pretty much it lol Could you record some bits with fixed settings? I mean like 180degree shutter rule, ND filter and then both at the same iso in different scenes if one then can count with more DR? I guess it will be basically the same miniscule but still I'd be interested. Other than that another disappointing year then. Still rocking the GoPro 11 and don't have a feeling that there hasn't been real progress after that one
I don't know, After using the action 5 everythng looks like what you actually see in real life. With the new firmware update, everything seems to look better, including supernight. But I really appreciate your honest review!
Every time I start thinking about upgrading to the 5 from my 4 I find videos like this to help me not do it. Although the 4 dropping audio on the Mic 2 is driving me nuts... I have to go back to using my boom mic on my 4 just to have a better video image.
The OA4 looks more natural and it all comes down to how someone would like to approach camera settings and post production. And most of the new products are so over hyped just to sell products every year. I feel tech upgrades should be done every 2 years especially with being able to do firmware upgrades through apps and the internet.
Thanks for your conclusive test. I'm still very happy with the Osmo Action 3 you recommended. Back from Northeast Italy on the CRF. Nice little bike as you perfectly know. All the best, Günter/Nürnberg
Upgraded from the action 3. no complaining here, love the 10 bit, I also love the hdr look in auto, and I can switch it off whenever I want.... I think the action 4 was a mistake.
Nice compare! And there is no way to tweak amount of the HDR effect in the normal color in the OA5? So bad and unnatural look, when HDR is boosted on "all money".
Most of my shoots are multi camera shoots with OA 3, OA 4, OA 5 pro and pocket 3. Because there is such a HUGE difference between rendering the normal color modes on the new camera I need to start shooting D-Log M on all of my cameras. Every other DJI product before this has been rendering the scene very naturally in the normal profile but that has changed with the new release.
With D-Log both look great. As the OA5 standard profile is so overdone I need to revert to shooting in D-Log with all my cameras to get similar results with all my camera angles. Not a big deal but before the OA5pro I didn't need to do this as other DJI products look very good with the normal profile.
It's my first time buying an action cam, and I'm thinking about between 4 and 5. Actually, I'm more attracted to 4. Do you have any recommendations? I'm going to buy it for travel for vlogs
If you can live with single wireless microphone and don't see much benefit in having 2 wireless mics connected then the 4 is pretty much the same camera. Only big benefit I see on the 5 pro is the dual wireless mic support. This is something I tend to utilize a lot in my motovlogs as I need the engine sound on a separate track.
- Record in lower FPS - Lower Resolution - Or low bitrate mode Probably the only things that work unfortunately. Haven't had this issue when I'm riding but you are probably recording indoors and the camera is stationary? Or just in hot climate?
Very honest review I also have both dji cameras and my observation is very similar. I'm currently working on my comparison Video, with minor adjustments on action 5 you can lower the ev value along with few other minor adjustments you'll get quite impressive footage
I don’t think you can simply process it to match, especially super night mode. In testing the cameras now, and it’s pretty clear that the action 5 does beat out the 4 handily in low light, like easily, but there are some quirks.
Yeah, same. Wanted to switch from 4 to 5, but dont want to anymore. 5 is sharper, but the image looks way overprocessed. And in log almost no difference. Gonna wait for 6 or 7.
The main thing I like on the 5 vs 4 is low light if you saw some of my latest videos it was filmed on the action 4 in a low light or poor lighting shop. I tried a couple cameras out over the last year and the 4 was the best sound with the microphone with noise cancellation which I really needed but probably the middle with low light which I kinda don’t like it’s a shame my action 4 is only like 5 months old but the 5 is looking good. Wonder if I can edit lighting on my 4 to make my low light videos look better thanks for the video 👍
Thanks for this video! All the info I really wanted. I have been considering the DJI to replace my GoPro 12 for low light issues, but honestly in every video I have seen comparing the GoPro and the Osmo (or the Insta cameras) the GoPro is better colour hands down. As you say, the heavy handed HDR from the Osmo is terrible. It murders skin tones - and pretty much any mid range colours. I also have observed that the Osmo is always red shifted. But, I was heartened to see that using the Log mode can deal with that issue. Now that I have watched this video, I think I will get an Osmo 4 because I don't see a advantage worth the price for the 5 and the mid range tones are clearly better on the 4.
Question, if the price difference it's only about 15 euros, it's worth buying the action 5 and hope for new updates that's gonna improve the camera in time? Or buy the action 4 and save that 15 euros?
DJI's own store has an -18% discount on the Action 4 at the moment though and even the starting price is lower. OA 4 279 € and OA 5 pro at 389 €. If you don't benefit a lot from the dual wireless mic support I would go with the 4. With 15e difference if you are ok shooting in D-Log or don't mind the colors on the base profile I would go for the 5 pro.
True and even at night kinda need to pixel peep to see an improvement. Very minor change from what I assume is the ISO boost and improved noise removal.
Thanks for the video! Im looking for my first action cam to use on motorcycle and your video helped me a lot. After action 5 pro release we can find cheap action 4 adventure combo, higher dynamic range is only postprocesing trick so its not worth to pay extra 150 euro for slightly bigger battery and screen.
perfect video. Amazinlgy explained. I dont care what your analysis is but the video you made is enough for me to decide whether to buy or not. There is no doubt insta Ace pro 2 is a amazing camera with superb image quality but i will buy Action 5pro for it compactness. Who cares about the night mode is good or bad, i just want the content to be in the video and the dlog mode is same in 4 and 5, that is enough for me. Thanks for the video once again.
Im in somewhat of a dilemma, my Action 4 is defective now im not sure what to replace it with. I heard rumors the 5 firmware updates are coming? Great comparison!😊
I'm happy with the OA 5 Pro in D-Log M. It's a nice camera even though in my eyes DJI is ruining the normal color profile with this dynamic range trickery.
Good tests. I had no action cam so I went straight with Action5. I am happy with the battery endurance as I need it during my long runs. I would prefer more stable exposure though. The sky changes almost every step. Maybe some parameters can be changed to compensate for that.
I am planning to buy a filter to osmo action 5 (what I don't have yet). If the original lens cover is removed, is the camera still waterproof? Or does the lens cover do the waterproofing? I am afraid of the filter leaking
10:03 the only thing that bothers me is the weird cone shape lens flare they produce from either the street lights or the sun on both the action 4 and 5.
Thanks for the interesting video. I use the 4 and I am very happy with it. It’s easy to work with the footage in post to get the look I like. The 5 has brighter colours and I think DJI are marketing it to the new user who doesn’t want to do a lot of colour work in post. In D-Log M I think I prefer the 5 but the difference is minimal. Save your money and buy the 4. Ride safe!
Only reason I see to pay more for the 5 pro is if you need dual mics. 4 = Single Wireless mic support 5 pro = Dual Wireless mic support Bigger batteries on the 5 pro but the new battery works with the older 3 and 4 cameras too so that's not really a good reason either. 5 pro promised battery life also happens only if you are in low bitrate 1080p mode.. this is not even an option on the 4 as it's always in the high bitrate mode which explains a lot of the battery life difference.
That's a very nice comparison! Did you also try what's the actual recording time impact between the old and new batteries? DJI says that it's more to hardware changes, than just the battery, but how much so?
I haven't tested the recording times. The old battery was 1770mAh and the new one is 1950mAh. I'm pretty sure most of it is due to the bigger battery. New 1950 batteries work with Osmo Action 4 too.
@@PatchedBandit That is exactly the question I was wondering. If one was to stick the new battery in to the old camera, how close would the recording time be to the new cameras recording time.
Great content, thank you this. But i loved of you had tested both cameras without their night modes enabled. Many testers say the night mode on the oa4 is worse if you do your own settings+dlog.
It surely is. This is why I left it out all together and gave the OA 4 the best chance to keep up with the new one. It didnt do that well even on night mode so I thought it's no use me testing it in all modes if it was defeated even with night mode. I never liked the OA 4 night mode personally. That was the year DJI tricked us in to buying the "big sensor" and then they just slowed the shutterspeed so much that everything got blurry in action scenes. ruclips.net/video/rpq5qS4B02M/видео.html I wish DJI would give an option to lower the sharpness in night mode on the new camera.
Thanks for this video, I'm a bit disappointed in the OA5 as well. The overly processed HDR fake look of the 5 is a big distraction for me. None of the other videos I've seen really mention this and just seem to talk about how good the OA5 is, which definitely makes them seem "sponsored." Hopefully DJI can fix the look of the 5 with a firmware update. Until then, thanks for saving me money! 👍🏻👍🏻
I hope they fix this later too. I've seen a LOT of sponsored videos and other thing is many reviewers just review the D-Log footage that is professionally graded for the reviews. I want to give the straight answer how the footage looks straight from camera as most of us motovloggers don't want to do anything fancy in the edit. Some people like the fake look but I'm not one of them.
I don’t like the low light noise and jitter of the 5. Save your money and buy the 4. Ride safe!
I don‘t know if you say it like this, you opened my eyes. I think in low Light th OA5 is Better but i only want to Film my skiing an i don’t Ski at Night so the OA4 is my Choice Now
@@PatchedBandit okay that is cool and apperently this is the only Video Where the OA4 is Better but Now i have to consider whether Business it with care refresh or without. In total with so Card it would cost 489€ with care refresh and without 454€ because the so Card which is recommended costs 54€ 512gb. So that is the question. I Chose the Bikining combo cause i don’t Ski with the Stick and When i use the chest Mount it should work Better.
Helmet audio is recorded with a lav mic connected to dji wireless mic 2. Mic is wirelessly connected to the action 5 pro. In my setup -12db gain works well but it depends on mic location and model.
It's possible but the OA 4 footage starts to look quite muddy and detail is not at the same level if you try to do it in post processing. Here's some quick samples: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1xWRpwAASn-n1wSTcw4sk5ioywlkzHFt2?usp=sharing One could try to make the exposure brighter straight in camera raising the exposure but I don't think it's going to win against the new camera with the boosted ISO and new cleaning algorithm. I hope this helps.
I think overexposure or sometimes underexposure is not a bad thing in videos. It's just natural and the way it is. If I look straight in to the sun I also don't see the contours of the sun because it's overexposed in real life so why should it be visible on a camera, that's just unnatural
I prefer the look of the 4 during the day time, only reason I'd want the 5 is for night time shooting which I really enjoy doing. Makes it a tough choice for me
@@redarndiculous No problem. The pocket 3 has a larger sensor which allows for more light to be captured. It also has a gimbal which helps with stabilizing the camera in low light. Just remember the camera is not an action cam. Its fragile and not waterproof.
You did a really good test here. OA5 is better in low light indeed, but the look on OA4 in the dark is kind of better. But with the newest firmware that came out 2 days ago, OA5 perform maybe worse? I'm not a big fan of the HDR-look with OA5, and they should have boosted the shadows a bit less. But after your test it looks like Color-mode is more for the main user and not for the colorist. D-Log M should be the way to go for us others to get the best and identical look between both cameras. OA5 have worse stabilization than OA4, that I have seen from my tests. But I have to say, I do love this new OA5, it is way sharper and -2 Texture perform about the same as 0 Sharpness on OA4. Also OA5 have better close focus than OA4. Did a test yesterday and it looks like -0.3 EV would do better in daylight since it still overexpose a bit too much.
Great video, thank you! The supernight mode apparently brings back the noise reduction AND the sharpness setting, which I don't like, the exagerated edges dont look natural in my opinion. In the end I prefer the OA4 in most of the shots, even if we lose some highlights and shadows, overall it just looks more natural.
Some shots are better on Action 4 some on Action 5. It's at tie in terms of image quality and looks. But battery life is much better in A5 and ability to connect 2 mics might be a winning factor. But upgrading from 4 ... not sure, unless someone needs 2 mics. I got 5 personally, but haven't got any action cameras.
@@PatchedBandit Yes, but most of the longer record time comes from better efficiency of the new camera elements. Probably mostly 4nm chips. Together with a new battery this gives a significant difference. Although it's not that A4 records for 30 minutes :D. But I haven't seen good deals on A4 adventure combo yet, just 10% off tops :(.
10% bigger battery is not nothing though but yes the new camera can be more power efficient too. Maybe partly also due to the new screen technology. Haven't seen a comparison on battery life with both cameras using the same bigger battery. Maybe I will try that later.
Wow. I think you just saved me $140. BUT - does the 40Mp vs 10Mp come into play? If they are the same chip why does the 5 have 40 Megapixels on video and stills? What am I missing? I like the 4 better and its $209 with Black Friday sale
Video has exactly the same pixel count on both cameras. I have never taken a single photo with either camera so I can't say much about that 🙂 The whole issue about 40MP vs 10MP is due to this Quad Bayer sensor in the 5 pro. Effectively it combines multiple pixels in to one (Pixel binning) when taking video and therefore produces on paper a 40 megapixel resolution still pictures. The quality differences have been said to be small though and on video you don't get any more pixels than on the older models. Apparently the 4 has the similar tech but the 40mpx mode is not enabled by software. (havent looked that much into this) Who knows why but most of these things are many times just marketing like the resolution game has always been. Also who takes stills with an actioncam? Almost any phone will take better photos.
Well done comparison video my friend and really nice details in every shot. The micro jitter was horrible in some of the night shot, but we have to be honest, how much night time riding are we actually doing? After seeing this video and a bunch of other videos, my money is still on GoPro, but if DJI continues to push this much each year, I bet we see a really great camera in one or two generations. And that is good news for us as consumers. 👏🏻
In the winter time I do benefit from the low light performance but definitely most filming even I do on the daytime. Competition is always good 🙂 I felt compelled to do this video as I'm not buying the "dynamic range" talks without chewing first especially as the sensor is the same size on both 😁✌️ Thanks for taking the time to comment 🫡
Loving the CRF300L :D I just got the 5 pro and its super nice. Don't know about the 4, but having QOL improvements is prefered for me. I don't want to spend a lot of time on video editing.
Nice video. I can make my own bad HDR look in Davinci Resolve so I'll keep my DJI Action 4 haha. You can get an HDR look without making things look unnatural if you shoot in D-LOG M on both cameras.
@ thank you. I do not have an action camera yet. Love my Dji drones. The Action 4 is on sale right now for $230. So I’m not sure which camera to start with.
@@riverrat306 Action 4 is near as makes no difference the same camera but only supports 1 wireless mic instead of 2. I would take the deal on 4 personally if the mic thing is not important.
@@riverrat306 If you are willing to pay the extra for slightly more battery life then the 5 pro might be the right pick. The testing online that you find in most videos are done in the low bitrate mode as the high mode didn't exist when the camera was released. Still I have noticed the 5 pro lasts a bit longer even in the high mode. Can't remember how much more it was on my last shoot but I noticed a difference. With the new big battery the oa 3 ends first. Then 4 then 5 pro.
@@JokobZuma DJI inbuilt mics are usually really good. So normal vlogging is most likely enough with the built in mics if you buy a windsock on top of the camera. Motovlogging is not possible using the built in mic though if you want the audience to hear you talking in the helmet.
@JokobZuma It supports wired microphones with DJI mic adapter. Even wireless microphones are supported if you use the DJI transmitter receiver combo. I started my channel with the Osmo Action 3 and I used the dji wireless mic 1 set a lot back then. I recommend just buying a wired DJI mic adapter + lav combo. That's what I tend to use even with the newest cameras as it's the most reliable.

The colors is over saturated and over sharpened
Really hate this outcomes from the action 5 and i will stop preordering
Great video! I'm pretty sure most of the things you complained in this video can be sorted out by an firmware update. After using Drift Ghost S for almost a decade and had 2 crashes having the unlucky timing of battery dying a few minutes right before my accidents, I'm deffenetly choosing Osmo Action 5. I want to buy mine next week, OA4 is half the price of OA5 with adv combo pack but im still going for the latter for better battery life, and better low light performance.
0:46 The old 4 may seem darker, but it has a more cinematic look compared to the totally artificial look of the new 5.
it looks like CGI game graphics out of the OA5 😂😂
Every other sponsored reviewer just glorifies this overprocessed garbage and never even show action footage, just themselves walking along a footpath... thanks for this honest comparison
Sadly most reviewers are sponsored and even those who say they are not still got the camera for free in many cases. To me this is still a sponsorship.
I buy my own grear and If I get something as a freebie I always disclose it as a sponsorship.
Its a sad affair how these things get so affected by money.
Thanks for this comparison! Nicely put together video. I appreciate the pauses for your analysis and what to look at .
Glad it was helpful!
am i the only one who still likes the old rich dramatic yet truer to life look vis a vis the clean bright cartoon plastic world or high res game graphics look of the OA5pro?
Yes.
Thank you for the detailed and unbiased review. I fully agree that DJI is way, way, way overcooking the HDR look. The sharpness + overdone HDR processing make the footage look cheap
Great video, man. At last somebody showed everything that i wanted to see) Thank you!
The updates are nice and sometimes they listen to people complaining 😄
I usually have just shot everything in normal color modes on dji cameras but the new cam forced me to switch to shooting d-log in all of them so I can get close to the same colors from all dji cameras I use.
Its crazy how they cant get the colors even near the same after each release. Differences are insanely huge.
Thank you for this. It's a relief to see that D-Log disables the super artificial enhancements added in normal mode. I consider the normal mode look unusable. D-Log looks great though.
My thoughts exactly 🫡
Still rocking the osmo 3 . Good enough for now.
The Batteries in the new one are no Joke
Thx Mate :)
All DJI products are highly reliable. This is why all my cameras are DJI.
Even without pixel peeping you can see that the details are better even in daylight on the 5 normal color mode or with the dji luts.
As another post raised. You can also use a mic2 directly with the osmo 4, you dont need the reciever either so both are equal as i see it here.
One difference is the 5 pro supports 2 mics at the same time.
thanks for the review!
Good to see an actual "in action" dual test of these cameras, rather than someone just walking and filming themselves talking. Thanks.
Thanks. For obvious reasons these camera brands don't send me any free stuff so that video might never come 😅
3 actioncams on the regular use is enough for now.. my budjet can't take any more hits like this 😂✌️
Thanks for your really good review. Do you think they will be able to fix the color problem of the 5 with a firmware update?
They easily could give us a separate hdr switch but as of now they have not
Great video and comparison thank you for the video.I am in the hunt for either one of these and I am certainly leaning toward the 4 after watching this....I am not a pro by any means, but I do know what I like and and the 4 in my vision just looks more natural and I like the warmer colors.
In the first shots it was really like 90% the same only maybe at 7:32 the part around the sun is even correctly exposed on the new cam but that's pretty much it lol
Could you record some bits with fixed settings? I mean like 180degree shutter rule, ND filter and then both at the same iso in different scenes if one then can count with more DR? I guess it will be basically the same miniscule but still I'd be interested.
Other than that another disappointing year then. Still rocking the GoPro 11 and don't have a feeling that there hasn't been real progress after that one
Many thanks for this very well made comparison and analysis!! 🤝
I've mot had th mic2 drop connection to my 4. Which is a comment that surprises me that the 5 support direct mic2 connection. So does the osmo 4..
Nice video . Did you say the new action 5 pro can support dual DJI mic 2s wirelessly?
Yes it can 👍👍
Very useful information, thank you Ismo!
Thank you Pavlin 🙌
Liked and subscribed! Finally someone not bending over for a DJI sponsorship! Gonna go buy one now.
Excellent review. Almost got the 5 you just saved me $110. Thank you.
The 5 looks way better in this video
Very interesting comparison! I loved when you showed the HDR Lut on the osmo 4 side. Thanks for the honest review
CRF does everything we ask it to 😎
@@PatchedBandit Without much adrenaline, though ;-)
Loved the video tests dude.... Brilliant Video in fact.... Happy Days....from the uk😊
Coming from an action 1 so appreciate your advice!
Happy to help!
Same here! I’m still undecided lol
Actually the image from osmo 4 is much more natural and pleasing all the time including night mode. What did they improve in the wireless mic side?
5 pro supports 2 mics at the same time instead of only 1 on the action 4.
@@PatchedBandit that's really cool, thx
Upgraded from the action 3. no complaining here, love the 10 bit, I also love the hdr look in auto, and I can switch it off whenever I want.... I think the action 4 was a mistake.
Nice compare! And there is no way to tweak amount of the HDR effect in the normal color in the OA5? So bad and unnatural look, when HDR is boosted on "all money".
Not at the moment. I hope DJI will add one.
@@PatchedBandit yeah HDR feels too overdone in some scenes
@@PatchedBandit but D-log M with dJi lut looks promising
With D-Log both look great. As the OA5 standard profile is so overdone I need to revert to shooting in D-Log with all my cameras to get similar results with all my camera angles.
Not a big deal but before the OA5pro I didn't need to do this as other DJI products look very good with the normal profile.
@@PatchedBandit yeah I understand but as for my first action camera what you say shall I go for this ?
@@shantanusinghmertia7617 wait for the new firmware to fix major issues and then revisit.
Very good review. Best so far.
my action5 pro is getting very hot after recording (4k/60fps)
tips tricks how to solve this? cause I thought this was only a issue from GoPro?!
- Record in lower FPS
- Lower Resolution
- Or low bitrate mode
Probably the only things that work unfortunately. Haven't had this issue when I'm riding but you are probably recording indoors and the camera is stationary? Or just in hot climate?
Can you do a comparison with Ace Pro 2
Sadly I don't have access to that camera
Very honest review I also have both dji cameras and my observation is very similar. I'm currently working on my comparison Video, with minor adjustments on action 5 you can lower the ev value along with few other minor adjustments you'll get quite impressive footage
I don’t think you can simply process it to match, especially super night mode. In testing the cameras now, and it’s pretty clear that the action 5 does beat out the 4 handily in low light, like easily, but there are some quirks.
At Night its a bit better for sure.
Nice video.
I’m sticking with my OA4 for now. Funny how the other reviews praise the new camera so much.
Good choice! 😁
Yeah, same. Wanted to switch from 4 to 5, but dont want to anymore. 5 is sharper, but the image looks way overprocessed. And in log almost no difference. Gonna wait for 6 or 7.
Not to be unexpected..... Most of the camera review sites are bought and paid for
Good call.
It's looking like a video game, when we went from analogue music to digital some people didn't like it and still don't.
great review u just helped me save money
Maybe a software update can enhance some minor issues with the Action 5 camera. Great video sir.
Very good comparison 👍
Glad you liked it
Thanks for this video!
Nice video. Good and honest opinions. Night time was better as we can see, but how often you record at night time is another story.
True and even at night kinda need to pixel peep to see an improvement. Very minor change from what I assume is the ISO boost and improved noise removal.
Hyvää työtä jälleen 💪🏽👍🏽
🙏
Thanks for the video once again.
im new to the action camera arena, so def grabbing the OA5P, thanks for the video.
Nice content, thank you for the video ✌️
Im in somewhat of a dilemma, my Action 4 is defective now im not sure what to replace it with. I heard rumors the 5 firmware updates are coming? Great comparison!😊
I'm happy with the OA 5 Pro in D-Log M. It's a nice camera even though in my eyes DJI is ruining the normal color profile with this dynamic range trickery.
@@PatchedBandit Thanks, I'll ✋️ wait.
If you buy the dji ND filters the lens cover dont need to be removed
10:03 the only thing that bothers me is the weird cone shape lens flare they produce from either the street lights or the sun on both the action 4 and 5.
Yep. They tend to have some ugly reflections for sure 😅
Ride safe!
I just read that the firmware v01.01.0510 was just released to add bitrate adjusting. Also a high bitrate option
What camera do you recommend if i don't have any action cameras? I can't decide between action 4 and 5 pro.
Only reason I see to pay more for the 5 pro is if you need dual mics.
4 = Single Wireless mic support
5 pro = Dual Wireless mic support
Bigger batteries on the 5 pro but the new battery works with the older 3 and 4 cameras too so that's not really a good reason either.
If one was to stick the new battery in to the old camera, how close would the recording time be to the new cameras recording time.
i think in the next firmware update they should have a toggle to remove on/off the hdr
A cracking break down PB. Thanks for putting in all of the effort 👌🏼
Thanks for honest reply
Great content, thank you this. But i loved of you had tested both cameras without their night modes enabled. Many testers say the night mode on the oa4 is worse if you do your own settings+dlog.
It surely is. This is why I left it out all together and gave the OA 4 the best chance to keep up with the new one. It didnt do that well even on night mode so I thought it's no use me testing it in all modes if it was defeated even with night mode.
I never liked the OA 4 night mode personally. That was the year DJI tricked us in to buying the "big sensor" and then they just slowed the shutterspeed so much that everything got blurry in action scenes. ruclips.net/video/rpq5qS4B02M/видео.html
I wish DJI would give an option to lower the sharpness in night mode on the new camera.
Hi, how do you solve wind noise? There is only a little wind while riding. What is your clear sound system?
2 years of trial and error 😅 Movo ACM400 mic for helmet audio is a big help
Do you think future firmware updates to eliminate these issues you experienced?😮 Thx!
I need to try the new firmware but I doubt they fix the unnatural normal mode.
@PatchedBandit Thanks!
Can you compare the action 5 against the insta ace Pro 2 when it come out.
I don't see myself buying it so probably can't

The 5 has brighter colours and I think DJI are marketing it to the new user who doesn’t want to do a lot of colour work in post. In D-Log M I think I prefer the 5 but the difference is minimal. I don‘t know if you say it like this, you opened my eyes. I think in low Light th OA5 is Better but i only want to Film my skiing an i don’t Ski at Night so the OA4 is my Choice Now
4 is a great pick still. The 5 pro is at most a very minor update and I kinda regret paying the money I did already.
@@PatchedBandit okay that is cool and apperently this is the only Video Where the OA4 is Better but Now i have to consider whether Business it with care refresh or without. Thanks, i will be buying insta360 pro2 because i don’t want to do too much editing in my video.
Can you try editing the Action 4 Night clips and try to copy the exposure of Action 5 Pro?
It's possible but the OA 4 footage starts to look quite muddy and detail is not at the same level if you try to do it in post processing. Here's some quick samples: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1xWRpwAASn-n1wSTcw4sk5ioywlkzHFt2?usp=sharing
One could try to make the exposure brighter straight in camera raising the exposure but I don't think it's going to win against the new camera with the boosted ISO and new cleaning algorithm. I hope this helps.
I think overexposure or sometimes underexposure is not a bad thing in videos. It's just natural and the way it is. If I look straight in to the sun I also don't see the contours of the sun because it's overexposed in real life so why should it be visible on a camera, that's just unnatural
Hi,is the low light much better with the pocket 3? great video by the way 💪
Pocket 3 is waaay better in low light. Much bigger sensor and gimbal makes a world of difference.
Thanks, waiting for the insta360 ace pro 2 before making a decision 🙏
I prefer the look of the 4 during the day time, only reason I'd want the 5 is for night time shooting which I really enjoy doing. Makes it a tough choice for me
Why not buy the pocket 3 for night time shooting? Its way better at it than action cams.
@@Koensol Because I didn't know? Lol thanks for the tip
@@redarndiculous No problem. The pocket 3 has a larger sensor which allows for more light to be captured. It also has a gimbal which helps with stabilizing the camera in low light. Just remember the camera is not an action cam. Its fragile and not waterproof.
@@Koensol Yeah It didn't come up when I searched action cams with a 1 inch sensor...probably because it's not an action cam.
Nice video, it almost feels like it's like the action 4 with better night mode.
In the end I prefer the OA4 in most of the shots, even if we lose some highlights and shadows, overall it just looks more natural.
congrats🎉
Some shots are better on Action 4 some on Action 5. It's at tie in terms of image quality and looks.
But battery life is much better in A5 and ability to connect 2 mics might be a winning factor.
But upgrading from 4 ... not sure, unless someone needs 2 mics.
I got 5 personally, but haven't got any action cameras.
The new 1950 mAh batteries work on the 4 too
@@PatchedBandit Yes, but most of the longer record time comes from better efficiency of the new camera elements.
Maybe I will try that later.
this is so realistic and I love it
In local evaluation in China, the fifth generation was also not as good as expected.
It’s like the sun is pulsing 😮
I have never taken a single photo with either camera so I can't say much about that 🙂
The whole issue about 40MP vs 10MP is due to this Quad Bayer sensor in the 5 pro.
Almost any phone will take better photos.
tbh, you convinced me to get the OA 5
Well done comparison video my friend and really nice details in every shot. The micro jitter was horrible in some of the night shot, but we have to be honest, how much night time riding are we actually doing? After seeing this video and a bunch of other videos, my money is still on GoPro, but if DJI continues to push this much each year, I bet we see a really great camera in one or two generations. And that is good news for us as consumers. 👏🏻
In the winter time I do benefit from the low light performance but definitely most filming even I do on the daytime. Competition is always good 🙂 I felt compelled to do this video as I'm not buying the "dynamic range" talks without chewing first especially as the sensor is the same size on both 😁✌️
Thanks for taking the time to comment 🫡
What happened to your rally tower visor?
Just too lazy to put it back sometimes 😊 I need to take it off when I load the bike to the van.
Loving the CRF300L :D
I just got the 5 pro and its super nice.
Fully agree.
Thanks for sharing.
I've noticed clouds look terrible in OA5 compared to OA4.
Yes they do
If I buy an action 4 and buy the new A5pro batteries will I still get the 2 1/2- 3 hour battery life?
Osmo action 4 is slightly worse with the new battery.
@ mic isn’t a big deal. Battery life is.
Are you wearing a mic or using the camera mic
Wearing a dji mic 2 + LAV inside the helmet
@PatchedBandit so you think vlogging would be alright, just using the built in mic?
@@JokobZuma DJI inbuilt mics are usually really good. So normal vlogging is most likely enough with the built in mics if you buy a windsock on top of the camera.
Motovlogging is not possible using the built in mic though if you want the audience to hear you talking in the helmet.
@PatchedBandit i just bought the action 3 and I don't think it supports mics, I'll just have to make it work, thanks for the input
