The video recording being stopped due to heat has been fixed in Android 14, In Depth Tech Reviews tested it on the Android 14 Beta on his Pixel 7 Pro in direct sunlight in high temperatures in the UAE and it recorded 4K 60 FPS for over 1.5 hours without breaking a sweat, in fact he had to manually stop the video because he couldn't be bothered continuing the test, the phone did not stop recording.
This should be even better with the Pixel 8 considering Tensor G3 should be a lot more efficient than Tensor G2, they also wouldn't have given it a 2400 nit peak brightness display if it wasn't efficient.
This is why the Pixel 8 supporting 7 years of OS upgrades is incredibly important, software updates can absolutely make a massive difference even when working with limited hardware. I can't wait for that TSMC fabbed fully custom Google designed Tensor G5 chip in the Pixel 10.

My pixel is on android 14 and still overheats outside with video 🫣 but I hope with pixel 8 it won’t be an issue. I think it’ll be good 👍🏼

@@MarksTech It might need a few days to settle, whenever there is a major update the OS is optimising in the background. If it doesn't fix it after a week you could try a factory reset although that's not ideal.
I've mostly heard that battery and thermals have been improved quite a bit on Android 14 on the Tensor G1 and G2.

Definitely agree that Google committing that this device will follow the AI curve is huge. I bought the iPhone 15 Pro, but this is now on return for the Pixel. I was almost sold on how impressive Apple's chip is, and the potential stored there, but I predict that power will be somewhat locked in, relying on third party apps that don't have the power of Google at their disposal and/or Apple retaining certain features for future iterations of the iPhone, even if technically this years chip could be great for a few years.
Wondering how far the video will be behind the iPhone (because that seems likely) without the AI part, that pro-use factor is the only unique differentiator at the moment.

I’m in the same boat. There’s no way to know if this video boost will produce decent results on a regular basis. I’m assuming a few years down the road it’ll happen on device. Even so I’d like to see better hardware for video. It’s the one thing Apple has over them when it comes to cameras.

I guess I’m the rare person that doesn’t care as much about camera gimmicks and silly features. I would much rather Google focus that insane amount of energy on getting the core basics right. Things like improving battery life, getting rid of bugs and glitches, reducing overheating, improving connectivity and call quality. I will never understand why so many people fall for the smoke screen of gimmicks over core functionality. I will say I like what I see so far, but I’m cautiously optimistic based on the last two Tensor variant Pixels with the 6 and 7 series. Hopefully this is the generation where Google starts to fix their quality control issues.

On your point regarding whether Google's video boost is actually a video or not, if you're talking just in terms of which phone wins out with video quality, then for sure it is video. Because it's not really edited video. Instead, it's fully processed video. Or another way to think about it is that it's computational videography that just can't be handled on the phone hardware alone. Thus, the reason it's sent to the cloud. It could be processed on the phone but it might take weeks to process one video and you'd have to keep your phone plugged in the whole time. And regarding whether things will hold up in court, your example of digital zoom being picked apart as fallible, that threshold was passed long ago by every smartphone. I'm pretty sure video boost will put Google way ahead in the video quality department. It'll be interesting to see how other OEMs respond since most don't have the ability to respond in kind.

I hear you on the photo/video editing and being unreliable as evidence. I believe you could check the metadata and see that it has been modified, by AI or otherwise, from the original.
That being said, I can't be upset about the creative possibilities of these AI enhancements. The best take feature seems like a dream for parents who just want decent photos of us with our squirmy kids. Is it dishonest? Maybe, maybe not. The software is still pulling faces from real photos that were taken at the same time, so it's not like it's a complete artificial construct; it just did a little timing magic.
The magic editor for photos is more like digital art on your phone. I don't think it's supposed to be used as a representation of real life. This kind of unrealistic editing has already been happening with filters on social media. If you (the viewer) think everything that's in Instagram is real, then you're kidding yourself. We need to be more savvy about reality, and realistic expectations versus unrealistic/impossible goals.
Regarding the video boost/HDR capabilities, I think the idea is to be able to approach what the human eye can see/experience. Our eyes are incredible at adjusting to light while maintaining color balance. I think that being able to take a video and have it look like the real life experience when you show it to someone else can be really powerful. That's my two cents anyway.

The thing about video boost is that while impressive on paper it's basically taking "cheating" to the next level. I balked at the idea of computational photography at first being a hobbyist photographer and eventually came around. This is next level though. My question is what kind of raw video quality are we getting that we need this? I have the same questions about night sight video as well. But overall really enjoyed the presentation and looking to see if Google finally solved the two biggest issues I had with the 6 Pro: battery life and overheating. Please test the Pixel 8 Pro with a Zoom call. Zoom would for some reason absolutely fry my Pixel 6 Pro within minutes. I used to be so heated literally 😂😂

Really what is a photo, this is so fake think about it you take a photo and it replaces your face from a photo from 5 years ago when you looked better ? so where is the limit ? Taking a photo of a car but the Al will replace the photo from when you first got the car when it was brand new. Is this whats going on now ?

No no :) it replaces your face with a burst shot from that same scene.

Well......sometimes I feel pixel devices weren't made to use a cover.....they are gorgeous as they are .....but for protection......you have to use a cover and that's a shame.....

Video boost SHOULDN'T be limited to the Pro version. It should be a paid subscription feature.

Ahh so iPhone users can have? Too bad so sad. I'm stoked to go to Asia for 5 weeks this winter and I'll be able to use it! Picked up the Pixel 8 Pro from BestBuy for $575 out the door including tax and it came with a freaking watch too! If I bought a 15 Pro Max and a Apple watch even with my 3rd gen SE trade in I would be up in the $1,500 range. Screw that

Honestly if the picture and video quality still looks bad on social media then people still won't care enough to buy this thing... They need to set their priorities straight

Google have always been about AI....making a smartphone that is smarter comes first. Gradually they will incorporate these things also. Their social media photos and videos used to be boring g but now they aren't....but at the same time not perfect either.....so they will get there

The s23 ultra is way better than Iphone and Pixel and with features like the programmable side key and gaming ,samsung has been able to do those things for years as well as USB C. I have the s23 ultra and it's the best phone ive ever used. Also the s23 ultra has quickshare , dynamic island, multi tasking , s pen capabilities and emulators w with more games, and 10 x zoom with full clarity etc. However, I just used the 15 pro max today and the camera is impressive and it's very light but still my s23 ultra is more fun to use and also more capabilities and just wait until the z fold 6 ultra is released next year. I was playing Mario Oddysey on my S23 ultra which the Iphone 15 pro max cannot do. I can play any game for any system.
Also with the iphone It can't really multi task, in screen fingerprint scanner, superior thermal management, use copy and paste clipboard, run emulators for old school games and new games , use s pen stylus functionality with gestures , download anything from anywhere at anytime, use smart view projection nor anything like DEX projection , wireless powershare which comes in handy when you forget charger , similar charging speeds. Also on ios 17 reaching the control center is harder then my old iPhone 6s and you can't really customize the navigation method to shapes like samsung which isn't necessarily for me . For me I'm a samsung guy but I'll say this iphone 15 pro I give the camera clarity props after testing it but Samsung once I experienced those features I can't live without them

AI, because Google is bad at physics and basic photography.
