  • The new Google Pixels have landed - but instead of a hands-on or first impressions video, how’bout we do something a little different this time around? For the 2023 Made By Google event, MrMobile was invited to sit down with Rick Osterloh, the company's SVP of Devices & Services - in other words, the single best person to ask about what’s new and what’s coming for the Pixel. Join Michael Fisher for the on-site interview about the Pixel 8, Pixel Watch 2, and the future of "the Google phone."
    [ABOUT THIS VIDEO]
This video was shot on location at the Made by Google 2023 press event at Google's Pier 57 offices in NYC, for which Google provided ground transportation (Uber). Google also provided production assistance in the form of a camera crew, but the editing was by MrMobile himself (which is why the audio quality is not as high as it could be - that's my editing error, not the production crew's).
MrMobile does not accept compensation from the manufacturers of the products he reviews in exchange for producing content. While Google was sent an outline of the interview questions beforehand, the questions did not need to be approved and I asked several questions not in the pre-interview brief. No payment was provided and no manufacturer or carrier was afforded a preview, editorial input or copy approval rights concerning this review.

I remember the days when Rick was working for Motorola (when they were owned Google) and they produced such cool products like the first the Moto G and the Moto X, probably my favorite smartphone of all time and one of the most innovative ones I have ever seen. The Moto G was probably the best device at that time. I remember breaking one (seawater) but I got a second one instead because it was so cheap and I liked it so much.

What I'm really excited about is their intention to expand to more markets. Here in the Philippines, I believe there is a strong community of Pixel users and they always find ways to get the devices in their hands even though there's no official seller locally. I really do hope they expand here in PH. Surely a lot of Filipinos will certainly consider getting into the Pixel experience once it's officially sold here locally.
And yeah, the 7 years of OS updates is really crazy. Excited to see how this device matures until 2030.

Either way, you can agree with it being a good thing if ever they expand here in PH. At least with your Apple example, you can expect official support to come in the near future whereas Pixel hanggang asa nga lang.
One benefit in having Pixel officially sold locally if ever is 5G support. Yun wala currently kahit na I know the bands used locally are supported by the phone it's only the carrier list in the device prevents the use of 5G in PH unless you unlock and root the phone. I really truly hope they figure out how to improve overheating, especially given how how this past summer was. My iPhone on the other hand handles it well for the most part and didn’t leave me hanging for long on times when it too overheated.

Imho, the Pixel 8 is as lame as the 7 and the 6. Barely reaches an okay level. Save your money, and buy yourself a Pixel 4 XL or a Pixel 5a5G. The last, almost really good Pixel phones (And the best they made thus far, together with the Pixel 3. They never made a complete smash hit though. I'm still waiting for it. Problem is, that the last two times they where close, they decided to make a major shift in the internal and exterior design. The first time was the switch from Nexus phones to Pixels. The second time was from Pixel 5a5g to the Pixel 6 line up. A clear step back in pretty much every single way. The Pixel 6's was more or less a flopp. The Pixel 7 lineup was really just the Pixel 6 lineup mostly corrected. I.e. what the bare minimum for the Pixel 6's should've been. And now you got the Pixel 8 lineup which may actually, finall, after three generations be on par and in some areas surpass the Pixel 4 XL. But we are four freaking generations down the line.. we should be able to get, oh so much more out of a phone from Google at this point. So once again, I can only say.. "Well.. you're moving in the right direction.. You're getting there.. slowly but surely. Just a few more years). And with that in mind, let me give you a little tip. As of right now, or at least, the last time I checked, you could get yourself a brand new Pixel 4XL and a genuine leathercase for like 350 USD. Or a Pixel 5a5G for about the same price on eBay. And after you do that, you got yourself a nice phone for the next three-four years. And then you'll be good and ready for the Pixel 11 or 12. Which will probably be the model where Google finally gets their act together completely (my estimation, based on their past phone making)(hopefully 😬🤞).

I thought it was a good interview! I would definitely be interested in seeing future interviews. The more you do it, the more you'll stream line your process. I love your videos! I try to watch every one you bring out. I also appreciate your want for transparency and full disclosure. I trust you and the information you bring. Please keep it all up.

I love this. You pressed hard, really asking all the hard and true questions that many pixel fans have been wondering. in my opinion, this guy done all he could a while ago, it's time for people who are more capable to take over

Great interview! Thanks for doing and uploading this video! It was great seeing the vision from Google 1st person and their view of their own perception publicly and their direction on the Pixel lineup. It would be interesting to see if they ever intend to pick up Pixel for Chrome OS again.

About four months ago I commented on a Made by Google community post asking them to introduce a blue color, rounder corners, and a matte back on the Pixel 8 lineup…and they delivered! I like to think they heeded my requests, even tho it may have been coincidence lol. Hoping to make the upgrade this year!

Thank You SO MUCH for your level of journalism during this interview. Your content has been like an island I’ve stumbled upon over a sea of endless RUclips videos reiterating on PR companies want influencers to focus on. Great work to you and the Mr Mobile team.

Excellent interview and impressed you managed to press on topics such as different services, products, along with trickier questions re long term support ( or lack of ). Could easily have fallen into just talking about the products released today.

Loved this interview, thank you so much for doing it. I've been a big fan of Rick from his Motorola time, he always came off as such a genuinely nice guy and I'm really happy that he's been leading the Pixel team and the Pixel 8 phones are really the best Pixel yet. I was truly blown away with some of the AI camera features and I'm super excited to get my 8 Pro next week in Bay Blue :)

For a first in-person interview you did great (I actually can't believe this is number 1 after all these years of watching you across various channels)
Ricks time is likely incredibly valuable - so you would have been under pressure to make best use of a very limited time window, and it's hard to go off-script to follow up on a very interesting answer or to dig deeper, knowing it might throw the rest of your interview off.
Anyway - more of these "from the horses mouth" interviews would be great, especially say, after you have already done a first look/ review and you can affirm or change your thoughts on a device or service based on what the designers/engineers were doing during development.

Why providing 7 years of OS and security update for a phone is such an amazing thing because : 1) it enables consumers to keep a great phone for years to go , then we don't have to waste money on switching phones frequently; 2) it's a showcase of great products that last; 3) environment friendly is so important now ( I have money to upgrade phone doesn't mean I want to, definitely not something I have to) ; 4) higher consumer stickiness

This interview was way more than the classic tech bro interviewing big tech bro. He asked some legit on point questions!! As someone living in southern Africa and jumping through hoops to get a pixel seeing them. Micheal Fisher is the BOMB when it comes to RUclips reviewers. Please please do more of these, you're asking REAL questions

Thank you for addressing the overheating issue. I experienced that to the point my device would shut down just from uploading photos or using the camera too long. I've never had a device Android or iOS to do that. I hope it has been properly addressed on the 8 Pro.

I think you actually did a really good job on the interview. Sure, in retrospect you probably wanted to press a bit a harder on some issues but the interview as a whole seemed relaxed and natural, and you got Rick to talk enthusiastically about a variety of things, which is not nothing on your first try!I’d definitely watch another Michael vs Rick interview! ❤

I just want to say shout out to you Michael for giving some tough questions, and to be honest shout out to Rick for setting down and taking some tough questions. People can say what they want and maybe he dodged around a couple things but I don't see Tim Cook sitting down and dealing with any tough in your face interviews.

@MrMobile, Unlike almost every other RUclipsr on the platform, I Trust You and what you say and stand for. #StandWithMrMobile And I for one am very glad you had this sit down! I also understand that we're our own worst critic, but don't beat yourself up too much. There's only so much truth that you'll get out of a VP-level employee of a company. ;)
With that said (15:24 ), I think the line, "only time will tell..." if Google will continue to keep its word and stop cancelling so many good things that it creates. It's not like they're hurting for money, so who really knows why they cancel so many good things.
Keep up the great work Michael! As always, stay safe and take care.

Excellent questions and great interview overall! Still sad we don't get too much info on expansion 😢
Now it seems that Google is placing itself on the market to provide a very good phone experience with their Pixel only features, but not only that, now they are starting to view their cloud as capable of providing features that no phone however powerful can provide. While I always like having the biggest and greatest in terms of SOC, for a very long time phones have been good enough. I must admit that I only use a fraction of the power of my phone, so a hardware and software shift towards more efficient design is very exciting to me.
A phone that can run at 120 fps on every single everyday task I send it's way, uses the cloud for backup for specific tasks I only use occasionally seems like the way to go. I really hope this translate not only into longer support, but also much more battery life.
