    4:43 Correction: 34.4C is about right for human surface temperature. The 36-37C you’re referring to is *inside* the body (which is why you need to insert thermometers when you measure).

      I guess how the calculations are supposed to work is that you have to take the room temperature and skin temperature and have a certain general formula to calculate it. I swear the common temperature sensor that we have during the covid times is no better than what we have right now.

      @@63amgTV Yes, on camera please.
      But seriously, my point was just that the temperature sensor seems to measure accurately. To measure a fever, instead of insertion into the body, they will probably have an algorithm that infers the internal body temperature from the surface temperature.

      The problem is surface temperature depends on ambient temperature. If he was in a sauna, the skin would be warmer than 37. Also im skeptical about how sweat influences the reading. IR thermometers are fast and convenient but they only provide a clue. To confirm body temp you should use a „normal“ thermometer.
      Of course ai could try to take into account the local weather forecast and/or ask for a temperature scan of the environment.

    Couple things about the temp monitor. The FDA clearance process is a BIG deal that takes a long time. My guess is they were expecting to have it prior to launch, but didn't get it and then decided to leave it for the future approval odds. Also, measuring body temp is a different process than measuring skin surface temp, which is why you're seeing the discrepancy.

    The temperature sensor thing is to do with the difference between *_body temperature_* and *_skin temperature_*
    Your skin will always be notably cooler than what would be medically considered your "body temperature" (hence the under reading when trying with the organic setting), and being able to reliably make that distinction in software is what requires FDA approval.

      I would also argue that that's why there's only Object Temperature. Once approved by FDA we might see Inner or Human temperature. It's a completely different reading. The sensor is clearly IR so it's totally capable.

    • @tomconnors8165
      @tomconnors8165 7 месяцев назад

      I think it has to do with the settings. Thermal sensors measure the wavelength of the IR light that all things emit to calculate temp. Every type of material and surface has a different emissivity setting on a full thermal camera, and different surfaces that are the same temp, will appear to be a little bit different. Once they can use a "human" setting it will be closer. My thermal camera says I am 38.8c in default general settings mode but 36.6c on my forehead in human thermometer mode.

  • @Arcanttos
    @Arcanttos 7 месяцев назад +36

    34.4 is an accurate temperature for the forehead skin. 36 or 37 is the range for internal body temeperature, so i would say the sensor is working pretty well. Now you will have to inform people not to take decisions based on skin temperature but on armpit or mouth.

      @@Moody_Blues_ That’s not how biology (or physics) works. Skin temperature will often be differerent from internal body temperature. If you took the same non-contact infrared thermometer and measure your forehead while you were standing in a snowstorm for a few minutes while you standing in direct sunlight on a cloudless afternoon, the thermometer will produce noticeably varying measurements while your internal body temperature will not have changed all that much (assuming you’re healthy and your body is capable of proper thermoregulation). NCITs are more popular these days because of their… lack of contact, but an oral, rectal, or even axial measurement is understood to be more accurate.
      Beyond that, studies of non-contact thermometers available to the general public have shown that different manufacturers’ products can vary from each other by +/- 1 to 2 degrees. What matters for certification is consistency of measurement, and that is determined by conducting tests with the device fixed in amount with a specific position, and distance from a known calibrated emitter, not by a lab technician freehanding the device like they were taking a really bad selfie.

    • @CaseyDarwin
      @CaseyDarwin 7 месяцев назад +16

      @@Moody_Blues_no matter how you slice it every no-contact IR thermometer is only reading the surface temperature. There's physically no way for it to measure your internal body temp. It guesses based on the surface temp and those types of thermometer are actually usually off by way more than .1 degree C. They're just convenient and close enough to determine if you have a significant fever or not.

    I love when companies add quirky things to phones, but I feel like the temp sensor isn't it. Maybe if it was an IR camera? That would've been very cool.
    The other thing is that these features are always dropped. I would've loved it if Google stuck with and improved Soli, but these features are always shipped half baked and then canned before they can actually be improved.
    Also, one gimmick I'd love for Android manufacturers to copy from Apple is the LiDAR. Sure most people won't use it, but it allows for really cool things like 3D scanning, which is amazing to use with design software and 3D printers or CNCs.

    • @NopWorks
      @NopWorks 7 месяцев назад +3

      The Lidar was particularly upsetting. Google has a lead on this with Project Tango.
      Then Apple came along with ARkit which doesn't require special hardware. So Google, during their Apple fever era, came out with ARcore & killed off Project Tango.
      (They also uodated Material Design to use white color with outline icons & added a notch to Pixel to follow Apple during this era)
      Now Apple embeds Lidar in their iPhones & iPads, and Android is stuck with inferior quality camera-based solution.
      It's so disappointing. AR measurement is super handy & useful in lots of situations.
      Now even Google's own ARcore-based measurement app is killed off.

    I got my Pixel 8 Pro today. A few things, thermals seem on par with my S22U. While transferring data between my S22U and Pixel they both got pretty toasty but they both felt exactly the same in terms of heat which is good considering it took nearly an hour to transfer all my data, and my Pixel was plugged into a charger the entire time. Fingerprint sensor has been FLAWLESS all day today, I've used it a ton and it has been extremely fast and it hasn't had any trouble at all reading my fingerprint, so again atleast for me it is on par with the ultrasonic sensor in my S22U. Battery life is imo above average, I've been heavily using this phone all day, logging into all of my 204 apps, saving passwords to BitWarden and getting my home screen as close as possible to my S22U homescreen and right now I'm at 57% battery with 4hrs 49mins screen on time, which means I should get another 5-6 hours of screen on time equaling 10-11hrs screen on time total on a single charge. So far I'm VERY impressed with this phone.

I was keeping my old PIxel 4 around mainly as a spare phone and mainly because of the faceunlock. It was cool they had a $250 trade in for it... so I upgraded to the Pixel 8 standard. Most of the new features depend on software that can easily be integrated in most Android phones. The Pixel phones are advertised on top of those features, i.e. by making the other Android devices not enjoying these software advancements. Artificial scarcity. And using the paying users as beta users. I really hope that Alphabet reverts its course and get back to helping out the Open Source community in developing great features for everyone to adopt.

      There are pros and cons to this, sure. Pixel devices (Google phones) are capable of being optimized to a degree not possible for other OEMs. They get to play to gatekeeper to some degree. I believe the "Temperature sensor" has a main role as a Laser focus for the cameras. and the same laser is used as a thermal sensor when it is not being used as a focussing tool, this can be seen in the spec sheet.

    • @tomconnors8165
      @tomconnors8165 7 месяцев назад +1

      I don't think so. A laser does not measure temperature, but thermal sensors sometimes have a laser just so you point it in the right spot. A thermal sensor is reading the wavelength of the infrared light all things emit, and calculates temp from it. The changing of the type of surface in the settings is consistent with changing the emissivity settings on a thermal camera depending on what you want to measure.

    Pixel 7 vs 8
    - New camera censor
    - 120hz vs 90hz
    - 2000 nits vs 1000 nits
    - Better front facing camera
    - Tensor g3
    - Faster charging
    A lot of this could have been done at the same price. Granted, Pixel 6 started the 599 trend back in 2021 and since then in 2 years we have had 13.3% inflation, which would put it at 679$. Might as well make it 699$ right? Because 900$ becomes over 1000$ and you win some you lose some with inflation.
    Over all solid upgrade, and anyone who wants a smaller phone, this now punches really well against the base galaxy S and iphone for 100$ less. Remember, Apple's and Samsungs BASE phone's start at 800$. So google is just doing what they have always done, undercut by 100$.
