I'm glad I went with the pro. I was a little concerned about the size and while I can't use it one handed. The size isn't as bad as I thought it would be. The camera edge makes the phone much easier to hold. The build quality is really nice, the brighter screen is great, and the long term updates give peace of mind. The watch bundle made the price easier to digest as I wanted the watch too.

    Reasons to use thermometer:
1/ A bath for your young ones. Double check temp.
    2. Babies milk - as above.
    3/ Cooking, check cooked properly.
4/ Elderly family, use to check tea, coffee, soup, etc to make sure it is not too hot.
5/ Check the fridge to see actual temp is correct.
6/ In a fire emergency, check temp of door to see if fire behind it.
7/ poke it out the window in cold mornings to see if you need an extra jumper.
8/ Skating on ice, check for weak (less cold spots).
9/ Meals or hot drinks to check at restaurants and coffee machines to see if cooked or hot enough?
10/ If at work to check your employer is not beaking the law with a lower than expected environment.
11/ If you have pets to check temp if they are not their normal self.
12/ check temp of fish tanks.
13/ Check electrical stuff like plugs to make sure no overheating.
14/ to check windows or doors to see if there is any energy gaps.
15/ Checking temps of stuff like slides on hot days for kids.
16/ check for insulation by measuring inner and outer walls.
There are probably many I missed. But it could be useful for some?

When learning to steam milk it's good to get a feel of how hot 65°C milk feels as the milk breaks down when it gets hotter. So you can measure a few times just to get more confident.
Also when brewing coffee you can measure water temp to get f.e. 90°C, so you don't have to buy a 150$+ kettle.
I think many niche use cases, but people disregard it because they don't need it and everything needs to be made for them and only them.

The longer support is important. In a year or so the value of the phone should have dropped, but still has 6 years worth of updates left. €860,- for the pixel 8 is a lot of money for a lot of people. but in a year they will probably have some sales dropping it to €500,- which is much more reasonable. This way they can sell old stock. Only thing is that it might interfere with the pixel 8a in terms of budget so they should price that accordingly to keep it as the budget option. €450,- would be a reasonable starting price for the 8a.

I'd probably go for the regular Pixel 8. I currently have the 6 Pro, and I wouldn't look into upgrading it if it was reliable. Sadly, it's not, the screen stays black from time to time. But as much as I like the telephoto lens, it's just too big for my taste. The regular Pixel 6 wasn't much smaller, that's why I went with the Pro back then. But now the Pixel 8 finally arrived at a very nice form factor.

Hello Mr TechChap. In these reviews I would like to see camera comparison with 2 or 3 gens behind, as example the Pixel 6 Pro or the Pixel 5. I think we should now distinguish between "full" and "partial" updates!
Yes, Apple gives 5+ years of updates, but has a noticeable tendency to artificially cut features that would be technically possible without problems to give customers a reason to buy the new devices.
So, we should judge companies on whether they really deliver full updates (if technically possible) or artificially withhold individual features from older devices.

Nice and honest review, thank you. I got a good deal on the 8 pro when switching phone service provider, which means I get the phone and a watch for the equivalence of £795 (I'm in Denmark). If I sell the watch it's all good. I'm switching from the OP 7 pro, so I expect it to be more than enough for me. Not a gamer, don't really shoot videos and not a huge "screen on time user". However, there are a couple of thing that worry me. Does the phone heat up during normal day to day use? Is there a lot of freezing and lacking? How about battery time, is it good? Also, I'm worried about connectivity issues, WIFI, Bluetooth etc. It's funny how some people say that there are no issues, while others complain about many things. I mean, it's the same phone, right? It's a brand new phone, so I would guess that, a lot of these issues will be fixed with updates. All new phones have issues... I would really appreciate if current 8 pro users would share their experiences 🙂

I'm delighted by it, because I lost my husband in 2020, but now I finally have a wedding photo where everyone is at least looking at the camera. On the actual day the sun was in our eyes and over 6 photos, there was never a photo where everyone was smiling or everyone was looking at the camera. I still don't have one where everyone is smiling, but at least my primary picture no longer has people who are looking down or off to the side. That's where this feature really shines.

The Pixel 8 Pro has improved but it also has some downsides:
-The Tensor G3 chip is a little bit more powerful but not that power efficient.
-The gimmicky temparature sensor is replaceable by a 3D ToF sensor.
    - Average battery life and worse than most competitors.
    - No portrait mode for the 5x telephoto cam.
-The launch price is a bit expensive.

The best feature imo is the audio noise reduction, the meh temperature feature was a missed opportunity to do something better, if it had the Flir infra red system, that would have been way cool.
Some of the AI features are cool , some are very gimmicky , still good to have though.

Honestly, when I heard about the thermometer, I was excited at first. I'd hoped it was a laser thermometer so I could use it for cooking when I have my recipes app open, and of course as a parent with relatively young kids a thermometer would be so useful. But I guess it can't do any of that....

    • @Rpm2878

@@marcuswoodgate4026early leaked marketing showed it as a body thermometer but they didn't get FDA approval, so had to remove that option and add the disclaimer. I believe they're still trying to get approval to add the feature back. It would have been better if they'd gone with a better sensor, like one that could also be used for thermovision or measuring distances, but they didn't.

    • @Reicta

@@marcuswoodgate4026Google said during the reveal presentation that they submitted an application to the FDA to measure body temperatures. And there was a leaked video months ago that showed the 8 Pro being used to check temperature by scanning the forehead.
I think they were betting on people continuing to check their temperature frequently and on getting FDA approval before launch, neither of which has panned out so far. I'm skeptical they'll ever get FDA approval but who knows.

@@taejaskudva2543 That "laser thermometer" that you are using does not measure temperature by the laser itself, it has an infrared sensor that does the temperature measurement. The laser light is used for pointing the device at an object. Look closely and you will see two sensors on a hand-held laser/infrared thermometer

I'm a midrange phone guy, so I don't think the 8 Pro provides $300 more value than the 8. But considering that you get a free Pixel Watch 2 with the 8 Pro (a $350 value) versus a free pair of Pixel Buds Pro (a $200 value) with the 8, it cuts the gap to $150, at which point I think the value is comparable. I decided to go with the 8 Pro, as I'm hoping the LTPO screen & bigger battery will help with the battery life, all while having the option of a more premium screen & more toys. If Night Sight Video is as good as advertised & the FDA approval for taking temperature of humans passes, I certainly believe the 8 Pro (+ Pixel Watch 2) warrants the +$300 price over the 8 (+ Pixel Buds Pro).
